Early Morning Thread 2/22/15: Is it the weekend yet? [krakatoa]

Sorry about yesterday. Last week was the site install your parents tell stories about at bedtime to keep you from taking a job in technology, and I swear I didn't realize yesterday was Saturday until about midway through the afternoon.

Thanks you for all the suggestions for Reading Market Terminal. Weather in Philly was horrible, and being able to walk across the street from the hotel for a great variety on better than average food was pretty much the lone bright spot of last week.

This week is Nashville and I don't think I need any suggestions, although you are all welcome to chime in on your favorites.

I never go there without hitting up Demos' at least a couple times, and last time I was there I found a great little sushi shop on the Arcade run by a really sweet Korean couple. Called Jimbo's Sushi & Korean Food, and far better than you would guess by the name alone.

4 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, February 22, 2015. On this day in 1879 in Utica, New York, Frank Woolworth opened the first of many of 5 and dime Woolworth stores. That used to be one of my favorite stores when I was a kid but alas, they are no more.

8 How about this BS article Fox is carrying from the WSJ. FL is preventing people from installing solar panels on their houses and FL is just right for solar power. All that is a crock of shit.

A broad political coalition, from liberal environmentalists to tea-party conservatives, has banded together in Florida to press for something that ironically is in short supply in the Sunshine State: solar power.

I notice they fail to name the "conservative" group who is on board with this. First off, solar power is not, and never has been, a cheaper source of electricity. It is almost double the cost of regular power. Second, Florida is not all that great for solar power. The highest power demand time during the day is in a Summer afternoon and what does FL have a lot of in the Summer in the afternoon? If you said thunderstorms you would be correct. You don't get much solar power during a thunder storm. And on top of that, no roof-top solar installation will carry the load when you are running a heat pump which is what most FL homes use.

What this is is a bunch of eco-turds banding together with some crony corrupt groups to sell a product that will not work all that well in FL.

14 WaPo BS headline: Gov. Scott Walker: I don't know whether Obama is a Christian

You have to read the article to see what he really said. In particular I liked this statement regarding the WaPo attempt at a "gotcha" question.

Walker said such questions from reporters are reflective of a broader problem in the nation's political-media culture, which he described as fixated on issues that are not relevant to most Americans.

No governor Walker, they are fixated on attacking Republicans at all costs.

57 I want to repost this from one of yesterday's threads, because it's kind of breathtaking. I don't know who posted it, because they used a pseudonym:

---

Friend -
It's tough out there for climate change deniers.
One by one, literally every argument and excuse they've been using for years is being proven false.
They're still grasping at myths and conspiracy theories, but deniers are on the run.
Let's keep them there - join the team that's calling out climate change deniers.

In reality, the debate on the basics is over.
Not only do 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate change is real and man-made, but new reports are showing climate and extreme weather impacts are affecting us right now.
Droughts, floods, wildfires, and storms are hitting communities from California to the East Coast, and we're already spending hundreds of billions on climate-related disaster relief - no one is denying that.
Instead, what you hear from climate change deniers are mostly excuses for not taking action. Some have hidden behind foreign countries, saying America can't or shouldn't lead on climate until someone else goes first.
Let's set aside for a minute that this isn't actually how we solve global problems. The fact is, President Obama is leading internationally through agreements with China and India to cut carbon pollution and expand the use of clean energy. (So there goes that denier talking point...)
Another thing you might hear from a denier is that we simply can't get serious about cutting carbon pollution without destroying the economy. That's just false. For example, the climate and public health benefits from President Obama's Clean Power Plan outweigh the costs by at least six times.
Maybe deniers doubt we have the will and ingenuity to take such a huge problem on. Well, the American people are proving them wrong: Since 2009, we've increased solar power ten-fold and tripled wind power. Hundreds of thousands of Americans work in clean energy today.
The arguments from deniers are getting more and more ludicrous.
We have the facts on our side - and we have to drive that message home. Because as long as deniers and polluters are blocking progress, we're not doing all we can to combat climate change.
Say you'll help take them to task - join the team that's calling out climate change deniers: http://my.barackobama.com/Expose-Climate-Change-Deniers

Vic: "Approximately 2800 of those rioting illegals will be moved to other federal prisons after trashing the one in TX yesterday. http://fxn.ws/1LsHmrt"

From the article (maybe this has been mentioned, I'm still back on Vic's comments):

"The inmates being held at the facility, which is in far South Texas more than 200 miles south of San Antonio, are described as 'low-level' offenders who are primarily immigrants in the U.S. illegally." My emphasis added.

Also they ostensibly rioted over medical care.

Seems t'me there's some bugs in this system.

84 Had been re-reading the Honor Harrington series but wifey got me the Basic Economics book by Thomas Sowell and am now working on it. It may be a little "too basic" though as I haven't seen anything that I didn't already know. There are some interesting little stories and examples in it.

86 Morning, all.
Slow waking up - maybe one too many bourbon&fingers lastnight.

Thanks, as usual, for the morning news, Vic.
It's 10x better than having a installer on the the front porch. And more reliable.

You need to get tickets in advance for anytime but Jan and Feb but if
you haven't been go to Independence Hall and see the Liberty Bell etc.
It's fascinating. Also if you like art the Philadelphia art museum is
very impressive.

Thanks, Felonspoke. Philadelphia is one big city I just do not know.

89 I sitting here hoping that it actually gets warm enough to melt some of this delightful global warming before if refreezes into an ice sheet worthy of the Ice Age. The slush shoveling consistency meets or exceeds the heart attack inducing requirements specified in Obamacare for the red pill.

Vic, thanks for that feelgood video. I know that stuff like this goes on in the real world, but you'd hardly know it from what the MSM news readers focus on!

90 I went to read Mark Steyn"s article referenced above. No one has a way with words like Steyn! At the end he sites Dalrymple commenting on communism feeding people outrageous lies and making them not just believe them, but recite them as well (think Stalin). It occurred to me that is exactly the case with every appointee in Obama's govt except for his immediate circle who write the lies. Idiots like Biden and Kerry recite the shit cause they started with him in milder days of milder lies and now it's too late. But imbeciles like that Admiral on FOX look foolish and bug eyed spouting lies they know are lies but are too afraid to back off of (sorry to end sentence with preposition). It ought to scare the shit out of us (oh wait, it does).

91 A NJ drive-in (the only one left) denied a diabetic kid entrance for bringing his own food. I'm on the owner's side on this. He had reopened this place a number of years ago after every drive-in was gone in NJ. Concessions are where the money is made, by the way. Not on the admission. Opinions?

Did he have concessions for diabetics? If so fine, if not he should have let the kid bring his own.

93 "Opinions?"

He's an asshole.

94 Did he have concessions for diabetics? If so fine, if not he should have let the kid bring his own.

Yes he does. He's a pediatrician. But, as usual, the parents want to make a federal case out of it. If I were him, sell the land to a big developer, take the money, point and laugh. The community and the surrounding area loses.

97 Since he had diabetic concessions the kid should have left his at home. The owner was in compliance with ADA which requires reasonable accommodations be made. And before evryone goes overboard, yes I HATE ADA because "reasonable" and "disability" has been redefined by the courts and shyster lawyers.

102 Uhh, no. I'm not a troll. Christ. Can't disagree with you? This goes back to my hatred of what's happened to bars as well, pertaining to the no smoking" situation. If you don't like the rules, you're free to go somewhere else. But, hey, I'll just bitch to the government and they'll sue the owner of the business into oblivion. Yep, that'll help the unemployment situation.
