Obama is at Selma playing the race card again.
President Obama led the ceremony Saturday marking the 50th anniversary of the Selma, Ala. Bloody Sunday march, hailing the men and women who fought for civil rights in the 1960s, but declared that more work needs to be done for race relations in the United States. Every criticism of TFG here on race (or other issues) is well founded, but ..... for me, I can't get past what all his/his ilk's behavior says about the country itself. If these people were not getting away with it, that would be one thing. But they do.

Something as huge and amorphous as "race relations" is hard for me to assess.
I don't sense that the everyday relations between individuals in real life, where racism was never as bad as claimed and has mostly ebbed away, is any worse than before the vandalism of the civic culture we have been witnessing. But the institutional racism of course has reached jaw-dropping levels. Race-baiting and vandalism from the "law enforcement" authorities (DOJ) and political leaders. Continued de facto affirmative action in admissions. Ludicrous social engineering nonsense (discipline standards changes for black high schoolers), and of course application of the insane and idiotic "disparate impact" nonsense. All you folks who can listen to or even read what TFG barfed up at Selma are better than I. The very concept of that alien, arrogant, empty-suited affirmative action twink speaking on any solemn occasion is nauseating.
The idiot who could mouth "typical white woman" in an "historic" speech on race - and not be immediately relegated to the Lyndon Larouche/David Duke fringe of politics. (of course the pinch-yourself "stop the rising waters/heal the planet" idiocy when he clinched the nomination really could serve as a single data point illustrating the degradation of the US and its descent into completely unserious territory) My idiot sister and her husband (not idiots in general, which is the point - but utterly clueless, sheltered little mushrooms trapped in the cave consisting of pop culture and the media) were going on an on about the movie Selma last time they were here. I barely managed a half-assed "oh, OK, sounds interesting". It got worse. Racism in this country has been dead and gone for 20 years at least.
This is, by far, the least racist country in the world. Try being a white person in China (kai-dai, or white devil), or a hispanic in Japan. Or a Korean in Japan, for that matter. Then you would see racism, straight up. Black folks have been handed everything on a platter for years. The fact that they think that's not enough is proof positive that if you give somebody something for free, they will assume it is exactly worth that price. So, F that guy in particular, and the rest of the race hustlers. I want my stuff back, dammit. Posted by: tcn in AK at March 07, 2015 05:50 PM (+YMhA) 98

"It takes a lot of assholes agitating to whip up a minor local crime story into national outrage." It's a reoccurring theme with them, because it's within their sphere of comfort (AlinskyRule #2) and pretty much all they know. Obama will continue to dictate with EOs and continue to focus on local issues to lambast America. When he is not hiding from the world or doing fund raising in a controlled environments, he'll be doing mostly "community organizing schtick"up until the 11th hour. Then he will try and ram through all the extreme lefts wildest wet dreams the day before he is escorted out of the WH. Posted by: Buckeye Abroad at March 07, 2015 05:52 PM (mZmhh) 102

Black folks have been handed everything on a platter for years. The fact that they think that's not enough is proof positive that if you give somebody something for free, they will assume it is exactly worth that price. So, F that guy in particular, and the rest of the race hustlers. I want my stuff back, dammit. Posted by: tcn in AK at March 07, 2015 05:50 PM (+YMhA) This. 99,
I grew up in Hawaii as a kid in the 80s. I was a Navy brat whose dad retired in 1983, and I was lucky enough to move to Nanakuli, Hawaii. This place was on the leeward side of O'ahu, and mostly Samoan/Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander. Ninth grade, I was being chased around a jr/high school in donut buildings by two Samoan chicks that outweighed me by about 150-200 lbs (yes, the buildings looked like UFOS in the shape of donuts). I learned what 'popolo', 'haole', etc meant. Not nice words. Fortunately for me, my dad taught us girls to fight dirty, even in the midst of getting our asses handed to us. Yet years later, just a few miles down the road in Waianae, my hubby at the time had a 1SG who was Samoan whose family pretty much adopted us. What I do find interesting, however, is that I was called the 'N' word in Hawaii, yet never, ever anywhere in the South. Go figure. Posted by: SMFH at it all at March 07, 2015 06:22 PM (OsWis) 130

So John Legend performed at the Houston Rodeo last night. Last song was the theme song from them film Selma. Fine. Also treats the crowd to a very long soliloquy about race relations, civil rights, the meaning of Selma, and the "fact" that people of color are still be deprived of their right to vote
WTF. Who. Who is being deprived of their right to vote. Who. Of course it is not polite to challange this or disagree in any way. What citizen is being deprived of their right to vote? And of course, the young people in the crowd are shouting their agreement. So they have been taught and believe that this country is like Selma in the 60s. Really? And they so desperately want it to be true. They so want to be heroes and dedicate them selves to something, anything, bigger than themselves. And all traditional means of finding that satisfaction of being part of something important have been mocked out of existence. So all these young people, desparate to belong, to do something important, have to perpetuate the lie that the country is just like Selma of to 60s. Because otherwise their lives have no meaning Posted by: ThunderB, PinUpWhoreBabyMachine at March 07, 2015 06:23 PM (zOTsN) 133

Hell even the Boy Scouts are evil because they don't want gay scout masters. So many larger institutions they could devote that youthful energy to have been devalued in pop culture. That's why the grievance culture is so appealing. There isn't much else left

True, but given the original F/A-18s (and I'm not sure how many of them are still flying, with the newer construction variants like the E, F, G models) were introduced in '83 versus the BUFF in '55, with the last H model being built in '63. IOW, the Hornet/Super Hornet fleet is still relatively young, with the E/Fs being introduced in '99. Posted by: WOLVERINES! at March 07, 2015 06:57 PM (nL0sw) 185

