The whole dietary wisdom is falling apart. Notice back in that old article they mention that circulating cholesterol is mostly endogenous, produced in the body, not from eating. It's about 80%, IIRC. That's why they need statins, which lowers endogenous production. Which causes a host of other little problems.
Look up Ancel Keys, the zealot who got us started on the fat is bad path. It was never science. It was "science", politics and special interests. The true culprit is carbs, well fast carbs, the carbs that are quickly absorded into glucose, spiking insulin and endogenous fat production from that absorbed glucose. When they took out the fat from all the crap in the supermarket, they replaced it with carbs. Had to replace it with something. You can see the obsesity rates, diabetes, and all the "metabolic disorder" crap track nicely with the low-fat recommendations which hit back in the late 70s. This is the biggest medical fail in history, really. Posted by: publius(NotBreitbartPublius) at February 10, 2015 09:21 PM (dvuhZ) 66

"i could feel it coming down my dick... and then it STOPPED!" being a jarhead, and a friend of mine, he did the only sensible thing he could think of: he reached in with a pair of tweezers and pulled it the rest of the way out. today, he wears it as a pendant, suspended in a cube of acrylic. You'll be amazed at how fast the blubber will come off if you stop the sugar/fast carbs. Me, my biggest demon is sweet iced tea, plus baked potatoes. When I can get off that, and stay off, which is as hard as qutting smoking, the blubber just starts to slowly melt away.
There's no need to go overboard. "Slow carbs" as found in many vegetables aren't that bad. They don't spike your glucose. Starch/sugar, though, cut that out. A little treat now and then once the lard is gone off your gut, but don't relapse. 84: Ancel Keys became a "Top Man", as in "Top Men are working on it" in nutrition. Which was funny, since his Ph.D was in oceanography. He did the original studies on heart disease and fat, and of course cherry picked his data to make the correlation look much, much better than the whole data set supported. Also, he left interesting stuff like, well slight correlation with fat intake for heart disease, but overall mortality was negatively correlated with fat intake.
So you might be more likely to die of heart disease if you ate more fat, but your overall chances of death were lower. Funny thing, statistics and confounding variables and correlation vs causation. At the time, some other eminences in the field wrote criticisms of his studies, some destroying his arguments, but he won out eventually. He still has defenders to this day. No, he made up his mind that eating fat caused heart disease and set out to prove it, all evidence to the contrary, well devasting evidence at least, being ignored. Hey, kids! Sorry to be so mia lately, but my life is currently in "if it can go wrong, it will" mode. However, I have a prayer request and it's kinda urgent. Just found out that the very reasonably priced apt right next door to my dad (who has recently been diagnosed with terminal and icky cancer) has unexpectedly become vacant. I need that apartment. Prayers would be hugely appreciated. This needs to happen fast. TIA and XOXO.

Carol...I hope you've been warned enough about the scorching summers we get down here.
I mean flaming-cats-raining-down-from-the-skies type of scorching weather. I'm in Oklahoma and we get it bad sometimes...and we're north of poor Texas, which gets even hotter temps. So, whatever you will save on heating bills in the winter, you will probably have to spend in the summer to survive the heat. And then...there are the tornados. Which, to be fair, can hit almost anywhere these days, but we get a lot of them in TX and OK. I'm thrilled for you to be escaping Liberal-Land. But I hope that you'll be fully prepared for the type of heat that you will encounter down here. On the bright side, you also get day after day of blue sky weather, mild winters and the ability to buy a gun with very little hassle. Posted by: wheatie at February 10, 2015 09:48 PM (hX3bN) 208

They sell a few other varieties, too; I"ve gotten a few Austins form them. I think it'd be worth a stop for the advice, if you're near there at all. Your rose growing in Texas will be a lot different. It isn't the soil, it's the heat. Have you thought about WA or Oregon at all? Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at February 10, 2015 09:48 PM (2HvRz) 209

