The women asked the wardens if they could come inside and drink. The wardens let them in and proceeded to party with the women before leaving their designated to posts to take part in an orgy promised by the scantily clad women. The report claims that the women then drugged the guards with spiked whiskey and lured the guards away from their posts with promises of an orgy. Instead of an orgy, the guards were stripped naked and handcuffed. The women then stole the guards keys and unlocked all the jail cells. The prisoners who wanted to escape simply walked out the front door. Two Cellos Their cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit. In 2015, longstanding religious hatred and political wrangling are again sweeping Europe with their own shadowy sources in the last century. Kings, princes and politicians again employ draconian measures to control criticism and stop change. In this global struggle, villages have been destroyed, schools bombed, and disease left unchecked. Nor have our contemporaries lacked imagination in their violence. Schoolgirls have been kidnapped, journalists beheaded, and interrogation methods enhanced. The religious violence sweeping Europe is being committed by militant Islamists, not Christians and it isn't exactly shadowy. I suppose it is shadowy if you call them disaffected youths. Global violence is being directed AGAINST Christians. In 2014, nearly 5,000 Christians were killed and over 1,000 churches were attacked. Where's that list of Christians attacking muslims or their places of worship in the name of God? Star Trek Van This comment for the video cracked me up. Question of the Night: Why Are Cats Cute? I'm not arguing whether cats are cute -- they are. I'm asking why we humans think they're cute. What is it about their cute little cat-faces we find so adorable? Feline aesthetics, what they all about? If you don't like cats, or don't want to admit you think [most] cats are cute, puppies, then. What's the psychology behind it? There are certain cues or triggers to cats and dogs that we find aesthetically pleasing. What are they? Carol, I don't live in those towns, but rather, down here on the Gulf Coast, in Galveston.
But, I've read of the things you're looking for in a place to settle, and those are some damn fine towns in lush Eastern portion of the Texas Hill Country. And, you'll find them populated by salt-of-the-earth, Moron grade Texas Citizens, of the first order. Classic, small town Americana, interwoven into much of what's best about Texas. And, you're in the heart of the Texas Wildflower areas..... Springtime there is every bit as stunning as the Autumn Leaves in Vermont. I've extensively traveled those areas, mostly from the seat of a Honda Gold Wing. But also, I've hunted deer and hog on ranches in the area, I've enjoyed many a civic festival, rodeo, BBQ cook off and other such festivities. If I weren't such a rabid salt-water dog, I'd be living up there, already. I'll shoot you a mail, but my addy is in my nic here, too. More lush and green than the more Western end out around Bandera. That said, Kerrville is closer to Bandera, but it's a great place. All those towns are but an hour from either Austin or San Antonio. Don't want to call it burn out, because I think just a week away from it would probably be enough, but the schedule is killer through April. Have a week off in March, but its for an out-of-state wedding and flying with an infant in the wee hours of the morning is not likely to be very relaxing.

The whole comedy sketch or chat show business is odd. In any show there's only a couple funny bits -- and that's a good show. You're lucky to get 1 or 2 funny bits.
And those will all be all over youtube the next day. The next hour. I don't watch any comedy show on purpose. Yet I've seen the best Key & Peele skits. City I live in 6-7 miles from Boston seems to be moving snow from main streets to parks. They have done nothing on my small street. Snow storm was Monday & it hasn't been warm enough to melt anything. Today's high was 27 & thermometer in kitchen outside is in the sun & shouldn't be. Your daughter I believe still lives is same city or part of Boston & it's part of Boston. My city moves to parks, older brother drives on one of two way streets around. I stopped going down that street last year because I was stuck behind trash removal trucks once too often when it was full of snow. Posted by: Carol at February 07, 2015 11:46 PM (sj3Ax) 325

