Ain't my usual thing, and I really don't mean to buzzkill, but can I ask for prayers? I found out yesterday that my BIL has been given that ugly diagnosis. Apparently, a tumor on pelvic bone. He is now @ MCV in wonderful hands, and treatment has already started. Biopsy results tomorrow with a bone marrow scan (?) or biopsy (?) in the morning. They found it quite early, so I'm praying for the best. Please do the same if you are the praying sort. Honest question, what are SNL's ratings nowadays?
I still see links on our side of the internet to it. I think we view it as being more important than it is now because of how big a deal it was when we grew up. In 2015, getting worked up over an SNL skit, good or bad for our side, is like getting worked up over some new article in Time. Maybe we should just stop paying attention to it. Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at March 08, 2015 09:52 PM (XtI7T) Bebe's! As always it was expertly planned by CBD. It was a fine location with a beautiful view of the river and more importantly, new york; so you new there was hope for a better future. It had very reasonably priced alcohol and importantly it was in hoboken so easy access to hobos. It was relatively quiet through 10 pm or so then we learned where the jersey shore crowd winters. Interestingly there was a relatively high proportion of lurkers. Fine fellows as they were, except for the plant, I am confused by lurkers that show up at a party. You refuse to comment anonymously but you show up in person? Anyway, as no one would be surprised everyone was a lot of fun and I got to associate some faces with names. Surprisingly, for me, I liked everyone I met more after having met them in person than before. After CBD got all responsible and bailed a hardened core of morons, kind of the pit of the party, wandered around looking for a quieter location with a crowd old enough to wear coats; instead of going coatless to show off the guns. As far as I know all the claims of bloodletting and debauchery which are assumed at these things are urban myths. Posted by: yankeefifth at March 08, 2015 10:02 PM (gsfK5) 210

Proof positive that Hillary is a nitwit: apparently she didn't send any emails from a State Department email address.
Now if she had any brains, she'd have sent most of her emails from a State Department address, and only relegated the "hot" ones to her dark address. And if she were really clever, she'd have sent self-serving emails from the State Department address, and then waited for the (inevitable) FOIA request to make herself look good without her pawprints on the whole affair. But no. The brightest woman ever (which, if true, would be a devastating argument against the 19th Amendment) sends every goddamned email from her dark server, and not a one from a legitimate address. The absence of any emails from a legitimate address fairly screams gross malfeasance. Posted by: Jay Guevara at March 08, 2015 10:03 PM (oKE6c) 216

Has anyone here ever seen either of the Werner Herzog 1970s films "Aguirre the Wrath of God" or "Fitzcarraldo"?? If so, could you spare a quick review? Have read great things about them for years, and they're finally now available on blu-ray.
Posted by: qdpsteve at March 08, 2015 10:02 PM Oh, jeez... Dunno about the other one, but, I have seen Fitzcarraldo... decades ago. I recall that it was pretty good, but, not as good as it's reputation. Good flick, but a little over rated. That doesn't mean it's not worth checking out or even owning. Posted by: qdpsteve at March 08, 2015 10:09 PM Yeah, there are some parallels. I remember when it was being made. Troubled production is an understatement. I recall that Mick Jagger was cast in it and started shooting... there were on location photos of him in the jungle with a bow and arrow. Weird. Now that I think about the flick, it's been so long since I've seen it, I might've been unfair. What I would have called just a good flick back then, would be a fucking masterpiece by today's standards. I'll have to watch it again. Apocalypse Now? You know, that was tv the other night and I watched it again. What surprised me was that it was an alternate edit that I haven't seen since it was released. It was the version with the "air strike" on Kurtz's compound during the end credits. Has that been re released or something? It also had some edits during the sampan scene and when cheif cops the spear. Posted by: otho at March 08, 2015 10:18 PM (tBSrv) 278

otho, other than the "Redux" edition of 2001, not sure of any other tinkering Coppola's done with Apocalypse Now. Let's hope he's not coming down with a case of George Lucas syndrome.
Posted by: qdpsteve at March 08, 2015 10:21 PM "Redux" is kinda meh. The extra stuff is fascinating, but doesn't help the pace or the story. I prefer the original. Yeah, I seem to recall that the "air strike" version was changed early on to the plain credits and only lived on with oddball distribution versions. I'd buy it if I could get it, because that ending is fantastic. Weird surreal and fitting. Posted by: otho at March 08, 2015 10:31 PM (tBSrv) 316

