He was at some environmental forum, and he said, "How many people here believe that the earth is increasingly polluted and that our natural resources are being exhausted?" Naturally, every hand shot up. He said, "Is there any evidence that could dissuade you?" Nothing. Again: "Is there any evidence I could give you - anything at all - that would lead you to reconsider these assumptions?" Not a stir. Simon then said, "Well, excuse me, I'm not dressed for church."
I love that story, for what it says about the fixity of these beliefs, immune to evidence, reason, or anything else.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the Clinton Foundation accepted millions of dollars in foreign government donations while Hillary was serving in the State Department. Most of those donations were technically allowed due to the many exemptions included in the so-called "ban." However, at least one of those donations-$500,000 from the Algerian government-violated the ban, and was not reported to the State Department's ethics office.

There's so much wrong with that statement it might take weeks to straighten out.
Now, I'll grant it's possible he's educated himself since then (this was months ago, and he's a smart guy), or that he has "evolved" on the issue. But it's easy to say "I'm 100% 2nd Amendment." It's much harder to call for, say, allowing civilians to purchase automatic weapons again.

Apparently he was a practicing Christian, and has some ethnic Jewish heritage. It is also apparent no one was saying this in any way to disparage him, but since a political rival had been heard to have referred to him as BEING Jewish, his response was that this was some sort of attack on him.
Now, I think we can speculate as to why a Republican in Missouri might talk about a rival as being Jewish, and that certainly does not say anything good about the person doing so.

Courts do not (or should not) get to decide what is "the press." The 1st Amendment is absolute. Period.
Remember, "the courts" including the Supreme Court, once thought of slaves as property, and believed in "separate but equal."
The courts can only give opinions. Right and Wrong must hinge upon philosophy.

Yes, all finished. Got all the pages into a loose-leaf binder, and put a steel plate on top, and heavy weight on that. Hopefully it will straighten out some of the curl. In the midst of building a bastard distributor for the TR6. Mechanical advance mechanism was buggered up. So I am combining the bowl and advance components of a Prestolite distributor from a Studebaker Champion with the shaft and base of the original Lucas distributor. Shaft is mostly built, and runs true when spun in the lathe. Lucas body is cut down. Next on the agenda is to clean up the cast-iron prestolite bowl, and fit it to a shoulder that I will machine into the base of the Lucas unit. Wish me luck.
And the game plan is to add a reluctor wheel and pickup coil from a Dodge slant six, for an electronic distributor.

I agree. Even without the 2nd amendment issue, I'm not convinced he could handle a national political campaign. He's a brilliant man, and he's more conservative than a lot of republicans, but that doesn't mean he's ready to be president.

They have electronics which require some sort of 'signature' from an authorized user. Some concepts have pressure switches which read the users grip, others may have fingerprint readers, etc... Engineering wise, should they fail safe or fails secure, which means??? Legal wise, is it an 'infringement' and can they be remotely disabled? And then I got bullied a lot. And then I bought a house close to work which was close by some sketchy apartments (best I could afford).
So, a (too) long education on how no-one else was ever going to save me in a crisis, plus a short and unpleasant (if indirect) education on the potential of "crisis" - ended up in me being the way I am today.
I'm not even going to call my current stance "pro-2nd". The Constitution is dead; has been for years, possibly for over a century. The government won't save you. Only you can save you. If AR-15 ammo is "banned" then go get the shells printed.

Besides looking for a job I guess things are going ok. The basketball season for the JV girls ends this Saturday. Quite frankly I'm looking forward to it although I will miss those knuckleheads. A lot of people who were raised in city areas grew up without guns in the home. They view them as scary and ownership of them as "different".
I was raised in an area where almost everyone owned guns and it was common for teenagers to hunt and use guns responsibly. Guns are no more dangerous than cars if used correctly.
There's a disconnect going on, and many liberals don't have the open-mindedness that it would take to understand gun ownership.

