I read today that Harvey Weinstein of all people has just greenlighted a biopic of McDonalds' own Ray Kroc, starring Michael Keaton, and that there's hopes it'll be 2016/17 best picture material.

Yes I know it was overexposed but I saw it as blue and black. My better half saw it as exposed and saw it as white and gold.
In my small number of people, the really concrete, detail oriented people saw it as white and gold. The artsy people especially those who work a lot with color saw it as blue and black, which was the real color.
My one daughter saw it as one then the next day, the other. Which freaked her out.
Last night at a friends dinner party, I was the only one who saw blue and black and they are turned on me!!

IIRC, back when the French and Brits "led" the air attack against Libya that got rid of Khadaffhi, they weren't even able to get a squadron each there without the US doing all of the logistics.
Currently, France has 1 aircraft carrier (that may or may not be able to go to sea at a given time) 9 frigates and 6 subs.
Great Britain has 6 destroyers, 13 frigates, 4 ballistic subs, and 6 fleet subs. Plus 1 carrier that is now an amphibious assault ship, plus 3 other amp assualt ships.
Along with Italy's carrier, those ships make up the bulk of the European NATO members' navies.
So yes, the US IS NATO.

Full grown, she's 7-1/2 lbs. Tiny, small cute cat!
Her name is Bonnie, as in "Bonnie Wee Lass".
She gives her 13 lb. littermate brother, living fits. She's like the "Chickenhawk" from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons. They're both longhaired cats. It's not uncommon to find one with a mouth full of the other's fur, after a tussle.
And yes, living with these two cats is like life in a Warner Bros. cartoon. I'm not exaggerating, they're a pair of characters.
At least they sleep a lot; they're cats. Having said that, they sleep a lot on our laps. Rather immobilizing, at times.
Good friends, good company. Gotta love 'em.

All white, except, one had a small gray steak on the top of her head on the left, another same but on the right. Third had no stripe. After the all white cat and one of the others had died, the remaining cat lost her gray stripe - no longer needed to differentiate them.
They sure were cute as kittens. Long ago now. All gone.

Just spent the last 14 hours driving across west Texas. Saw at least 30 big rigs wrecked between Odessa and Ft Worth. I stopped counting at 28. Some gnarly wrecks, most were on their sides, jackknifed or torn apart like a squadron of Warthogs had used them for target practice.

Our navy just shows how economically powerful the US can be. France and Great Britain can't even build ONE aircraft carrier without it blowing their whole budget. We can fund one carrier to be built every year and it would only be about 2% of our defense budget.
Thanks to Obamacare, not only do the taxpayers of the US pay for American's healtcare, but we will also continue to pay for Europe's health care system.

We found it sitting on the hay bales in the barn one day.
It was a pure white Manx.
Oddly enough, I was not allergic to it.
We took it to our vet to get it checked-out/vaccinated and the vet told us that it was a pretty special "show cat", whatever that means.
The neighbor kids killed it with a pellet-gun.
It was a very nice cat...

Not surprisingly, not every Muslim is all that devout. I've been in nominally Muslim African countries where people ignore the prayers, but will dress nice and go to mosque on Fridays, and in those same countries I've had some mighty fine bacon (and smelled it cooking in neighborhoods).

I'd also steer you to contact SMFH to see about Copperas Cove. It's on the backside of Ft. Hood, which is her stomping grounds. She'll know the territory there, whereas I only know it from being highly impressed with it's beauty and ambience, while passin' thru a few times.
Just keep in mind, in this part of Texas, those drives are the norm.
January of '14, I drove from here to Allen, TX, well North of Dallas, to attend an event where Ted Cruz was the keynote speaker, introduced by Bill Whittle. I'd had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Whittle some years before, at the DuToit's, where he was overnighting during a cross-country flight.
That was 265 miles, each way, and I was happy to do it.
If you move to Texas, you'll have to recalibrate your drive-o-meter. It's a solid 38 miles from Galveston to the outer loop around Houston, Beltway 8. A short day for me is 80 miles on the odometer. It's usually twice that, sometimes triple, depending on where the customers are.
Ain't nothing to drive an hour, just to meet a friend for a drink and cigars. You'll get used to the distance and time behind the wheel. At least you see a lot of nice scenery through the windshield!

