It has come to my attention that the cat pictures at the top of the Weekend ONT are not always the most flattering, though they probably do accurately reflect the usually pervasive pugilistic feeling, mortal threat, and general evil intent that American society does in fact face from the American TOMCAT. Nevetheless, despite the American TOMCAT's most likely intentions to destroy everything it can, and render miserable all else, I think it would be better it the weekend ONT top-of-post cat picture showed cats helping old ladies cross streets, young people being able to close down on mortgages thanks to the help of their cat counsellor at law, cat rabbis holding bat mitzvahs to welcome forth new generations, and in general cats as being a force for good. This way, the shock will be even greater when the worm finally turns and the rampage begins.

Most movie swordfights are bullsh*t. Don't get me wrong, the last duel in Highlander is awesome, but two trained and unarmored combatants, it's going to be over real quick. I fenced saber in college and the average time from "go" to "touche" was probably about 3 seconds, and most of those would have been incapacitating if not fatal had they been real blades.

Oh, the techniques change some, but speed still kills. Look at the medieval sword manuals, or the guys who fight authentic medieval style--they use the pommel, knees, elbows, whatever to hit, wound and kill. This "high guard, block with the blade repeatedly" crap in the movies bears as much reality to earnest bladework as the end of Rocky V (what? Never happened!) does to a real street fight.

That's not actually true. Part of the contract the artist typically signs involves who is responsible for the songbook. The label/management company is the one who determines who pays for a license and gets to use the music.

Tonight was the annual Daddy/Daughter Ball. I get dressed up, the midgets get dressed up and off we go to the Ritz-Carlton.
After a little over an hour, I'm talking to one of my buddies, back to the dance floor, and all of sudden "Brent Brent Brent!" while pointing over my shoulder. I turn around...and here comes my youngest, crying hysterically and with blood covering her face from the nose down, the width of her mouth. Blood on the front of her dress. Blood all over one arm.
Apparently her and another girl banged heads on the dance floor. Busted nose. I grab a napkin and start trying to clean her up. A dad grabbed another napkin and dunked it in some water to help me. Another dad ran over and filled a napkin up with some ice.
Meanwhile I got about a half dozen little girls all yelling at once about what happened. (Funniest thing, this posse hunted down the girl that ran into my midget and forced an apology out of her and then came back to tell us about it.)
So I had to call the wife to come get the little one, eldest midget and I stayed for the rest of the ball.

Wrong on several levels. Katana were solely the province of the samurai, mostly they fought and killed untrained peasants, as were most "armies" in medieval times and certainly unarmored. The legions fought many more barbarian tribes than organized armies, but the gladius was usually a secondary weapon, and the enemy was already without his shield thanks to the pilum stuck in it. Medieval fencing fell into two main categories, sport (using the foil) and dueling, which was in earnest and used the epee. Most duels were to first blood, but not all, and while the foil is a toy, the epee is definitely more than capable of killing someone when fitted with a sharpened point. I was specifically talking about duels earlier, as your are correct that there is no true parallel between fencing and general melee--though they did have non-lethal tournaments of that sort as well, where the techniques discussed above would have been used. Saber, my weapon of choice, is purely a modern fencing style, as it was based on a cavalry weapon that was slash and run, not static combat on foot.

Now THAT is an interesting question. The contract I reviewed, the artist ultimately owned the rights. If the relationship ended with the management company, rights went with the artist. But during the course of the contract, the company could license it out however they wanted and to whoever they wanted.

Reason I know about the e-juice/nicotine issue is as it relates to insurance underwriting. I've been told by several underwriters that vaping with any level of nicotine = tobacco use. Be nice if manufacturers could/would disclose if they use non-tobacco-derived nicotine.

I don't get people who want wild animals for pets. Domesticated animals have been domesticated for thousands of years. Wild animals are -wild. One day they could get pissed and instead of sulking or pooping in the bathtub (I had a cat who did that if you left her alone too long), they'll rip your face off.
Somebody's pet chimp did that to its owner's neighbor a few years ago. Literally tore her face off.
I'd personally even feel uneasy about having a dog who is half wolf around. It would be like knowingly adopting one of Charles Manson's kids - you'd always be worried about that DNA showing itself.

My understanding is that the hybrids are actually more dangerous than just a straight wolf cub. Hybrids tend to kill or drive out any other dog, they're generally loners. Wolves at least retain their instinctive pack behavior.
70 pounds would be small for a hybrid, btw, unless it was a Mexican wolf hybrid. Your typical timber wolf is more like the size of a medium mastiff, might push 150 pounds in a male and well over 100 for a female. Even a lab/wolf hybrid would probably be close to 100 pounds.

