Early Morning Thread 2/15/15: Just one meal - Philadelphia. [krakatoa]

Flying to Philly today. Will be staying downtown. From the looks of the restaurants in the area, it appears that I'll be next to Philly's Chinatown.

What's the best place to eat without breaking the bank?

3 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, February 15, 2015. On this day in 1933 Giuseppe Zangara, an Italian communist, attempted to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, but instead shot 5 other people including Chicago mayor Anton J. Cermak, who died of his wounds on March 6, 1933. He was executed March 20, 1933. They didn't waste time in those days.

8 This article at Fox discusses Lady Boy Graham's run for president as a "ringer" in the 2016 race. I said that right off the bat. He is there to try and quell in conservative like Cruz who will do poorly in Iowa and NH. If they lose SC too that will most likely knock them out of the race.

9 Austin Democrats have taken their BS case against Perry to the press now.

A special prosecutor says then Texas Gov. Rick Perry tried to force a Democratic district attorney to resign because he didn't approve of the "historical and current management decisions" of the public corruption unit she ran, according to a Friday court filing

No you assholes, he was trying to get her to resign like any other politician would have been forced to after being popped for DUI. And besides that, if "corruption" was being prosecuted in Austin it should start with her office as well as a lot of the other parts of the city government.

10 I remarked on this yesterday afternoon. It is a BS article from Fox talking about gun control pukes now going local for their fight with domestic violence cases. They push one bill here supposedly in SC. I was unable to locate this bill and I can say that no gun control bill in SC has a chance in hell of passing. In fact, over the past few years several bills have passed that virtually eliminate State gun laws in SC. And BTW, there is already a federal law that was added by the Lautenburg asshole amendment that takes away your second amendment rights if you get in a domestic violence situation. It was struck down once by the courts but added back again later by Democrats and RINOs in the North.

94 I second, third and fourth Reading Terminal Market. Just a block or two from Chinatown, it has everything and is not expensive. If you want Chinese, our favorite is Imperial Inn for dim sum (10th Street, b/t Arch and Race). Tequila's is wonderful (15th and Locust) - more coastal Mexican, so lots of seafood options. They have a great tequila-garlic sauce they put on their fish. Kind of pricey, though. A little further away (up in our hood, NoLibs): Honey's Sit And Eat for breakfast or lunch - 4th and Brown St. - "Southern/Jewish Cuisine" - the lines are around the corner on weekends, but during the week it's better. Also, Bar Ferdinand, very nice tapas place. We've always had great meals there and not that expensive. One thing we really like about Philly is the number of BYOBs - there are several really good ones (Modo Mio, Farm Fisherman, Bibou, etc) and you cut the price by bringing your own. Have fun and bundle up!

101 I know Chris Kyle was trying to help a fellow vet at the request of the killer's mom but the testimony shows that Kyle and Littleton really made some bad decisions which is very surprising considering they had made significant life and death decisions during their tours.

Both acknowledged the guy was nuts and Littleton specifically asked Kyle to 'watch his six'. When you have that scenario you definitely do not proceed to a gun range and arm the nut case. I think political correctness and the big heart of Kyle clouded their decision making.

A father and son team from Australia bought a very used, 43 foot sailboat here for about $10K a few weeks ago and spend another couple weeks "getting it ready" for a double handed trip back to Australia. The son is probably in his mid-30s and the father pushing 60. The dad has no sailing experience at all.

Despite numerous people telling them they were nuts they set sail yesterday from RI, in the midst of this enormous offshore low with gail force winds gusting to close to hurricane strength and driving snow. The Coasties even boarded them and tried to get them to reconsider but they went anyway.

154 The brisket at Percy Street Barbecue (Ninth and South streets) is oneof my favorite meals. Served with onion jam and Texas Toast, but I'd add a side of greens to that. They think they're serving a theme with a wide selection of canned beers, but it really feels lazy and disreputable.

Avoid at all costs Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street. Simply awful kraut food. The dominant decoration is a ten-foot-tall lighted sign with the full text of the beer purity law, but unless you're a beer Nazi, it's a reminder of other Nazis. If you want good German, take a 20-minute jaunt out to the Hop Angel Brauhaus in Fox Chase. (Train leaves the station beneath Reading Terminal once an hour; the restauarant is right across the street from the end of the line.)

Parc, a French bistro on the east side of Rittenhouse Square is a bit pricey but big menu never fails. They're probably all exhausted after the V-Day rush yesterday. Way, way more charming when the doors are wide open and the tables take over the sidewalk, but, hey, come back in June.

They had spots all over the city and were better than Geno's or Pat's(?) in my opinion. Faster, less attitude, cheaper and better sandwiches. The two I specifically remember were down in South Philly across from the stadium and out at the 60th st station on the Market Street line (I don't remember if that was the actual name of the station but that was it's general location). Also I disagree - Cheese Whiz is the best way to get a Cheesesteak.

160 The restaurants change so frequently in Chinatown that I can't keep up. Look on the usual websites for up-to-date recommendations. If you are near Chinatown you will also be near the Reading Terminal Market. Cool place to visit: Pick up an amazing, unique Italian hoagie at Salumeria---make sure to ask for the house dressing; I like it with light onion, roasted peppers, and chopped artichoke hearts but YMMV. DiNics does make a great pork sandwich; they are crowded now that they got famous but they haven't changed their quality. The Amish soft pretzels at Millers are excellent but I'm not wowed by the various Amish booth's food in general. Bassett's ice cream is well worth it if you are in the mood, and the Mexican place does good burritos.

Vic -- something you could consider is a special kinda vent for your
clothes dryer. During winter months you vent to inside. Not only throws
those btu inside but adds a ton of humidity to home.

Posted by: se pa moron

Simple, a cardboard box, a through wall dryer vent flange, a piece of window screen, duct tape and about ten minutes of your time and you can have one.

I made one because it was a way to save money that was cost effective and saved money while heating the house, not that we need more humidity here but it beats heating the outdoors. Total cost was the flange I got at Home Depot for less than five bucks, everything else was from around the house.

Some assembly required, use your own imagination and save yourself a lot of cash that otherwise would vent outside.

169 Pete's Famous Pizza is a good spot, not far from Eastern State Penitentiary which was a major change in how prisons were run. Neighborhood isn't great but it's not terrible either.

If you want to break the bank, Morimoto's is outstanding.

170 Yeah, go to Jersey for your fine dining needs. You have your choice of Applebee's, Red Lobster, or Olive Garden!

171 You have to ask what to eat in Philly? Really? I know it isn't like the city is famous for any type of food or anything...

172 Geno's if you must have a cheesesteak (whiz, with, extra fried onions), but if you're really in the know, you'll get a roast pork with sharp provolone and raab from John's or Oregon Steaks or whatever stand it is in Reading Terminal Market.

And if you go to the Terminal, go upstairs to the trainshed, which was turned into a ballroom/event space. There are metal strips in the floor where the rails (Reading Company, trains to the suburbs) once were. The station was closed when a new tunnel through Center City connected the Reading and PRR systems.

True fact: this moron was the last passenger at Reading Terminal.

173 Olive Garden? Applebee's?
Why do you mention California owned chain restaurants?
Crap on Jersey, but we have more 4 star restaurants than Manhattan.
Half the price as well.
So go ahead, pay extra for a sleazy tattooed broad serving you mediocre food with an attitude.
Me? I gots choices. And none are surrounded by Philly cops who hate R's.
And the filth that attractd the D's to town.