Sadly, the Ford is about a away from going into service, 7 years after it was laid down. In the 4 years of WW2, we built 18 carriers.

One of the few unfettered areas of capitalism in nyc is mattresses. when I first moved here I was working obscene hours and I had been here for a couple of months but had not had time to get a bed. I was pissing about it over dinner one evening and everyone said "why didn't you just call 1800mattress?"
When I got home around midnight I called 1800mattress and answered a few questions and gave my card info. within an hour, maybe only a half hour I had a couple of guys ringing my buzzer. I buzzed them in, they stormed up two flights of stairs with a mattress and started banging on my door. I am pretty sure if I not opened it when I did they would have kicked it in and started setting everything up.
Anyway, I opened the door, the shoved the mattress into my room ran downstairs and grabbed the frame and box spring and came back up. Everything was assembled and cleaned up less than ten minutes later.
Apparently they have trucks preloaded with several beds driving around 24/7 with beds ready to go.
Of course getting someone to bring you a new cable box requires a weeks notice sito set up an appointment with a 6 hour window.

Little has started making home movies and posting them to Youtube. Mostly stuff about video games, made with the iPad. He posts them on my account and I review each one first. he's got three RL friends who follow my account and comment. I watch what's going on, even if the blather of 10 year olds isn't very interesting.

I'm bemused.
Little has started making home movies and posting them to Youtube.
Mostly stuff about video games, made with the iPad. He posts them on my
account and I review each one first. he's got three RL friends who
follow my account and comment. I watch what's going on, even if the
blather of 10 year olds isn't very interesting.
Well, he also watches videos. I just found out that he watched this

ponys fighting, then making up. The blood is cartoonish, so I guess I'm
(just) OK with that aspect of it.
Thing is, he commented on it. As me, since it's my account he's
watching on (we're going to have a talk about that). I found out when I
got an email that someone had replied to my comment.

Considering that we were building about 5 carriers a year during WW2 and it takes 7 years to build one now, a WW2 type of war will leave everybody without ships in about 6 months.
Fuck, since 1991 they have been planning on building I-73 from Charleston, SC to Sault St Marie, MI. Most of the route would be along existing 4 lane highways that would be brought up to interstate level, and in almost 25 years, 82 miles have been upgraded. And the route has been changed to be from Charleston, SC to Roanoke, VA.
That should tell you how we would be able to get a bunch of ships built quickly these days.

There have been a number of "great ideas" that get floated through several conversations on the blog -- t-shirts, a mega-Vegas-MoMe, a comment-system that allows ampersands, putting up flyers in NYC with a picture of Wicket and text saying: "Have you seen this Ewok? Report possible sightings at ace.mu.nu".... -- that never seem to amount to anything.
OTOH, I think of this place as a great place to hang out, swap jokes and stories, inhabited by some of the warmest and funnest people in the intertubez.
It just hit me weird that it might be taken as a news source. That, and I'm a little grumpy that the weather played cat-and-mouse with raining all day, so I was highly unproductive. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for me to free-associate six or eight stages away from the original stimulus before I hit Post.

I hear ya, but if I'm in a wings-and-beer joint, I'm drinking, so the iron is safely locked up at home. I'm not saying it's not a big deal, but I totally get places that sell a lot of booze saying leave em in the glove box.
Also, concealed means concealed. I tend to ignore laws and regs I find silly or overly burdensome.

First carrier-based USMC close support squadrons used in the Pacific started and were commanded from there. Today, right near the officers club at Miramar, stand 6 palm trees that were transplanted from MCAS Santa Barbara when it was decommissioned after the war.

Just a bit north on 101 - now and for several years closed - is the former Timbers restaurant (east side of 101) - believe the doors are made of wood from the oil pier at Ellwood that took the rounds from the I-boat in 1942.
Old friend's mother grew up on a ranch nearby, just north (beautiful ranch in one of the valleys running perpendicular to the coast, near Reagan's ranch). She said sheriffs came around day of the attack to make sure everyone had shotguns and ammo, and to tell them to black out their windows. They set up a few checkpoints with local men just off the highway.
Whole thing sparked a panic throughout SoCal and along the west coast. Just a few years back the last remnant of the Navy anti-sub blimp station near the Del Mar racetrack in San Diego was removed as part of a lagoon restoration project.

