Guidelines warning people to avoid eating fatty foods such as butter and cheese should not have been introduced, new research has found. Dietary advice issued to tens of millions warned that fat consumption should be strictly limited to cut the risk of heart disease and death.But experts say the recommendations, which have been followed for the past 30 years, were not backed up by scientific evidence and should never have been issued. The guidelines, introduced in the UK in 1983 and in the US six years earlier, recommended reducing overall dietary fat consumption to 30% of total energy intake and saturated fat to 10%.

Look up Ancel Keys, the zealot who got us started on the fat is bad path. It was never science. It was "science", politics and special interests.
The true culprit is carbs, well fast carbs, the carbs that are quickly absorded into glucose, spiking insulin and endogenous fat production from that absorbed glucose. When they took out the fat from all the crap in the supermarket, they replaced it with carbs. Had to replace it with something.
You can see the obsesity rates, diabetes, and all the "metabolic disorder" crap track nicely with the low-fat recommendations which hit back in the late 70s.
This is the biggest medical fail in history, really.

My sister had kidney stones. I hope for Maet's sake that they've improved medicine since she went through that. Not to be too graphic or anything, but it involved a peeing into a filter and "passing" the stones. According to her, it's pretty painful.

There's no need to go overboard. "Slow carbs" as found in many vegetables aren't that bad. They don't spike your glucose. Starch/sugar, though, cut that out. A little treat now and then once the lard is gone off your gut, but don't relapse.

After my bypass surgery, the doctors preached at me about a plant-based diet because Fat Is The Enemy. I just nodded and pretended to listen. They also wanted me eating around 60 carbs per meal. I maybe eat a third of that on most meals, eat three eggs daily for breakfast and don't worry about fat intake.
Result: They say I'm one of the speediest recoveries they've seen. Now excuse me while I go eat some lard.

I'm thrilled for you to be escaping Liberal-Land.
But I hope that you'll be fully prepared for the type of heat that you will encounter down here.
On the bright side, you also get day after day of blue sky weather, mild winters and the ability to buy a gun with very little hassle.

rickl, to be serious for a moment, and thenI'll stop, I lost 20 pounds, in around 3 months by not eating any processed carbs, and no potatoes. Ate whatever vegetable I wanted, and some, not a lot, fruit. Anything that had had a pulse once was on the menu. No getting on scales initially.
I was tired of holding my breath to tie my shoes.

It's amazing what cutting carbs can do. Obviously my experience is anecdotal, but it is almost the same as yours.
When I want to cut a few pounds, all I do is cut carbs and maybe move to seafood more than land animals. Mostly because fish is slightly lower in calories than meat and I can eat even more of it!
The problem? Pasta, bread and butter, and garlic and caramelized onion mashed potatoes.

Crews will install the roof over Thursday and Friday. The customer, being an educated man, figured quite rightly, that I'd cut in a hell of a deal on the roof, and figured I deserved a little more for my not inconsiderable efforts.
So, out he comes with a Marlin 1982 model, manufactured in 1898. Lever action, .22 LR, precursor to the vaunted Model 39.
Right at the low end of "NRA-GOOD" condition, shootable and entirely intact and functional. Very mild pitting, the bluing is half-browned out, the wood is 95% or so, and it's never been touched insofar as refinishing (which lowers values immensely).
Gives it to me as a gift, won't take no for an answer. It's laying across the love-seat, opposite my recliner in the living room.
It's a wonderful, beautiful rifle. A thing of beauty.
Gonna be the hardest and most tearful canoe trip, ever!

Being next door to him for whatever time he has left would solve many, many problems and also take the heat off my sis, who is freaking (and in Pasadena). Hell, if they needed me to, I could pay a year up front, no problem. Just luck now, which has been in really short supply for me the last couple of months (had my identity stolen, too, and those are just the highlights, it's fuckin' ridiculous).

rickl, to be serious for a moment, and thenI'll stop, I lost 20 pounds, in around 3 months by not eating any processed carbs, and no potatoes. Ate whatever vegetable I wanted, and some, not a lot, fruit. Anything that had had a pulse once was on the menu. No getting on scales initially.
I was tired of holding my breath to tie my shoes.

I wasn't overweight, but I still managed to lose 10 pounds in the last year, from 180 to 170.
Like I said, I still like bread, rice, and potatoes, but I eat smaller portions less frequently. I will cook a recipe and separate it into plastic containers and freeze them, then microwave them later. For example, if I make a batch of mashed potatoes that the recipe says "serves four", I will separate it into five or six servings.

Yeah, that's sort of what I parsed out of it too. Here's the thing, it's contract work. It was bid out, contracts awarded, POs issued. If you didn't already have OT/After Hours work figured in, you're fucked. And it's not anyone else's responsibility whether or not you pay the proper rates.

Maet did they put in a stent and tell you to drink fluids cause that's the least painful way to flush the stone out. If I remember you've has stones before did they test them to see if the were diet induced? Such as too much calcium.

