Quote of the Day I

qotdiowa3

Quote of the Day II

Hardly anything on TV at the Brian Williams level is accidental. That riveting account of death-defying derring-do with Letterman would have been worked out during the pre-interview for the show - in other words, the misremembering was painstakingly rehearsed. Maybe Williams is delusional. Maybe he is to anchors as Anthony Wiener is to wankers - a guy so cocksure he figures he can push it a little further each time.

-- Mark Steyn

The Mainstreaming of Lying

I noticed this in my law practice. When I first started out, you hit the litigation jackpot if you could show that the opposing party had lied about any semi-material fact. If you showed this in the pre-trial stages, opposing counsel usually would settle the case for peanuts. If you showed it during trial, the judge or the jury would slam the lying party.

As time went on, I noticed that judges and juries were less impressed by a showing that a party lied. To take but one example, in my last trial, a case I handled for a friend last year, the judge (who was generally excellent and who decided the merits in our favor) was dismissive of evidence that demonstrated dishonesty by the opposing party.

The turning point, I think, was the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky matter.

How Bad is It For Brian Williams? Even Gawker is now mocking him:

British SAS Sets Up Special Rescue Force to Rescue Any Shot-Down Jordanian Pilots

Defence sources confirmed last night that the UK has stepped up efforts to prevent another coalition pilot being taken by the enemy should their aircraft be shot down.

The Joint Personnel Recovery (JPR) units will be 12-man teams. The troops are poised to board armour-protected Chinook helicopters and will be accompanied on rescue missions by jets providing 'top cover'.

A Special Forces source said: 'We may have very little time to respond but we can go in with a lot of firepower and, depending on where he lands, we can hopefully get a downed pilot back before he is snatched by IS. This could be on the ground in Syria or in parts of Iraq occupied by the insurgents.

Oh and fuck-you-very-much Turkey:

'But for as long as Turkey refuses to allow its air bases to be used to used for operational missions, there is only so much that can be done. The major centres of IS, such as Kobani and Raqqa, are a long way from bases in Gulf states, including Jordan.'

SAS Trains Snipers to Avoid Jihadi Kidnap in UK After MoD Blows Their Cover

Oops.

Defence chiefs published online and in official reports the names and photographs of sharpshooters - a move the snipers say could endanger their lives.

...On the courses at SAS headquarters in Hereford, the snipers are being advised how to escape and evade capture if jihadis strike at their homes or when they are going about their everyday lives.
They are also warned not to carry military identification, remove their names from the electoral roll and to report suspicious activity to police.
The courses include briefings on cyber-security, with the snipers being shown how to thwart attempts to hack into their mobile phones, email and Facebook pages.
The extraordinary measures had to be brought in after the Ministry of Defence breached rules that state that members of Britain's Special Forces and snipers should never be identified.

Worst Mother in the World?

Possibly also one of the worst wives in the world.

The Worst Mother speaks out here.

Now there is an argument that can be made that in a third-world country like Armenia a downs-syndrome baby might be better off in an institution but note that that's not the argument the mother is making. And her actions belie her true motives.

Worst Almost Mother Ever: Feminist Aborts Her Male Baby Because Patriarchy

I stand by my decision to abort my baby because it was a male.

I don't hate men, I hate the patriarchy, what men, and even some women, turn into, I wasn't going to let that happen with my offspring. The chances were greater that it would with a male, it was unacceptable.

If the curse returns, I would do the exact same thing all over again.

Well she's a liar. Clearly she hates men, enough so that she would kill her own child for no other reason than it was a male one. And note that even friends and family members have cut her off over this decision.

Leave Brian Williams alone!

It's not like he
said you could keep your health insurance plan, keep your doctor and
that an average family of four could save $2,500 a year.
Now
that's a real whopper. A lie that was debated in the White House by
aids and senior staffers. A lie that directly affected millions of
people and about 16% of the economy.
What Williams did was nothing. If Barack can keep his job, why shouldn't Brian.

Yeah. The story about the Armenian baby with DS is really killing me. I know it seems unfathomable that someone would just leave their kid, but it was a pretty common practice here, too, not that long ago. George Will has written about how the doctors sincerely asked him and his wife if they planned on taking their son home, too, when he was born with DS.

I don't know what this situation will look like after another few million kids with DS are killed through abortion.

191 Good point. Oscars are the Super Bowl of acting. Determines who "wins".

But part of the attraction of the awards show is seeing all the famous people together, which only happens a few ties a year.

ABC must love the Academy Awards so much. It's a 3-4 hr TV show with the top 100 most famous movie stars -- and you don't have to them a dime! Genius!

Academy Awards gets better ratings than every other non-NFL show on TV. It's usually the 5th or 6th most watched show of the year with 40M+ viewers.

What a business model.

Emmys do much worse than Grammys or Oscars in TV ratings. Probably cause we see TV stars on TV so much, it's not that neat. Grammys has all the live music -- 6 of the top 10 awards shows are music shows, so that is a clear draw.

Movie stars are still movie stars, top of the fame charts.

387 Here's a fun bit of trivia. Enzo Ferrari never dreamed of being anything more than a racecar driver. But, running a car-racing team is expensive, so he decided to start selling his hand-built cars to finance his racing team.

