Early Morning Thread 3/15/15: Cuppa. [krakatoa]

What's your favorite morning Joe?

I tried a bunch of cheap things like 8 o'clock varieties, Folgers, etc..., but none of it was really working for me. I mean, yeah, the caffeine was there, and that's the main point of it all, but the flavor was lacking.

Costco carries Magnum Jamaican Blue Mountain blend that really hits the spot for me. Rich with almost no associated bitterness. None of the burnt-ass flavor you pay extra for from Starbucks.

I understand pure Jamaican Blue is better, but that's a price point I can't rationalize when I'm so happy with this stuff.

What gets you guys revved up and on track for non-rack time?

People who did home service would have never thought of revealing things about their clients. 21 Sen. David Vitter gave a speech on the Senate floor calling on Congress to end the practice of birthright citizenship, arguing that "no sane country" would allow it for the children of illegal immigrants.


Vitter ended the remarks Thursday by saying he was actually quoting an old speech by Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who now opposes ending birthright citizenship. Reid had slammed Vitter over the issue the previous day.


As I posted yesterday(?), there are only two countries in the entire world who do this, the US and Canada. There actually is NOTHING in the constitution or case law that supports this insane policy.


But I guess Vitter's intention here was to demonstrate what raving hypocrites the Democrats are. He must know his chances of passing this law are zero.

43 Try getting an Aeropress (about $25 on Amazon). I use that with Costco "Roasted by Starbucks" coffee, which is pretty cheap (about $5-$6 a pound). I grind the coffee using a cheap ($50 at Bed Bath and Beyond) Cuisinart burr grinder and get great results. The combination of the burr grinder and Aeropress gets you very smooth coffee. Best I've ever had at home.

I like standard old Maxwell House. My wife got me some expensive stuff from Hawaii one year for Christmas. It was good but not so much better than the regular stuff to justify the cost. If I recall it was $25 per bag which wasn't even a full pound.

When I'm out of fresh ground coffee, I like Hills Brothers Medium Roast. I have a rather large canned supply; if civilization ends I'll still have coffee for years. Unfortunately, in recent months Hills changed their blend to use more of the cheaper arabica beans.

Gack! DD "coffee" is pure industrial waste, seasoned with just a hint of 90-weight gear oil. It is, in fact, worse than McDonald's coffee, which I thought would always be Number One.

Perhaps the only thing I miss about California (aside from the lack of snow) is Cafe La Llave, an inexpensive but ambrosial brew that was fairly easy to find in L.A.-area supermarkets. The best evah.

Maxwell House (what I drink now) is sorta generic, but far superior to DD.

Ha. Just yesterday morning, I sang some line from the musical, and Milady asked what that was from. I said, must be time to watch My Fair Lady again. For poor Julie Andrews's ripped-off singing.

My folks saw the play, I think. Growing up, I recall the odd LP album cover, by Hershfeld - I think that's the name - cartoonist who always worked his daughter Nina's name into his work. Didn't know what MFL was about until I saw the movie.

One of very few musicals I can tolerate. This, Fiddler, and, um... hm, that's about it.

89 Where I worked, the secretary that made the coffee would make it so damn weak there was no flavor. Another guy and I would be in earlier then her, and make it just a little bit stronger. She would complain about it being soooooo strong. I told her to just put a little bit of hot water in it to tame it. This was too hard for her to do I guess. But, she had no problem putting in 4 spoons of coffemate (crap) and 3 sugars into the weak cup swill she would make before she drank it.

The good thhing was, we three were the only ones that would keep the pot and area clean. Everyone else treated it like their mother worked there.

Dear friends, I have a confession to make I pray will not cost me my Moron Manhood card. Last fall, when I became seriously ill for several weeks - you don't wanna know - but in the course of that, I quit my nightly wine, and forewent coffee. For the next several months.

I eased back into coffee with a glass of hot, sweet milk and a dash of coffee. Finally, only just this week, I'm back to drinking too many cups of black, the way I like it.

I'm happy with the middling-brand Mexican or Columbian blends from the grocery store. Wife and daughter like to indulge in Whole Foods beans. Let's see what we've got here: Pacific Rim Vienna Roast. Whatever. Tastes like coffee. Good water and fresh grind are what I most care about.

I'm so old I remember when you could reliably get a cup of good coffee at any McDonald's.

funny you should say that. The coffee at DD or Starbucks is pretty uniform no matter where you get it, like it or not. But at MacD's ya never know what your going to get. Sometimes it is good, sometimes ok, and sometimes G-F awful. The people they employ there must be the bottom of the barrel.

As for coffee-we drink Jakob and Dallmayr. Dallmayr Ethiopian is the very, very best coffee I have ever had-the stuff that rats poop out nothwithstanding. But For everyday coffee, Jakob is somewhat affordable, and so, so good.

The website GermanDeli carries a large variety of German coffees, as well as other yummy German treats ( their holiday selection of candies is quite impressive, especially if you have been stationed in Germany/Eastern Europe and have developed a taste for good chocolate and local brats.) But we have found Jakob at Wegmans, here in NoVA. I highly, highly recommend it.

