Snow alert is from 10 pm tonight through 1 am Tuesday & it started a half hour or so ago.
It's hard driving here because it's hard to see over mountains of snow at stop signs & I wanted to stop at bakery last evening but small parking lot is tough to get out of in good weather.
I usually pull in front in bus stop but it was close to 6 pm & busses were running. I didn't want to get ticket.

For some people this has to be stress inducing.

But, I've read of the things you're looking for in a place to settle, and those are some damn fine towns in lush Eastern portion of the Texas Hill Country. And, you'll find them populated by salt-of-the-earth, Moron grade Texas Citizens, of the first order.
Classic, small town Americana, interwoven into much of what's best about Texas. And, you're in the heart of the Texas Wildflower areas..... Springtime there is every bit as stunning as the Autumn Leaves in Vermont.
I've extensively traveled those areas, mostly from the seat of a Honda Gold Wing. But also, I've hunted deer and hog on ranches in the area, I've enjoyed many a civic festival, rodeo, BBQ cook off and other such festivities.
If I weren't such a rabid salt-water dog, I'd be living up there, already.

I had suggested to Carol, that "heaven on Earth" towns in Texas would be:
Copperas Creek
Lampasas
Burnet
Marble Falls
Fredricksburg
Kerrville
There are many, many others, but those are in a particular sweet spot, towards the Eastern end of the Texas Hill Country. More lush and green than the more Western end out around Bandera. That said, Kerrville is closer to Bandera, but it's a great place.
All those towns are but an hour from either Austin or San Antonio. You're not eons from major amenities.
Damn well worth the drive for a scouting trip, if you're so inclined.

When my brother was in college he bought a junker. He crawled in the trunk and told his girfriend to shut it. After she closed the trunk he realized that he had the keys in his pocket. Fortunately there was a spot completely rusted out so he was able to toss the keys out for him to open the trunk.

City I live in 6-7 miles from Boston seems to be moving snow from main streets to parks. They have done nothing on my small street. Snow storm was Monday & it hasn't been warm enough to melt anything. Today's high was 27 & thermometer in kitchen outside is in the sun & shouldn't be.
Your daughter I believe still lives is same city or part of Boston & it's part of Boston. My city moves to parks, older brother drives on one of two way streets around. I stopped going down that street last year because I was stuck behind trash removal trucks once too often when it was full of snow.

The TIVO is set up to record new ones and it's not recording it, so it was scheduled to be a re-run tonight.
SNL does about 2 new ones in a row, then takes about 2-3 weeks off before another new show.
Plus next Sunday they are running the 40th Anniversary special in primetime. Saturday night they will be running the first SNL from 1975. It will be curious looking back on the whole show if it was all truly funny, or if it is like the normal and have about 1/4 to 1/2 the show truly funny.

Oh, yeah, I know it was funny in the past. I used to watch it when it was a new and fresh show. Bassamatic. "Julia Child" gushing blood all over the set and continuing on with her cooking show. Dan Akroyd was one of the best ever on that show.
But it got terrible a long time ago. The most I watch anymore is a few minutes that I get by accident in passing.
I saw a sketch a couple months ago that was some rerun. It had Tina Fey. It was so unfunny, I couldn't believe they even let it on the show. Tina can be funny. I don't like her, but she can be funny. If she didn't hang her head in shame after that thing, she should have.

I have copy of Cthulhu file of various states he's seriously considered moving to. Texas is One on List Now for us.
Paul is in same city & w/in walking distance of his son, ex wife & two daughters are close by. He's been here in MA since mid August & I've only visited once when he was in ICU on ventilator in October. He never calls unless it's holiday or my birthday.
I have been to that city 5-6 times & only went when he was in ICU.
I cannot bring myself to go to nursing home after almost six years of going out every weekend day, Wednesday, Holiday to see my mother.

That's the thing, right there. Everyone can say "I remember when SNL was funny." Because you'd never seen it before and you're still into some juvenile humor.
You can pick skits from every era of SNL and see the standout actors or the biting, witty humor. If you've "seen something like it" before... meh.
Humor is also subjective, so there's that.

It's on TCM now but it's too dark for me to watch. Comcast has its advantages, very good CS except one time in December when home phone & Internet were out, tech called house phone to make sure I was home but didn't read service ticket completely to know home phone wasn't working.
I insisted they come here on Sunday & they did & called cell before getting out of truck.
TCM should have Citizen Kane on demand Monday.

Yeah, it did that. But funny is ephemeral, and it lasted longer than most. Phil Hartman. Eddie freaking Murphy in his prime. Even Piscopo doing Sinatra could rock. It had a good run.
I used to watch it religiously. Now, no. I'd watch it again in a heartbeat if it seemed to have its mojo again. Last thing I watched that I liked was an opener with Aaron Paul as the kicker. Decently funny. But a long way from where it was.

The show has always had some good parts, and some really bad parts. The first cast seasons had some very good skits, and some really bad skits. As the show has gone on from season to season, that remained the same for the most part.
The show has had some great cast members, some great casts, some bad cast members, and some shitty casts, but usually they could squeeze a few good laughs.
What was funny was when ABC did "Fridays" in the late 70's. It was when the original cast was ending their run, and the 2nd cast was about ready to start. That show's cast hung with SNL's first cast, and blew the 2nd one away.

