A Little of This...A Little of That [CBD]

Pigs sighted flying over Georgia: The Student Government Association (SGA) of the University of Georgia on Tuesday passed the first college resolution this year calling for the school to invest more in its relations with Israel.

The trend in our increasingly anti-freedom universities has been to vilify Israel and make organized attempts to Boycott, Divest and Sanction through student-controlled organizations.

The 1911 design is also known for feed-way stoppages, a malfunction caused when a round gets stuck feeding into the chamber, experts said. Horizontal and vertical stovepipes -- types of malfunctions that occur when an empty shell casing gets caught in the ejection port -- are also a problem with the 1911 design.

I noticed this yesterday and was surprised at the descriptions of the 1911. I have one, and have put thousands of rounds through it with a grand total of two stovepipe jams, one of which I blame on underpowered reloads. Marines Allow Operators to Choose Glocks over MARSOC .45s

7 I've owned a couple 1911s and they handled ball pretty well with few issues but most everything else had the same issues as described. I really like the .45 but if I were looking for a new one it wouldn't likely be a 1911.

Posted by: Bob from table9 at February 28, 2015 03:31 PM (WNERA)

8 No real interest in Kid Rock either, except:

- After the USS Cole spent some tense nights and days trying to avoid sinking, and then powered up to steam away, the captain gave permission for the crew to play some inspirational music on their way out. First they played "The Star Spangled Banner." Then "American Badass" starts belting out over the harbor. The captain sent the XO to go get that shit turned off. The XO moved out smartly, then...found an urgent situation that needed his attention before he could carry out the order.

- Not coincidentally, Kid Rock is a big supporter of the military, which is cool.

- Kid Rock is going to be called racist for this, which is not.

9 My Springield 1911 will eat anything I feed it. My Rock Island? Not so much. Been back to RIA once to unjam a freaky slide-barrel mating that defied God's laws. New extractor. Stronger recoil spring. Weird stuff. It's always something with that thing.

CBD, same here. Only malfunctions on a 1911 (stovepipes) I've had were due to my loads sometimes being light. I have always had a tight quality assurance approach in my reloading, but have tightened it up further with direct visual confirmation of powder charge (amount nut just squib/no squib).
Hard to believe that people focused and able enough to be in MARSOC units would have trouble mastering the 1911. Grip safety problem? Really? Oh well. 9mm can get the job done too. Up to the shooter.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 28, 2015 03:32 PM (afQnV)

12 Actually, I do have something to contribute. Here in KS, they are about to do away with concealed carry laws. By that I mean, no requirements at all. Conceal would be the same as open carry.

Not sure about that one.

HH - "constitutional carry". A rarity in modern political parlance - a dead-accurate descriptive term for a concept.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Which reminds me. All of you smart, responsible gun owners out there (we've got a good number here), do a mental exercise. Just in rough terms, calculate what actual difference ALL of the gun laws make - in terms of actual public safety, bottom line crime stats, etc. I'm including even things that are now simply unquestioned and part of the landscape, like background checks.

Best answer: none, nothing, no difference.

The point is not to argue for elimination of all such laws. It's to point out that, being serious and objective and logical, they really don't do a damn thing (positive). The nation grew and thrived for nearly 150 years without any gun laws of note (not counting local and usually temporary restrictions like the Earps had in a few towns they ran). Crime involving firearms skyrocketed just around the time the (federal) laws came into effect.

Anyway, HH, look at Arizona, Vermont, Wyoming, Alaska. Yes, apples, organges, mangoes, and carambola - but still, impossible to find any difference it makes for them to have const. carry.

NGU, haven't been to Israel for 30 years. Now married, so one gigantic bonus is off the table (list of "only go unaccompanied" countries, when I was single: Israel, Brazil, Vietnam). Had a funny story where a lady's man/good lookingcolleague (you'd know the name he went on to become a congressman) and I tried to have a photo taken of us with the incredly hot sentries in front of the Def. Min in Tel Aviv, where we were meeting with Rabin. They of course (in halting English, adding to the hawtness) protested, saying it was a security location. I laughed and said "it's OK, we've got you covered, 30,000 nukes". Didn't register.

