4 Purely as speculation looking at the dash camera footage it does look like one engine was producing less power than the other engine. In this case the left engine looks to be the one that lost power.

Passenger planes are designed to be able to still take off after an engine loss. However in this case the pilot has banked into the dead engine. Apparently to avoid hitting buildings. If so, a truly gutsy call on the part of the pilots.

And here at Airliner Reporter is a picture of the taxi that was hit by debris from the plane. Remember that guy from Desert Storm called the luckiest man alive for having missed getting hit by a smart bomb? I think he will have to move over. This site also has a graphic showing airspeed and altitude of last flight along with path of plane.

17 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

Today's story is about 20th Century-Fox head honcho Darryl Zanuck and the great screenwriter Ben Hecht: it seems that, one day, Zanuck decided that a script about to go into production needed a little goosing and the only man for the job was Hecht.

It took a while to track the writer down, but finally he was traced. "He's bound for New York in two days," Hecht's secretary finally told Zanuck. "But if you want, he'll work on your script on the train all the way from Pasadena to Grand Central Station."

Zanuck had much experience with Hecht. Dryly, he asked, "And what does he want for this labor of love."

"Mr. Hecht says he has a fondness for full, round sums,"
was the answer. "The price he asks is one hundred thousand dollars."

Zanuck was silent for a moment. "Call him back," he ordered, "and ask him how much he'll take to work on the script as far as Kansas City."

One of the scripts Hecht wrote was 1938s Nothing Sacred, based on his own play Hazel Flagg (which was turned into a musical in 1953, closing after only 190 performances). It starred Carole Lombard as a small-town girl diagnosed with radium poisoning.

So here is the lovely Lombard:

21 n its first response, Jordan executed Sajida al-Rishawi and Ziad al-Karbouly, two Iraqis linked to al-Qaida, government spokesman Mohammed al-Momani said. Another official said they were executed by hanging.

The executions took place at Swaqa prison about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the Jordan's capital, Amman. At sunrise, two ambulances carrying the bodies of al-Rishawi and al-Karbouly drove away from the prison with security escorts. Authorities said they'd be buried later in Jordan.

37 Sajida al-Rishawi, in a few short weeks it will be spring. The snows of winter will flow away, the ice will vanish, the air will become soft and balmy. The annual miracle of the years will awaken and come to pass.
But you will not be there.
The rivulet will run its soaring course to the sea. The timid desert flowers will put forth their tender shoots. The glorious valleys in this imperial domain will blossom as the rose.
Still you will not be there.
From every treetop, some wildwood songster will carol his mating song. Butterflies will sport in the sunshine. The gentle breeze will tease the tassels of the wild grasses and all nature will be glad.
But you will not be there to enjoy it.
Because I command the sharif to lead you away to some remote spot, swing you by the neck from a knotting bough of some sturdy oak and let you hang until dead.
And then Sajida al-Rishawi, I further command that such officer retire quickly from you

196 I live in a neighborhood that's like eight years old. We have no liberty even though we dropped a pile a jack to live here. We do, however, have a planning committee, an architectural committee, a water committee, etc. There's probably a dog poop committee I don't know about, so I walk my Shepherd (who craps like Secretariat) through a green belt and out to the pastures off a dirt road behind us just to relieve him. Takes me 20-30 minutes, rain or shine, twice a day. Dog loves it though, and I do too when the weather's nice, but we've had some pretty interesting encounters with mother nature and her fauna back there.

205 Fen, didn't mean to sound quite so serious. Our personal and family situation has been desperate, and worsening, for a decade, so it's more of a lifestyle than a situation. Don't talk about it much. Fail is boring.

I keep looking for a way out of the hole I have dug myself into that doesn't involve digging myself in deeper as I always have, but that sort of harks to that definition of insanity, as if you assigned Obama to fix the problems he caused - yeah, that'll work.

"Show me the Way" may work in Spirit, to bring personal peace and defeat despair, but doesn't give handy workable worldly answers, at least not so far in my experience. Illustration: That scene in Wonderful Life where George Bailey asks the angel for eight thousand dollars. "We don't use money where I come from," says Clarence. "Well, it comes in real handy down here," says George. Clarence's reply: "Oh, tut tut tut!"

You know how they say, even God can't fix stupid? I'm kind-of hoping the All-Knowing One can, or at least can have enough mercy on his foolish children to spare a clue. Something more than just "oh, tut tut tut!" would be nice.

But I'm just rambling, don't take me seriously. No matter what my situation's like, I don't have to look far to see my fellow child of God - including dear relations - in straits so worse that they make mine into shallow First World Problems by contrast. Perspective is good!

Did I write all that? Whew. Surely Ben is up by now.

Hunter would not say which part of 'Unforgiven' the king quoted, but noted it was where Eastwood's character describes how he is going to deliver his retribution. There is a scene in the picture in which Eastwood's character, William Munny, says, 'Any man I see out there, I'm gonna kill him. That is not even a decade away. There is no way on this planet that we as a Country can service $18+ Trillion in debt paying 4% interest.

