Palate cleanser-Feel good story of the day [Weirddave]

So it seems that an autistic boy in Florida was about to turn six. His parents planned a birthday party for him and invited all of his classmates, but all of them declined to come (aside - WTF? I'm the parent of a kid just a few years older, and I've always considered such things almost obligatory. No, they're technically not, but it's part and parcel of being a member of a community, y'know?). The little boy was crushed.

Best birthday ever

Though no one RSVP'd, Buratti and her husband John Buratti were 'still holding on to the hope that some of them would show up' to the party for her son, who has epilepsy and a mild form of autism.
'From the minute he woke up that day he wanted to know how many minutes until his friends came,' Buratti, 25, said, adding that his eyes filled with tears when he learned no one was coming.

In frustration, his mom posted a rant on a local Facebook group. Members of the community saw this, and responded. "Hey, can I bring my kids?". The local police department showed up, as did the fire department, complete with fire trucks. The police chopper did a flyby of the party (and even this crusty old ficon won't say boo about the public funds that surely were needed to pay for things like fuel).

In short, a bunch of people in Osceola, Fl. acted like most of us expect other Americans to act. Not all people are good, many are bad, more are indifferent and some are downright evil (the story linked is from the Daily Mail, a good place to find stories about downright evil people), but I think most people are fundamentally good. It's nice to see news stories reminding us of this.

It's not "newsworthy" when someone acts kindly because it happens so often. It is "newsworthy" when someone behaves badly because it's outside of the norm.

We lived next door to some downright evil people. Constant visits from the cops, SPCA, slandered left and right and in the schools, you name it. My wife got a bleeding ulcer from the stress and she almost bled to death (the emergency doctor told me to call the priest.)

It is my only experience with hate. A hatred that burns so bad it consumes every minute of every day. That's why I beleve that most people today don't ever really personally exprience true hate. That word is thrown about way too much. How can you hate someone you don't even know?

49 It is often very difficult for children with autism and it doesn't help that other kids often consider them weird and don't want to have anything to do with them.Long before my son was diagnosed as being on the spectrum I had a Haloween party for him and invited some kids from his class. Nobody RSVP 'd and if kids from the church hadn't shown up (3 of them) nobody would have been there. Their loss. We had the greates t decorated house and the coolest games and the best Halloween refreshments. :^)

While there are certainly no hard and fast rules about this, a point that people often don't want to touch on when discussing why kids are dicks is that it's often because they were raised by parents who were dicks.

While I'd love to say it, I do not believe people are fundamentally good. They can be--but I don't see how you can look at the barbarism that was commonplace throughout history and not conclude Hobbes was right about the how people act in a state of nature.

112 Speaking for myself, we've never had a school party for my autistic son. He's happier if we go and do something that he enjoys, since he's not that interactive with his peers.

If we'd sent invitations to the mainstream class he's in part-time, I'm not sure how many kids would come.

His special ed home class would probably have quite a few show up.

117 Fenelon, JoeF - it can be very difficult to deal with autistic kids. We have a niece who is moderately autistic. In general, we have found it is better to have adults around at times like birthday parties. One thing about this little girl - she hates loud noises and other kinds of over-stimulation. And adults are quieter than kids. She also doesn't like being touched. Women tend to do that more than men. So she likes to sit quietly with the guys. It's been an education for me, coming from a rambunctious crowd in my own childhood. So maybe it worked out for the best in this case, too.

132 My wife teaches in a private school. A couple years back she had a boy who kicked her. Every single day. She had bruises on top of bruises. I asked her to complain to the Principal. She did. Nothing happened.

An entire year a child abused her. If I had given her just one of the hundreds of bruises she sustained I would be in jail.

So that's another reason I read this with some degree of skepticism. Not a criticism of WeirdDave.

What I have come to realize is that the human capacity for self-deception and rationalization of their own shitty behavior is limitless. The concentration camp guards and ISIS murderers weren't and aren't mentally ill. They've managed to convince themselves that they are doing good. That's why those ideologies have such appeal - because they give people excuses to behave like barbarians.

Tom Sowell pointed out that civilization is a very thin crust covering primitive impulses - and that leftists are continually picking away at that crust.

