Midnight Brian Williams Update: Williams Claimed to Have Looked Down the Very Tube of the RPG That Shot Down the Lead Copter in 2007

This scoop brought to you exclusively by Niedermeyer's Dead Horse (@mflynny on Twitter.)

Brian Williams stops by to brag on himself with the student reporters at Fairfield University in 2007.

Williams starts doing his Sergeant Rock shtick after a question is asked about what story has had the most impact on his life, starting at 1:42. Here is his answer:

"It gets me to thinking, I've been very lucky the way my life has turned out, I've been very lucky to have survived a few things that I've been involved in, at a perception a few minutes ago, I was remembering something I tend to forget, the war with Hezballah in Israel, a few years back, where there were Katuyshka rockets passing just beneath the helicopter I was riding in. A few years before that, you go back to Iraq, and I looked down the tube of an RPG that had been fired at us and it hit the chopper in front of ours."

So 2007 is a transitional phase in the telling of the story. He has not placed himself in the shot-down chopper as he would by 2013, but he is claiming explicitly that the chopper was right in front of him, and he witnessed its shoot-down.

Of course, he adds the whole new detail that he looked into the tube of the RPG launcher which took down the bird.

Also, we now hear of a chopper flight in Lebanon (or Israel) which was also menaced by rockets -- rockets passing just below his bird.

I don't know what he means by "at a perception." At reception? I don't know, none of it makes sense. In any event, that's not the key stuff.

More: Someone says they stayed in the same French Quarter hotel as Brian Williams during Katrina, and that he's full of crap with his tales of dead bodies flowing freely down the log-flume streets.

More:

He looked right down that tube.

41 I remember vividly staring at the eye of the sharknado, and knowing the city was counting on me. I'll admit that I thought about death, for a second, when the 2 ton shark devoured me whole. It was a jolting experience, and I felt frozen in time, and half digested D-List actors, but only for a second. I snapped out of it, and remembered that my steely determination and my trusty STIHL chainsaw would be my only ticket out of town this evening, but I must act fast. So I did.

And that's why I'm here to tell the story, and that's why you're there, sitting in your comfortable little chair, listening to it.

Posted by: Brian Williams at February 07, 2015 12:33 AM (UvR6d)

42 As a (very small) player in the Katrina response effort, I had the chance to see and hear what was going on and compare it to the tales the TV news guys were spinning. While I had started to turn away from TV news after Sept. 11, Katrina made me go cold turkey.

107 It's "Katyusha", not Katuyshka - but that's a transliteration/pronunciation thing, not a bit deal.

But, hmmm. Katyushas flying *under* his chopper? I think we've got some cannon-cockers around here who might know specifics, but unless you're almost over the launching area, seems unlikely a typical helo altitude would put you above a Katyusha's ballistic path.

108 Many, many moons ago, David Letterman used to do a bit with the studio audience in which he would go out into the audience and they would recount some story with Dave (such as the time the ran into a celebrity) and then once they finished their story, Dave would say, "But that's not all, correct" and a sign would flash on the screen saying "Writer's embellishment" and the person would read something silly as an add-on to the story.
Too Long, didn't read version. NBC should have "Writer's embellishment" flashing behind Williams everytime he reads the news.

Two things I always wanted to do:

1. It is possible to mount a .50 cal on the tailgate (although I've never seen it actually done). I always wanted to get up to altitude and put those M2 rounds on a target far, far away.

2. Drive a 1/4 ton out the tailgate while the Chinook was in forward motion.

127 And just as an aside, Katrina might be the most outrageous, complete, and archetypal example of media distortion (successful - most of the country has ingested the fairy tale).

Arguably the best federal disaster response in history (note: federal responses are a fairly recent thing, of course). Easily one of the worst, if not worst, and criminally incompetent response by the primary responders: local and state.

And yet. And yet - media distortion, with its critical partner Bush Admin. silence and passivity, succeeded in completely misinforming the country about the nature of the event, from a to z.

