Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | VARIETY SOURCE: NBC EXECS TOLD WILLIAMS YEARS AGO TO STOP TELLING CHOPPER WHOPPERIs this true? It's a single source. Then again, how many informants do you expect to come forward? If it's true, we are closer to the end than to the beginning.
What makes Williams' admission worse, according to one person familiar with the situation, is that he had been counseled in the past by senior NBC News executives to stop telling the story in public. The advice, this person said, was not heeded. One person familiar with current NBC News operations disputed that information. Williams' version of the plane story has never been allowed in NBC News programs, according to three people familiar with the unit. Indeed, in a March, 2003, episode of "Dateline," Williams described the helicopter trip accurately. "On the ground, we learned the Chinook ahead of us was almost blown out of the sky," he said while narrating a report. From CNN:
"Helicopter pilot tells CNN Williams 'messed up': Rich Krell, who was piloting the Chinook that Williams was on, tells a slightly different story than the crew members who spoke to Stars and Stripes. "Some of things he's said are not true. But some of the things they're saying against him are not true either," said Krell, who spoke exclusively to CNN on Thursday morning. Krell explained that, contrary to Williams' comments in the past, there were three helicopters flying in close formation, not four. "One of the birds broke down, so we were a flight of three," Krell said. "We were hauling metal bridges." Williams was in the back of Krell's aircraft along with three other NBC staffers. Krell referred to his Chinook as the "second bird" in the formation. The "first bird," right in front of the "second bird," was struck by the RPG. Due to his seat in the back, Williams was most likely unable to witness the RPG attack, Krell said. All three of the helicopters were hit by small arms fire, Krell said, supporting Williams' past claims about that. "The bridge expansions we were hauling took most of the hits," Krell said. The three Chinooks took evasive maneuvers. Krell's helicopter dropped off its payload, then met up with the other two about 45 minutes later. That may explain why the other crew members told Stars and Stripes that Williams arrived in the area later. Krell said of Williams, "Yeah, he messed up some things and said some things he shouldn't have. I [first] heard it a few years ago. ... Actually one of my flight engineers said, 'Did you hear him say that? Wasn't he on our bird?'" Krell didn't seem overly bothered by Williams' revisionist history -- he chalked it up to wartime theatrics. "After a while, with combat stories, you just go 'Whatever,'" he said." "The agenda here was dressing up a soft, delicate little boy into a the sort of iron-stubbled man who looks like he belongs on a battlefield," Ace writes. Part of the reason the revelations about Williams have been met with particular glee among conservative bloggers could be that the NBC anchor has been outspoken in his criticism of online journalism standards in the past." Krell didn't seem overly bothered by Williams' revisionist history -- he chalked it up to wartime theatrics. "After a while, with combat stories, you just go 'Whatever,'" he said." See, that's the thing about "wartime theatrics", the people who were actually there get to dismiss that shit as "whatever". They get to do that, because they have a basis from which to judge. Meanwhile chairborne Rangers eat that shit up and believe every word. That's the problem. And that's the dynamic Williams had always counted on. Fraud. Is the NBC Brian Williams audience actually a "news audience"? Or just slack-jawed blank-eyed infotainment consumers? Posted by: torquewrench The average age of CBS news viewers is something like 82. OOOH good idea for a new board game.
GET A CLUE Where you have to figure out who is sabotaging your career. Is it your boss or his/her secretary? Maybe the wife is calling and dishing to your team members. Could be the underpaid new guy who's looking for a full time job after college. First select a group of cards and these will be the Skeletons. Certain spots on the board allow others to take a peek. Then those skeletons surface at the most inopportune times. you have to figure out who's doing the telling and how much they know. The winner is the one who destroys your rep OR you manage to get them fired for something YOU did. Fun fun fun for all. I've tried to be sanguine about that... but it's not true. As Pope, every political comment he makes is at least colored by, if not directly a commentary on, what he believes about Catholic doctrine. But you're seizing on one part of what you see as his theological argument without considering the depth of hai argument.
1) I'm under no obligation to do so. It's not my fault that he "sucks as spokesman." 2) The theological argument falls flat, even when deeply considered. Actually, the more deeply considered it is, the flatter it falls. His statement (and his desire to walk across the border with some illegals) is incredibly shallow. 3) I am by no means saying that Catholicism approves of illegal immigration or open borders. I am saying that this Pope does, and his position AS Pope brings the Catholic Church's political weight to the table. I guess I sorta know some bits of Catholic doctrine (yes, was a bad CCD student in the day), but only thing that interests me is practical impact on secular matters. Church support (and not just this flavor of church, obviously) for amnesty, "health care", and other indefensibly stupid and disastrous public policies is the "so what" of it all. So why would a supposedly educated, supposedly Latin American, supposedly Catholic human being ever, ever say such stupid things re Mexico and the US? Mexico is the most famous anti-(Catholic) clerical state evah, and its disastrous dysfunctional social system and governance have been perpetuated far beyond their design life through "venting" to the US (exporting surplus labor and criminality, raking in remittances). So this pope is a big supporter of Mexico's anti-clerical, socially oppressive pathologies? Hmmm. Posted by: rhomboid at February 05, 2015 04:45 PM (afQnV) 553