The female IDF and border guards would (obviously) be shrink-fitting their pants. Yowza. I imagine the Russki/Ukrainian influx has only, uh, "exacerbated" the problem.

47 Not a huge Kid Rock fan, but he is right. How can Beyonce be so huge when she is a marginal talent? First of all, she is not a great vocalist. As voices go, her tone is absolutely horrible. Barbara Streisand is a great singer, Whitney Houston is a great singer, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, and Linda Ronstadt - great singers, all. Beyonce's artistic choices are trite, childish, and often vulgar on many levels. There is no artistry to her body of music. There is no visual artistry in any of her videos. Beyonce's music lacks depth and intelligence. Is she largely uneducated? I don't know, but as evidenced by her work, she comes across as someone who is not educated and has an average to low IQ. This is largely illiterate music for a largely illiterate audience. it is ignorant art. She is a beautiful woman, and she may be a very nice person, but please, let's not pretend that she is a great artist. She is not, and technically speaking, she is not, by any means, a great vocalist. Just because you can hit a note doesn't mean it sounds good when you're doing it, and just because someone sings loud doesn't mean they are a good singer. Can we stop pretending that this woman is "great" now?

Have had real trouble getting upset about Putin. At least for the Ukraine/domestic strongman stuff. All right down the long-term Russian mainstream (I'm talking centuries). The half-clever s**t with Iran, different story.

Also perhaps a bit of schadenfreude watching Europe so utterly humiliated. Most of them richly deserve it. If they could have just bestirred themselves to, you know, not snipe and posture and kvetch when the US was standing up to utterly insane evil post-9/11, might feel a bit different. (not talking the militaries or intel services of most of Europe, which are generally fine and actually feel much the same as I do about their own countries and political classes)

Plus of course Putin's humiliations of Obama have been hilarious. And no I have not one smidgen of residual instinctive identification with the POTUS or the US when it comes to these situations. None. Will again if it's merited, but not until then.

I disagree. There is a point where musicians and other artists want to feel like they have actually created something with artistic merit. Apparently, that was the industry buzz about Beyonce's most recent record. She was trying to experiment. It was supposed to be cutting edge. It was supposed to ground breaking. The number of writers and producers on this record were really what was remarkable about it. She is a studio product, and I bet the engineers must have a heck of time trying to get that thin, shrill voice to sound as good as it does. She must be a nightmare to eq.

irongrampa, this govt. is a symptom, not a cause. And my point was to praise our heritage. But .....

Sure there is no measurable impact on policy from two consecutive historic landslide mid-term elections, so curiously there seems to be a cleanly broken connection between popular will and governance on one side. But the absurd unfit people in power in the admin. got elected *twice* by "your" country.

Do as you please, but be aware distinctions between the admin. and the people down your street and mine who elected them (*twice*) are pretty silly. If it's a representative republic, then ..... no dodging the implications, in any direction.

167 Failure to feed in the 1911 can be minimized by polishing the ramp. Remember, it was originally designed for ball ammo. You may have problems with hollowpoints.

I was always told that stovepiping was caused by limpwristing: allowing your hand to rotate opward from recoil.

169 Ahhhhh.....

Home from work at last!

We completed Vac System number two today....mostly finish work, and cleanup stuff. The Big Scary was yesterday, when I tested all the electrical work, (which I did)......for the first time.....in front of the customer, and my company's owner. Other than having to swap two phases at the electric motor, everything worked flawlessly.

The wiring itself was straightforward, and simple. 480 volts, 3 phase. 30kw explosion proof heater, 25 horsepower electric motor, circuit breakers, 480 to 120 30 amp transformer, exhaust fan, lighting, junction boxes, outlets, etc...all explosion proof.

