You know, she didn't commit the crime that no one is accusing her of committing.
Because ANY response in an official capacity to ANY other government official is--at some level--classified.

And (2) Only the President, AFAIK, has the authority on his say so to declassify material. Everyone else has to get approval to declassify anything!

The NYT routinely ignores "exclusives" when those exclusives harm Democrats. This story has better legs than a young Sigourney Weaver- if the NYT didn't want to knock Hillary down a peg or two, they wouldn't have run it.
But they have no reason- that we can see- to knock Hillary down a peg or two. So it seems more likely that someone they want to help more than Hillary wants this out there.

You know, I suspect Nixon got a raw deal. He was vilified by the press (dominated at the time by the NYT and WaPo) because he was instrumental in nailing Alger Hiss (whom they vociferously supported).
They crapped on him as a Red baiter because in his first campaign he'd called out Helen Gahagan Douglas as a Communist (or at least a Communist sympathizer) - which we now know she was.
The only whiffy thing about Nixon of which I'm aware is the Checkers speech, and I don't know what to make of that.
And he wasn't paranoid; the press really WAS out to get him, and eventually did. If the MSM devoted 1% of that effort to Choom Boy, he'd be in Leavenworth right now.

The closest I can get to Constitutional Authority for environmental issues is under the General Welfare clause- but that talks about spending, not regulation/lawmaking.
Ergo, the US Government could raise and spend money on environmental issues (if you squint real hard at the General Welfare clause)- but they would have to act through the States or the The People to do so.

As indicated above, I don't think creation of the EPA was a bad idea at the time, but even if it were, it pales in significance with Nixon's nailing Hiss (which he did single-handedly, when all hope was gone, according to Whitaker Chambers in his book), or opening the door to China, to name a few things. One of the companies was Google, can't remember the others. The point is that she likely had some standard back-up services set up, nothing secured.

The Cuyahoga River had liquid hydrocarbons floating on top of it that had been dumped into the river upstream. The fire(s) - there'd been more than one - weren't caused by methane, which is a gas that would escape to the atmosphere. You'd have to have an enormous amount of methane outgassing from a river to achieve the lower combustibility limit for methane.
Acid rain really WAS a problem, since burning high sulfur fuels generate a shitload of sulfur dioxide, which reacts with ozone in the upper atmosphere to make sulfur trioxide, the anhydride of sulfuric acid (i.e., it reacts with water to make sulfuric acid).
Re the ozone layer, credible scientists (some of whom I knew, and who were sensible, and not idealogues) were concerned about it (in the context of the SST) long before it became a cause celebre. I don't know where it stands now, or where the truth lies, but not building the SST, and changing to other refrigerants than chlorofluorocarbons (which decompose in the upper atmosphere to yield chlorine atoms that catalytically - not stoichiometrically - decompose two ozone molecules into three oxygen molecules) was a small price to pay to avoid the risk. (Compare the global warming shit, where the price is staggering, and the science dodgy.)
The DDT thing was probably bullshit; I don't know whether DDT really affects birds' eggs or not, but in any case DDT is invaluable in controlling malaria-bearing mosquitoes in the Third World, so fuck the birds.
Not all environmental issues are bogus. I think the Reds realized that they could hitch their wagon to environmental issues and ginned up bogus ones after seeing the potential for agitation raised by legitimate ones.

Our financial mess is because the federal government is spending $1.20 for every $1.00 it takes in taxes. Additionally all the federal and state regulations are choking innovation and enterprise.

If the Feds were doing their job re: illegal immigrants, that would be a moot point. The Feds *are* specifically given authority over immigration and naturalization.
And, IIRC, it's already supposed to be illegal knowingly to aid/harbor illegal aliens (see also: Constitutionally granted Federal Authority), which granting a Drivers License arguably is.
So, at the very least, there is a cogent argument from Constitutional Authority which says- yes, the Federal Government both should and should be able to forbid States from offering Drivers Licenses to illegals.

The government would not be able to deficit spend like they do if they didn't have the ability to spin up the ol' printing press.
Because our currency is fiat (as in, government says let there be currency and there is), government can manipulate the money supply in all kinds of ways. Stealth taxes through inflation being the biggest job killer of all.
I'm not a Ronulan gold-bug, but if we had something that constrained the amount of money that could be printed, and if congress set the value of dollar to ounce of gold (which I believe was at $30 or so to an ounce under FDR... check where gold is at now to see how much value the USD has lost since then), it would be damned hard for congress to continuously devalue our currency.