A SNL or Tonight Show or Conan or Daily Show? Seems a waste of time to watch them, even if you're a fan. Just wait a few hrs (or minutes) and have the hive mind filter out the best bits. Here's her bio: http://philosophy.columbia.edu/directories/faculty/christia-mercer She has negative credentials for what she wrote. She's an "expert" (to whatever extent she is) in 17th century philosophy. She is literally (not even in the Biden sense) an asshole with an opinion. And her whole academic oeuvre is bullshit even by academic standards. She did a neat academic trick, though. She made up a "30 volume set" (none of which is published yet, of course) in which she invites pompous ass academics to blather on. It's brilliant because she interviews them for the book series, they get to know her name, and they think she's awesome because she flatters them. Posted by: OG CELTIC-AMERICAN, COMRADE 69 ACTUAL at February 07, 2015 11:33 PM (k5yv5) The TIVO is set up to record new ones and it's not recording it, so it was scheduled to be a re-run tonight. SNL does about 2 new ones in a row, then takes about 2-3 weeks off before another new show. Plus next Sunday they are running the 40th Anniversary special in primetime. Saturday night they will be running the first SNL from 1975. It will be curious looking back on the whole show if it was all truly funny, or if it is like the normal and have about 1/4 to 1/2 the show truly funny. But it got terrible a long time ago. The most I watch anymore is a few minutes that I get by accident in passing.
Yeah, it did that. But funny is ephemeral, and it lasted longer than most. Phil Hartman. Eddie freaking Murphy in his prime. Even Piscopo doing Sinatra could rock. It had a good run. I used to watch it religiously. Now, no. I'd watch it again in a heartbeat if it seemed to have its mojo again. Last thing I watched that I liked was an opener with Aaron Paul as the kicker. Decently funny. But a long way from where it was. Posted by: Splunge at February 08, 2015 12:12 AM (qyomX) 399

Right, ppl age out of SNL viewing. Cause it's kinda the same old crap. How many fake game show or chat show sketches can you watch before getting bored. When you are young it's new to you and clever, even if SNL has been doing the same fake chat show joke for 40 years -- it's new to you.
By the 20th fake chat show sketch, though, it's just not funny anymore. I'm not sure, but I think SNL still gets 8M+ ppl to watch every show. That's quite good. If you can get 2-3% of America to watch your show, you have a hit. Posted by: Costanza Defense at February 08, 2015 12:23 AM (ZPrif) 424

You can pick skits from every era of SNL and see the standout actors or the biting, witty humor. If you've "seen something like it" before... meh. Humor is also subjective, so there's that. Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at February 08, 2015 12:09 AM (16bOT) The show has always had some good parts, and some really bad parts. The first cast seasons had some very good skits, and some really bad skits. As the show has gone on from season to season, that remained the same for the most part. The show has had some great cast members, some great casts, some bad cast members, and some shitty casts, but usually they could squeeze a few good laughs. What was funny was when ABC did "Fridays" in the late 70's. It was when the original cast was ending their run, and the 2nd cast was about ready to start. That show's cast hung with SNL's first cast, and blew the 2nd one away. Posted by: Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper, formerly MrCaniac at February 08, 2015 12:27 AM (+Fae7) 432

Right, SNL makes money precisely because it attracts younger viewers. It's actually hard to find exact #s of viewers cause nobody bothers reporting it -- just the # of 18-49 viewers in the demo. That's what the advertisers are paying for.
I did find the last seasons season high was 6.7M total so I think I over-estimated by 8M #. I do know it's generally the #1 show on Saturday night, unless there's a big football game. Posted by: Costanza Defense at February 08, 2015 12:34 AM (ZPrif) 449

He seems to just do Cruise most of the time, then turns around and does something completely different that makes you go "huh. maybe this dude is more capable than he lets on". He's done a lot of crappy movies, but enough gems and good performances to get begrudging respect from me, anyway. Posted by: otho at February 08, 2015 12:49 AM (tBSrv) 484