The challenge for me was designing, building, and wiring up the motor control system. I've never done this from scratch.....one usually purchases the systems prebuilt, and prewired, but I figure I saved the company quite a bit of money by doing this work in house.

If our customer is good to his word, we can expect orders for another ten of these systems, and after that, we may start building them for our own rental business.

Now might be a good time to ask for a raise.

170 Thing is Burt, I have heard many people say the same thing!

"She's hot! She's got a great ******." I rarely hear that people
like her say it's because she's such a great singer/writer. The stardom
she's achieved seems to be because of her looks and that is what many of
her fans gravitate towards. The Kardashian effect.

I really have no use for either of them... or anybody in pop music, really. So as an objective observer, what I'm seeing is one pop music performer badmouthing another one, in a very juvenile way.

I'm not saying anyone should like one or the other, and really don't expect anyone would change their minds on these people based on my opinion. But I do think people will excuse all sorts of bad behavior, simply because they like a performer.

Best example I can give from my own experience, I used to be a huge Elvis Costello fan, but it got increasingly difficult to overlook the fact that he's a huge prick. At one point I just decided I couldn't listen to his music anymore. Took me longer than it should have, really.

JackStraw, thanks. My gawd, I actually forced myself to look at the article - at least skimit - and then the comments.

My gawd, the pristine, relentless, clueless, jaw-dropping reliance on logical fallacy among the AGW cultists and their pathetic followers.

Climate "forcing" via CO2 concentration is ITSELF a hypothesis - and not a very plausible one - that is impossible to test because, duh, the whole system is not understood or characterized, therefore the importance (if any) of any given variable is impossible to analyze.

But all of these discussions simply assume CO2 significance. Even "skeptics" (WTF is that doing as a meaningful distinguishing descriptor in anything connected to real science? it's the norm) make this gigantic, fatal, game-ending fallacious assumption.

It's the proper use of "to beg the question", i.e. to assume that which is being discussed or argued about (not "raising" a question).

Not sure what the argument was about but then it's Hollywood. Maybe which of the three of them is the prettiest? ;-)

@ 178

Arguing about global warming or cooling is an exercise in futility.

Both occur, both are natural, a single species cannot materially affect either one.

Here's a solution,if it is felt one is needed.

Warming--take the damn jacket off.

Cooling--put the damn jacket back on.

Doing either will ensure or greatly enhance survival chances.

This is really a fascinating event. I don't buy for a second that Netanyahu is doing this speech for his own domestic political reasons, I think he is genuinely afraid of the deal Obama is willing to give Iran. And a lot of Dems seem far more interested in protecting Obama than defending America and our allies.

198 And on the pistol kerflufgflle? Started with a .45 in 1968 and last carried an M9 in service. As for today, I own a 1911 and sometimes carry it or a Glock G26 9MM with G19 mags. Here lately though, my carry gun has been a Ruger LCR .357. My work gun is a Glock G22 .40 cal. I love them all. My opinion is that Marines can be equally business-like with either a 1911 or a G19. They know their work and their tools. Let them get on with it.

199 I like Rihanna. Her voice is not amazing but she sings in a style that makes the best of what she has and has had some pretty entertaining songs. But It helps that nobody tried to sell her as the best ever.

201 Re: 1911's I shot IPSC back in the day(before it got all racegunny). I had a Springfield 1911 that never stovepiped even with my little hands (5'4" 135). It's all in the magazine feed lips and the underside of the extractor. Mine would chamber empty cases just fine. Then I went to a SW 625 still with the same little hands.

203 if you are having feed problems with your 1911 series, check the follower of your magazines: thy should have a little raised dot on the plate.

turns out that that's there to keep the next round from moving about as the slide comes back.

G*d knew what he was doing when he added that to the design, but many people who came along later to make copies figured it was something that didn't need to be there.

never EVER question John Browning's design choices.

204 The 1911 is a glorious thing. That said, they are generally finicky and we all know it.

Untested reloads. Nuff said.
