If you were to tell Spock there was global warming, he'd whip out his tricorder, take his own readings, and tell you you were wrong. The War on Catgirls

When that cat gets older there will be a war there that will end badly. Cats and birds, not a fair fight. Cats and dogs, much more interesting. But still my cat wins those too.
So the Pope says money is dung? Well he and his associates were and are more than happy to accept said dung from my poor parents and relatives every Sunday. "Interesting. Russia's military exercises are way bigger than NATO's."
Of course - it puts large amounts of troops right on the borders of the Baltic states Putin wants to gradually take over (which is why Estonia and Lithuania have introduced measures to bring back "temporary" conscription). Here's a good blog post by "Streetwise Professor" on teh Twitters - "Is NATO a threat to Russia? If only." http://tinyurl.com/nyef8g9 I was particularly surprised that Germany's readiness is so poor - one of their "elite" units had to use broomsticks painted black as props during a recent NATO exercise. For Red Sonja casting... how about Adrianne Palicki from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Make her a redhead and she'd be great in the role. Would just be a revision of the role she's doing in AoS and she did in GI Joe.

I laugh (not at the horde, but because of it) in that though I'm pro-recreational marijuana, gay marriage, and abortion (I don't hide behind the euphemism "choice" though I support a ban on partial-birth and late-term abortions unless the mother is going to die (and only in the latter, not the former)), I'm orders of magnitude more conservative than the GOP. Don't just put up a border fence, mine the G-D thing. Get rid of at least a 1/2 dozen cabinets, including Vet Affairs (WTF isn't this part of DoD), very pro-2nd, 9th, and 10th amendments, hard money, congressional term limits, und so weiter (and so on). Posted by: Thrawn at February 28, 2015 10:36 PM (d7XFS) IIRC, back when the French and Brits "led" the air attack against Libya that got rid of Khadaffhi, they weren't even able to get a squadron each there without the US doing all of the logistics. Currently, France has 1 aircraft carrier (that may or may not be able to go to sea at a given time) 9 frigates and 6 subs. Great Britain has 6 destroyers, 13 frigates, 4 ballistic subs, and 6 fleet subs. Plus 1 carrier that is now an amphibious assault ship, plus 3 other amp assualt ships. Along with Italy's carrier, those ships make up the bulk of the European NATO members' navies. So yes, the US IS NATO. That "Why Conservatives Will Miss Spock" link completely misunderstood/misrepresented the point of "A Taste of Armegeddon." The computer wasn't just simulating disasters; it was fighting a war. Both sides were using computer simulations to determine casualties rather than conventional weapons, in order to preserve their physical history and culture. The point of the episode is that war HAS to be brutal, ugly, and destructive, because that's the only way it will ever end. If you sanitize it, no one will ever get tired and more people will die. As Robert E. Lee said, "It is well that war is so terrible, that we should grow too fond of it." The author of the piece took a really cool and profound episode and made a wooden, forced political point out of it.
I wouldn't normally say anything, but that's probably my favorite episode, and it really rubs me the wrong way how they represented it. Posted by: 4thgengamecock at February 28, 2015 11:23 PM (IGovk) 105

I've got a 99.9999% black cat. Except, right on the top of her widdwe biddy haid, there's a white speck, about the 1/2 the size of a small grain of rice.
Full grown, she's 7-1/2 lbs. Tiny, small cute cat! Her name is Bonnie, as in "Bonnie Wee Lass". She gives her 13 lb. littermate brother, living fits. She's like the "Chickenhawk" from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons. They're both longhaired cats. It's not uncommon to find one with a mouth full of the other's fur, after a tussle. And yes, living with these two cats is like life in a Warner Bros. cartoon. I'm not exaggerating, they're a pair of characters. At least they sleep a lot; they're cats. Having said that, they sleep a lot on our laps. Rather immobilizing, at times. Good friends, good company. Gotta love 'em. When it was a full grown farm tomcat, my mom fell ill and returned it to her cousin's farm. We heard it only took two weeks to become the alpha male in the barn...

As for the Death Star (under-construction) dress - I give it 5/10. It's pretty. But it draws attention to itself; it is too obviously a marketing ploy. A *great* dress calls attention to the woman who wears it. The dress posted here draws my eye to this woman's kneecaps (what's the point?).