A few weeks ago, after praying about guidance re how to lose weight and become healthy again, I awoke with perfect clarity.
I threw out all the diet food. Restocked with real butter and cheese. I started eating meat or seafood with every meal. I still eat pasta and bread, but find that I can't eat much because the meat is so filling.
When I crave something really bad, like DQ, I tell myself that if I still want it tomorrow, or the next day, that I'll get it then.
I've dropped about 1.5 pounds per week since making these very easy-to-live-with changes to my diet.
I'm simply blown away by how easy it is.

When I have food cravings...it's usually always for protein: meat, fish, nuts.
But the best sources of potassium are foods like beans, potatoes, bananas...which I have had to force myself to eat.

Back in the 90s, my husband and I read The Protein Power Plan by the Drs. Eades. The doctors gave a summary of what the research really revealed, and said that fat was fine, carbs needed to be cut back, cholesterol was not a concern if your carb consumption was under control, and sufficient vitamin D was crucial.
It all sounded heretical, but they made a good case for their guidelines.
It has been amazing to watch each of their crazy ideas get vindicated.

Not enough potassium in the system can be dangerous.
I have a handicapped sister who has this problem. A number of times she just collapsed, having lost all control over her voluntary muscles. Any less and her heart or lungs would have shut down. Unfortunately, she was so scared that she couldn't articulate what was happening and we didn't find out until later that the problem was with her potassium levels being chronically too low.
It's diagnosed and being treated now, at least.

Try Morton's Lite Salt to season your food, it replaces a lot of the sodium with potassium, it may help to get your potassium up

When I was in the hospital for my UC, they said my potassium was deadly low, so I had to take a giant frigging horse pill every four hours.
Made everything I ate taste like metal for weeks. The Dilaudid helped. A lot.

Yep. I have had the paralysis twice. Easily fixed, but scary as hell. I recognize the symptoms now and haven't had it happen in years.
My levels are usually chronically low, they have no idea why. It occasionally spikes, too, but it's mainly low. I have mitichondrial issues and I always wonder if there's a connection.
My B12 is also almost non-existent.

First, where was the hot witch? I remember hearing about that and catching glimpses in the trailer. I guess she was cut from the final film.
Maybe they wanted to focus more on the "love story", but what kind of wife damns your soul to eternal hell when she didn't catch you cheating? The guy did everything right to save his kingdom.
That was a weakness in the storyline. First, he wants the power to defeat his enemies. He has stared evil in the face and knows what happens if he feeds within three days. But he knows his people will turn on him when they see what he's become. He then turns them all into monsters and kills them anyway. So, what was the point? Are we rooting for a serial killer or a pussy-whipped sap?
I thought it was ok, but I guffawed at the end when they seriously thought there was a sequel in the making. Maybe they'll have more scenes with Charles Dance.

It may come to that, but don't pile on.
Most of the pills are for people who take diuretics (usually for high bp)

First time was a little rough, (and I have smallish veins, on top of it) but I have high pain tolerance, plus it was no worse than the shingles I had years ago.

Carol, roses seem to do well in these hot, dry places. We just water 'em regularly and don't expect any buds in the hottest part of the summer.
Heck, here in the Valley of the Sunstroke I've only lost one rose bush and that was because I didn't plant it soon enough.
And I have a "black thumb" when it comes to plants.

My blood pressure is on the low side...and have always experienced a bit of irregular heartbeat, if I sit around too much.
But that's a circulation thing, not a heart thing.
I'm tall but small boned, if that makes any sense...so it goes with the territory, so to speak.
The worst symptoms I have from the potassium deficiency are muscle cramps...charley-horse type muscle cramps.

Maybe they wanted to focus more on the "love story", but what kind of wife damns your soul to eternal hell when she didn't catch you cheating? The guy did everything right to save his kingdom.
That was a weakness in the storyline. First, he wants the power to defeat his enemies. He has stared evil in the face and knows what happens if he feeds within three days. But he knows his people will turn on him when they see what he's become. He then turns them all into monsters and kills them anyway. So, what was the point? Are we rooting for a serial killer or a pussy-whipped sap?
I thought it was ok, but I guffawed at the end when they seriously thought there was a sequel in the making. Maybe they'll have more scenes with Charles Dance.

That movie was the epitome of soulless corporate, assembly line crap. If they cared, they could have made a good movie combining the real Vlad Tepes with the Dracula legend, but they gave zero fucks. Now that the fat myth has been debunked, I wish Oreo cookies would go back to their original recipe -- I know years ago they took out fat and replaced it with sugar so they give me a sugar-headache now. Depends on where the bear is from. Their meat is very fatty, and fat concentrates the flavors and contaminants of whatever else the bear is eating. Close to a city or town, that can include garbage and associated heavy metals contamination from cans, etc.
Also, bear meat is very prone to carry parasites, including trichinella nativa, a parasite that causes trichinosis and which cannot be killed by freezing.
So it can only be safely served well done, and the best way to do that is by stewing or braising. Steaks and burgers will either be too well done, or a form of culinary Russian roulette.
Other than that, yum.

You really don't eat bear, except for the tenderloin. They are nasty as shit, and stink. The ones in Eastern NC eat mostly crops, they still are nasty.

