Pilot Retracts Corroboration for Williams' Story

Krell was a pilot in Iraq, and met Williams. But another pilot, Chris Simeone, disputed that he was Williams' pilot on the flight in question. Simeone said he was the pilot, and Williams lied about the encounter.

We didn't get hit by anything but dust, Simeone said.

Well, now CNN's Twitter Witness is withdrawing his previous claims.

Brian Stetler, who came across Krell when Krell contacted him on Twitter, now says he questions his own memory.

On Friday morning, Krell told me that "the information I gave you was true based on my memories, but at this point I am questioning my memories."

On Thursday night, two others, Christopher Simeone and Allan Kelly, told The New York Times that they -- not Krell -- had piloted Williams' helicopter, and that "they did not recall their convoy of helicopters coming under fire."
Simeone, Kelly and a third soldier, Joseph Miller, also spoke with The Omaha World-Herald. The newspaper wrote this:
"Simeone and Kelly said only two helicopters were in their group, from Company B of the 159th Aviation. They said Krell was piloting the first helicopter. Simeone and Kelly were pilots on the second Chinook, and Miller was in their crew."
The paper continued: "All three said Williams was riding with them, not with Krell. They all said neither bird took fire at any time that day."
I text-messaged Krell before dawn, and asked him to call me as soon as he woke up. He replied with this text:
"Good morning. The information I gave you was true based on my memories, but at this point I am questioning my memories that I may have forgotten or left something out."
He said, "For the past 12 years I have been trying to forget everything that happened in Iraq and Afghanistan; now that I let it back, the nightmares come back with it, so I want to forget again."
He concluded, "The men in that article deserve respect. Please understand."
The NBC P.R. person now says the network can't confirm which person piloted Williams' helicopter.

Stetler also explains how he came to have Krell as an interview subject -- a question I kept asking him yesterday. (I got no answer.)

But an executive told the LA Times that Brian Williams will face no consequences whatsoever for this -- no suspension, no firing, not even a penalty.

Well, there will be one penalty. They may stop letting him go on Jimmy Fallon to Slow Jam the News.

No really. You think that's a joke. That is really in the mix.

You know who's happy about this?

If the network continues to keep a serial fabricator on board, it will convince many of those who still buy what the press is selling that something is fundamentally wrong. That would be a fantastic development, because something is fundamentally wrong. The self-described watchdogs have instead become the left’s gatekeepers. The sooner everyone appreciates that, the better it will be for all.

And that's what the LA Times is saying their plan is.

Maybe this is a trial balloon to see how the rest of the industry would greet this decision -- will the rest of the media decide it's best to protect Williams, as they're all dishonest incompetents who could be fired for similar reasons, or will they insist on this childish game of pretending they have integrity and give a f*ck about the truth?

How many cargo helicopter pilots suffer from this? I understand that stress hits in many ways, and direct combat is not a requirement. But some MOSs experience this more than others.

Williams has the highest rated network news program. I imagine they really want to find a way to retain their ratings, with or without Williams.However, a new anchor would likely take a hit in ratings and it's an unknown.
Also, it's not like they haven't ridden out the storm with other NBC/MSNBC "talent" messing up.

Spot on, on both counts. We inadvertently caught the network news on night while traveling on vacation, and we were shocked by how fluffy it was. There was a segment on the Tiger Mom, then one on Berlusconi's affair, some other one of similar ilk, and then concluded with one about some grandmom knitting caps for the poor.

That's it. Terrorism, the national debt, war, pffft. Amazing.

The problem with the 19th Amendment is that too many women feel rather than think. That news show was obviously aimed at them.

And Tom Brokaw has called for his firing.

What are their options now?

1) Stick their heads in the sand, and hope the rest of the MSM shuts up about it. Business as usual.

Except it won't be. Because everyone knows. So no more appearances on Letterman or Fallon. Because they, being "with it" entertainment guys, can't afford to play along and lose their own "with it" status. No, the public and the in crowd will at best just find him cringeworthy, and at worst make him a mockable object (which has already begun).

2) Fire him for being dishonest. Bring in a new, "trusted" (LOL) face for their franchise.

But, he wasn't the only NBC news guy being dishonest. Uh-oh. How do they handle the others? Because that goes all the way to the top.

He wasn't a pedophile, but this to me seems near a Paterno-esque situation. They have no good options due to the cover-up.

Couldn't happen to a better bunch of "ends justify the means" believers.

For over 11 years this guy and his crew have been lying about one thing or another THAT WE KNOW OF.

We also knew they were lying about other stuff on air but couldn't prove it because it wasn't as clear.

If they'll lie about big things that are confirmable, they'll lie about the little stuff that no one can be sure of.

You know he's lied about something else in his career. A lot of something else's.

And the majority of them will all be either an advancement in some way of his prestige or persona OR the agendae that he supports.

I'm guessing he wishes he was like that Jordanian pilot. At least HIS torture is over. Williams has more to go yet and his ignominy will be long lasting.

The LNP, once in office, fixes those two problems.

And then the wheels start to fall off, the PM can't get his ministers to sing from the same budget hymnal, he starts tilting at windmills with aboriginal bills and Aussie knighthood for Brit royalty that just leave every LNP voter going 'WTF?' and he's got a chief of staff who just pisses everyone off.

So now it seems his party would like nothing better than to dispose of him, but the heir apparent is a Goldman Sachs alumnus and committed warmist who's not much liked in some quarters of the party.

395 Interesting that Stetler doesn't contact Stars and Stripes to see if they know the name(s) of the pilot(s)? They did the original story and one would assume that some information had been trimmed from the published story. Yet Stetler claims he tried to contact the crewmen directly, more difficult I would imagine then starting with the Stars and Stripes who might even have the info they need. Like he wanted to try to shoot holes in the S and S story by going to their source and muddying the waters. And now he 'comes clean', hoping Williams is now taken out before CNN's complicity in trying to make the story go away is fully understood.

402 I said I hope he stays last night on some thread. Not that it is that important, either way, but Williams remaining as the face of NBC News - with his integrity and seriousness (cough) comically shredded - can only be good.

It's a shame that the smattering of solid folks scattered around the big networks (and there are a few) can't just come together and form a real news network. Management and "corporate" are far beyond salvation (in the wires as well as TV, and even most print). But there are still good soldiers in the field.

I have war stories illustrating these rifts that are seared, seared into my memory.

We've all heard that said and it's verifiably true.

Lying is a risky practice.

Especially lies with detail and that include others even if not by name.

Over time it becomes harder to keep track of what was said about this or that lie. Soon confusion and contradiction are obvious.

Eventually the anxiety over being exposed and the exasperation at the burgeoning questions will usually lead to either a blanket denial and refusal to speak about the lie anymore or a confession that includes some exculpatory explanation on why the lie took place and continued to be reinforced.

Other than the permanent (and it's permanent no matter what happens to Williams in the future) damage to his reputation, he's pretty much set for the rest of his life.

He's unlikely to face being homeless in some shelter eking an existence of abject poverty and squalor.

So I have no pity or sympathy for his plight.