Years ago, had a feral mom cat show up, birth a litter of five, and die almost before they were weaned. Three of the cats were white triplets.
All white, except, one had a small gray steak on the top of her head on the left, another same but on the right. Third had no stripe. After the all white cat and one of the others had died, the remaining cat lost her gray stripe - no longer needed to differentiate them. They sure were cute as kittens. Long ago now. All gone. Carol, one of my best friends on the planet lives in Marble Falls, so my making the (4 hr.) drive ain't no tang. Hell, I'll probably get him to help with the Marble Falls part of the tour, as he spent years and years looking for the property he ended up buying.
I'd also steer you to contact SMFH to see about Copperas Cove. It's on the backside of Ft. Hood, which is her stomping grounds. She'll know the territory there, whereas I only know it from being highly impressed with it's beauty and ambience, while passin' thru a few times. Just keep in mind, in this part of Texas, those drives are the norm. January of '14, I drove from here to Allen, TX, well North of Dallas, to attend an event where Ted Cruz was the keynote speaker, introduced by Bill Whittle. I'd had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Whittle some years before, at the DuToit's, where he was overnighting during a cross-country flight. That was 265 miles, each way, and I was happy to do it. If you move to Texas, you'll have to recalibrate your drive-o-meter. It's a solid 38 miles from Galveston to the outer loop around Houston, Beltway 8. A short day for me is 80 miles on the odometer. It's usually twice that, sometimes triple, depending on where the customers are. Ain't nothing to drive an hour, just to meet a friend for a drink and cigars. You'll get used to the distance and time behind the wheel. At least you see a lot of nice scenery through the windshield! DC, RWC, yankee -- needless to say, alcohol consumption is a test too. Note that in most African "Muslim" countries, beer is the beverage of choice due to the water being undrinkable. And I have worked with a "Jordanian" (i.e., Palestinian) Muslim who drinks like a fish, and know Pakistanis who do too. When the flight fom Riyadh to London leaves Saudi airspace, the women all go to the bathroom and change out of their ninja outfits and the booze starts flowing.
I'm guessing it's like everything else - you have various degrees of compliance. I never really was around any Mormons growing up and was very surprised the first time I saw them getting drunk. Muslims are probably the same way, especially when they're away from the flagpole. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at March 01, 2015 12:05 AM (5f5bM) 214

A while ago I saw a few minutes of her noon show. as they would go to or return from commercial the girls on the couch were all bouncing and bopping to the music, save for tantaros. she has clearly made a decision not to do so for some reason related to taking herself far too seriously. someone needs to have a conversation with her, I even volunteer. listen, tantaros, that's your name right? You wear short tight dresses with stripper heels and sit in the leg chair in every show you are in. you are playing sex to the hilt to get and keep your job. start bouncing your fucking foot to the music and stop acting like you are some serious thinker who is above selling anything related to sex to get you stupid job. I was pissing about it over dinner one evening and everyone said "why didn't you just call 1800mattress?" When I got home around midnight I called 1800mattress and answered a few questions and gave my card info. within an hour, maybe only a half hour I had a couple of guys ringing my buzzer. I buzzed them in, they stormed up two flights of stairs with a mattress and started banging on my door. I am pretty sure if I not opened it when I did they would have kicked it in and started setting everything up. Anyway, I opened the door, the shoved the mattress into my room ran downstairs and grabbed the frame and box spring and came back up. Everything was assembled and cleaned up less than ten minutes later. Apparently they have trucks preloaded with several beds driving around 24/7 with beds ready to go. Of course getting someone to bring you a new cable box requires a weeks notice sito set up an appointment with a 6 hour window. Posted by: yankeefifth at March 01, 2015 12:17 AM (gsfK5) 228