Crispin brut extra dry cider - which is still a bit too sweet for me.
I'm getting into the dry ciders lately and so far I like the imported English stuff the best.
I recently read about hard cider - it was as American as apple pie and drunk more than beer in rural America up until the mid 1800's. The large wave of German immigration, and their fondness for beer, made a dent in cider's popularity. What really finished it off was Prohibition. To survive, all the suppliers had to switch to making apple juice, which made Americans used to sweet apple beverages. That explains why so many American ciders are so sweet.
Dry cider takes a little getting used to, but now I'm kinda hooked on it now.

the smoking thing makes my teeth grind (mostly because I think it was part of the reason for my layoff). The company lays off the smokers then puts everyone on rotating shifts. A friend told me that when they did that it took about 2 weeks for someone-not used to working the small hours of the morning-fell asleep behind the wheel of his car and got smashed up pretty badly. Great use of the actuarial tables on that bit of genius.

That's actually a funny story. When Rush started using the song, Chrissie Hynde's management had a fit and sent cease and desist letters out. Hynde was the one who called off the lawyers almost immediately, even though she's totally leftist. Apparently, her parents are Rush fans, and she didn't mind him using the song at all. So they came to an agreement and she donates the royalties from Rush to PETA.

My brother got snipped. He dreaded it, was a bit sore for a couple of days, but was fine after that.
And my sister in law certainly didn't react in the way you said. She was extremely happy to not have to take the Pill or worry about pregnancy and said it improved their sex life. (My sister in law has no qualms when it comes to talking about that stuff, which makes me slightly uneasy, since I really don't care to know about my kid brother's sex life.)

I have a sound card driver in my PC than can handle audiophile headphones up to 600 ohms. I also have a good Bose pair of computer speakers plugged into it, which probably use up no more than 40 or so ohms.
So... if I then plug my audiophile headphones into the plug that's *built into the Bose speakers,* am I somehow hurting the headphones performance?

She'll be groggy when you pick her up, from the anesthesia. Be patient. You'll probably have to drive. Be gracious, she just had surgery, you can relax the rules for the trip home.
When she gets home, she won't want to make dinner. If you let her go to the bedroom instead of the kitchen, you'll probably have to make sandwiches.
She'll probably be pretty limp in the sack that night. Don't expect the usual enthusiasm.
You may get some weak ass excuses for a couple of days. "Oh, the vibration from the vacuum hurts my gut". Be understanding, but firm. No reason you should have to live in a pig sty.
Your sex life shouldn't change much. I've heard that she may enjoy it more freed from worry over pregnancy, but really, who cares about that?

A sound card has an output that has a pretty tiny signal. To run a loudspeaker system, you need to have some type of amplifier between your sound card and your speakers.
Headphones are high impedance (300 or 50 ohms)
Loudspeakers are low (4 or 8 ohms)
If you can get loud, clear music from your speakers, yer doin' it right, don't worry.

OK -- to start with, ohms are a measure of resistance. They effectively indicate how much of the current is being turned into another form of energy -- either sound or heat. It actually takes more current to drive speakers to desired sound levels if they are rated at low ohms.

Think of the sound card like any other source you would have to plug into a stereo amp and speakers.
A sound card puts out about as much power as a tuner or a cd player by itself. (not much)

Whatever you do, you will not hurt the headphone's performance. Worse case, you will not be able to achieve the sound level that you might desire, but the audio quality will not be affected. If there is audible distortion, then you are using more power than the amplifier(s) can deliver.

You will hurt the headphone's performance, but probably not in a very perceptible way. If the signal is reamplified in the speaker, you'll lose some S/N and gain distortions from the amplifier (minimal).

For my test PC, I rip the various front panel connections to the rear and run them backwards. It's stupid, but Ive never been able to convince a box maker to build me a PC with power and air flow at the rear and card slots, panel connectors, switches, and drives in the front. There was one model of Dell (IIRC) several years ago that had a square motherboard that you rotate, rewire, pop out the front grill and get to the slots - but there was no structure to keep things stable.

The only reason headphone manufacturers specify impedance is so you can match impedance with a source. It doesn't have anything to do with how much it can "handle."