I agree that this decision was crummy, but what's interesting is that Nixon wasn't an economics guy. He wasn't a reader of the classics of conservative economics literature, as Reagan was. Nixon was obsessively focused on foreign policy to the detriment of many other things.
So on economics, he was reliant on staff and appointees.
Who basically walked in and said, "There's a terrible crisis, you have only one realistic option, if you don't take it your key foreign policy initiatives will be ruined, here are the documents to sign."

Why? Financial mismanagement by the feds. So these oil sheiks who had $100 billion in USD which they thought was worth x ounces of gold, suddenly found themselves with a shitload of paper that was no longer convertible to gold.
If we werent the reserve currency, the USD would have crashed then and there. But since we are the reserve currency (for now), this allowed government to print all the money they wanted.

Other than that, not really. If $34 USD were convertible to 1 ounce of gold, the number of ounces of gold in the vaults constrains how many USDs they could print.
Of course, what they would try to do is say "Hey everyone, now it takes $40 USD to convert to 1 ounce of gold" but that would very obviously make everyone poorer over night, and the people would probably not let congress do it.
The way the system operates now is that our currency loses 3-5% of its value (or whatever) every year, which is essentially a stealthy tax. And the federal reserve controls that stealth tax, not our federal government. And most people don't even realize it.
With a gold-based currency, I could put $10,000 under the mattress, and it would have roughly the same buying power 10 years later as it did when I put it there.
That is no longer the case. Your money loses value every second its sitting in your wallet.

An expanding economy requires an expanding supply of money. The gold standard pegs the exchange rate of currency to gold (it was $35/oz.), so to increase the supply of money you either have to mine more gold or change the exchange rate. Monkeying with the exchange rate defeats the purpose of having a gold standard, viz., that the fiat currency is backed by a fixed amount of gold.

I think recessions while we were on the gold standard were business-cycle driven, and not monetary policy-driven. So yes, usually short, although they could be brutal. They were also usually isolated to, say, the banking industry, or the farming industry (and all industries that derive from those), and were not economy-wide recessions, since your money was still worth the same. In other words, your income may shrink, but your savings was still there.
But we still have those kind of recessions, even being completely fiat currency and using Keynesian deficit spending. So I don't think that problem was solved.

I guess in theory, that could be a problem though if the population and economy grew and the money supply didnt.
but the answer would be to then peg an ounce of gold at, say $37 dollars instead of $34, which would have an immediate inflationary effect and flood the markets with money.
But I don't think that was ever a serious problem (running out of money in circulation).

That's exactly the problem. To illustrate with a thought experiment: Suppose you had five business associates (shopkeepers, tradesmen, etc.), and you had ten $10 bills between you, all backed by gold, and exchangeable at a fixed rate. No problem; the currency circulates between you, effectively serving as markers for who owes whom what.
Now expand the population to 50,000 people. You've still only got ten $10 bills, so clearly you need to expand the supply of money, or put up with a barter economy. But you can't expand the supply of money unless you mine more gold, or change the exchange rate of currency to gold. To do neither is grossly deflationary, and will collapse the economy, returning it to the level of the Middle Ages (trading a chicken for a pair of shoes type of thing, because there isn't enough currency).

Honestly, I'm not sure. Theoretically, I'd say yes, you'd just run in to the issue of a horse being worth $25 one day, but only $20 the next. But it would still (theoretically) be representing the same amount of wealth.
But in practice, I suppose the worry would be that USD's were being held by people and not circulated, and there would literally be a currency shortage and people would have to go back to trading livestock for goods or whatever.
Again, I don't think this was ever a realistic threat for the USD, but I can see how that COULD theoretically happen.

But we mined gold constantly in order to increase our gold supplies. And like I said above, I can see the theoretical problems with a gold-based currency. But we had one for the first 200 years of our country and did not run in to those problems. Rome had silver and gold based currencies for hundreds of years and did not run in to that problem. (they did however start mixing cheaper metals in to their coins so that the govt could "print" more money, which some would argue lead to the fall of the roman empire -- debasing the currency).
However, we have proof that when the government printing presses are not constrained by ANYTHING, the government just simply expands the money supply as much as they want, which makes all of US poorer. Which hardly seems like a better solution than a gold (or whatever)-backed currency.

I get what you're saying, I've heard all those objections before, and I agree that they're somewhat valid.
But I think our current fiat system has WAY more issues, including the fact that our money is, at the end of the day, only worth the paper its printed on.
While we're the world reserve currency, that's not a huge issue because everyone else is as fucked as us if our currency collapses. But at some point, we will no longer be the reserve currency (especially if foreigners keep getting fucked by our expansions of the money supply devaluing their USD reserves), in which case I don't see how we're not ROYALLY FUCKED overnight.

