Dashcam Video Captures Moment Taiwanese Plane Struck Highway and Plowed Into River

What's amazing is that there are some survivors:

At least 23 people were killed in the crash, and more than a dozen are still unaccounted for, according to the Associated Press. 15 of the 58 people on board have been rescued.

Incredible video.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler: This Is How We Will Ensure
Net Neutrality | WIRED www.wired.com/2015/02/fcc-chairman-wheeler-net-neutrality/

Congress wisely gave the FCC the power to update its rules to keep pace with innovation. Under that authority my proposal includes a general conduct rule that can be used to stop new and novel threats to the internet. This means the action we take will be strong enough and flexible enough not only to deal with the realities of today, but also to establish ground rules for the as yet unimagined.

Posted by: Chesley Sullenberger at February 04, 2015 12:31 PM (nFdGS)

61 ATC recordings apparently indicate the plane did a Mayday call about engine failure. Look at the still photos, the left hand engine you can see the blades of the prop which might mean that engine was the one that lost power.

Now look at those buildings on the other side of the highway. You as the pilot just took off with a full fuel load and plenty of passengers. Engine dies. Which means you are supposed to pull back to V2 speed for the plane and try to nurse it to altitude. But there are those buildings in front of you.

Which leaves trying to bank and avoid. Notice the graph on the Airline Reporter link. See how the airspeed dips and does not quite exceed 100 while the altitude plummets like a stone.

You're sure of this? And is that at all times? Or just level flight?
The guy was taking off. I don't know what the timing was, but he apparently had suffcient lift to become airborne, followed by probable evasive ation to avoid plowing into buildings, then clipping a car and a roda and then down.

Posted by: a Moron at February 04, 2015 12:33 PM (Spluw)

73 To me it looks very much like a Vmc (minimum controllable airspeed) roll.

Twin engine aircraft loses an engine, if the airspeed drops below the minimum controllable airspeed there loss of control and the the aircraft rolls inverted. In a twin engine aircraft the first order of business after an engine failure is to pitch nose down and maintain airspeed above Vmc. Before the crash the aircraft looks slow and is clearly pitched nose up. Perhaps they were trying to clear the buildings and just didn't have enough airspeed to accomplish it.

This is why I am directing the DOT to immediately draw up guidelines to ensure manufacturers of all vehicles in the American market are properly protected from this type of incident. And price added to each vehicle is no object! For the children! For safety sake! It shall be done! so sayeth me.

184 Chicago used to have a small airport for general aviation right on the lakefront, I mean on a little spit of land right in the water. Meigs Field.

It was dangerous as hell. Meigs paralleled the shoreline, so the prevailing winds blew across the runway, leading to many crashes and deaths.

The former mayor tried for years to no avail to get it closed down, from a safety standpoint of flying in and out of a dangerous environment, to the risk of a plane crashing into a downtown building.

Finally he went all Chicago-Way on it, and had it bulldozed one Sunday in the middle of the night.

Heh.

198 Ultimate indictment of Asian air safety is Dynasty 611.

Pilots do a tail strike. Gouges fuselage with deep scratches. Taiwan repair crew puts on a doubler plate and signs it off as being in compliance with Boeing.

22 years later the 747 crashes with massive loss of life. Turns out the 'repair' was never at Boeing standards. The doubler plate barely covered the damage. One year before the accident photos were taken and the plane was scheduled to be repaired. The plane crashed four months before the schedule.

Study of the photographs of the repair showed this brown film seeping out from around the doubler plate. This was a year before the accident. The brown film was tar from cigarette smoking. Yep the passengers nicotine had leaked outside the plane. The final kicker, the airline had banned smoking more than five years before the photos were taken.

211 Inhofe and his aides drew up 54 notecards -- one for every Republican in the Senate -- urging them to vote for the amendment, which Democrats were putting forward as an addition to the Keystone XL pipeline bill.

The card said:

Inhofe recommends a Yes vote because

1. The climate has always been changing and

2. There is no consensus that human actions and emissions levels have significant, negative impacts on global climate change

Inhofe informed only Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) of his plan, fearing Democrats would revise the amendment if they got wind of it.

"If they started thinking about it, he could have reworded it in such a way that it could have been a totally different thing," Inhofe said.

When the time came for the vote, Inhofe approached Whitehouse on the Senate floor and told him he wanted to become a co-sponsor.

"You should have seen the look on his face," said the Inhofe aide.

Inhofe reasoned that the climate has always changed, and said on the Senate floor that there is "biblical evidence" supporting that view.

Whitehouse, who is co-chairman of a bicameral climate change caucus, acknowledged the move took him by surprise but told The Hill he wouldn't go back and change the amendment, even if he could.

Inhofe's "little trick of twisting the rhetoric a bit" gave Republicans the political cover they needed to vote for the amendment, Whitehouse said.

Free concerts are held there a few times during the summer.

There is no development, it's a park.

And while the former mayor (of whom I am NOT a fan and in fact think he ought to be in the cell next to Blago) probably didn't care about the general aviation fans who regularly died off Meigs Field, he did care about those GA pilots veering into a downtown building.

Especially after the incident in NYC when a GA plane flew into an apartment building.

aviation right on the lakefront, I mean on a little spit of land right
in the water. Meigs Field.

