So I have bit of geek good news to share. So some of you know my wife is part of a tribal bellydance troupe. A few nights ago, she was showing a pic from her troupe's FB page and her instructor had a pic of the green skinned Orion slave girl from ST:TOS for some reason. I jokingly asked if they were going to do the Orion slave girl dance. She emailed her instructor and the next day she got a response saying what a great idea that was!
w00t!!!
The entire troupe is going to be Orion slave girls for this Halloween's hafla (dance party). This is geek heaven to me!!! I've been busy this morning tracking down the TOS episode and music, as well as costume pics for the wife.

I've heard excellent things about Kingsman from non-lefty people.

I have no desire to watch Kingsman. It doesn't actually look all that good to me. However- an action movie (as an action movie) has succeeded when two things happen: people die, and stuff blows up. If there can be hot, scantily attired females involved, so much the better.
It has failed (as an action movie) if it forces me to think, if it forces me to consider politics, if it breaks versimilitude.
If it does not force me to think (that is: the plot is fairly straight forward (not the same as linear)), and it does not force me to think of politics (that is: doesn't get up in my face about 'Gun owners bad!' or whatever), and it does not break versimilitude (it's internally consistent-ish), then I'm probably happy enough with the movie.
Prime example (successful): the Independence Day movie. Leftist drivel? Yeah, if you let yourself think about it. But it doesn't *make* you think about it. And it has great lines like "I couldda been at a barbeque!" and "You really think you can do all the bullshit you just said?"
Prime example (unsuccessful): Minority Report. Not exactly leftist drivel, but the plot was so complex I spent more time trying to figure out WTF was going on than watching fight-scenes. (Yes, I know Minority Report is not actually an action movie, but the promos sold it as one- another FAIL).

One of the big fights in the Church (Catholics as well as Orthodox and Protestants) was over how *exactly* the Lord's Supper works. The two opposing theories were consubstantiation and transubstantiation. Transubstantiation (what the Catholics decided, I think (not a Catholic)) says that the bread and the cup turn into Jesus' literal flesh and blood as you take them. Consubstantiation says that Jesus' flesh and blood (or their spiritual equivalents- I'm CoC, we don't really care too much one way or the other) exists along side (con-) the bread and the cup.
Except for theologians (or theological geeks, like me) most people don't even know the two concepts exist, let alone which is which, why the Church even asked the question, etc.

I won't go to see the upcoming JJ Trek flick, the first one was bad enough, the second one had me furious and tremendously disappointed. -_- After seeing the blonde chick in the trailers along with the villain running around doing seemingly impossible physical feats, along with the movie posters depicting the utter destruction of Starfleet HQ... I was convinced that the flick was going to be a reboot of the pilot of the first Star Trek series, that the villain was Gary Mitchell, the blonde science officer was Elizabeth Dehner, and that this was going to freakin' ROCK.
Instead we got a really crappy Khan redux, nowhere near the quality of Wrath of Khan. No more JJ Trek. Ever.

I like JJ Trek. I like Original Trek, too.
I know a lot of people only like one or the other. But, I like both equally, and I understand the concept of alternate timeline, so I like and appreciate how they are different.
In one universe, Kirk is a charismatic but competent leader who did the right thing much more than he did the wrong thing. In the other, he is a kid who grew up without a father and with a chip on his shoulder. I can appreciate them both.
I like that Spock is a little more human in the reboot. And, Leonard Nimoy himself said that had ST not been cancelled after 3 seasons, they were probably going to flesh out a lot of the human elements of Spock. And, he was going to be much closer to the reboot Spock. But, I like the Nimoy deadpan from TOS.

Considering that it just came out today, no, I have not seen it yet. But here is my question. Why are you letting one review from the rocket surgeons at The Daily Beast make up your mind for you? Same thing goes with the Free Beacon review as well. Read both sides and then decide for yourself. Enjoy, deeply, Colin Firth in bespoke tailoring shooting things.
The Right complains, justifiably, about how the Left controls pop culture. Far too many people on the Right then turn around and refuse to go see anything or read anything or listen to anything if that work doesn't ticky all the proper right wing ticky boxes. I find that infuriating.

Ordinarily, I would agree with you. But Hollywood can't seem to stop politicizing all the things and its annoying to go to a fun cheeseball spy movie and then find it was all about the evil americans or corporations. (I'm looking at you, the last bourne movie.)
But it's not even about the political anymore, it's that the political sucks the fun out of it because it is so damned predictable. I don't usually read reviews, I just go but a review was linked and it's friday before a long weekend and I forget which daily is what so hell, I took the 'watch a bunch of evil christians' part as legit. Because you know what? I've seen that scene. A bazillion times. So nobody get the benefit of the doubt from me.

The first season of "Spartacus" is awesome.
The small setting, indignities, and increasing rage of the protagonists works very well.
Plus, the guy playing the Roman master is just a perfect clueless villain.
But following seasons get increasingly meh.
The big format and high school clique style plotting kinda ruin things.