I went down Tuesday night with some gastreointetinal thingy, watery bowels from hell until Thursday. Then just very weak and queasy. Then today I threw up some, very little, I did eat, now I'm 110% sure my right ear is infected. Fluid must have gotten into it while throwing up. Did I mention I had my PRP Shot series on Monday in my hands and knees and then had my monthly womanly visitor come on Wednesday? I've spent my time in the bathroom, in bed, washing sheets & bedding, plus getting the kids up and ready & to school & picked up and trying to keep them feed. And my husband is mad at me cause ..............I'm sick??????? WTF??????????
Plus side I've dropped almost 10 lbs.........

Mike and others, there's such a thing as a 'headphone amp/DAC' that I think is also a sound card/amplifier, but many of them contain more than one plug-in. So supposedly I could plug this into my computer's sound card, then run both my speakers and headphones from it.
Maybe that's the answer. Kinda/sorta a powered 'Y' like others mentioned. The headphones I want to get do *not* have their own volume control BTW.

I know! Tax e-cigs at the same rate as regular cigarettes. Also ban vaping in public.

That's how mine is set up. I have 5.1 surround system on my PC, and the volume and bass control for it sits on the desk and has a headphone jack in it. I can control the headphone volume by opening up a sound mixer window.

Something that I have found useful for ear infections in the past is to take the internal antibiotic, but then to also apply an external antibiotic (e.g. Neosporin) on the outside, via a Q-tip inserted carefully down the ear canal.

My husband's band played for Magpul's "Farewell to high-capacity magazine-banning Colorado" event. Now they are being investigated by the Colorado Department of Labor. Supposedly, even though the guys are independent contractors and not employees of the band, the state thinks they are employees and therefore owe back unemployment taxes. The state is going to spend more on man-hours on this stupid witch hunt than they could ever hope to recoup, not to mention the time and energy they are stealing from the guys making them fill out endless forms.

I was at an estate sale, here in the SF Bay Area. Browsing around the main living room where the estate sale people had put out all the old lady's jewelry, Hummel figurines, her husband's bowling trophies, old clothing -- the usual.
So it was a typical estate sale and suddenly a voice pierces the murmur, "Girl-bitch, I am an aristocrat! You know you just want to give me this hat!"
I turn to look and some kind of oddball transvestite person is trying to get the elderly estate-sale organizer to give away one of the old lady's church hats. The transvestite, as far as I could tell, started life male, grew up into a rather short man, but had modest-sized breast implants, was wearing over-the-top stage makeup, but had a pencil-mustache, and was dressed like a Tom of Finland sailor, but with a wig. Overall, a kind of tranny mess.
"$25" said the estate-sale lady, her expression unchanged.
"Bitch are you crazy? I deserve this hat. Whateverrrrrrrr. $25 is nothing to me. I'm a fucking millionaire." The tranny then snaps his/her fingers and does a little sassy head maneuver.
"Here's $30, queenie. Keep the change. Because I'm just like that. Karma, bitches!"
This is the kind of typical tranny attitude around here - imperious, smug, mocking, insulting, "performative," theatrical, sneering, bitchy. With self-esteem so high it can't be measured.
In short: assholish.
It dawned on me that, this being the Bay Area, people didn't hate trannies out of blind bigotry, or discomfort with sexual deviance, or any of the standard rationalizations the left comes up with to explain why people tend to want to punch trannies in the mouth. No, people hate trannies because trannies tend to act like bitches. On purpose. As an act, in public. Trannies like to rile people up, and win schoolyard insult contests. And they desperately want to be the center of attention, even if it's negative attention.
No one at the estate sale was some stuck-up puritanical Christian who hate trannies for being "transgressive." Yet I got the sense that everyone there did indeed hate that tranny for the reason that most people hate trannies: they tend to be assholes. They try to make themselves hatable. The public's general discomfort with trannies (I'm talkin' real-world trannies, not fake trannies in films and on TV, where they're alway kind and quirky) is based on repeated experiences like this one at the estate sale. It's not about sex -- it's about having an unpleasant personality disorder.

I can think of a reason that a band would not want their music associated with a Republican.
My husband's band played for Magpul's "Farewell to high-capacity
magazine-banning Colorado" event. Now they are being investigated by
the Colorado Department of Labor. Supposedly, even though the guys are
independent contractors and not employees of the band, the state thinks
they are employees and therefore owe back unemployment taxes. The state
is going to spend more on man-hours on this stupid witch hunt than they
could ever hope to recoup, not to mention the time and energy they are
stealing from the guys making them fill out endless forms.