It was dangerous as hell. Meigs paralleled the shoreline, so the
prevailing winds blew across the runway, leading to many crashes and
deaths.

The former mayor tried for years to no avail to get it closed down,
from a safety standpoint of flying in and out of a dangerous
environment, to the risk of a plane crashing into a downtown building.

Finally he went all Chicago-Way on it, and had it bulldozed one Sunday in the middle of the night.

Heh.

312 Pro tip for SF Bay Area television stations: if someone calls you up and volunteers the names of the flight crew, fact check them first before broadcasting.

Also, kudos to the pilot for avoiding a lot of population on the ground and finding a safer place to lay it down. He may have saved the lives of a lot of people by picking a better option than others on short notice. I don't know the final count of how many on board lived and how many died, but I suspect there are some people who lived who owe him their lives.

313 Study of the photographs of the repair showed this brown film seeping out from around the doubler plate. This was a year before the accident. The brown film was tar from cigarette smoking. Yep the passengers nicotine had leaked outside the plane.

It has always cracked me up that vast numbers of Asian people will eat and drink the nastiest things for health reasons; and then turn around and chain smoke unfiltered, full-tar cigarettes. This often starts in the pre-teen years.

325 Scientists slow the speed of light
Eh. I'll see it when I believe it. A couple of weeks old, btw. [rdbrewer]

Actually these types of experiments have been going on for a bit longer than that.

Slow light at wiki:
"In 1998, Danish physicist Lene Vestergaard Hau led a combined team from Harvard University and the Rowland Institute for Science which succeeded in slowing a beam of light to about 17 meters per second, and researchers at UC Berkeley slowed the speed of light traveling through a semiconductor to 9.7 kilometers per second in 2004. Hau later succeeded in stopping light completely, and developed methods by which it can be stopped and later restarted. This was in an effort to develop computers that will use only a fraction of the energy of today's machines.

In 2005, IBM created a microchip that can slow down light, fashioned out of fairly standard materials, potentially paving the way toward commercial adoption."

The guys from the tower were already at the FBO to greet me, got a good ass chewing about the crosswind limit and why the tower was closed. Made my mea culpas then asked if I could take off since the hard part of landing was over, they said sure and let me on my way. Good times.

That plane was a year old.

I don't see any flaps in that video, I have no idea what engine-out procedure is in an ATR72 but book says it won't fly at 100kt IAS clean and it's unlikely he had room/time to do much else. It may be that when the data's in the pilot looks pretty good for having even gotten over the buildings.

Video says a faulty left engine was changed in Macau, wonder if they changed the engine and missed the real problem in the fuel plumbing.

368 OT, now for my complaint of the day: I'm reading The War That Ended Peace by Margaret MacMillan, a history of the events and attitudes leading up to WWI. I'm on a chapter discussing Irish Home Rule as one of the events shackling the British government in early 1914. I quote:

In March 1914 the crisis took an even more serious turn. The House of Commons had passed the Home Rule bill twice and the House of Lords, dominated as it was by Unionist peers, rejected it each time. Asquith suggested a compromise - keeping the six counties of Ulster out of the area for Home Rule for the time being - but his opponents refused to consider it. Indeed, there was a move in the Lords to put pressure on the givernment by rejecting the bill to authorize the existence of the army, which had been passed without debate every year since 1688. (There is a parallel in recent American politics with the refusal of the Republicans to allow the customary approval of an increased debt ceiling for the government so that it can carry on borrowing the funds it needs for its operations).

Dammit! Thanks, bitch, for wrenching me completely out of the book in order to get your little dig in at those nasty Rethuglicans.

392 Is it just me...do you notice how few cars on on the road and yours is the one that gets hit. Very unlucky.

Greek. Ammo?
I know they've got a national arms manufacturer. Hellenic Arms. Other than that I've no idea if it's any good. Is it?

395 The solution here, is uncrashable planes.

396 193 My hubby was an AF test pilot back in the day. Said a turboprop is capable of flying with only one engine, but complicated. Said Pilot needs to turn away from the stall, not bank into it, using max opposite rudder and full power to unaffected prop.

...in case any of you are flying a turboprop anytime soon.

Most important rule of engine failure. Never turn into the direction of the failed engine.

Well, there is an interesting development concerning the narrative of Chris Kyle's death.

398 @396 - the plane is going to WANT to turn that direction on its own, and the degree to which it gets away with it is dependent on whether whatever automated systems on board feather the prop for you (or maybe you're fortunate to have an octopus on meth in the right seat to do all the switch-and-lever stuff rightfuckingnowgoddammit while you try to fly the plane), how fast you're going and the attitude, weight, etc. of the plane (in theory something like an ATR ought to have enough control authority to keep the plane from turning into the windmilling engine, but heavy and slow ain't gonna help) etc.

It looks like whatever failed in the first place this guy was trading airspeed for altitude to get over the building, he achieved that but ran out a bit too soon to save the plane. Might have been worse, I think, if it'd belly-flopped onto the bridge and broken up there.

massive problem with insurance fraud

Insurance fraud is becoming a thing here as well. I have a dashcam on my Eldorado. The cost $50 to $100 depending on home many cameras are built in.

Cops suddenly become ultra-polite when they notice the camera.