Horde, you're gonna HATE me for this one.
Signed up that big, fat, 63 square area roofing contract today. Over contraband cigars and Maker's Mark. Crews will install the roof over Thursday and Friday. The customer, being an educated man, figured quite rightly, that I'd cut in a hell of a deal on the roof, and figured I deserved a little more for my not inconsiderable efforts. So, out he comes with a Marlin 1982 model, manufactured in 1898. Lever action, .22 LR, precursor to the vaunted Model 39. Right at the low end of "NRA-GOOD" condition, shootable and entirely intact and functional. Very mild pitting, the bluing is half-browned out, the wood is 95% or so, and it's never been touched insofar as refinishing (which lowers values immensely). Gives it to me as a gift, won't take no for an answer. It's laying across the love-seat, opposite my recliner in the living room. It's a wonderful, beautiful rifle. A thing of beauty. haha, just a little bit of luck, Mero! It's cheaper than where I live
now in LA (crime-ridden shithole, only $1450/mo). I just need to swoop on it. Unfortunately, I had to file for unemployment a couple of weeks ago, but I doubt that will have hit my credit report yet. The dadster is in SD and I'm in LA. Being next door to him for whatever time he has left would solve many, many problems and also take the heat off my sis, who is freaking (and in Pasadena). Hell, if they needed me to, I could pay a year up front, no problem. Just luck now, which has been in really short supply for me the last couple of months (had my identity stolen, too, and those are just the highlights, it's fuckin' ridiculous). A personal story re the cholesterol and fat science.
A few weeks ago, after praying about guidance re how to lose weight and become healthy again, I awoke with perfect clarity. I threw out all the diet food. Restocked with real butter and cheese. I started eating meat or seafood with every meal. I still eat pasta and bread, but find that I can't eat much because the meat is so filling. When I crave something really bad, like DQ, I tell myself that if I still want it tomorrow, or the next day, that I'll get it then. I've dropped about 1.5 pounds per week since making these very easy-to-live-with changes to my diet. I'm simply blown away by how easy it is. Guy who plays Lews Therin wasn't quite as good, but he dies quickly anyway. That was probably the most disappointing part though, it end without seeing the creation of Dragonmount. Regarding health advice:
Back in the 90s, my husband and I read The Protein Power Plan by the Drs. Eades. The doctors gave a summary of what the research really revealed, and said that fat was fine, carbs needed to be cut back, cholesterol was not a concern if your carb consumption was under control, and sufficient vitamin D was crucial. It all sounded heretical, but they made a good case for their guidelines. It has been amazing to watch each of their crazy ideas get vindicated. Just watched Dracula Untold, and it skeeved me out more than anything. Lots of shitty CGI, and the movie made you pity him more than fear him.
First, where was the hot witch? I remember hearing about that and catching glimpses in the trailer. I guess she was cut from the final film. Maybe they wanted to focus more on the "love story", but what kind of wife damns your soul to eternal hell when she didn't catch you cheating? The guy did everything right to save his kingdom. That was a weakness in the storyline. First, he wants the power to defeat his enemies. He has stared evil in the face and knows what happens if he feeds within three days. But he knows his people will turn on him when they see what he's become. He then turns them all into monsters and kills them anyway. So, what was the point? Are we rooting for a serial killer or a pussy-whipped sap? I thought it was ok, but I guffawed at the end when they seriously thought there was a sequel in the making. Maybe they'll have more scenes with Charles Dance. Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at February 10, 2015 11:00 PM (Y92Nd) 488

488 Just watched Dracula Untold, and it skeeved me out more than anything.
Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at February 10, 2015 11:00 PM (Y92Nd) That movie was the epitome of soulless corporate, assembly line crap. If they cared, they could have made a good movie combining the real Vlad Tepes with the Dracula legend, but they gave zero fucks. That was made on the cheap, apparently during a week off in filming for the Game of Thrones cast in N. Ireland. Posted by: gewa76 at February 10, 2015 11:25 PM (S9rS1) 612

What's wrong with hunting bear?
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at February 10 Depends on where the bear is from. Their meat is very fatty, and fat concentrates the flavors and contaminants of whatever else the bear is eating. Close to a city or town, that can include garbage and associated heavy metals contamination from cans, etc. Also, bear meat is very prone to carry parasites, including trichinella nativa, a parasite that causes trichinosis and which cannot be killed by freezing. So it can only be safely served well done, and the best way to do that is by stewing or braising. Steaks and burgers will either be too well done, or a form of culinary Russian roulette. Other than that, yum. Posted by: CQD at February 10, 2015 11:40 PM (2dzsA) 674