Dunno. He strikes me as the sort of dude who'd be a gas to have drinks with and shoot the breeze. But, things would get crazy over time. Cruise is hard to define as an actor. He seems to just do Cruise most of the time, then turns around and does something completely different that makes you go "huh. maybe this dude is more capable than he lets on". Well, interestingly, I have someone in my family who did exactly that, for decades.
An elderly male relative of mine -- let's just call him my great uncle -- was in WWII. He was injured during the war, and as a result still received a disability check every month from the Veterans' Administration.
Whenever anyone would ask him about what his injury was and how he received it, he always would reply, "I don't want to talk about it. Too painful. War is hell." Or something to that effect.
His stoic denials, his steely suppression of his PTSD, always impressed us little 'uns.
"Wow, it was so intense," we thought, "he doesn't even wan to remember the horror, the pain."
It was only decades later that I finally found out the truth from one of his ex-wives: The "injury" he had gotten during WWII was (are you ready for this?) an ulcer.
Yes, a stomach ulcer brought on by fear and stress.
He never saw battle. Never took a bullet. He was evacuated and sent home because of an ulcer.
Which promptly healed once he got back stateside.
But because he got it while deployed, it somehow counted as a "war wound."
My great-uncle could have taught Brian Williams a thing or two about how to impress people with vagueness and denials.

That being said, I refuse to give anyone else "tips". ESPECIALLY Family. I am scared to death that emotion creeps in when you try to be "too perfect".

Gotta disagree with you there. I'd say it was 80% hilarious, with only a few weak spots. In my opinion it's one of the funniest comedies I've seen in the last decades (I'm pretty harsh and judgmental on comedies, too).
I thought the whole "drug addiction" Jack Black subplot was the weakest part -- "getting high" (or drunk) and being desperate for drugs are such cliche comedy gimmicks that they stopped being funny a long time ago.
But aside from that, it came close to being a classic.

It's the sort of movie that doesn't have to be special. It doesn't need to make much sense, have much character development or tell a story in the traditional sense. It's just a bunch of shit that happens tied together pretty loosely. It just has to be funny, which it is. Is it a bunch of scenes linked together in a totally implausible mannr? Yes. Is it technically a great film? No. But it's funny as hell. That's what counts.

Honestly though all the "actors" in the movie are cliches. That's kind of the point. Yeah sure comedian with a drug addiction has been done to death, literally. But you've got the wide eyed star struck actor in his first role that does everything while the others are jaded. The unserious action star that wants to be taken seriously. The serious actor that takes himself far too seriously. And he rapper that wants to be a movie star.

I always say that it was 9/11 that "made the scales drop from my eyes" and mugged me from a liberal to a conservative.
But actually, in retrospect now, I look back and realize I was already starting to change even in the years leading up to 9/11.
The three big incidents that really started to put me off left-wing-ism prior to 9/11 were:
1. Progressives + women defending Bill Clinton during the Gennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky scandals. I thought, "WTF??? He's obviously the exact sort of sleazeball feminists are supposed to hate - -and yet they rush to his defense???"
2. Clinton bombing Serbia during the Yugoslav breakup. It didn't make any sense then, and it still doesn't make sense -- and yet the lefties all rushed to support his war actions, simply because he was a Dem.
3. The Seattle WTO riots in 1999. That actually was the real deal breaker. I couldn't really admit it to myself internally yet, but those riots soured me on leftism permanently.
It took 9/11 for me to acknowledge what had already been brewing inside for years.
And in fact it wasn't the attacks on 9/11 that flipped me from left to right -- it was the progressive response to the attack (blame Bush, blame Jews, "We had it coming," conspiracy theories, etc.) that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

But, I'll wager you this. The family incongruities, which you've previously described.... those are the things that piqued your heart, that stirred a primal discontent with the status-quo. Not that they even directly spoke to any given political issue or alignment. Just that they drove a sense of internal dissonance that could not be ignored.
Those events you listed? They harmonized with that dissonance. That's when things began to take shape and come into focus.
Your instincts as regards your family led you, long, long before any external factors such as news, politics and events.
But, when those happened, they hit you like a hammer.

I've never ridden a horse. I used to ride mountain bikes over every sort of terrain available in Northeast Ohio. Miles and miles and miles. (We have no mountains ...so there's that.)
We used to make the last eight-to-ten a sprint. A "contest" amongst kids. When we got off of those bikes, we could barely find air, let-alone move.
We pushed it to the fucking limit and "Had The Good Hurt" for a few days!

Chemically speaking, it is just a matter of concentration.
Many of the horrible "ass smells" are due to pnictogens.
Concentrated, they are indeed indicative of rotting flesh, poop, urine, &c.
In dilute amounts, they are sensed by the human body as wonderful (and are present in perfumes, choloclate, &c.).
I've always hypothesized that those with a fetish for poop/pee have mis-wiring in the brain that senses increasing levels of pnicotgens not with a transition from pleasant to disgusting, but with increasing pleasure.

Some people also like the smell of skunk. It doesn't really bother me, for example, though I wouldn't want to be sprayed with it.
