Proposed many times in the last 30 years and always shot down. The USAF doesn't want the A-10 but it does want the funding associated with the airplane program. They hate the idea of the Army getting fixed wings as well. See C-27J.

Good question, and of course the funding to operate and maintain them should be clawed out of the Air Force's budget. Of course, the personnel would have to be transferred to their new service also, and the Air Force wouldn't need the money to pay for them anymore either.

While we're taking things away, we should ask them if there's any other competencies that they don't like and would like to surrender to other services, all of whom would be happy to receive the extra funding...
