Overnight Open Thread (7 Mar 2015)

Don't forget to move your clocks up an hour tonight for daylight saving time again.

"Green" Products

Yeah, about those so-called "green" products. Hidden hazards found in 'green' products.

Warbirds Of America

Cell Phone Privacy

How to get some privacy with your cell phone. Pretty easy and basic.

High School Prom

Teen asks Vegas show girl to come to his prom. She says yes. School says no (it is a Catholic school). Aw c'mon. That's awesome.

Gitmo

Released Gitmo prisoners mostly return to their evil ways. Another Democrat success story. It's only a matter of time before the Bergdahl 5 rejoin terror activities.

Out of 647 detainees who were released, 116 - or 18 percent - have been confirmed as "re-engaging" in terrorism, according to the report by the Director of National Intelligence.
Of those, 25 are dead and 23 are back behind bars.
Another 11 percent of those released are "suspected" of re-engaging in their jihadi ways, according to the annual summary that is required by Congress.

Dragon Force Cover

Real Unemployment

Recovery my ass. Here's what unemployment rate looks like if you add back labor dropouts.

Selma

Bush Derangement Syndrome. Civil rights leader refused to cross bridge with Bush in Selma. Her reason?

Diane Nash reportedly told Martin she refused to march with Bush because, 'the Movement was about peace and non-violence and Bush is a man of war.'

I guess she does not know about Obama and his droning (the UAV type not his speeches). And Libya. And the air campaign in Syria and Iraq.

RE the casino. I was gaming out the scenario with a friend and we came to the conclusion that he should say no. Not that I thought it was a bad idea, but the timing sucks politically, and you can always say yes later*, and the rule of never taking a first offer in a negotiation.

Then, Hard Rock came back with 200mil in sweeteners for the NBA mansion, and I thought, this is vindication for saying no the first time, he'll look like a negotiating genius if he says yes now.
But he didn't and now I'm a little confused, other than Iowa political considerations.

*Say no to building or bonding for anything, and those in favor won't relent. Say yes once and you're on the hook. Kinda like sex.

It was pretty disappointing and I'm pretty easy-going with my escapist viewing, limited as it is. The entire Danny Pink thing just felt forced and it lasted the entire damn season. 102 There somewhere is a great story about why ID stays off DST. The diary farmers milk their cows every morning at same time and the rail road picked up the old 10 Gal cans. Changing the time messed up the railroad schedule so that was the reason for the push back.

My grandfather had a dairy farm, and I helped him carry those darn cans to the road to be picked up.

And Moffat seems to love messing with his audience's heads. When he reverses the credits following Clara's big opening revelation, that was just a lovely touch.

134 In the northern latitudes, in the winter months, people go to work in the dark (those who work), and return home in the dark. No daylight is saved.

In the summer months, after the clocks are adjusted forward, people go to work in the dark, and after work it stays daylight until midnight. People don't get any sleep and are tired and cranky all summer. No daylight is saved during the summer months either. In fact, everyone consumes as much daylight as possible, to the point of exhaustion, and daylight is wasted.

Of course, in the winter months, everyone is drunk and cranky.

Nah. It's the same situation with me. What I think it is, is that as a child, you see your parents make all sorts of silly, bizarre, irrational, unjust judgments because of their liberalism, and you end up innoculated for life. Kind of like the strongest opponents of communism are often those (like Ayn Rand) who came from communist countries.

On more than one occasion I had people so perplexed at the way I write they demonstrated how I look to them.

Portraying the Republican Party -- a party actually formed to end slavery and that pursued equal rights for a century thereafter until finally defeating Democrat resistance and passing the civil rights legislation of the 1960s -- as racist; while portraying the Democrats -- who used the KKK as shock troops and had an Exalted Cyclops of the KKK as Senator until 2010, as well as being the party of Bull Connor -- as champions of black advancement....is the most telling indication that the media and academia are total lying shitweasels.

As for the man, it's harder to say -- I was at the MLK memorial on the mall over last year's Labor Day holiday.....and the words projected on the walls were good ones. They filled me with disquiet, however, because they have so frequently been used as a club by shitstains like Holder, Sharpton, Jackson, and Obama to call for the exact opposite of their literal, plain meaning.