I went to school at the University of Casual Sun-Bathing, and really love the area....and even fought my way back to working there after graduation....but, sadly, had to recognize that I was never going to be able to afford to live there (the same realization I've come to with regard to the entire state).
One of my favorite bits of local history has to do with a street downtown called "Canon Perdido".
To start with, it helps to know that the Spaniards' original development plan for Alta California (the current US state) was to establish four forts (Presidios) in the natural port cities of San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco. Then, along a royal road (El Camino Real) that ran from San Diego to Sonoma, they established 21 Missions to support the colony and convert the locals to Catholicism. They were spaced roughly a day's travel apart.
So, Santa Barbara was a big deal at the time -- having both a Mission and a Presidio, it was substantially more important that Los Angeles.

I "endured" some time at UC State Beach myself. Probably one of the few colleges where pranks included filling an entire dorm common bathroom with kelp (freshly picked up at the beach 100 yards away).
SB itself is sort of unrecognizable. The whole State Street redevelopment was well done, but ..... meh. Just another plush CA entertainment/tourist street now. And .... a rush hour on 101 now. Was shocked - didn't really believe it - when the woman at a winery up in Paso told us we'd better get past SB before 1PM on a Sunday (going south). She was right.
Nice thing about SB is that it acts as a buffer and barrier. Few from the LA-plex seem to venture just another 90 minutes north, where central coast remains as beautiful and quiet as when I was a kid. With great wine and increasingly very good eating.

Franciscans, which the Portolà party had celebrated the previous day. The original Porzioncula church -- where the Franciscan movement started -- is near Assisi and is so named because it is on such a tiny piece of ground. Porzion-cula would approximately be "portion-tiny".

Santa Barbara is northwest of LA and on the coast. With the sea to the south and mountains to the north, it has been described as the American Riviera.

Where urban areas like Ferguson were controlled completely by 'protestors' who would invade and take over government buildings in neighboring communities. Where the Rules of Engagement prevented Law Enforcement from responding to any action by the protesters, where LEO had to stand and watch. Where LEO could not use physical restraint or rubber bullets or tear gas. Where LEO had to retreat rather than confront because confrontation was provocative, yet protesters could 'challenge' Law Enforcement and LEO had to retreat or be charged by Federal DOJ agents with civil rights violations.
Where Islamists had their own sovereign enclave where US Law did not apply, and sent out raiding parties that would retreat to the sanctuary of those sovereign territories.
Where Obama was still President, and the country was divided into urban areas openly rejecting US Law, and rural areas subject to oppressive Federal Regulations, where rural communities had to worry about raiders and worry about Federal DOJ who would charge rural LEO with violations of Federal Law should they attempt to defend those communities from urban raiding partings.

It was a good piece, and some good comments. My 'ptsd' is a slight exaggeration, and honestly, I don't know what is going to happen, or what we'll have to do about it.
We don't need (or want) right wing death squads like South America went through, and I suspect some comments suggesting that tactic were mobys while others must might be venting overpressure.
But Ferguson is a good example. We don't want a Federal DOJ threatening LEO with civil rights violation for putting down riots. And we don't want protesters thinking they have a right to riot.
And I really don't want squads of armed night riders burning me out of house and home after looting and raping. (I'm thinking Rhodesian farmers being driven off their farms by black revolutionary gangs.)

We're supposed to wake up tomorrow with 6 more inches of snow. If so, that should put us on record for snowiest winter.
It was 1994-1994 with 107 + inches. Most of snow fell from January 23-February 16.
It's a mess here & my home phone isn't working because I have everything from Comcast but stopped them from coming here because cable box is buried & they expected us to shovel it. I tried to tell man in Tucson to imagine 7.5 feet of snow that's been shoveled out of driveway, sidewalk, roof of one porch & no one in their right mind would shovel snow that's out of driving area.
if I'm in my living room I can see call coming on. It's mostly 854 area codes that are telemarketing cos.

To be frank, it sucks.
I have over 200 roses that are completely covered with 8-12 feet of snow. Snow is good to keep them insulated but we had single digit temps in January before snow started.
Jerk across the street has had car parked in front of my house at edge of our driveway. His number is unlisted & I looked for it but don't have it. He's got a foot he can move back now. I can't get out of my driveway because of him& snow mountains, unless I want to dent my car.