Fuck, since 1991 they have been planning on building I-73 from Charleston, SC to Sault St Marie, MI. Most of the route would be along existing 4 lane highways that would be brought up to interstate level, and in almost 25 years, 82 miles have been upgraded. And the route has been changed to be from Charleston, SC to Roanoke, VA. That should tell you how we would be able to get a bunch of ships built quickly these days. Posted by: yankeefifth at March 01, 2015 12:38 AM (gsfK5) There have been a number of "great ideas" that get floated through several conversations on the blog -- t-shirts, a mega-Vegas-MoMe, a comment-system that allows ampersands, putting up flyers in NYC with a picture of Wicket and text saying: "Have you seen this Ewok? Report possible sightings at ace.mu.nu".... -- that never seem to amount to anything. OTOH, I think of this place as a great place to hang out, swap jokes and stories, inhabited by some of the warmest and funnest people in the intertubez. It just hit me weird that it might be taken as a news source. That, and I'm a little grumpy that the weather played cat-and-mouse with raining all day, so I was highly unproductive. Posted by: rhomboid at March 01, 2015 01:37 AM (afQnV) I went to school at the University of Casual Sun-Bathing, and really love the area....and even fought my way back to working there after graduation....but, sadly, had to recognize that I was never going to be able to afford to live there (the same realization I've come to with regard to the entire state). One of my favorite bits of local history has to do with a street downtown called "Canon Perdido". To start with, it helps to know that the Spaniards' original development plan for Alta California (the current US state) was to establish four forts (Presidios) in the natural port cities of San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco. Then, along a royal road (El Camino Real) that ran from San Diego to Sonoma, they established 21 Missions to support the colony and convert the locals to Catholicism. They were spaced roughly a day's travel apart. So, Santa Barbara was a big deal at the time -- having both a Mission and a Presidio, it was substantially more important that Los Angeles. And in being such a big deal, great things occurred there -- like http://tinyurl.com/lcnhh8k Posted by: cthulhu at March 01, 2015 02:02 AM (T1005) 315

I "endured" some time at UC State Beach myself. Probably one of the few colleges where pranks included filling an entire dorm common bathroom with kelp (freshly picked up at the beach 100 yards away). SB itself is sort of unrecognizable. The whole State Street redevelopment was well done, but ..... meh. Just another plush CA entertainment/tourist street now. And .... a rush hour on 101 now. Was shocked - didn't really believe it - when the woman at a winery up in Paso told us we'd better get past SB before 1PM on a Sunday (going south). She was right. Nice thing about SB is that it acts as a buffer and barrier. Few from the LA-plex seem to venture just another 90 minutes north, where central coast remains as beautiful and quiet as when I was a kid. With great wine and increasingly very good eating. Los Angeles was originally "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula", or "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the River of the tiny bit".
The LA river was named that by the Portolà expedition because it was the name of a special annual feast day for the Franciscans, which the Portolà party had celebrated the previous day. The original Porzioncula church -- where the Franciscan movement started -- is near Assisi and is so named because it is on such a tiny piece of ground. Porzion-cula would approximately be "portion-tiny". Posted by: cthulhu at March 01, 2015 02:20 AM (T1005) 319

The strangest Jennifer Love Hewitt early appearance is cable staple 'The Trojan War.' This is a type of movie Hollywood cranks out every five years or so, in which a teenage boy is intensely pursuing a blonde while failing to notice the dark haired girl next store has grown up to be drop dead gorgeous. An 80s example of this was 'My Secret Admirer' which put the girl next door Lori Loughlin in the position of playing Cyrano to C. Thomas Howell in his pursuit of Kelly Preston. Will Friedle is killing himself to procure condoms and make a study date with Marley Shelton while oblivious to the fact that his childhood pal has grown up to be Jennifer Love Hewitt. The viewer watches in stunned amazement and wants to shout at him, "Dude, she's Jennifer Love Hewitt and she wants you!" Posted by: Epobirs at March 01, 2015 02:57 AM (IdCqF) 325