Are you recommending Oklahoma instead? Oh, not really, Carol...we have a State Income Tax here, and I read where that was a 'draw' for you, the fact that Texas doesn't have it. Just mentioned OK because I know what the scorching heat is like in TX, because we get it almost as bad here. I'm not talking about a 'heat wave' either. It gets hot in May and lasts till September. Sometimes we luck out, and don't get two months of 100-degree temps in July-August. But then...sometimes we get 90 days straight, of temps 100 degrees or over. Weird thing is Colbert taking over Letterman. So Colbert's a left-wing asshole.
Usually the idea is you get a guy with broad appeal that everybody can like. Usually they are secretly left-wing assholes, but they keep that hidden for the early years to build up viewers. Letterman was a left-wing crank, but until he got old he mostly hid it. Colbert starts as a left-wing crank who got the job by shitting on half the country every night for a decade. The problem is they've all dropped the mask and basically become the insufferable douche at the party who makes everything political. I saw Stewart do a gig in the 90s. He was pretty fun back then, and more of just a frat boy riffing on current events. Same with Will Ferrell, Seth Rogen, et al. Whether you liked or hated their comedy, at least they were sticking to dick jokes and the like. Now all of them have to lecture us little people on the evils of the GOP. I started to watch Anchorman 2 on Netflix, knowing it would suck hard. Still, it wasn't just unfunny. It was contemptible. 20 minutes in and it became a screed against sexist, racist white men. Written and produced by white men, of course.

eleven: when Craig Ferguson signed his final contract with CBS for The Late Late Show, he was promised: he'd get The Late Show when Letterman retires, or... CBS would have to pay him **$8 million.**
Well, apparently CBS decided they were so against the idea of someone who doesn't get his kicks pissing all over half the audience, that they chose to give it to Colbert anyway... and then went ahead and paid the $8 mil to Ferguson. Literally a *week* later, Ferguson said he was walking away from The Late Late Show. Ferguson *swears* not getting Letterman's spot didn't bother him... but I personally find that hard to believe, especially given how quickly Craig announced he was quitting. I'm hoping, REALLY hoping, CBS comes to regret their decision to go with Colbert. It would truly be poetic justice. Kinda funny.
So Seth Rollins is a big WWE guy, one of the top bad guys right now. And one of the crop of new young stars in last few years. Anyway, last night right after Raw went live, somebody hacked his twitter/instagram accounts and posted a naked pic of a WWE diva, as they call their female wrestlers. Well, not a diva yet but a girl in their developmental system in Florida. (When you sign with WWE, you first go to Florida to train, sometimes for years, before being called up to Raw, Smackdown, etc. Most who sign never make it out of developmental, they train for a year or two then get cut.) Anyway, the naked chick Rollins clearly was banging did not please his fiance who, while Raw was still airing live, then went on her twitter and posted naked pics of Rollins. My bet is the fiance posted both. Probably found the pic of the mistress on his phone or something. She timed it nicely to fuck over his life as much as possible in retaliation. He only recently made it to right near the top of WWE, probably just started making really good money, poised for a long career after spending a decade killing himself on indie shows in high school gyms for 50 people at a time. Not clear how much this will hurt him. WWE has shortage of talent at the moment and he's very good at what he does. But, as you guys have already pointed out, that's exactly why it will never happen. Why build on something when you can tear it down and re-use the materials? Especially if you can feed your ego in the process. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at February 11, 2015 12:25 AM (5pg79) 769