Yes, claiming the National Socialist German Workers Party wasn't Socialist is A Big Lie....but they, at least, had the excuse that Americans don't do well in foreign languages.

That the Republican Party -- which was founded by anti-slavery activists in 1854 and whose first President, Abraham Lincoln, panicked the South into secession and open revolt by being elected in 1860 -- should be tarred as insufficiently anti-slavery is gross slander.

The anime "Betterman" (IIRC) posited a superhuman with the opposite chirality amino acids.

I really love this time of year. I get up early to go workout before work, and now I've got some daylight in the morning so I can go run. Boy, it's just awesome. I just hope there's not completely pointless government mandate that will arbitrarily move the clocks forward, therefore depriving me of morning sunlight all in the interest of "saving energy," despite all the studies that show it doesn't save a damned kilowatt-hour of electricity. 290 Can you spot one real difference between the policy of Obama and the Democrats, and the Fascist Manifesto:

Politically, the Manifesto calls for:

Universal suffrage with a lowered voting age to 18 years, and voting and electoral office eligibility for all age 25 and up;

Proportional representation on a regional basis;
Voting for women (which was opposed by most other European nations);

Representation at government level of newly created national councils by economic sector;

The abolition of the Italian Senate (at the time, the Senate, as the upper house of parliament, was by process elected by the wealthier citizens, but were in reality direct appointments by the king. It has been described as a sort of extended council of the crown);

The formation of a national council of experts for labor, for industry, for transportation, for the public health, for communications, etc. Selections to be made of professionals or of tradesmen with legislative powers, and elected directly to a general commission with ministerial powers.

In labor and social policy, the Manifesto calls for:

The quick enactment of a law of the state that sanctions an eight-hour workday for all workers;

A minimum wage;

The participation of workers' representatives in the functions of industry commissions;

To show the same confidence in the labor unions (that prove to be technically and morally worthy) as is given to industry executives or public servants;

Reorganization of the railways and the transport sector;

Revision of the draft law on invalidity insurance;

Reduction of the retirement age from 65 to 55.

In military affairs, the Manifesto advocates:

Creation of a short-service national militia with specifically defensive responsibilities;

Armaments factories are to be nationalized;

A peaceful but competitive foreign policy.

In finance, the Manifesto advocates:

A strong progressive tax on capital (envisaging a “partial expropriation” of concentrated wealth);

The seizure of all the possessions of the religious congregations and the abolition of all the bishoprics, which constitute an enormous liability on the Nation and on the privileges of the poor;

Revision of all contracts for military provisions;

The revision of all military contracts and the seizure of 85 percent of the profits therein.

I thought it was just a mild liqueur. Shit, it's 138 proof. I've drunk nothing but wine and beer for at least 12 years. I'm half way through my second one (diluted with water) and shit, it's kicking my ass! If you don't like licorice you wont like absinthe. The first taste I had, well, I thought "Crap, I just spent $65 on one bottle, and I don't like it!" I was very disappointed. Then I downed half the drink and I thought, hey it's not bad really. By the end of the first one, I wanted another. And now I'm halfway through the second and I'm really glad I don't have to drive anywhere tonight. A third would give me the hangover of my life, I'm sure!

But I can see why writers like Oscar Wilde thought it gave them a "lucid drunkenness." I'm kinda shit-faced, but I know enough to correct my typos. I'm not so loaded I can't write sentences or recognize misspelling. It's fascinating really - I've misspelled at least 20 words in this post - but I noticed that I did and went back and corrected them. This stuff puts you in a very odd state of mind.

This hurt the most in winter evenings and in summer mornings. I never did get used to it.

Well, I dont know if it is or not. The stuff I'm drinking is "Grande Absente - Absinthe Orginale" from Provence. They swear it's the orignal absinthe recipe - complete with wormwood - that they were boozing it up with in the 19th century. But you know, the frogs could be lying about that. I don't know if this is the same shit Toulouse-Lautrec was ruining his liver with in the 19th century or not, but it's pretty good stuff whatever it is.

I'm getting a kick out of the special spoon and sugar cube thing.

Heh. I was working for a national CPA firm that was having an IT-related convo in Denver, at the Brown Palace. I was a 26-year-old computer-consultant hired as a Staff Auditor repurposed as an IT asset to do accounting training for computer installations in the 80s.