The best part of the coffee experience is that moment when you're grinding the beans. After that, it all goes downhill.

I know this may be sacrilege, but about 3 years ago I gave up the whole coffee thingi, and I don't regret it at all. I was always just a 2-cups-in-the-morning coffee guy, but I sleep better and feel better overall now that I'm not addicted to that bean. But I was pretty grumpy for a couple'o days weaning myself off the stuff.

197 Keurig's Green Mountain Dark Magic. I actually prefer Starbucks french roast in the K cups, it's a little intense for all the time but good to wake up with.

I used to use a Krups 12 cup drip maker, but i ended up drinking 12-14 cups a day and had a couple incidents losing my temper at work and panic attacks. i also used a one cup Bodum french press. Both of these make really good coffee, but the Krups quit after two years of daily use (the second to do this).

I looked at espresso machines, but the good ones are really expensive. The Keurig didn't cost as much as the Krups, but the cups are really expensive although not as expensive as buying a cup at work or a shop. I really like the lack of fing with the grinder and cleaning up with the Keurig. When i want a cup i can get one in a short time with no fing about.

it also has a cup you can load yourself so i can still use exotic coffees that i get from The Kaffeeklatsch ( www.kaffeeklatsch.com ), but that is too fiddly to use often.

205 Just an FYI on flavored coffees. They are usually an inferior bean or roast with flavoring added so you can't tell it's not a good coffee to begin with. You would be better off making regular coffee and adding in your own flavoring.

I don't care for the flavored coffees myself, after one sip they taste odd to me.

I only make one cup at a time, so the hand grinder is adequate. If I routinely made larger quantities I would get an electric grinder.

I'm a home-roaster too, and I can't go back to "ordinary" coffee anymore. Some Middle Eastern grocery stores stock green coffee beans, but you can also buy online at Sweet Maria's and other places. I like really strong coffee (lots of body) so I go for Sumatran beans, roasted until they're very shiny. But if you want a REAL kick, try Indian coffee beans, at a Viennese roast. You can't drink it straight, just toss in a few spoonfuls to blend with your regular coffee beans. Wham! That stuff will wake you up for sure. You actually have to let it rest for about 4 days after roasting, so it doesn't taste too overpowering. (Gotta get busy and order some more...)

246 As a freshman in high school, between second period and homeroom, I followed the cool kids out to the coffee wagon parked outside. (Half the price of Starbucks across the street.) Found out only last year that he served kids the ultra-decaf and automatically milk-and-sweetened every cup. We were buzzed by a placebo.

Today, a Wawa convenience store house blend. The store is at the three-quarter mark on my walk to school, so I'm hungry and cold for the first sip. Their ground bag coffee is good in my mini-Mr Coffee.

BTW, Nero Wolfe had a whole townhouse on West 35th Street, not an apartment. The whole top floor was dedicated to growing orchids. A huge restaurant-quality kitchen on the bottom floor. Multiple guest bedrooms where clients could hide from police. And an office that could call together a dozen suspects for the unmasking of the murderer.

Fresh cream, possibly only hours old. Fresh local cane sugar.

To a coffee drinker it simply is the ultimate.

248 When we livend in NYC, the wife bought me some "bullets" for my kuerig she found in the bargain bin at Christmas Tree Shop...spalled something like Jolt...had twice the caffeine. Also had a free supply of kuerig at the office, so that amounted to around 20 cups a day. When my heart started palpitating regularly I figured I should cut back.

Nowadays my tastes run to the dark roast variety. I like my Dunkin Donuts dark roast in my French press.

250 Allegro Costa Rican or Mocha Java, brewed in a home size Bunn when entertaining guests. Brewed in a large size Espro French press when it is just me and the wife.

Fresh groung in a Capresso grinder, but I'm maybe looking to upgrade.

The Espro is the best French press out there. Double walled stainless steel pot and a double filtration system. The coffe stays HOT for a good two hours and very warm for another hour or so. The best thing is that the coffe stays fresh tasting the whole time thanks to the filtration system. Best $100 I ever spent.

252 Good morning! 'Been very pleased with our Nespresso Vertuoline coffee maker. It can make both American coffees and espressos. (Plus the frother they sell is awesome -- based on a magnetic stirrer, not steam.)

The pods come in different strengths. There's even one that goes to 11 -- that's what sold me! ;-)

Also, the coffee forms "crema" (foam) when it's brewed, which I like a lot.

You can make your own pods, but I haven't tried that kit yet. Maybe I will. Each pod costs about a buck.


I could never find a Keurig pod that made me happy.

265 Years ago we had a coffee at the Knott's Berry Farm hotel restaurant. Best coffee ever. Very smooth an flavorful. Turned out it was Douwe Egberts, a dutch coffee. In restaurants, it is in liquid form and has its own brew system. Also sold in Europe in markets in brick form. About the same price there as your basic market coffees. We order through Amazon, about $5 a brick.

271 VERY, VERY late to the thread but I second the Ruta Maya dark roast from Costco. The sell it locally but not at all costco's, luckily you can get a 5 lb. bag online for ~$36 including shipping. I grind the beans and brew them in my Technivorm Mochamaster, ahhhhh.