I watched the "coverage" (and the despicable, jaw-dropping crap going on in the public square about the events) from one of our war zones. We were stunned by the idiocy and distortion (and recall we were living the same distortion day in/day out on coverage of the war). Our local national employees - always hesitant to say anything critical about the US - sheepishly asked what the big deal was. A flood - a slow flood? With lots of warning? What was the big deal?

One of the data points that left me wondering what had happened to our country. Along with the idiotic hysteria about the war (not limited to moonbats and stupid, ignorant, suburban/coastal Dem voters), pretty much broke the bond for me.

Bush said that the CIA had intelligence that Saddam was trying to get and/or make WMDs. NDH, by distortion I was referring to how the media (with the SOP Bush Admin. passivity and silence) turned a disaster, criminally mishandled by those with the funding, resources, and legal authority to deal with it (city and state) into a "scandal" for the national govt. Which it wasn't. Not even a little bit. Not even close (and don't give me "FEMA trailer procurement" or whatever, we're talking about the actual response, during the disaster).

But the complete distortion. Gulfport - gone (not wet, not flooded - gone). Somehow, MS managed. Evacuation, etc. New Orleans self-evacuation was the largest evacuation in US history, if using person/miles/time period, probably one of the greatest in human history (East Prussia and eastern Germany in spring 1945 are the sorts of events at this level). Every failure of importance was a failure of citizens, local govt., and state govt. Would one in 100 Americans have understood that a week later?

So I'm referring to the comprehensive, utter failure to 1) provide the facts 2) provide enough context and background for the layman to make sense of the facts. Instead, a crude, North Korean-style propaganda/slander campaign was launched, with public figures saying outrageous nonsense as part of vile melodrama.

At an event honoring our military, he has no problem interjecting himself and his pretend heroics by assigning himself some of that valor that he knows he has none of. Which, through the magic of a clueless, gullible populace .... a despicable, lying, clueless press .... a contemptible, race-baiting, demagogic opposition party .... and a passive, silent administration - became a federal "scandal" - oh, and with racist over/under-tones.

177 NDH, don't forget the helicopters. From Pensacola to Morgan City the Feds had choppers in the air everywhere pulling people off of roofs and out of the water. Not, 24hrs later - while the winds were still at gale force. The coasties forgot to bring a media whore with them.

***

I spent about four days touring from Biloxi to past New Orleans. It hadn't started out that way but at about midnight I was driving I-10, road-tripping, when I got tired and pulled into Biloxi looking for a hotel room. It was pitch dark when I checked in then walked out of the hotel the next morning and realized that everything around it was gone.

It was still there, but it was lying in ruins.

This was in either April or May after the storm, so months later, and it was still a pile of rubble. There simply aren't enough work crews in all of America to clean up what had happened there.

So, I spent the next several days gawking in awe.

Driving I-10 through New Orleans is kinda like being on an el-train. You're up above it all and can see for a pretty good distance and, for as far as I could see, all I could see were houses with holes in the roof and SOS written on them. There were lots of other markings too, which I presume were from the search and rescue effort.

Had those brave men and women not been there rescuing when they were, you can bet the death toll would have been far, far higher.

179 @159 - Saddam had been, IIRC, shooting at the Northern Watch/Southern Watch patrols for a long time.

I said in 2003 and I'll say again now that this was a clear casus belli and never mind the WMD nonsense.

I'm not saying that we should have gone to war, but I will say that we failed to make the proper case for it, and we certainly failed to use sufficient force to occupy the place.

The French, among other weasels, were already beginning to treat the sanctions regime about the same way Obama treats US immigration law, so failing to act against Saddam at that time would have meant giving up on sanctions anyway.

And getting the fuel to the helos was quite a big deal. And yes, the Coasties did A LOT of work, heroic stuff, all out of the public eye.

I'm in Pennsylvania, and I lost power for three days after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. It was reported as the biggest outage in PECO history.

In the days afterwards, I saw power crews from all over the eastern part of the country. I would honk and wave when I saw them. I think it's very cool how the utilities cooperate and coordinate efforts in the wake of a disaster.

Too late to get into it, JEM, but I'd say we made far more than a sufficient case to remove the Iraqi regime. Though it might (might) have helped if the basic logic of pre-emption had been hammered home til everyone got it.