Just mentioned OK because I know what the scorching heat is like in TX, because we get it almost as bad here.

It gets hot in May and lasts till September.
Sometimes we luck out, and don't get two months of 100-degree temps in July-August.
But then...sometimes we get 90 days straight, of temps 100 degrees or over.

I saw that scene being shot. The 'strip club' exterior was a dressed up theater (stage, not movie) on La Palma just off Hollywood Blvd. Back then I used to go to the news stand across the street for some hard to find import computer mags. Very specialized geekery.
Years later I saw her shoot the B5 scene where Ivanova uses the Great Machine for the first time to broadcast the rebel news. There were issues because the prop had been built around the much taller John Schuck.

Well, apparently CBS decided they were so against the idea of someone who doesn't get his kicks pissing all over half the audience, that they chose to give it to Colbert anyway... and then went ahead and paid the $8 mil to Ferguson.
Literally a *week* later, Ferguson said he was walking away from The Late Late Show. Ferguson *swears* not getting Letterman's spot didn't bother him... but I personally find that hard to believe, especially given how quickly Craig announced he was quitting.
I'm hoping, REALLY hoping, CBS comes to regret their decision to go with Colbert. It would truly be poetic justice.

I moved from MI to Oklahoma. Got use to the weather pretty quickly. I'll trade the summer heat for winter any day. I'd would never go back to northern winters. We get a little snow here - 4" I think this year. Doesn't last very long. Really only have about two weeks of pretty hot days in the summer. People here talk about it being humid, I just laugh. Most of the time much drier than MI and from when I've been there, much drier than Boston.

So Seth Rollins is a big WWE guy, one of the top bad guys right now. And one of the crop of new young stars in last few years.
Anyway, last night right after Raw went live, somebody hacked his twitter/instagram accounts and posted a naked pic of a WWE diva, as they call their female wrestlers. Well, not a diva yet but a girl in their developmental system in Florida.
(When you sign with WWE, you first go to Florida to train, sometimes for years, before being called up to Raw, Smackdown, etc. Most who sign never make it out of developmental, they train for a year or two then get cut.)
Anyway, the naked chick Rollins clearly was banging did not please his fiance who, while Raw was still airing live, then went on her twitter and posted naked pics of Rollins.
My bet is the fiance posted both. Probably found the pic of the mistress on his phone or something. She timed it nicely to fuck over his life as much as possible in retaliation. He only recently made it to right near the top of WWE, probably just started making really good money, poised for a long career after spending a decade killing himself on indie shows in high school gyms for 50 people at a time.
Not clear how much this will hurt him. WWE has shortage of talent at the moment and he's very good at what he does. And he's really the victim here -- apart from the whole cheating on your fiance thing, at least.

A friend of mine moved from Ohio to Tennessee & brought his favorite roses with him. He grew & continues to grow mosh in pots. He has told me roses I have in Boston area will get this big, about same results he had in Ohio.
In TN roses will grow longer & taller but smaller blooms everywhere in heat of summer.

It's been a derelict ruin since 1978, and now SpaceX plans to repurpose it as a landing pad. They already lease LC-40 from the Air Force and have been using that pad since 2010. Last year they signed a 20 year lease for LC-39A, one of the two most historic launch pads in the world (the other one is in Russia).

The thing is, the roots of our civilization were organic and the ability to have both liberty and virtue was due to a rare confluence of historical events and trends that is impossible to implement directly.
Most societies have don't have that, but are capable of existing. The chance of those rarefied conditions that led to America being recreated are almost nill.

I couldn't see over snow mountains in my small city Friday at stop signs. There is no reason I have to go out today, unless I put boots on to bring recycle things out to bin.
Local Boston news said they are moving & dumping snow in Boston but they aren't going to do anything on my street except wait for it to melt & from forecast 20s are all we can expect.

Seems to be a lot of news coverage about the moral dilemma of dumping polluted show into Boston Harbor, or letting the sun melt it.
I know that several years ago, when Baltimore got like five feet of snow, they brought in those huge snow dragons which could melt a dumptruck full of snow in about thirty seconds.
And then let the melted snow run into the gutter.
And the storm drain would dump into Baltimore harbor.

We shouldn't concede the point that the Crusades were some awful terrible thing.
The Crusades was united Christian Europe helping the Byzantine empire recover lands lost to the saracen empire back around 1000AD. There was contant pressure and war and thus multiple crusades. It was no more evil than the Allies in WWI or WWII trying to take back lands from invading Germans. This was a political thing not a religious thing per se, but done to help brothers in Christ and hence the papal involvement.
Now it is true the Frankish knights ended up creating their own state based on their conquest of the Holy Land, instead of giving it tothe Byzantines, but then when we recaptured the Phillipines from Japan, we kept bases.
No different.
Critics will point out some atrocity, of which there were some, but they are endemic to war, and its akin to condeming the US as a war criminal because of Dresden and Hiroshima, without considering the context of Nazi/japanese aggression. For the Crusads, the context is that Byzantine was a fading empire and the Islamic caliphate an aggressive one. It was aggression from Islam that led to the Crusades, ie, the Crusades were a response to aggression.