463 So last week's SNL might have had 6-7M ppl watch -- meanwhile the youtube clip of the opening Tom Brady bit has 3M views.
But youtube advertising pays out a fraction of what TV money pays. Meanwhile Tonight Show w/ Jimmy Fallon gets 3-4M view a night -- but their latest lip sync battle clip has 26M views on youtube. The funniest bits of late night TV get way more views on youtube now than TV. But way more money from TV. Posted by: Costanza Defense at February 08, 2015 12:40 AM (ZPrif) It's why ESPN pays $2B a year for Monday Night Football, NBC and Fox pay $1B a year for the NFL, and CBS paid $300M for 8 Thursday night games, plus $1B for the AFC games. Live TV tends to have viewers watching live, so advertisers can make sure that there is a call to action in their advertising. Why can't we take them at their word ? nobody is disputing Christianity has been violent but it's not happening routinely today as violence is by Muslims in the Mideast, Way to miss the point, Prof. Thank God I didn't go to Columbia and generally missed much of the liberal indoctrination If I want to read what a Phiilosopher says about Christianity there are plenty of people who'd make far better reading-and yes, I read her little article
And what's with that stupid grin and the posing of Obama in the prayer posture. in the Columbia story Most Christians-except kids when they say "This is the church. This is the steeple" don't use their hands like that. That is the "Namaste" gesture "The God in me recognizes the God in you" often used by Hindus . It's a nice gesture of respect when it's used by people of that culture or practicing Hindus. It look foolish when a man who clearly isn't a Hindu and isn't a practicing Christian uses it to talk about how the violence of Christianity of hundreds of years ago is parallel to violence of today Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 08, 2015 01:17 AM (DXzRD) 544

I missed the last thread when Ace invited people to rewrite Williams' story to be the sort of undebunkable reverse-brag that actual cool people employ.
Well, interestingly, I have someone in my family who did exactly that, for decades. An elderly male relative of mine -- let's just call him my great uncle -- was in WWII. He was injured during the war, and as a result still received a disability check every month from the Veterans' Administration. Whenever anyone would ask him about what his injury was and how he received it, he always would reply, "I don't want to talk about it. Too painful. War is hell." Or something to that effect. His stoic denials, his steely suppression of his PTSD, always impressed us little 'uns. "Wow, it was so intense," we thought, "he doesn't even wan to remember the horror, the pain." It was only decades later that I finally found out the truth from one of his ex-wives: The "injury" he had gotten during WWII was (are you ready for this?) an ulcer. Yes, a stomach ulcer brought on by fear and stress. He never saw battle. Never took a bullet. He was evacuated and sent home because of an ulcer. Which promptly healed once he got back stateside. But because he got it while deployed, it somehow counted as a "war wound." My great-uncle could have taught Brian Williams a thing or two about how to impress people with vagueness and denials. -Posted by: The Jackhole somewhere on Ventura Highway at February 08, 2015 01:17 AM (dULJN) I'll take this seven ways from Sunday. "Playing" the stock market is a worrisome endeavor. I've run a few futures up the flagpole and "cheated death". As a veteran Fantasy Baseball player, it is much the same. You take your peripherals, add-in simple mathematical knowledge and "go". One thing you have to know is "Never Confuse the Results With the Decision." If you take every factor that you can find into the decision and the market takes a shit? You bought it, but someone else broke it. Keep emotion out of it. That being said, I refuse to give anyone else "tips". ESPECIALLY Family. I am scared to death that emotion creeps in when you try to be "too perfect". Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at February 08, 2015 01:28 AM (16bOT) 557

It doesn't need to make much sense, have much character development or tell a story in the traditional sense. It's just a bunch of shit that happens tied together pretty loosely. It just has to be funny, which it is. Is it a bunch of scenes linked together in a totally implausible mannr? Yes. Is it technically a great film? No. But it's funny as hell. That's what counts. I always say that it was 9/11 that "made the scales drop from my eyes" and mugged me from a liberal to a conservative. But actually, in retrospect now, I look back and realize I was already starting to change even in the years leading up to 9/11. The three big incidents that really started to put me off left-wing-ism prior to 9/11 were: 1. Progressives + women defending Bill Clinton during the Gennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky scandals. I thought, "WTF??? He's obviously the exact sort of sleazeball feminists are supposed to hate - -and yet they rush to his defense???" 2. Clinton bombing Serbia during the Yugoslav breakup. It didn't make any sense then, and it still doesn't make sense -- and yet the lefties all rushed to support his war actions, simply because he was a Dem. 3. The Seattle WTO riots in 1999. That actually was the real deal breaker. I couldn't really admit it to myself internally yet, but those riots soured me on leftism permanently. It took 9/11 for me to acknowledge what had already been brewing inside for years. And in fact it wasn't the attacks on 9/11 that flipped me from left to right -- it was the progressive response to the attack (blame Bush, blame Jews, "We had it coming," conspiracy theories, etc.) that was the straw that broke the camel's back. @ zombie 578.
Thank you, for your kind and thoughtful reply. I won't argue that those are the internal touchstones you identify as catalytic to your post 9/11 awareness, and you've nailed some doozies in the process, indeed! But, I'll wager you this. The family incongruities, which you've previously described.... those are the things that piqued your heart, that stirred a primal discontent with the status-quo. Not that they even directly spoke to any given political issue or alignment. Just that they drove a sense of internal dissonance that could not be ignored. Those events you listed? They harmonized with that dissonance. That's when things began to take shape and come into focus. Your instincts as regards your family led you, long, long before any external factors such as news, politics and events. But, when those happened, they hit you like a hammer. Be happy to tell you my end of it all, sometime along the way. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at February 08, 2015 01:55 AM (RzZOc) 589