If you treat IRS rules the way the IRS treats IRS rules, you go to prison; if you treat federal law the way the secretary of state does, you go to prison. If you treat immigration controls the way our immigration authorities do, you go to prison. If you're as careless in your handling of firearms as the ATF is, you go to prison. I don't really recall the NoVaMoMee all that well but there were about 40 there. I've attended both and met some great people (RWC, Jinx, Hothgar, the lovely Vendette, Lady S &c &c). There was someone there that claimed to work on data analytics for some political shop in town and I ended the conversation with "great fucking job you did in 2012"-not my finest moment to a member of the horde. Politics is now all about spamming twitter memes at our Facebook friends.
Thankfully, soon we'll have AI to spam our social networks with twitter memes for us. Yay! Rather than argue with progtards and get angry. Just program a bot to argue for you. Tweak settings for levels of cursing, trolling, and kindness - then go back to binge-watching Breaking Bad. Robo-news Advances! http://hotair.com/headlines/archives/2015/03/08/if-an-algorithm-wrote-this-how-would-you-even-know/ The mantra around all of this carries the usual liberation theme: Robo-journalism will free humans to do more reporting and less data processing. That would be nice, but Kristian Hammond, Narrative Science's co-founder, estimates that 90 percent of news could be algorithmically generated by the mid-2020s, much of it without human intervention. Now granted a lot of what I watched was when it was on Comedy Central and E! and they had trimmed the fat down to one hour shows. But now its not funny. You can even tell in the audience response. There are some laughs but they're like short bursts, and its almost more "clapter" humor. I watched the Celebrity Jeopardy from the 40th Anniversary. And some was funny but it was taken too far/too long. Having Norm MacDonald showing up as Burt Reynolds was good, but needing the call back to the "Turd Ferguson" joke was unnecessary. Then repeating that joke of having another celebrity show up this time with Jim Carrey doing Matthew McConaughey. Its like they can't help beating the joke to death. "I'm finding it interesting that no on has mentioned G. W. Bush was there at Selma."
Oh, he and Laura were there, sure enough. GWB was rewarded for his having pushed through Congress, and personally signed, the 2006 reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act. Rewarded by his being rudely snubbed, having people refuse to march with him on the Selma bridge, and being cropped out of the majority of the photos on the wire services. SMFH....heya, lass! Yeah, I think it was Irongrampa.... got outshot by his granddaughter?
Doesn't surprise me any. I teach a lot of women to shoot, and most of 'em end up outshooting 80%+ of the guys at the range. I'd say the ladies become solid "8" ring shooters, within their first fifty rounds. That's because they don't come pre-wired with delusions of adequacy in the firearms department. So, the instruction sticks, and they tend to *do* the instructions, by the letter, step by step. In so doing, they get the requisite success built into the process. The guys? Yeah, about 30% just flat won't look at the front sight, much less a complete sight picture. And they guys are harder to teach good, smooth trigger control. HOW. EVER. Simply due to interest levels, a larger percentage of guys will stick with the program, and persevere into becoming decent to very good shooters. At that point, it the difference between the women and men boils down to "Who Practices the Most, and Correctly". That, until the skill levels bump up against the constraints of human physiology. Then, as with most sports, the very top ultra-elite echelons are held almost universally, by the men. But for those of us down in the Great Fat Middle? I'll welcome a good female shooter on my IDPA or Three Gun squad, any day, any time. Women make good shooters. Pissed off and scared women are likely some of the deadliest shooters to be found. Much. Respect. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at March 09, 2015 12:30 AM (RzZOc) 532

They want to conserve the bathwater and throw out the baby. They'll fight to the death on hot-button issues of no immediate consequences, and surrender readily on all the important things. I forget who it was, but one of those political writers of old once said that it was the fate of the Conservative to be dragged kicking and screaming into a future they don't want. If that's what they want to be, let them have the label, and let's do the dragging. What are we? Who are we? Libertarian-Conservatives? That manages to bracket the target without actually hitting it, but there's an older label for us, that was stolen and abused for decades. Classical Liberals founded this country. Now that the name Liberal hasn't been used in political contexts for a while and the cretins have gone back to Progressive, and I think it's time for us to steal it back and bring it to its original meaning. Sounds good. One problem though. Even though it is a pure fantasy setting the "Freedom" Party has already been used. Harry Turtledove did a whole slew of alternate history novels. In on series the Freedom Party was his version of the nazi party except it was in the Confederacy after his version of WW I. Hi horde:
I can't sleep and I want to post about some things that I've been through lately. I was ill for a month, couldn't figure out what was wrong. When the docs did diagnose, I was septic, near death and taken to surgery. After 2 days on a ventilator (horrible) and horrendous pain, my wound was closed enough for recovery. I am home and have IV's and nurses twice a day until a wound vac can be applied. Incredible all the technology that saved me. I want to share a beautiful story. In my twilight of delirium, sedation and pain, I would hear that people are praying for me. I am a Roman Catholic and my parish priest came but I don't recall. The Chaplin came and a visiting priest from India. He heard I went to Calcutta in 1979 and met Mother Theresa and the orphanage. He emailed India and had 50 orphanage children pray for me. I was unaware of all of this. I shouldn't be alive but I am. I believe in the power of prayer and I believe in fighting for life. I hope for 25+ more years and maybe I'll get it. I also thought I should share "witness" since this was such a powerful event. I know it's 3 AM and not many will read this and that's okay. I just needed to reach out and thank anyone who helped with those prayers. When we ask each other and pray we provide a powerful intercession. I am blessed to be a part of this blog and I will be at the next Wisconsin meet up. So sorry I have to miss the upcoming one. Posted by: bossy barbara at March 09, 2015 03:03 AM (F2IAQ) 601

