6 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, February 03, 2015. On this day in 1690 the colony of MA became the first in the Americas to issue paper money. It figures that MA would become the first fiat currency State.

ISIS and Al Qaeda are increasingly mounting and calling for attacks on soft targets as a means of deterring Western assaults on their strongholds, a strategy that is extending the reach of terrorism to hotels, cafés, supermarkets and malls where Europeans and Americans once felt safe.

I have some news for you dumb ass; terrorists have always targeted these civilian places. That is why they call them "terrorists".

69 Regarding the story in the sidebar about the parent of the unvaccinated child who spread measles...

Notwithstanding the fact that people who refused to vaccinate their children placed other children at higher risk, another element of the truth to this story is that measles were wiped out in this country before open borders. Is Obama at fault? Absolutely. So is every other politician in this country that tacitly or explicitly supported/supports open borders, especially those whose support is the product of pressures from lobbyists who legally bribe them.

One could pull on that string forever.

85 Nevada has a maximum limit for the number of days the Legislature can stay in session: 120 days. This means that by June, Nevada will begin over a year and a half free of the Legislature.

For the first time in nearly 100 years, the GOP picked up both houses of the Legislature and the Governorship. Sadly, the Governor is pushing for a massive tax hike that would put a progressive "fee" on businesses of up to 20,000% (despite the people of Nevada voting down a similar measure by a 4:1 margin in November).

The Gov. has the state Senate in his pocket, but unexpectedly, the Assembly flipped GOP. Lot's of dirty stuff going on due to the fact that the majority of the majority are not squishes (for now). However, my Assemblyman was elected unanimously as Speaker of the Assembly.

Also, it looks like the GOP dominated legislature may end up re-districting the legislature so that it is more favorable for Republicans (in 2011, the Dem Leg. and the GOP Gov. were at a stalemate, so judges wrote the boundaries.).

In two of the last three elections, more voters voted for GOP Assembly candidates, though the Dems held solid majorities in two of the three elections.

To complicate things further, the Dem collapse in '14 led to hard-core right wingers being elected AG and Sec. of State... as well as Controller and Treasurer. All of those four are hardcore right and have already stood up against our squishy Governor.

119 days left before Nevadans are free of the specter of "new laws"...

86 What really pissed me off was that article in the WaEx that listed positions all the current crop of potential Republican primary candidates are taking. On amnesty (by what ever BS name you want to call it) every damn one of them but Cruz supported some kind of amnesty.

89 Reposted, forgive me.

In 1957 I got pulled out of school, they jabbed me with gammagloblin and threw my ass in isolation. Little brother had The Polio, as I remember them calling it. We had taken the Salk vaccine. But he still got it.

For the next year and a half he mostly lived in an iron lung because he couldn't breathe. He was fed through a tube down his nose because he couldn't swallow. They vacuumed him out through a tube to his lungs because he couldn't cough the phlegm up.

He lived. He actually recovered. If he showed you the old tracheotomy scar on his neck you might suspect what happened, otherwise you'd never know.

There were some powerful prayers getting lofted.

New comment: This was in what we called "the good old days". We do not want them back.

Bonus comment: The little shithead could get away with murder for the next few years.

90 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

One of the big silent stars of the 1920s was the actress Mae Murray, also called "The Girl With the Bee-Stung Lips." Although never a critical favorite, her movies made money and were well-like by the public. Her career declined after talkies came in* and especially after her husband, the gold-digging "Prince" David Mdivani, encouraged her to walk out on her MGM contract. The result was that Louis Mayer blacklisted her, and other studios would not hire her.

In her later years, she appeared as a featured attraction at the "Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe" nightclub, most often performing her signature waltz from 1925s The Merry Widow. But she refused to acknowledge her age, wearing too much makeup and wearing dresses much too short and plunging for her (she was in her 50s at this point). So it might very well have been Murray who was the subject of the following story:

When Sinclair Lewis finished his novel Kingsblood Royal, he flew to Hollywood and "relaxed" by working on a screen adaptation of the story of Adam and Eve for producer Leo McCarey. Word of the production got around, and one day a "famous star of the twenties, still dressing like an ingenue although she showed signs of cracking around the edges," appeared at McCarey's office, applying for the role of Eve.

"It's true I'm going to do a new version of Adam and Eve," Carey remarked, eyeing the actress sourly, "but not with the original cast."