Sure. And that's not to discount the idea that outsiders can and should be encouraged to run for long-shot positions.
In Rice's case, she could have started some foundation or charity in 2008 and worked that into some kind of base of success that would allow her to go above and beyond the normal routes to a senatorial campaign.
Outsiders should run. But they sure as shit better have more to offer than just a resume. We're still in the age of programmed media, but we're in a new phase that allows figures to break out of the MSM labeling and caging.
Building an image outside and above the MSM is necessary for conservatives to win. I see no candidate doing this kind of necessary ground work.

Of 4 brothers and sisters who married, my mom liked to prospective partners a lot. She didn't particularly like a third, and disliked the guy my youngest sister married.
Well, the 2 she liked the most, the marriages ended in divorce. The 2 she didn't like the so much turned out to be the best spouses, dependable, stable, and nice. In fairness for one of the divorces, my oldest sister was at fault, but the marriage was a nasty mistake. He was too passive, and she was a narcissist.

Were I a Democrat, I'd say that's a legitimate argument to make *in the primaries.* He also was a state senator as well. Again, successful campaign.
In the Presidential election, that qualification is a liability, not a strength.
My point is that people are dismissing Carson because he hasn't been in politics long. Reagan ran for President when he had been just an actor a year and half earlier. Very apt comparison. Neither Reagan or Carson should be President at that point in their political careers but they shouldn't be criticized for being in the mix.

Reagan was a nationally known figure. Yes, it was because he was an actor but the name was fixed in the public's mind. The value of being a known name may not have the most noble of origins but it wins elections.

So far, the only topic on which Carson has spoken, where his particular expertise puts him in a position of authority is gunshot wounds in emergency rooms.
Guess what, he's against them. And it appears he thinks that means you shouldn't have access to guns either.
Reagan was a LEADING INTELLECTUAL on matters related to conservative principles on several issues of the day, from the early 60s onward. Then he got elected Governor of California. Twice. Then he lost more than one campaign for President.
This comparison of Carson to Reagan appears to come from nowhere other than wishful thinking.

The way the laws are currently structured, the only injured party can be the United States, itself -- and the only entity that can take a case to court for the US is the Attorney General. Clearly, there should be a wide expansion of those who have standing to challenge such lawlessness....as well as a sizeable extension of the Statute of Limitations.
Making off with $3B of unappropriated funds should devolve down into full liability for anyone who initiated, prepared, had custody of, or cashed the checks, and the Statute of Limitations should be at least 25 years.

Reagan was able to elect a GOP majority in the California Legislature for the only time since 1958.
Reagan won re-election easily to Governor.
He had two Presidential campaigns under his belt ('68 & '76), and had enough pull in '76 to get his choice selected as Veep candidate and to write the national security plank of the GOP platform.
He gave us the first GOP Senate majority a quarter of a century, and the only majority until '94.
He was well versed in business and was able to deliver a performance in both speeches and debates.
The man was accomplished.

The difference is that Britain in 1776 actually had rights and liberties that make the present U.S. look outright Jacobin.
The U.K. was the freeist nation in the world, and America revolted because they were only the second freeist.

And so I walk into the door and he was a....very different, much more normal guy.
In fact he was somewhat subdued, was willing to listen to what I had to say, and generally a much more tolerable person. I don't know what was said to him or what drugs he may be taking but it's working. All I could think was why couldn't this guy have walked in the door on Tuesday??
So anyway since then things have been much, much better. He can still be a bit intense and cocky at times but it's now down to 3 from an 8.5. Also giving him actual work to do has helped calm him down and focus him. In fact we've had some good conversations since then and he's acknowledged that he knows he can get obnoxious at times and to just tell him to chill the eff out and he won't take it personally.
So so far so good. I'm just glad the Ninja Kick Death Squad had a 48 hour cancellation/refund policy.

I think so. While the VP is elected along with the President, they can resign and be replaced by the President mid-term, which means they could, theoretically, fill another slot in government.
The confirmation hearings would be a pain, though. Even with a rubberstamp Congress, questions will be raised as to why no one else was nominated and the opposition party wouldn't be able to resist taking potshots at whatever President was in charge.