The fiancee was under-the-weather today, and requested that I cook something special for her teppanyaki style. Benihana restaurants popularized this style some decades ago (I used to eat at the original Benihana in Encino), but I've seen it from Hawaii to North Carolina.
Thing is.....it's dirt easy, and nearly impossible to screw-up. Vegetables -- white onion and zucchini. Slice the onions into strips about 1.5" long by 3/8" wide [cut across onion in 3/8" layers, cut outer rings about 1.5" (5 times) cut outer-middle rings about 1.5" (4 times), cut middle rings about 1.5" (3 times), cut inner rings about 1.5" (2 times). Cut flower and stem-end off zucchini, then cut about 1.5" long. Divide each section into 9, 12, or 16 rectangular slices, depending on thickness. Using soy oil, cook veggies. When mostly cooked, toss in some black pepper, add dab of butter, splash of soy sauce, and "floof" of sesame seeds. Toss until everything sticks. Serve with sauce of soy sauce, rice vinegar, whipped onion (now you know where those central bits that didn't have 1.5" segments went, don't you?) and whipped ginger (which, if you don't want to peel it, can be bought in a tube). I actually have a mini-food processor that works for this, otherwise you could use a blender. The meats are very similar -- cut very small, fried in soy oil.....but here's a subtle difference.....add in garlic butter. What, you have no garlic butter? Then add the butter, sprinkle with powdered garlic, do a quick preliminary toss.....then add the soy sauce, pepper, and sesame seeds and toss until coated. The dipping sauce for this is supposed to be Chinese mustard, soy sauce, cream, and sesame seeds.....do yourself a favor and just go with: SB Oriental hot mustard powder (from a can) and soy sauce. Mix to a thin paste. Again, this is dirt easy, comes out like an expensive restaurant, is nearly impossible to mess up too badly, and tastes great. Posted by: SMFH at it all at March 09, 2015 05:03 AM (OsWis) I think he's a super-lucky guy.....but sleep-deprivation really puts a skew on someone's outlook. When I turned 40, a dozen years ago, I resolved that I was going to change my healthcare for the better. I chose a primary-care doc that knew his ass from 3rd base, and he sent me off to a sleep specialist, where I was diagnosed with OSA. I stopped breathing several times an hour for more than 20 seconds, and my my blood oxygen level regularly dipped to levels that could be charged as "attempted murder" if caused by someone else. Not to mention the dain bramage. Not to mention the dain bramage. But it's left me with a certain fragility regarding sleep, that creates a variety of alerts when spanning time zones.....or experiencing Daylight Wasting Time. I can normally settle in, but it makes me nervous. Posted by: cthulhu at March 09, 2015 05:23 AM (T1005) 627
Re: Ginger.
I love fresh ginger. I make stri-frys and I always start with garlic/ginger/hot chili flakes. I also have a go-to 'flavor' for stir-frys which consists of juice and zest of one orange, garlic-chili sauce, low-sodium soy (Kikkoman!), sesame oil, maybe some teriyaki or oyster sauce and the key ingredient: A good thick hoi-sin sauce; the megamart brands are usually too thin and watery so best to go to a Chinese grocery and ask for help in locating it. Now I don't know about 'whipped' ginger or 'tube' ginger, but fresh ginger is incredibly easy to use. The first thing one needs is one of those microplane zesters/graters. This is a must 'gadget' in the kitchen for me now; it also works on grating parmegianno reggiano and other hard cheeses, plus zesting citrus and grating ginger. They are a snap to clean as well, unlike those box graters which are a royal pain to clean. Now to peel ginger the easy peasy way: Using a typical metal teaspoon, place your thumb on the bottom/rounded side of the spoon. Use it like a Roman strigil and scrape the ginger peel off. It works like a charm with little to no waste as with the spoon you can get into the hooks and crannies quite easily nor is there any waste as one gets from cutting the ginger peel off (and into a flat sided rectangle) and one never gets cut with the spoon. Once peeled, trim each end and do with it what you will. I mince it for stir-frys; I grate it for carrot-ginger soup; I slice it in big pieces for when I add it to sliced carrots with fresh ground toasted coriander and cumin seeds and beef broth (with the ginger pieces to be removed later). Oh, and another must have in the kitchen is two coffee grinders. One is obviously for fresh coffee beans but the other is used for grinding whole spice seeds like coriander, cumin, mustard, allspice, mace and the like. I used to laugh at cooking shows and toasting/grinding one's seeds, but that second coffee grinder has been a huge boon to my cooking. It helps in making great curry powders and the like. I highly recommend a second coffee grinder. If you don't have one coffee grinder, ugh!, you either use preground coffee in a can or instant, neither of which gives me the happies in the morning. Fresh ginger is the way to go. So are coffee beans; besides, they last longer (stored in fridge or freezer) and the fresher the grind the better the cup as the essential oils are retained until the last minute.