Rome's economy was comprised of many things, including an agrarian based power structure in may areas (cash poor but rich in lands and you didn't starve), slavery, tribute from foreign lands and occupied territories, barter, paying in salt and other commodities and debasement of currency.
Having said that, there is little or no control or hitting the presses like a monkey hitting the morphine button.

I also want to put this out there not because I am in any way trying to defend Clinton, but because I want to make sure we aren't making a fit out of something that is a non-story.
Here are some questions I'd like to see answered to know whether or not this is a story! Of course, we can't expect Clinton to answer these herself, but we should try to dig down to find the truth.
1. Was the Email Server hosted at the Clinton Home? The Email Server can be a completely different machine from the WWW Server - so even if the domain was parked in the British VI the Emails could have gone to NY. If I were setting up a server, I would consider doing it this way.
2. Was Hillary's Blackberry connected to a Classified Server? In the military, people with clearance essentially have two email accounts. One is regular email (joe.grunt@unit.marines.mil) and one is something called "SIPRNet." It is regulation that Classified Material only go out via SIPRNet - because it is a closed system on more secure servers that can't go to the Internet. This system is also used by Department of State.
If this is the case, perhaps Hillary had her Blackberry on SIPRNet. Also, there is not a snowball's chance in hell that anything on SIPRNet would be disclosed to the public, FOIAed, or probably even sent to Congress.
3. That being said, often times people do stupid stuff and send Classified Material through the regular email. This is indeed a reason why Hillary shouldn't have used her own server... but it doesn't mean that we should expect that she was receiving it much if at all.
So, here is what I think is a likely scenario. Hillary, being as crafty as she is, had SIPRNet to get Classified Materials and her own personal servers for non-Classified emails. If she gets something through Classified channels that needs to be addressed, she can always tell an underling to do it for her, so she doesn't have to create a paper trail. By keeping her regular email on private servers, she can have the power of access for situations like there, where something embarrassing needs to be deleted.
Were her tactics dishonest? Yes. Were they designed to specifically keep her out of the purview of oversight that are expected of our public officials? Hell yes. Will we find that she compromised National Security by engaging in this practice? Probably not.
Again - I hate the Clintons as much as the rest of you. I'm just trying to warn you that this might be yet another one of those scandals that Conservatives get all worked up about that doesn't really have the teeth to take her down. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think I will be.

a) unfair to savers and people who get the money 'down the line' when its already been devalued
b) allows government to print unlimited money to buy shit they need
c) is unsustainable when the issuers of said fiat currency are irresponsible with it and continuously expand the money supply to the point where they devalue EVERYONES currency.
Money should just be something used for trade. It should not be so manipulateable by the government.

Yeah, it does have a lot of issues, but that's because we elect scoundrels.
I also think the issues can't be avoided by returning to the gold standard because, given the limited amount of gold, the only way to increase the money supply would be to monkey with the exchange rate. In essence, that's back to a fiat currency, because now the value of the currency is arbitrarily determined by some bureaucrat. So we're back to square one.

The whole point of my post is to say that we can't think that this is going to bring her down - since Email is SPECIFICALLY FORBIDDEN for sending Classified Materials. Officials must use SIPRNet.
Now, there will be slip-ups. For instance, I tell my employer that I do not use company email to send and receive dirty jokes. Do people sometimes send me dirty jokes to my work account? Yes. So I delete these messages, hope my employer doesn't notice, and tell people to send them to my personal account.
Let's focus on what Hillary did wrong - she set up a private email server to get out of having any oversight. If she hired competent IT Consultants to maintain it for her, they used the exact same code and patches that the State Department would have used for their non-Classified Email Servers. Her email was likely not much less secure than the State Department.
The crime here is that she ducked oversight, not that she endangered National Security... (Well, via emails. She did a good job endangering National Security by her policies.)

I was an academic for many years, and the university administration used to increase the overhead rate on grants all the time (typically taking somewhere between half and three-quarters right off the top).
Whenever they raised the overhead rate, I'd squawk, and they'd say, "But we need to raise it because of inflation." But of course, the budgets on my grants already increased with inflation, so the absolute number of dollars they received also increased in proportion; the university administration had no justification for raising the RATE they charged. Except that they hired shitheads by the battalion to coordinate diversity (I hate uncoordinated diversity), and to send memos to other administrators about issues no one ever used to worry about.
That, in a nutshell, is exactly what has happened with the Federal government.