If there is a vacancy in the Vice-Presidency, the 25th Amendment specifies that the President nominate a new Veep, who takes office upon approval of a majority vote of the House and Senate.
This already occurred with Ford.
If there is a vacancy in both the Presidency and Vice-Presidency, then succession is according to law, which at present is:
Speaker of the House
President pro Tempore of the Senate
...and then cabinet officials according to historical prescience (Sec. of State, then Sec. of Treasury, &c.)

Hmmm... I can hear them, but the bass does seem rather unremarkable. I don't mean poor, but kind of too smooth, bottom endy and blends too much with the kick. You could be right. Dunno about the drums. Would have to listen again to pick up on it as I spent most of it listening to the bass.

Ford was nominated on 12 October 1973 and confirmed on 27 November, so yeah, over a month seems a bit long for the second-highest office in the land to be vacant. However, I don't think the Democrats could have been that prescient. Sure, they were probably angling for their own guy, but Nixon resigned 10 months after Agnew for covering up a scandal that involved tactics fairly common at the time. Can't remember where I saw it, but I remember reading that burglarizing your opponents' offices was considered tacky, but not unprecedented in that era. So, I doubt the Democrats could have foreseen how things were going to turn out 10 months down the road.

You know, that's a different band. I ran across their you tube stuff earlier today. I don't know if the dude I'm dealing with somehow got that name or what. At this point I don't even know if he knows of that other band. I do know its an actual drummer on the track he gave me. He has real musicians, but some aren't permanent because of other bands they are in. He's looking to put together a tour lineup and get some permanent members.

Thanks! The only thing worrying me is the guitar player that did that guest lead. He is a jazz/fusion influenced player, and I'm more neo-classical like yngwie when it comes to the speed and horsepower. This guy seems totally hell bent on keeping with the flavor of that guest player. I can learn it, but I won't "feel" it the way I would need to write more of it in the future. It could all blow up in my face. If he gives me a track to play over as part of the audition its not going to have the feel of that guest player.

This is part of the problem. We naively keep pretending that we're living under an administration that gives a shit about questions or potshots. The "opposition party" is Cruz. Boehner seems to have found something of a spine after the Cromnibus fiasco, but the Senate under McConnell has been a disaster. Obama is blatantly ignoring court orders and issuing clearly unconstitutional if not illegal executive orders, and his FCC took over the internet with barely a shrug. We pound and holler and scream but to no avail.

It could be argued that songs I was a part of in another band are way more known at the moment, where this dude seems to be just launching the ship. On the other hand I think the shows could be bigger than what I have done before, so that's a step up.

I'd tend to advise working on the audition tracks in that style, give him what he wants to hear and wait for an offer. Then after you get the nod, diplomatically inform that it's not your natural technique and that you'll do your best, but don't expect exactly the same all the time. Don't say shit before the offer. Be honest after the job is given and see how it goes from there. Since it's not a real big opportunity, just let them know after you've got the nod and see how it goes from there. Important question, what's this guys history with live gigs? Is he anywhere near as experienced as you? Is this his first band? Because if he isn't that experienced, that gives you more leverage in the "sorting it out" thing.

Well he does have some really good people around him. Its a huge opportunity at face value. He seems to have walked a lot of the same paths I have. He has others besides me to consider. The one thing I have going for me is a huge background in European style metal, where a vast majority of dudes in the states hang in a different sub genre. Its a 50-50 shot.

Every time somebody proposes defunding the NEA, the usual suspects trot out the socially acceptable things that they fund and convince the Low Information folks that the Neanderthals are at it again.
A smarter strategy would be to separate the NEA into the National Endowment for Symphony Orchestras and the National Endowment for Transgressive Art, Insulting Traditional Values and Promotion of Homosexuality. Then funding allocations could be argued in Congress.