Might have also been nice to not just talk about (global consensus) intel estimates, but the unique recklessness of the Ba'ath regime. How it had defied - non-chalantly - every one of the three US ultimatums/warnings contained in the famous letter that For. Min. Aziz read but would not accept in Geneva. Warnings that contained, for the only time in history, a clear threat to use nuclear weapons in response.

And we had plenty of forces to occupy the place. Problem is, they weren't used intelligently (and the occupation was ended far too quickly, speaking of the actual non-sovereign period). Far too much war college, not enough war. The "surge" was a small augmentation of numbers, but a dramatic change in tactics. A change was that f***king obviously needed, and should have been used from the outset. And which worked quickly and fairly easily - duh - once implemented.

But, consistent with an era in which George Tenet kept his job and got the Medal of Freedom, Gen. Casey became Army COS. In WWII he would have been canned in 6 mos. his name would rhyme with "Fredendall".

When the derecheo hit southwest Virginia in 2012, we were without power for a week, and the crew that was working on our neighborhood on day 6 and 7 were from Houston, TX.

About 20 years earlier we had a huge ice storm, and one day I drove about 15 miles on the interstate and saw a line of utility trucks coming the opposite direction the whole time I was driving the 15 miles, and when I turned off, they were still coming.

Those line crews are pretty rugged hombres IMHO.

Since my comment sort of started this, let me clarify.

I am (obviously colorfully) saying that, given how amazingly clueless "educated", media-consuming, urban, coastal people often are about anything outside their personal experience, and how they as failed citizens have brought us to our current condition (occupant of the WH as symptom, not cause), it is surprising the country functions at all.

No reason to think the crews who fix utilities in disasters are anything but praiseworthy folks doing solid work.

It's NPR-listening, "educated", higher income types that have produced our situation, not salt-of-the-earth types.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 07, 2015 02:00 AM (afQnV)

198 Tarde is either a sock or else he misunderstood Jean's comment.

I don't recall the actual names of the utilities, but when I saw unfamiliar names on the trucks I looked them up and found that they were from North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and other states.

I'm sure PECO trucks travel to the South or Midwest when there are hurricanes or tornadoes.

222 NBC assisted Lyin Brian in his lies.

So this changes things, doesn't it?
They can't fire him for lying if they helped him to make those lies even more effective and believable.

So NBC is going to have to hemorrhage some major money to make him go away quietly.

But I think they know he's toast. So they're going to have to do whatever it takes to get rid of him.

223 So, there I was, chatting with Jerry and Joe in their studio. They were struggling to break into the comics business; none of their ideas were catching on. I knew they had the talent, but they just needed a little push, creatively.

I told them, "Well, hey, guys; why don't you just make a character based on me?"

So, they made a journalist character, named him Clark Kent, and had him do basically the same sort of things I've been doing all my life.

Oh, Jerry was a little skeptical at first. He grumbled, "Based on you, huh? Oh, I suppose we should call him Superman, then."

Well the joke was on him, because of course it was a major hit. I understand the character is still around today.

Probably Thursday and Friday were high ratings days for them, but if next week they start tanking hard and it doesn't look like it will rebound for a while then they will ditch him. Truth? Integrity? Appearances? Phhhhh. All they care about is Ratings and the Narrative. And if the ratings drop too much they can find some other monkey in a suit and tie to push the Narrative.

Personally I first watched Brian Williams on the JFK Jr. crash and I was astounded on how bad he was. His anchoring on MSNBC, of course, was just horrendous. He couldn't keep fact correct and basically just rambled and over sensationalized everything. Imagine Shep Smith on meth. I remember how most the experts he had in the studio would spend most of their air time correcting his blunders, when he wasn't talking over them, it was cringe worthy. I was always amazed when they plucked him out for the NBC anchor.

248 I spent most of the time watching the Katrina response being SO pissed they were focused on Nola and completely ignoring Mississippi, where it actually hit dead on. We went back to biloxi years after and it still looked a mess. They're only finally looking sort of normal again the last few years but those gorgeous houses and old trees are just gone, many of them.