NGU/others, I've recounted here how a USMC F-18 driver told me at a shooting event how down his sort was on the F-35. Nobody was fighting to get into the program for it, all of them love the F-18, esp. with upgrades like the conformal ordnance-carrying add-on recently introduced. He noted that in their periodic intel briefings on threats/operational scenarios, they had yet to hear of one where the F-35 would be required. I believe he said all/most ofthe current USMC F-18 force is "trapped out", meaning no more carrier landings. Prior to this they had been doing regular rotations on carrier deployments.
Anna Puma can probably fill in the details, but they're re-"barreling" F-18As, I believe, to get more life out of those airframes. The Aussies' F-18s are in pristine condition, and get less use (and no carrier landings). The Canadians face quite a dilemma. The F-18 is all they need, but the CF-18s are old. The F-35, to perform the Canadian mission, requires drop tanks or expanded fuel capacity - either of which negates the stealthiness. The F-35 is a wonderful platform for Kuwait, Singapore, Switzerland, or Israel - small countries with limited missions and small forces and no real $$$ constraint. Otherwise it represents several familiar but potentially hazardous procurement pathologies, all woven together, and finally allowed to put a lot at risk due to "all eggs in one basket". Sock Curtis LeMay, even more to the point, there is negative quality in scarcity. The F-35 might, on paper or in certain pristine scenarios, be "all that". Doesn't mean a damn thing for a (crumbling, unserious, stumbling) super-power with global commitments.
Maintenance down-time, training don't cease being factors, no matter how whiz-bang the platform. You can only be in one place at a time, with the aircraft ready to fly, with crews with enough flight hours and training. Straits of Taiwan and Straits of Hormuz aren't really one AO, as it turns out. But there I go referring to concepts, places, things that belong to our past, when we were a serious country - the most serious, in a good sense, that ever existed. I watched Reagan's speech for the umpteenth time earlier after reading Weirddave's wonderfully written essay on how weakness is provocative.
I was fortunate enough to have been born in a family that once upon a time, emphasized character over color. When I went to HS in the 80s, I loved listening to Reagan's speeches, and he was like the grandfather I never had. Hell, my parent's voted for him in 1984. In Hawaii. 31 years. My parents have lost their minds in 31 years. Mom has a shrine to Obama. Voted for him both times. Dad refuses to tell me who he voted for. I have an idea though. Obama in 2008, didn't vote in 2012. They haven't unfriended me on Facebook, so obviously, I'm not annoying them enough. But, they just celebrated their 49th anniversary, so there's that. http://www.elcubanocigars.com All handmade, in Texas City, TX. All of their rollers are from Cuba, and the owners are Cuban, 5th gen cigar industry, but have been in the States since '62. It's all Cuban Seed leaf, from all of the tobacco growing countries in the Central America and Caribbean Basin. I've enjoyed fine cigars since the late '80s, and have had some of the world's best, in my travels to Australia, Central America, Canada, the UK and most of the USA. The Cuban Crafters cigars simply outclass about anything out there, and only a couple genuine Cuban cigars are as good, or better. For those of you who enjoy the finer things, such as a premium cigar, I do suggest that you get on their site, or give 'em a call Monday, and order up a sampler. Delicious, all of them. I'd mention my favorite, but I don't want to have y'all buy me out of what I look forward to smoking during the lunch hour. Enjoy! I quit cigarettes 33 years ago. Probably smoked a box of cigars since then, some cheap, some expensive. Last one was a pink-band King Edward given to me by niece/nephew on birth of their first daughter 5 years ago. I finally smoked it (and got drunk) the day our main cat Mikel died. Had not used nicotine in 8 years. Quit copenhagen in 2005 when doc told me I had cancer. It was Stoli that got me drunk on dead hero cat day, though. My problem with nicotine is I like it. Have for the past 55 years. Almost as long as I have loved adult beverages.

Evening, 'rons. I have a prayer request. Last week, my grandmother had a stroke. She was doing well and they moved her to a rehab facility on Monday. Most of her issues are with her left side and she can't walk without support at the moment. Anyway, they had to readmit her to the hospital last night for bleeding. They think it is because of the larger dose of Coumadin she has been on the past week, but they aren't sure yet. So, prayers please, both that it isn't anything serious and also for a full recovery from her stroke.

Rickl. Expect to pay an average of only $6.50 per stick. Larger sizes can run to $7.50, with some exotics a bit higher, but.....those are exotics.
There are two kinds of "strength" in cigars, and people frequently conflate the two. Flavor: Contrary to appearances, the darker colored cigars (Maduro & Obscuro), tend to be the milder flavors. Deep, rich and smooth flavors. The lighter wrappers (Connecticut Shade, Habana 2000, etc.) tend to have more "bite", be a bit more peppery and tart. Now, the other "strength" factor. "Kick". The effects of nicotine in the tobacco. For example, the El Cubano Blue Label, in the Shade (light tan) wrapper.....mild taste, smooth, would seem to be a good "morning" cigar? Notsofast, Guido. It's got a huge nicotine kick. If you haven't snarfed a hearty lunch before that cigar, you're going to feel rather dizzy, queasy and likely exhibit some rather interesting shades of green in the area of your gills. Conversely, the White Label Maduro? Flavor bomb...intense, rich, smooth, just a bit of pepper-y note on the palate. A great breakfast cigar, it's lighter nicotine level is much more user-friendly than the aforementioned Blue Label. Call 'em on the phone to order, and ask for Fred (Manolo).... he can guide you through the inventory. Tell him Jim from Galveston sent'cha. Enjoy!