So I'm sitting at a spot at this MASSIVE table, with maybe 110 other peeps sitting around....and I'm probably the youngest and least IT-ish.....and they gavel this mess to order and start the presentation.

And the far door opens, and this guy comes in with a little cart -- that, inevitably, has a squeaky wheel.

And he comes in, looks around, and while the speaker is trying to keep his presentation together, the cart guy goes "squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak....." Until he pulls up next to me. Whereupon he pours me tea and asks "sugar?" "one lump" "lemon?" "yes, please." Then he goes squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak back to the door he came in.

If you ever wonder how I can stand looking like such an idiot on the ONT without dissolving into a puddle of shame.....it's because I've had practice.

It seems easy enough -- why can't the schools or the government do the same?

Again, YOU CAN GET TO EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE IF YOU CHANGE OPERATING HOURS.....so, why change the time?

It's because changing the hour means it's easier to change the pound (weight); changing the pound makes it easier to change the dollar; changing the dollar makes it easier to change the gallon; changing the gallon makes it easier to change the calorie. If everything is measured with rubber rulers that stretch-and-contract by government whim, everything must be as wonderful as the government assures us that it is.

Or you could get a pocket watch, with the stem on the top, which is equally useful to persons of either handedness.

Speaking of something super-cool, but ultimately pointless, I saw a write-up on the 'net about some guys who converted a classic Western Electric 500 black dial desk telephone to a cellphone. And the dial was functional; they included circuits to turn the dial pulses into tones.

It's more a matter of practicality than a rule. The idea was that you wear the watch on the wrist of the hand you do fewer things with and are thus less likely to damage the watch accidentally or get it snagged on something. Some industrial safety films advise against wearing watches at all while operating machinery.

I'm an odd case in that I write left handed but throw right handed. Though I can throw better than most left handed if I want to surprise someone. My preference in watches leaned toward the practical rather than decorative, so I'd wear it on the left out of reflex conformity more than anything else. Fortunately, those Casio calculator and phone bank watches were plenty tough. Went through about a dozen starting in the late 70s until I gave up wearing watches as redundant alongside my phone. Now the device makers are trying to convince me I should have a watch in conjunction with my phone. They'll need at least a week of run time on a charge before I'll give it the time of day, so to speak.

When you find youself in danger,

When it looks like you will take a lickin', (puk, puk, puk)
There is someone waiting,
Who will hurry up and rescue you,
Just Call for Super Chicken! (puk ack!)

Fred, if you're afraid you'll have to overlook it,
Besides you knew the job was dangerous when you took it (puk ack!)

He will drink his super sauce
And throw the bad guys for a loss
And he will bring them in alive and kickin' (puk, puk, puk)
There is one thing you should learn
When there is no one else to turn to
Call for Super Chicken! (puk, puk, puk)

Posted by: Benjamin Netanfranklin at March 08, 2015 05:02 AM (cIoI4)

496 I want time to reflect natural time as closely as possible. The Sun should be at its highest at noon, not 1 p.m. Yes, I know that there is some natural variation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analemma

Before the 19th century, each town kept its own time, setting its clocks to local noon. When the railroads arrived bringing high-speed travel, that made schedule-keeping difficult bordering on impossible, so "time zones" were invented. This was a good and necessary innovation, and I have no problem with dividing the Earth into 24 time zones.

There is no reason why we can't keep Standard Time year round. Businesses and schools can voluntarily change their hours as they see fit.

Posted by: rickl at March 08, 2015 05:08 AM (sdi6R)

497 Since saving one hour is such a good thing, here's a better proposal.

In April, we'll spring forward once again. And a month after that, again. By mid-summer, we'll have saved so much daylight. Then we pay it back by falling back in August, September, and October.

Or, even better, keep our daylight saving by never falling back. Just spring forward more every year.

Which all makes as much sense as the current system.

Posted by: mindful webworker - save the daylight at March 08, 2015 05:08 AM (439Zu)

498 Personally, I like having more hours of daylight during the day. I heard once that when DST was tried all year round, more children died in the morning in car accidents, since they were going to school and it was dark out. So we must do it for the children. Only other solution would be having school in summer rather than winter, but then kids couldn't help on the farm. There is no perfect solution, but don't blame DST.