We weren't able to get into Nola when I went down a couple weeks after the storm for disaster response but we did go to Slidell and that was truly Terrible.

I am. I also remember when Nick Fury was a Howling Commando and not an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Well at least 3.

Mornin yall!

251 I remember seeing but not reading (they seemed scary to me) Sgt Rock comic books. Lil Audrey & Riychie Rich was more my speed back then.

Btw, this is the second midnight post in a row from Comrade Ewok. Insomnia?

Posted by: @votermom DIY or die! at February 07, 2015 06:28 AM (cbfNE)

252 Nick Fury was a direct rip-off of Sgt Rock. I never understood why DC comics didn't sue.

Posted by: Vic at February 07, 2015 06:30 AM (wlDny)

253 Sgt. Rock here, reporting for duty.

Or coffee.

254 252 Vic,

DC felt sorry for Col. Fury...he became James Bond and then he became Samuel L Jackson...

Posted by: Sven10077 at February 07, 2015 06:35 AM (/4AZU)

255 248 Lea,

I was awed enough by Katrina's outer edge I was happy to turn around and head back west.

The media completely ignored Hurricane Rita b/c they wanted to exploit the 9th Ward....same reason they ignored MS...Gulfport looked like it had been bombed.

Posted by: Sven10077 at February 07, 2015 06:38 AM (/4AZU)

256 246 weirdflunkyontablet,

He's saying that although we're having a Jim Dandy of a time, the right needs to sue the pants off Comcast for having a biased liar in the anchor chair...

I think the right should lawfare the media.

257 NBD, as I too have looked down at the heart of darkness...

(ok, it was really the head at 5:30 after a loooong night of scotch and cigars, but hey, what's a tale or two between friends, amirite?)

259 You have to admit that the N.O. evacuation plan was great. Tell folks to get in their cars and drive away. Leave all those school buses in a low area. Don' use them to pick up those without cars.

266 "what's a tale or two between friends, amirite?"

BTW, that describes the state of the (collapsing) media today - "hey, we're all among friends, so I can spout whatever BS I wish" is the norm...

Keep it up, lunkheads.

267 266 anon a mouse,

The US media is acting on a war time propaganda footing and has been since November of 2000. That means their job is to lie for the "war effort." They were a little confused by the events of September 2001 but snapped back into focus on the REAL enemy by Jan 2002.

Their war ain't our war, but they pursue it with the same level of zeal we engage in our war.

268 Morning snowflakes!

I'm feeling extra special today so I want to go exercise my white male privilege and crusade some transnormative Muslims of color by refusing to patronize their children's lemonade stand or something equally heinous. Anyone else up for some 21st century Christian oppression?

Now it can be told - Brian Williams is the last surviving member of the H.M.S. Hood where, not surprisingly, he stared right down the barrels of the guns of the German battleship Bismarck, which sank the Hood.

274 Good morning!

Lying, preening douche nozzles like Brian Williams have no sense of shame, so castigating him and mocking him won't have much effect. On the other hand, castigating and mocking his employer for holding out the lying preening douche nozzle as the 'face' of their network will.

But I have to admit I have enjoyed reading the posts over the last few days. The wit and snark is just awesome.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at February 07, 2015 07:38 AM (60Vyp)

275 no shit boys, there I was, pinned down in a hail of Jap fire on the deck of the HMS Hood being attacked by the Nazi bastards that bombed Pearl Harbor, as they were dropping nuclear depth charges on the ships Prado deck and Sun Lounge... My only was to distract them, so I peeled open my own daughters little brown starfish and ran her up the yardarm. Everyone saluted and I made good my escape.

285 Analysis indicates Brian Williams has had a significant number of homosexual encounters for which he is ashamed. By fabricating stories suggesting heroism and bravery on his part. he allows himself to repress the memory of his shame. Note how the stories usually contain "rockets" and "guns". The tale of seeing the body floating face down in NOLA probably indicates he was having anal sex in his hotel room during the storm.
I suspect Brian Williams should be put on suicide watch as he is most probably being drawn inexorably by his shame towards the suckling of a .45 long slide...with laser sightings.
