16 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Here's a Lee Marvin story:

It was during the filming of 1967s Point Blank, and director John Boorman and Marvin had been out to dinner. No, scratch that - it had started as dinner, but now it was two in the morning and Marvin was hammered to the gills. The two had arrived in Marvin's car, and the star insisted on driving. Boorman snatched the keys away from Marvin, who snarled "Fuck you," and reared back, wielding an imaginary samurai sword. He was perfectly capable of driving, Marvin insisted, and to prove his sobriety, he clambered to the top of the car and crouched on the luggage rack.

What was Boorman to do? After thinking, he got behind the wheel and began driving, figuring the longer he went on, the more Marvin would see he was serious and would back down. But it didn't happen, and the next thing the director knew, he was on the Pacific Coast Highway, heading for Marvin's home, with the star still snarling on the rooftop.

It wasn't long before the car was pulled over. An officer got out of his cruiser and slowly approached them, surveying the scene. Finally, he came to the driver's door, looked at Boorman and asked his first question:

"Do you know you have Lee Marvin on your roof?"

Here's a little beefcake for the 'ettes: Marvin in boxing mode:

Hope you all have a wonderrful day.

Hey MP4. Here's a Marvin story. On the movie "Death Hunt" prima donna asshole and co-star Andrew Stevens kept taunting effeminate director Peter Hunt.

Stevens at one point, in a fey intonation kept asking Hunt "What's my motivation?!" That was it; Marvin had had enough. He walked over to Stevens, grabbed him by the collar and got right in his face "Your motivation is to say your fucking lines when he says action, got it?!"

After that, Stevens behaved.

27 Per Weaselzippers, State Department spokesmouth Marie Harf told Chris Matthews that the solution to ISIS is "lack of opportunity for jobs (sic)".

If your only tool is a hammer then every problem looks like a nail.

And if your only tool is a bloated, ineffective, bureaucratic-laden "jobs program" then every problem looks like unemployment.

FWIW I once worked a job with an ex-Brit soldier who'd been in Malaya in the 50's, and also was privileged to witness the Mau Mau up close and personal. A trifle one-sided, his observations were, but he had some tales to tell.

He said "our problems here" arose from the fact that the entire Government of England had fewer members than that of North Carolina. At least he didn't blame that on the Unwritten Constitution.

It's more than 4", you have people commuting to work from areas which were hit much worse, towns in this area lack the amount of snow removal equipment that places like Boston, Chicago and Buffalo have, and no one in the DC area with Maryland plates knows how to drive.

So yeah, the federal government is closed.

Having said that, I laugh every time it happens because I'm from New England and I remember a grand total of 20 snow days in 12 years of elementary and high school combined.

What if they gave up restraint for Lent?

85 And that health care system was damned good before 1965.

------------

Was born in 1958. Parents put the doctor's bill for my delivery in the baby book. $24.00. Dad wrote a check. Got a receipt stamped "paid in full." They didn't keep the hospital bill so maybe that was $58,000 for two days or something. But the doc got twenty four bucks.

87 "Why did it have to be Weirding Modules?"

Special effects. You can't have a movie without explosions. The Weirding Way doesn't have explosions, so you have to have modules that blow things up.

Explosions generated by sounds because of The Voice. That Laurentis guy really screwed that story up.

92 But, what does the blurred-out sign at the beginning of Fearless Vampire Killers say, anyway?

I hate-hate-hate 60's H'wood "camp," like any straightforward provincial rube, because it makes it so hard to try to figure what anyone seriously believed, and you're laughing right now aren't you. No, really. I was in Cali several times in that era, and found most people to be, well, in deadly earnest. Hollywood totally failed to document, just to take an example, the presumed seriousness of new music of that time ("to include" early prog rock and so on) because they were busy making fey sidelong jokes, making fun of everybody. Like bullshit written in lightning.

I've read several old essays that blamed the post-fin-de-siecle feyghey tralala of XX Cent Europe on one Stefan Zweig, whose campy romps are now being applauded by all as "Grand Budapest Hotel."

They've cancelled classes, which would be an automatic postponement of all activities in a public school, but are still holding off on any decision on after-school activities. It's the playoffs, and the second round starts Thursday in Asheville regardless, so I think they're gonna try to play if at all possible. And even when he went all liberal-whiny, which was a lot, he sounded exactly like our current liberal whiners, except more original.

He goes on at some length about nomads and nomad wannabes looking down on "Town Arabs" who do degrading things like taking jobs. The idea of the current admin advocating a War on Poverty in the richest quarter of the planet tells me that they are Said Arabists, thrashing all over with no depth, and have never read Gertrude Bell, Lawrence, Burton, or Woolley. I still kinda think the State Dept and Admin is cool with a Caliphate under the "Which Apache?" theory. The Left was batting that lame one around back in 2004 or so, since they figured a Caliphate would have enough authority to tell the rest of Islam to cool it down.

If thats the undercurrent of their decision making, all they're trying to do is limit their brutality to local stuff, allow the Caliphate to form and possibly encourage the fight between them and Iran for supremacy [and if Israel bites it in the process, well, they figure its "one less thing"].

That is indeed a price from ten years ago. Cheap ribeyes often have a lot of "integumentary tissue" but if grilled right or slow-cooked that stuff dissolves.

I note with approval that you elected to have the butcher do the slicing.