Well, he had one customer, a guy who ran a tractor factory, who was constantly annoying him with suggestions for improvements on his designs. Finally, Ferrari just got sick of this dude, and wrote him back, basically telling him, "Hey, I'm the one who builds racecars. You build tractors. If I ever decide to start building tractors, I'll take your advice into consideration. Otherwise, I'll thank you to fuck right off, and if you think you can do better at building sports cars, go right ahead and try, Mr. Lamborghini."

Lotto cars.

Okay, I'll go a bit eclectic here. Remember the early '80s Mercedes 123 body? 300-D, in the sedan, coupe and wagon variants. Five cylinder diesel, turbo diesel in the later years.

Well, I'd get a mint wagon, and a donor coupe. IT would take a talent like Foose to do what I want, but it would end up as an altered wagon, wearing the Coupe's larger doors, and with the body and window sides aft of the doors made as to echo a Chevy Nova kind of setup. The rear sedan doors would be surplus, of course.

I'd have the builder do a "every last bolt and wire" remanufacture, with a zero-time engine, transmission and every other rotating and reciprocating part. And, keep the outer panel of the climate control system, but ditch all the vacuum lines, and convert that system, the cruise and the door locks to all electric.

Then, have the interior mods all done to "factory new" standards. I'd want the car built to such a standard of perfection, that Stuttgart might well put a new warranty on it.

Second car would be a 67 Pontiac Catalina, but with the full "resto-mod" treatment. Modern everything under the skin, multi-link suspension, 4 wheel discs, honkin' big 3 row aluminum radiator, etc etc. Some styling mods, but not a typical "slammed" or big-wheeled modern custom. 17" Cragar SS classic wheels would be just fine. But, stuff like the headlights? Modern projectors, all LED tail lights n' turn signals, other subtle touches. Have 'em all styled in to blend with the OEM, and not look like a Pep Boys catalog puked all over the car.

General Purpose car? Go to the market, and find the lowest mileage, cleanest possible 2007 Crown Victoria. Tweak it under the skin with good handling and some power mods, but nothing extreme. 'Vics are sleepers. And can flat out inhale vast stretches of highway, a 400 mile tank of gas at a time.

Truck? Just an F-150 FX-2 SuperCab, 5.0, no jacked up craziness. Just another truck.

Motorcycles though. I'd need a whole barn, just for those, but that's a whole 'nuther list.

Oh, and a Rockwell 112 light single, with the panel ridiculously updated to a full Garmin glass cockpit suite, all ADs completed, and every good STCd speed mod installed.

Finally. A canoe. Every Moron Millionaire needs a good canoe for proper Arsenal Management.

Opening with AC/DC, (Sir) Tom Jones singing, and Annie Lennox being featured. Tony Bennett up soon. Old people, like me!! Yes, I had to live through a rode-hard--put-away-wet Madonna performance. But I enjoy watching her, knowing I'm 6 years older than she is and look about 10 years younger. But even the younger music-crowd performances have not been hurl-inducing. I really can't do politics in my position, but I can give them the facts and remind who the party of slavery was, the Dems!

538 #516: It's also worth noting that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would not have passed without overwhelming Republican support.

Democrats, led by Lyndon Johnson himself, blocked every attempt at Civil Rights legislation throughout the 50s, when Eisenhower supported it and pushed for it. But the moment Johnson became President, he turned around and supported Civil Rights, because he could now take credit for it.

Democrats still generally stood against Civil Rights, and they held a huge Senate majority, but Everett Dirkson, the Republican Senate Minority Leader, made a passionate speech to his caucus urging them to put aside partisan politics and support the Civil Rights Act just because it was the right thing to do.

Dirkson's speech is considered one of the greatest speeches in American political history, and without it, the Civil Rights Act would've failed. But who gets the credit for that law? Lyndon Johnson, who led the charge against similar bills whenever Republicans had pushed for them in the past.

539 I recommend a 'Phalaenopsis' orchid for someone who has never had an orchid before.

They are also called a 'moth orchid'...and come in a variety of colors.
They are quite easy to care for.

Home Depot and Lowes usually have some nice ones, in their garden departments...and at decent prices.

I remember teaching an analytical chemistry lab once. The students were given a mixture of two chemicals and they were supposed to determine what percentage of each compound was.

They figured this out by doing to separate titrations: The first time with a chemical that reacted with both. The second time with the same chemical, but with another chemical added to the mixture to prevent reaction with one of the chemicals in the mixture. In other words. they reacted both, and then just one.

Obviously, when you have the same amount of mixture, you will need more titration to react both, then just one.

Well, two students asked me why their computer program was saying that they had over 100% of one of the chemicals in the mixture.

A quick glance at the date showed me they screwed up the titration: The reaction with both chemicals in the mixture required 4mL of titration; the reaction with just one required 5mL.

I pointed this out and they didn't get it.

I made them do the calculations on the dry erase board. They wiped out their calculators and they didn't understand why I told them to put it down. I even had to explain to them how to round to do the calculation by hand.

Even then, they didn't get it and wanted to know how to make the computer program spit out the "correct" number.