I used to listen to sports radio all of the times. That's what I did. ESPN, A.M. Radio, bitching about the portrayal of athletes' personifications in video games. I listened to Rush Limbaugh on the radio occasionally and watched his T.V. show. I knew that there was a "certain out-lash" against success, but he made it a bit clearer. ...Then 9/11 happened. When the left talked about "deserving this", I decided to drop any notions that the left wasn't that of my Father's generation anymore. While Democrats still voted for the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, they denied it, obfuscated, equivocated, apologized. ...their Base had gone radical. 4 or 5 years back, there was a post on how you became a conservative here at the HQ and I said at the time that it was the dims complete and utter shamelessness in pushing forward with sexual harassment laws and then turning a blind eye to Bubba Clinton. Looking back, I think I fall under the Overton Window, because I don't really feel that my values have changed much, it's just that I realised that even though the dims professed to have these beliefs, they didn't really. Freedom of speech? The right to property and self defense? A colorblind society? The list goes on, but you get the idea. Posted by: Darth Randall at February 08, 2015 02:32 AM (KlVdw) 648

I love how the Brit newspapers now cover those stories by saying the ones arrested are "Asian Men". That's the latest euphemism for MUSLIM these days in the British Caliphate. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at February 08, 2015 06:15 AM (RZzX3) 725

Stench is used for Ass smell. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at February 08, 2015 06:18 AM (RZzX3) Chemically speaking, it is just a matter of concentration. Many of the horrible "ass smells" are due to pnictogens. Concentrated, they are indeed indicative of rotting flesh, poop, urine, &c. In dilute amounts, they are sensed by the human body as wonderful (and are present in perfumes, choloclate, &c.). I've always hypothesized that those with a fetish for poop/pee have mis-wiring in the brain that senses increasing levels of pnicotgens not with a transition from pleasant to disgusting, but with increasing pleasure. It doesn't really bother me, for example, though I wouldn't want to be sprayed with it. Posted by: GnuBreed at February 08, 2015 06:34 AM (sD47d) 732

Like the smell of skunk I had drifting into the house from outside last night. The first little whiff isn't unpleasant.... A Sunday morning prayer-
God, our healer, I prayer for those that are sick, and for those that look after them. I pray for all those full of dread and anxiety and for those who carry the word of courage and faith. God, our counselor, I pray for those who are sorrowful or for those who have been hereaved. I pray for the weary and for those weighted down by chronic illness, pain or frailty. I part for those exhausted by the demands of work or caring for others and for those who turn to you for new strength, I pray fir those who are lonely, those without jobs and brothers and sisters in Christ suffering under oppression and violence because of their faith, I pray for our leaders, that they may be given wisdom a deep love for our Country, I pray that Muslims who commit violence may give up their weapons and turn to a love of Christ. Lord in the modest of suffering, I celebrate the promise of your peace, in the midst of doubt and despair-the promise of your presence and kingdom. In the midst of fear-everlasting joy. In the midst of sin and decay- the promise of salvation and renewal. In the midst of death. May we dwell in your promises and life them up before others with love and compassion the promise of life eternal. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 08, 2015 06:42 AM (DXzRD) 736

Speaking of truck drivers I usually prefer driving my truck because it's safer. People get out of the way and if by chance someone hits me it gonna hurt them more. They will likely end up underneath it rather than on it.
And Escalade drivers are the worst. Especially the ones that have the "Educator" tags on them. Posted by: freaked at February 08, 2015 07:19 AM (JdEZJ) 742