398 OT/ which has absolutely nothing to do with Brian Williams, but the Pope said today the conditions on the Mexican/ American border are deplorable and we should all welcome them here with open arms and stop discriminating against them...
To be fair, this is not just a Catholic problem/viewpoint. People were shocked in my state, myself included, when the Mormon church leaders sided with the changes to law that make it easier for illegals to live and work here. But it made sense once I looked into it. A church, whether Mormon or Catholic, is about god's work, not man's, and finding saving souls is top priority, borders mean little to them. In fact it is easier in some ways to proselytize in America than other countries, so why not have the sheep migrate here? Easier to find them and return them to the fold. That being said, Mormon doctrine also teaches in its articles of faith, "we believe in being subject to...presidents...in obeying, honoring and sustaining the law." That flies directly in the face of legally welcoming in illegal citizens with open arms. Which do you honor, the law or the missionary work, when both are at odds? Sigh. It's a funny puzzle, because most conservative Utahns are fiercely anti amnesty and illegal immigration, but also Mormon. We'll see how all this shapes out I guess. Just for giggles. Chance that a general "appeal to apply Christian virtues of mercy and compassion", in the context of mass illegal immigration and a top-down jihad to impose amnesty, could be interpreted in any way other than as moral backing for amnesty and moral opposition to any/all enforcement measures that lead to the slightest inconvenience for law-breakers:

And to the extent you will find them, they have very real safety concerns. Of which the Pope is obviously ignorant. But I don't think he's saying that, because he wouldn't have been someone the College of Cardinals would have selected as Pope if he were that vacuous. What he seems to be saying is that America is full of meanies because we don't particularly like the invasion of illegals (largely from the south). Never is a word said about the illegals maybe not trying to enter a country (obeying earthly authorities) illegally. Never is a word said to Mexico about their own immigration laws, or about making their own country a place with sufficient opportunity such that its citizens don't have to look elsewhere to feed their families. Understandable. I am the every Sunday variety myself. And holy days of obligation. I never disliked Benedict honestly. I think it took a great amount of courage to do what he did. And, if he truly felt he could not lead the Church any longer, whole heartedly, then he absolutely did the right thing for himself and for the Church. We wouldn't need someone as young as Benedict phoning it in until he kicked it. He saw his limitations and acknowledged them. And, I truly respect him for that. Suffice to say that the Pope is concerned with souls, and you're concerned with politics. The two are often mutually opposed.
And yet, never in the Bible will you find behavior (which falls solidly in the realm of "the political") divorced from salvation ("the soul"). I know you're not defending the Pope on this, because I more or less know your stance. My point is that the Pope's stance on this (as someone who *isn't* Catholic) seems a) needlessly political while also b) being not as aligned with the actual teaching of Christ and the apostles as it could be. Encouraging someone to break the law (temporal authorities and all that) and encouraging others to encourage someone to break the law does not seem like something Christianity would teach. I do not believe you can divorce the political from the religious. Where the law is in conflict with Christianity, it is fairly clear we are supposed to defy the law (and accept any resulting legal penalties). Where there is no relation between the law and Christianity, we are expected *as Christians* to obey the law. So calling on people to show mercy (that they were going to show anyway) is silly, and (in the vein of "better a millstone were chained to his neck and he be thrown in the sea") dangerous to encourage people to break a law which is not morally or theologically opposed to Christianity. So if it were purely greed and graft I think I'd sniff that out. But from what I see and hear on the ground, as a regular church member, the local leaders and teachers I get to interact with regularly really DO see it as a chance to do good, and an opportunity to convert people to the gospel that would otherwise never hear it. Their intentions aren't as depraved as you imply. And tithing aside, which passes through different channels, the leaders of our local areas don't get paid for their service, it's not like they are in it for the money personally. But despite their seemingly noble intentions, I still find the church's softpedaling on amnesty worrisome. Posted by: LizLem at February 05, 2015 05:12 PM (yRwC8) 649