He finds them eyeroll worthy. "Science has proves that homosexuality is normal" I really try to avoid these discussions with him, but I snapped back. "No Big, it bloody well isn't. 97% of the population identifies as straight. I'm not saying gay is bad. I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm not even saying that gay people aren't born gay. Being gay is perfectly natural. What it isn't is normal. Words have meanings. 3% of the population isn't the norm. Cerebral Palsy is natural. Cancer is natural. Being gay is natural. It's not the norm. Do you understand the point I'm making? As I said, words have meanings" "You're wrong dad. Just the other day I saw a study by Johns Hopkins that found 1/3 of all people are gay!" "No, you didn't" and I dropped him off. He didn't see any such a fucking study, because no such fucking study exists. He's known me since he was a kid. I don't argue except when I have the facts, if I don't, i say I dunno and then go find out. He KNOWS this, and every single time he's challenged me on facts, I'VE PROVEN HIM WRONG. He also KNOWS that I'm willing to listen and discuss any issue on the facts. And yet he goes and makes up a lie that's just....obvious. Why? He's 21, that's why. Shit. Launch Complex 13 was one of the four original Atlas launch pads. It saw service from 1958-1978. At first it was used for ICBM testing (Atlas was the first American ICBM), and in August 1958 Atlas 4B launched from there. It was the first full-range Atlas flight. Later the pad was adapted for Atlas-Agena, and all five Lunar Orbiters were launched from there in 1966-67. Those lunar mapping missions were a crucial precursor to Apollo, and the astronauts studied those photos to familiarize themselves with lunar landmarks. After that, the pad was used for launching military and NRO satellites.
It's been a derelict ruin since 1978, and now SpaceX plans to repurpose it as a landing pad. They already lease LC-40 from the Air Force and have been using that pad since 2010. Last year they signed a 20 year lease for LC-39A, one of the two most historic launch pads in the world (the other one is in Russia). Here is a short video showing what they intend to do with LC-39A and LC-13: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ca6x4QbpoM Posted by: rickl at February 11, 2015 01:51 AM (sdi6R) 809

Is everyone aware that the hostage killed by ISIS, Kayla Mueller, was an Israel-hating far-leftist who was a member of the ISM -- the anti-Semitic communist front group that send white volunteers to be martyrs for "the cause" to conflict zones in the Middle East? I thought everyone knew this, but just in the ;ast few hours I see that some people seem to be falling for the MSM spin that she was a "Christian" and that therefore we are to assume she was not a raving Arab fetishist? Anyway, read these links if you have ANY doubt: http://www.imemc.org/article/70519 http://www.haaretz.com/news/middle-east/.premium-1.641876 http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Articles/Article.aspx/16455 Here's a letter she herself wrote: "Oppression greets us from all angles. Oppression wails from the soldiers radio and floats through tear gas clouds in the air. Oppression explodes with every sound bomb and sinks deeper into the heart of the mother who has lost her son. But resistance is nestled in the cracks in the wall, resistance flows from the minaret 5 times a day and resistance sits quietly in jail knowing its time will come again. Resistance lives in the grieving mother's wails and resistance lives in the anger at the lies broadcasted across the globe. Though it is sometimes hard to see and even harder sometimes to harbor, resistance lives. Do not be fooled, resistance lives." And here's some commentary on her "career": " However, despite the sadness at her needless death, the myth that she was wonderful altruistic young woman should be exposed. This is another Rachel Corrie propaganda story in the making, and the western media is falling for it again, or embracing it on purpose. Kayla Mueller was a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) who spent at least two years working with that terrorist support group. She was involved in demonstrations against the Jews in Sheikh Jarrah (part of East Jerusalem) after a 20 year long court decision recognized the Jews' legal rights to homes they were chased from in earlier wars launched by the Arabs. She also participated in demonstrations to interfere with the IDF demolishing the homes of terrorists and suicide bombers after the courts okayed the demolitions. Just as with Rachel Corrie, the press tries to paint Kayla as a selfless volunteer helping poor Arab refugees. She may have helped injured Arabs in "refugee" camps, but she was working to support the goals of Palestinian irredentists and to interfere with the IDF on behalf of terrorist groups. As an ISM activist she was a tool for the worldwide jihad. A letter she wrote which appears on the ISM’s website describes the usual ISM claims of atrocities that never occurred, but were fabrications worthy of Pallywood. First, she lived and rioted with other ISM activists with an Arab family that refused to vacate a home they were squatting in after a legal case that took 20 years established it was stolen from the Jewish owners. She wrote propaganda letters for the ISM website" etc.etc. etc. Posted by: zombie at February 11, 2015 02:39 AM (K4YiS) 820