These moonbats didn't just have Obama stickers on their bumpers, they had 'em on the SIDE of their SUV. Anyways, these geniuses ended up bankrupting the HOA by depleting all of its reserve funds when, without telling anyone, they hired a local law firm to resolve what should have been a simple legal issue regarding the HOA's registration with the State. The two moonbats were apparently so thrilled to be the type of sophisticated Progressives who hire lawyers that they didn't ask basic questions like "how much will this cost?" and "why?" So what should have cost a couple of thousand dollars instead cost us tens of thousands of dollars. As a result, the HOA had to impose a special assessment so it could cover basic operational costs for the next few months. EVERYTHING PROGRESSIVES TOUCH TURNS TO SHIT.

The Almighty apparently has something different in mind than my poorly-laid plans, more often than not. That's why "My will that Yours be done" is handy to keep in mind. The ink was barely dry on the SALT I treaty in the 70s when it became apparent the Soviets were completely ignoring its strictures. They could have readily won a nuclear confrontation in the early 80s if all of their stuff actually was usable. Fortunately, a large portion of their missile lacked fueled or vital parts or were inoperative due to poor maintenance. The CIA missed this entirely but the Soviet generals knew the truth.

Serves 'em right. There really is no effective way to sit this one out, because the terrorists will kill you for being indifferent just the same as if you actively opposed them. They are truly crazy.

Soon, Saudi is going to have to call the royal house together and pick a side. And since their very existence is tied to Western money, they are ultimately going to have to pick our side and then all hell will break loose.

This is going to come down to a regional proxy war between Iran and their satellite ring of loons vs. the Saudis and their Western dependent allies.

Politics makes strange bedfellows, the fight for survival even more so. You get down to that enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend shit pretty quickly no matter what you originally intended.

OK. That brings me back to one of the things that I genuinely wonder about Israel. The Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel is an institution that offers only graduate level education and has produced three Nobel Prize winners. It was founded in 1934 by Chaim Weizmann, former president of the British Zionist Federation and first President of Israel. Weizmann was a biochemist who saved the British war production effort during WW I by developing a process to produce acetone by fermenting with Clostridium acetylbutyacium which produced butanol, acetone and ethanol and then distilling out the acetone for use in the production of cordite. This brought him promotion to the head of British Admiralty laboratories and the prestige to lobby David Balfour for the Balfour Resolution calling for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Israel.

The organism that Weizmann found to produce acetone also produces large quantities of butanol. Butanol works quite well as an automotive fuel. It seems to me that Weizmann's work could be continued to find other otganisms or to genetically modify the original organisms to optimize them for producing other gasoline and diesel substitutes and then to make them more robust and able to digest a wider variety of food, such as cellulose in rice straw or wheat chaff.

This could be done to, initially, make Israel independent of outside sources for motor fuel and eventually to make petroleum a much less important factor in world economics and strategic considerations.

Anyway, the Weizmann Institute has not done this and I often wonder why.

319 MWW, I will get willowed on this as very one has gone to the other thread. One of my basic grounding theological remise is that God's will is that we are to be transformed into the image of Christ. Since Christ experienced rejection, losses, povertybetrayal, a cross cross we can expect to suffer the samefwe want to be raised to Glory with him. Since we are weak creatures we cry out about this and it is very, very hard. Sometimes all we Can say is "Your will be done, Lord and may I accept it." Or as Flannery O'Connor said:

"What people don't realize is how much religion costs. They think faith is an electric blanket

When of course it is the cross."

It's not for lack of trying. There is a big difference between developing an industrial process for a necessity of war and trying to do the same for peacetime use. The Germans did some remarkable stuff with fuel synthesis during WWII because there was simply no other way to run their war machine. The same process would have been considered prohibitively expensive compared to foreign imports that would be available normally.

Biofuels have almost always had a problem with scaling to meet the numbers needed to justify making compatible vehicles. Even with Flexfuel models now fairly common, there have been a parade of companies saying they were going to have the volume problem fixed Real Soon Now. The only biofuels that can relibly produced in the needed volume are from sources that compete with food (or rather, food for food) production.

The thing is that butanol runs perfectly well in unmodified gasoline engines. You can Google some stories about a couple of guys who drove coast to coast using industrial butanol in an ordinary car. Gasoline is a mixture of a bunch of different chemicals. It seems that it should be possible to ferment and distil motor fuel that does not have the issues that people have with ethanol, most important of which is that it would not require modification of existing vehicle for optimum performance.

The Germans had the Bergius process working for years before the start of WW II. It was aided by high import taxes on petroleum but most European nations have had those any way in order to discourage the capital drain resulting from petroleum imports. After WW II, the US government modified an ammonia fertilizer plant in Missouri to produce gasoline from coal using the Bergius process used by the Germans. They had gotten the cost of the process down to the point that it was competitive with petroleum based gasoline when oil industry pressure ended the program. Of course, shortly afterwords massive oil supplies from the Middle East drove down the price of oil for the next two decades and that would have made the process unprofitable in any case.