My beef with the Pope?
Jesus never said "Give Caesar all your money and rely on him to take care of the poor." Francis confuses private charity, which God demands of all of us, with government spending. In matters of faith and morals, I will listen to what he has to say. In matters of economics he reminds me of Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill toured the U.S. in the '30s giving speeches. On economic policy, the guy was CLUELESS. He didn't know anything. Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at February 05, 2015 05:14 PM (V70Uh) 656

Why is that he only addresses this to the US and no other country? Posted by: Soona at February 05, 2015 05:14 PM (/HX7u) Good question. And of course, to ask it is to answer it: the Pope comes down on the U.S. and not Mexico because it has nothing to do with saving souls. It has everything to do with the perspective that is common among like minded leftists, like this Pope, that the U.S. is culpable PRECISELY because we are rich. And Mexico is not, because it's poor, so Mexico gets to impose itself on the U.S., and we're supposed to take it. You know what we call that line of thought? Communism. Rich Krell told Jake Tapper he was the pilot and Chris Simeone from the second formation claims he was Williams pilot. Both can't be right. Strange. Posted by: lowandslow at February 05, 2015 05:22 PM (+ebSh) 687
In matters of economics he reminds me of Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill toured the U.S. in the '30s giving speeches. On economic policy, the guy was CLUELESS. He didn't know anything.

Going back to the thread topic....
the part that amuses me is that NBC for so long has distanced themselves from MSNBC out of sheer embarrassment. "NBC News is NOT MSNBC" How many times have we heard that? And now, MSNBC is distancing themselves from NBC out of sheer embarrassment. Half of them are acting like they don't even know who Brian Williams is. "Brian Williams, who's that guy?" whistling under their breath. The fact that MSNBC would find themselves above anybody, and would want to distance theirselves is just absolute hilarity. And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God--he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.
Yea, and there shall be many which shall teach after this manner, false and vain and foolish doctrines, and shall be puffed up in their hearts, and shall seek deep to hide their counsels from the Lord; and their works shall be in the dark. in Christ there is no East or West, His kingdom is not of this world, borders are earthly, not divine, and we are called first to love God and our neighbors as ourselves -- all this has nothing to do with nations and borders, remember Samaria
at the same time, we are not fools, we are made to use our reason not just our feewings, and many matters are for prudential judgment, not explicit command and obedience -- and there is space between caesar and christ Pope Francis is asking us to look into our hearts to see what is possible and what is selfish -- he's right to do this, and as others have said, he should ask all nations the same question I think he is pastoral at heart, not an intellectual, and not remotely systematic -- he sees the world as a battlefield and the Church as a field hospital and he is deliberately careless of how he will be used by all those pushing agendas which is vexing to all of us who see how easily goodness and truth is scorned and abused in our sickened societies Posted by: Feh at February 05, 2015 05:33 PM (g/zj9) 723

LizLem, nothing against Mormon, leader or commoner, or against the church per se. Should have phrased my comment more broadly, and harshly. Religious inspiration cannot be substituted for law, common sense, fairness, and constitutional government. Otherwise we have Heaven's Gate and Scientology running society - or their equivalents (however large and "mainstream"). A sincere desire to save souls, if it countenances lawlessness, is no more tolerable than any other criminal impulse.
As to "helping the poor" - economic illiteracy and authoritarian impulses are bad guides to public policy, whether the proponent wears birkenstocks, or a red silk skull cap, and no matter how deep and rich the moral narcissism clothing them. So, if a religious "doctrine" or teaching lead to policies irrefutablybad for "the poor" (like lawlessness, mass illegal immigration, welfare, confiscation), then the real harm being done by the do-gooder cannot be excused. The moral calculus is the exact inverse of that with which the "morally" inspired social engineers flatter themselves. Posted by: rhomboid at February 05, 2015 05:37 PM (afQnV) 729

Incentive structures disincentivize the behavior they punish. Williams is being punished for a Centrist lie. All people comprehend Centrist lies and that Centrist lies are taboo. But Williams is not being punished for his Leftist lies. The Leftist agenda is not being disincentivized. Tepidity is not productive.