Her boyfriend was a "Syrian" whom was originally suspected of handing her over to ISIS, as he was an ISIS collaborator -- but later he supposedly "regretted" something andI forget the details but for some reason he was absolved of guilt in arrangement her "abduction." So she was "in bed" with the enemy, both figuratively and literally. If you read her writings, she's one of those chicks who falls hook line and sinker for "the Arab narrative" and obviously had a sexual fetish for Arab men. Personally, for me, I'm quite sure that she is yet anohter one of those leftists who intentionally arranged to be faux-kidmapped so they could then be later exchanged for a terrorist held by the West. And when then pretend kidnap victims (and there have been dozens of them since 2002) end up getting abused by their supposed collaborators posing as their captors, they're shocked and in disbelief. Did you not see the earlier news? No. There can be only one Patty Hearst, right or wrong. Posted by: Arbalest As of this moment, the narrative of her true politics sems still to be unknown to most everyone. But over the last hour I have "seeded" the story at some top sites so by tomorrow morning I suspect it will be better published. (When I'm too lazy, busy or distracted to make an actual blog post myself, I often will send a "tip" to connections at various leading conservative sites, usually with so much info and already mostly written, including the headline, that I make it easy for them, and the tip usually becomes a big story somewhere or other. I often end up influencing the news-stream this way when my pseudonym isn't attached at all.) Posted by: zombie at February 11, 2015 03:08 AM (K4YiS) 837

The main link to concentrate on is the one at this ISM-affiliated site, which really really exposes the raw reality of her political views without any filter: http://www.imemc.org/article/70519 This is the raw info, not a summary by the MSM or even by an analyst on our side. As of this moment, the narrative of her true politics seems still to be unknown to most everyone. She was a shield, so very few people are truly fooled. However, few care. But with enough publicity, "care" will be unimportant. The necessary result is that publicity changes The Narrative. Now a new inductee to The Palestinian Pantheon appears. All that's needed is a name ... we already have St. Pancake. Posted by: Arbalest at February 11, 2015 03:14 AM (FlRtG) 840

What was ground in reality was mutated and corrupted into something in conflict with reality, and as such will inevitably either fall outright, or mutate into something that is consistent enough to hobble along... for a while. The thing is, the roots of our civilization were organic and the ability to have both liberty and virtue was due to a rare confluence of historical events and trends that is impossible to implement directly. Most societies have don't have that, but are capable of existing. The chance of those rarefied conditions that led to America being recreated are almost nill. If we fall, what will come after the Leftist insanity will not, ney will never, be anything even close to that combination of liberty and virtue that made America possible to begin with. I couldn't see over snow mountains in my small city Friday at stop signs. There is no reason I have to go out today, unless I put boots on to bring recycle things out to bin. Local Boston news said they are moving & dumping snow in Boston but they aren't going to do anything on my street except wait for it to melt & from forecast 20s are all we can expect. "Local Boston news said they are moving & dumping snow in Boston"
Seems to be a lot of news coverage about the moral dilemma of dumping polluted show into Boston Harbor, or letting the sun melt it. I know that several years ago, when Baltimore got like five feet of snow, they brought in those huge snow dragons which could melt a dumptruck full of snow in about thirty seconds. And then let the melted snow run into the gutter. And the storm drain would dump into Baltimore harbor. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 11, 2015 06:14 AM (sHoya) 868

"Obama's right. Terrible things have been done in the name of Christianity. I have yet to meet a Christian who denies this."
We shouldn't concede the point that the Crusades were some awful terrible thing. The Crusades was united Christian Europe helping the Byzantine empire recover lands lost to the saracen empire back around 1000AD. There was contant pressure and war and thus multiple crusades. It was no more evil than the Allies in WWI or WWII trying to take back lands from invading Germans. This was a political thing not a religious thing per se, but done to help brothers in Christ and hence the papal involvement. Now it is true the Frankish knights ended up creating their own state based on their conquest of the Holy Land, instead of giving it tothe Byzantines, but then when we recaptured the Phillipines from Japan, we kept bases. No different. Critics will point out some atrocity, of which there were some, but they are endemic to war, and its akin to condeming the US as a war criminal because of Dresden and Hiroshima, without considering the context of Nazi/japanese aggression. For the Crusads, the context is that Byzantine was a fading empire and the Islamic caliphate an aggressive one. It was aggression from Islam that led to the Crusades, ie, the Crusades were a response to aggression. Posted by: Keep Calm Cruz On at February 11, 2015 12:19 PM (wT9UL) 877
Silly me: Bernard Lewis was quoted saying already what I meant to say on this:
"The Crusades could more accurately be described as a limited, belated and, in the last analysis, ineffectual response to the jihad - a failed attempt to recover by a Christian holy war what had been lost to a Muslim holy war," writes Bernard Lewis, the greatest living English-language historian of Islam Posted by: Keep Calm Cruz On at February 11, 2015 12:20 PM (wT9UL) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.105 seconds. |