Here's Murray in her most famous role, the dancer Sally O'Hara in The Merry Widow:

http://goo.gl/tgtviD
And here's a 1922 portrait of Murray by the artist Theodore Lukits - Symphony in Jade and Gold (The Actress Mae Murray):

http://goo.gl/MsblQ3

And here's a webpage devoted to pictures of Murray. I must admit, she was very luscious in her prime. . .

http://goo.gl/AHMLD9

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*although not for her voice, which was decent enough, if with a slight German tinge.

93 Liberals are trying to turn this vaccination thing around on conservatives.

When this became a big issue, Didre? Imus, Don Imus' raving liberal wife, was promoting a bullshit report saying vaccines (or maybe the preservatives in the vaccine) were responsible for autism.

The argument now is vaccines should be mandatory. Of course, some should. Polio, measles, these are proven safe and effective. But what about vaccines against lessor threats?

Ebola? Should a parent in Ohio have the right to say the risk of her child being exposed to Ebola is low enough that she is refusing the vaccine?

I believe this is what Rand Paul and even the Fat Man are saying, but the hysterical press are spinning into an anti-science, Jesus riding a dinosaur thing.

Paul did show that he understands how the next election will be won - he is openly attacking reporters. Good man.

109 Perhaps the horde can explain something.

Suppose my kid's vaccinated for measles and some other kids are not.

So what do my kid and I care? He's not going to catch measles. After all, he's vaccinated.

Is
not the risk of infection (i.e., the risk of not being vaccinated)
confined only to the unvaccinated? Is that not a risk they knowingly
take when they choose not to be vaccinated? Think of it this way. There are 500 kids in a school. All but 20 of them are vaccinated. One kid brings measles to school. She sickens at most the other 19 who are unvaccinated, right?

So why the big stink? Most parents are responsible. Those parents who are not responsible will have hurt their own kids and no others. Thus, has it ever been.

Or, is it that the vaccination is not really as effective as some might have others think?

You care because there are times when your child cannot be vaccinated and/or your child's immune system is less capable of fighting off disease, even when vaccinated. At any of those times you depend upon herd immunity to protect your child.

The big deal is that the vaccine doesn't always work, and the un-vaccinated can transmit it to them also. Something like a 3% failure chance on many vaccines. One out of thirty three, statistically speaking. That un-vaccinated kid is likely to sit in classrooms, lunch tables, buses, and so on with enough people to cause multiple cases in one day.

Why else is it a big deal? Viruses mutate, and some of them do so at an alarming rate. With these vaccines, we have the chance to eradicate these viruses in the wild, much like we did with Smallpox. If we lose that chance, it might mutate into something far worse that we can't control.

The strawman and slippery slope fallacies being two of the more obvious ones.

The Dem fallacy works like this: Republican, since you say you accept the need for the government to impose compulsory vaccination for you to be consistent then you must also accept the need for the government to impose compulsory X [name the liberal wish du jour].

The Republican, being a lethal combination of uneducated, self-serving and stupid, bites and in an effort to avoid having to accept X and appear philosophically inconsistent, backpeddles on vaccinations. See, Christie.

The Dems' real aim is to paint mainstream conservatives as being indistinguishable from anarchists.

After this year I can go to every two years if they do not find anything.

173 Re boosters, I herd they changed one of the old school vaccines to try to reduce side effects and it turned out to not last as long as the others. I think this was mostly an issue for adults, but you might want to check with your doctor.

Herd immunity is important. Look at the r nought factor Ina community, the more people vaccinated the less likely the virus can catch in a place. Which protects everyone. And some kids can't get a vaccine for legitimate medical reasons and as mentioned, sometimes you will still get the disease even with vaccinations. So yes exceptions have to be made and yes everybody else needs to be vaccinated.

175 With vaccinations and our kids it was always about weighing risks/rewards. So MMR and polio were no brainers. Meningitis was a yes once college was decided on. Chicken pox was a no since the risk of anything serious happening was slim and the actual vaccination effectiveness seemed week.

I don't buy the anti-vax nuts but neither to I accept the pro-vax for everything people.

This is the verbal trap being set - to say ALL vaccines should be mandatory is BS. Measles, mumps, TB, polio - of course.

Gardasil (HPV), Shingles, Dengue Fever - well no not really, your choice

This reminds me of the debates about stem cell research when the media would deliberately obfuscate the difference between stem cells and EMBRYONIC stem cells so that skeptics would appear to be Luddites / anti-science.