PTSD nightmare, can't sleep, triggered by Weird dave and his fundamental Molon Labe post.
What would it be like living in a country where urban areas were no go zones for white christians, or jews. Where urban areas like Ferguson were controlled completely by 'protestors' who would invade and take over government buildings in neighboring communities. Where the Rules of Engagement prevented Law Enforcement from responding to any action by the protesters, where LEO had to stand and watch. Where LEO could not use physical restraint or rubber bullets or tear gas. Where LEO had to retreat rather than confront because confrontation was provocative, yet protesters could 'challenge' Law Enforcement and LEO had to retreat or be charged by Federal DOJ agents with civil rights violations. Where Islamists had their own sovereign enclave where US Law did not apply, and sent out raiding parties that would retreat to the sanctuary of those sovereign territories. Where Obama was still President, and the country was divided into urban areas openly rejecting US Law, and rural areas subject to oppressive Federal Regulations, where rural communities had to worry about raiders and worry about Federal DOJ who would charge rural LEO with violations of Federal Law should they attempt to defend those communities from urban raiding partings. What would it be like living in a country where urban areas were no go zones for white christians, or jews.
Where urban areas like Ferguson were controlled completely by 'protestors' who would invade and take over government buildings in neighboring communities. I can't get over the irony of a fast talking video character telling us about authors who invented new words.
Wouldn't it make more sense to use the written word? Oh, right, those almost subliminal subtitles that the functionally illiterate would never be able to read before the text disappeared; subliminal text with a poorly selected colored font that can't be differentiated from the complex background of books while the view struggles to understand the fast talking person in the vid. Well, alrighty then. Could the fast talking video character then at least use 'diction' and 'enunciation' so the new words could be heard? Maybe rhyme would be better. It would help the viewer remember the new words, except white people can't rap. Posted by: Starvin Arthur at March 01, 2015 03:29 AM (XPoBY) 332

My 'ptsd' is a slight exaggeration, and honestly, I don't know what is going to happen, or what we'll have to do about it. We don't need (or want) right wing death squads like South America went through, and I suspect some comments suggesting that tactic were mobys while others must might be venting overpressure. But Ferguson is a good example. We don't want a Federal DOJ threatening LEO with civil rights violation for putting down riots. And we don't want protesters thinking they have a right to riot. And I really don't want squads of armed night riders burning me out of house and home after looting and raping. A "toccata", by the way, is a piece to show off "touch" -- to show that you had full control and mastery of the various means of eliciting sound from your instrument, here a pipe organ. German organs (like those Bach was most familiar with) mechanically linked their pipes -- so if you were playing three sets of pipes on one keyboard against one set of pipes on another, you likely had to press three times as hard on the first (plus additional friction in the linkages). To play a "dancing" melody between the two was partially an athletic accomplishment and partially a balancing of rhythm and effort. Posted by: cthulhu at March 01, 2015 04:54 AM (T1005) 375

VIA,
Have a good day. We're supposed to wake up tomorrow with 6 more inches of snow. If so, that should put us on record for snowiest winter. It was 1994-1994 with 107 + inches. Most of snow fell from January 23-February 16. It's a mess here & my home phone isn't working because I have everything from Comcast but stopped them from coming here because cable box is buried & they expected us to shovel it. I tried to tell man in Tucson to imagine 7.5 feet of snow that's been shoveled out of driveway, sidewalk, roof of one porch & no one in their right mind would shovel snow that's out of driving area. if I'm in my living room I can see call coming on. It's mostly 854 area codes that are telemarketing cos. Posted by: Carol at March 01, 2015 06:46 AM (sj3Ax) 397
Morning all.
So, Carol, what is it like living on an Ice Planet? Here in southern Indiana, most of our stuff is melted (still have a could inches of a snow/ice mix on the ground though. According to the weather channel we are supposed to get snow and Ice this morning, followed by rain. The weather app on my phone says no snow/ice, just rain. Right now I am hoping the phone is right. Well, I hope everyone is well along to getting their implements preseason maintenance completed in preparation for planting season.
Of course, those with livestock will be busy taking care of their herds. Still, It's March, and everyone gets restless about now. Posted by: Chalmers Crabbage, Farm Implements LLC at March 01, 2015 06:59 AM (AX6QS) 399
There will be growth. In the Spring.

Aetius451AD,
To be frank, it sucks. I have over 200 roses that are completely covered with 8-12 feet of snow. Snow is good to keep them insulated but we had single digit temps in January before snow started. Jerk across the street has had car parked in front of my house at edge of our driveway. His number is unlisted & I looked for it but don't have it. He's got a foot he can move back now. I can't get out of my driveway because of him& snow mountains, unless I want to dent my car. Posted by: Carol at March 01, 2015 07:31 AM (sj3Ax) 401
