Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Apple Unveils Apple WatchThey claim their cold-forged stainless steel makes the watch "60% more gayballz". Looking at the alleged "best apps for the Apple Watch" -- all of which are easily done on a phone -- I can't help thinking that the Apple Watch is a $600 solution in search of a problem (and that's the cost of the watch with the base (lame) watchband --the watchband you actually want will cost you up to $400 more). I thought this product was an unlikely gamble, but John Ekdahl pointed out, correctly, that given the new Fitness Monitor craze, there exists a potential pre-existing audience for a watch that can do a bunch of things. While the Apple Watch canceled a bunch of planned fitness-monitor technologies, they apparently kept the heart-rate monitor, allowing the Watch to compete, in theory, with Jawbone, Fitbit, Garmin, and so forth. But I don't know. I have a heart-rate monitor and I find it to be a not very useful thing. I don't know what to do with it. It's largely trivia, rather than useable information. So I don't know about spending $600-1000 for the midrange Apple Watch. The lower cost "sport" version, made of aluminum, will cost $350 for the smaller (woman's) version and $400 for the larger (man's) version. The midrange version, in stainless steel, will cost $550 for the woman's version, and $600 for the men's. And then add on several hundred dollars for a decent band. The top-of-the-line gold version, I don't even want to get into. One thing I think was potentially attractive about the Apple Watch was price. The Apple Watch would be a stylish little gizmo, as most Apple products are. That means it could, say, compete in the Stylish Wrist Jewelry market with, say, Tag Heuer. But I assumed, stupidly, it would be cheaper than a Tag Heuer. If it's pretty much the same price as a Tag Heuer, why not just buy the Tag Heuer? Eh, I thought this would flop, and then John Ekdahl was all like "no, it will be soooo awesome," but never listen to John Ekdahl. He's an idiot.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
I'd rather spend $3000 on a watch from Breitling instead.

A Tag Heuer, or any good watch other than a throw-away digital, will be useful for many, many years, and potentially for many lifetimes. Smart watches will be obsolete within a year and likely non-functional in two years. Yet they cost the same as a good watch, or more. That alone is a reason to think twice.

Ace, the heart rate monitor is very useful for tracking your cardiac fitness.
It is also very useful for when working out. Example: You feel tired and drained on the first mile of a three mile run; checking your pulse shows that you haven't reached any threshold and can continue to exercise safely. It also tells you when to slow down. I have been using a Garmin 305 for years. Coupled with the free software, (besides shoes) it is my most important piece of equipment. Ace @ 41
Heart Rate matters a lot, and many beginners dont know where they should be, thus over exerting themselves and not burning much fat. A good rule of thumb is - if your heart rate/ breathing is increased enough during exercise that you can't carry on a conversation without panting every few words, you're past the "fat-burning" stage and into the cardio stage of your Target Heart Rate. Slow your roll. Ideally, 55 - 65 percent of your max HR for fat-burning. A high quality (and accurate) HR monitor requires a cheststrap, which sends a signal to a watch-like receiver. Polar makes them starting at about $50. Posted by: shredded chi at March 09, 2015 04:24 PM (fitjX) 252

It has buttons that make it light up, become a timer or a stop watch, and it is a big ol' man's watch. People see it and ask me why I am wearing a big ol' man's watch. I say because I like big watches, it has everything I want in a watch, and it is a conversation starter. I do not require, nor do I desire, a watch that costs more than my monthly mortgage payment.

Both Apple and Google are trying to pioneer "wearable computing" devices. I can see some useful features for the watch, and ten years from now a watch like that might be a reasonable thing to buy.
But anyone who gets one now is an early adopter, paying a lot for a device with a few niche uses. The main use case for a smart watch is to let you do things without getting out your phone. Like, see who is calling you and decline to take the call without even getting the phone out. However, I have solved the problem of keeping the phone where I can get it out quickly. I'm not willing to jump through hoops to avoid reaching down to my phone pocket and pulling out the phone. One other point. Apple completely changed the game when they introduced the iPhone; they reaped huge rewards when they did so. They completely changed the game again when they introduced the iPad. But since then, they haven't found any game-changers; they have just incrementally improved things. Apple wants another game-changer. Well, this watch ain't it. Not only is it not important enough to be a game-changer, the Android equivalents are just as good and were already out before this released. You can even get an "eInk" Android watch with much better battery life. There's no option for that with the Apple watch. I have to say, three days of battery life sounds more useful to me than 18 hours of battery life. Posted by: mr_jack at March 09, 2015 04:39 PM (M59SC) 320

I'm forced to use an iPhone (4s, to boot) because that's what my company requires. The execs in my company (engineering software) all parade around with their iPads surgically attached to their hands (though it should be said that almost none of my company's software works on Mac - go figure).
I generally find Apple's stuff to be pretty good but I cannot for the life of me see from where comes this disgusting levels of rump-swabbery for all things Apple unless it's part of the whole hipster-cult sort of thing. I loathe Windoze and generally use Ubuntu whenever I can (I'm cheap) and the only think I loathe more than Windoze is the Google Data-Mining Matrix known as Android. Being able to sell the asset for cash does not make it an investment. There has to be a return. The items are certainly assets, and they can be investments. It was new technology and could replace a portion of the market by taking over a lot of what netbooks and laptops were handling. The iWatch isn't new. They are playing catchup with it. So maybe they'll get a portion of their phone user base to buy into it but how large is that portion of their user base that wants it? You could probably get an estimate by looking at those with droid phones that have bought the android watch peripherals and then possibly bump it up a few more points because of fanboys. And with all that I would still be shocked as hell if it were anywhere near 20% of their market share. Posted by: Buzzion at March 09, 2015 05:11 PM (3T4Jm) 387