They all don't have melt downs and don't kick their teachers. Mine has only diagnosed as being on their spectrum since April of last year. He has never hurt anyone, but kids didn't come to his party because he keeps to himself and its hard for him to socialize socialize, i suppose, not because he is a monster.

I'm no fan of O'Reilly, but the guy from CBS was a reporter who spent his time in Argentina in his hotel room. O'Reilly invited him to be on his show, and he declined. Instead he ran to CNN. O'Reilly is going to show his actual footage, where one of his photographers was knocked unconscious. O'Reilly's reporting was the lead story on CBS.

Let me elaborate, since a debate has developed. I believe that most people who are products of <b>MY</b> culture - traditional American culture - are fundamentally good. It's a culture designed to foster what is best in humanity.And that is why I'm a conservative, because I wish to CONSERVE it.Those of you, and I number myself amongst you at times, saying that you've "become more cynical" or have "lost your faith in humanity" are simply displaying symptoms of a century long Progressive attack on every thing that's right and good about America. If traditional American culture and values are destroyed, then what replaces them may very well not produce a society where these stories are the norm, but rather are aberrations.
In that hypothetical future society most people may very well not be "good", although I tend to think it'll be because they've never been taught how to be, and are thus more likely to fall into the "indifferent" camp.

Second, every parent seems to believe their child is perfect. When that same child hides under the desk then bolts for the door distrupting the class and bringing the lesson to halt, every child in the class suffers.It may be worse than that. The child may punish the teacher. I know of this, firsthand. The child may need a 'wrap around' aide -- an expensive proposition for the school or the local taxpayers.

Too many parents see some sort of evil intent when it comes to their child. I've been on the receiving side of the equation -- both paid higher taxes for the wrap around aide and had a wife who suffered the abuse of an out of control child.

Every story. Two sides.

This I would agree with. Traditional American culture values being decent and neighborly and honest, being a good citizen, etc. The leftist war on traditional family and communities has undermined those values.

163 And JFTR, my son was never in special ed classes until now-his freshmen year when they have an aide in one class who will help if they have questions. He has never been reported to the principal-never been removed from a class. never been cited for any violence or disruptions. He tends to blend into the woodwork. He has however, been bullied by other kids because he is is different-so yes, there are always different sides to a story.

I am just glad that the firefighters and policeman came to a make a special day for kid.

165 The reason why it (AA) is referred to as a 'spectrum' is that it is a broad continium -- not some narrow band. Some children have special needs way outside of the traditional classroom. Those needs may require one on one intervention. Costly to the school if enacted, costly to tjhe other students if ignored.

I have been there. Every day.Year after year after year.

It is not some minor issue that insensitive and lazy administrators wish to shove under the rug. They attempt to find compromise -- and the classic definition of compromise is when everyone is unhappy.

I was the unhappy spouse who had a wife being abused by a six year old.

That's truly awful, but it's pretty harsh to go after another poster's kid because his Dad said something you didn't like. Especially since you know it's a spectrum disorder and its expression varies widely.

Regarding the story kids can be pretty cruel but at least in my experience wouldn't turn down a party at that age. Parents on the other hand...

Uh, she hasn't hidden her kid has epilepsy And is a little bit autistic.

You don't send epileptic kids to "different schools". A child with epilepsy has a hard enough life, and the parents have lots of doctors bills and probably can't afford private school. Perhaps you'd like this child to be hidden away, so as not to inconvenient your kids, but screw you. He's not out of control. He has epilepsy and that scares people. So they acted like asses. Kinda like you.

170 Um, same thing happened to my daughter in 1st grade. We had only ONE kid RSVP. No one showed. She was not autistic. Just a regular kid. Thank goodness a friend of mine showed up with her daugher who was slightly older than mine (her kid didn't know my kid as we lived about 2 hours apart - so pretty much a total stranger to my kid).

No one did anything about it or cared. Just saying.

171 People who don't have kids don't understand how heartbreaking it is for parents to see their kids hurt by being excluded/ostracized/ignored by other kids.

Ray Bradbury had a story many years ago about a man who somehow managed to take the place of his small boy in elementary school so as to save that son the abuse common to that age. I didn't really understand the emotional logic behind that until I had a child. Now I do.