I had a very similiar experience, zombie. Years ago, I was invited to a Halloween party in DC. I threw together a cat women outfit - and, as a final touch wore a mink stoll which had been my mother's. It was once of those odd '50's stolls with the entire friggin bodies on it - heads, little claws, a clasp which was formed by one mink "biting" the tail of another. I can't tell you how fascinated I was by this string of dead animals my mother wore around her neck to church every week. I thought it was the perfect, rather ghoulish touch for Halloween.
The party was near DC's Gay Central, Dupont Circle and as I was walking to it, two obvious trannies stopped in front of me and DEMANDED that stoll. "I have to have that! That is divine! I'll give you $20 - no $30 - for it!" I really didn't want to sell it to them, not because I was planning on wearing it that much, but because my mom had recently died, it was something she owned, something that I had liked as a kid and I wanted to hang onto it.
They kept bantering with me, and at first it was funny, but then they got bitchy. Because they HAD to have it. Finally, I said, "Fuck you, I'm not selling it" and went around them. They said something back but I don't remember what it was.
But yeah - bitchy entitlement.

Ahh, so its an access thing. Ok, one thing you can try is to get an 1/8" plug extension cord, which is the size of pc headphone jacks. Plug the sucker into the sound card, and run the female end up to your desk and just let it sit there. When you want to plug in headphones just plug it into the cord and you're done.
Now, the only thing I wonder about is if having an actual jack plugged into the headphone jack of soundcard is enough to kill the speaker end even though there isn't a load on it, as in when there is no headphones attached. If that's the case then an extension isn't going to solve anything. I'm not sure what turns off the speakers, the load of the headphones, or activating the jack. Like I said earlier, I have a surround system on my pc, because asshole me needs volume to keep up with the frigging 100 watt tube guitar amp I use as a practice amp next to the pc, so my surround has a volume control on the desk with a headphone jack in it. I'm surprised your PC don't have a front mounted headphone jack.

I just read up a bunch of posts. Your bose speakers HAVE a headphone jack on them? If that's the case you're done. I have JBLs on the desk that have a headphone jack in them and it works fine that way. I use those speakers with my guitar port, which is an interface for plugging the guitar into for when I want to record, and this way I have guitar coming only out of the JBLs, which leaves my surround speakers for just music. The headphone jack on the JBLs works perfect, if you have a jack on those Bose speakers you're golden, just use that.

You aren't "using up" the ohms. What you normally want to do is "match impedance". Meaning the impedance of the source is equal to the impedance of the load. And impedance =/= DC resistance. Impedance is the vector sum (IIRC) of DC resistance, inductive reactance, and capacitive reactance, at a specified frequency. You can (in fact, must) impedance-match transmitting antennas and transmission lines, too. Bad things happen if you fail to do so, as in the magic smoke gets out.
Rule of thumb: when it comes to low-power audio, you can connect a high-impedance load, like 600 ohm headphones, to a low-impedance source, say an 8-ohm amplifier, and it will sound good, as long as the amp also sees an 8-ohm load. The amp in a computer sound card doesn't put out much, and probably doesn't need to see an 8-ohm load to work. If you do the converse, and connect an 8-ohm speaker to a 600-ohm source, you will be lucky to hear anything at all. You have basically just shorted out your amp.
Your Bose speakers probably contain their own amp, so the computer's sound card won't "see" any impedance mismatch between the phones and the amp in the speaker system.

Heh, that's a gimmee. The headphone jack on the front panel of the PC disconnects the speakers. Goes to back to the early days of radio. Rationale being that if you want to listen privately with headphones, you don't need the speaker blaring, too. Just about every radio ever sold with both a speaker and a headphone jack is wired that way.

I hadn't previously seen this one, though the fiancee had when she was in Ireland on a business trip. Unfortunately, she was inexperienced with G+S at the time, jetlagged, stressed, the costumes were more like street clothes, and all the lines were delivered with a significant Irish accent.....so she watched this production and experienced a series of revelations.

Two sound cards is a solution, and they're not that expensive; you can get good ones nowadays for around $40. BUT... then I read that they and their software can conflict, get tied up in knots together and cause whole new problems with your PC.

I didn't know you had a jack on your headphones. Windows might not be able to recognize something connected to it -- though it should.
High ohm headphones are made to handle high watt amplifiers without burning out. They'll work just fine with your computer because computers don't crank out lots of watts. You don't need a high watt amp to drive them. They are just able to handle a high watt amp without frying.

Ohms are a measure of resistance. It's the amount of energy you're running through the pipe that is converted into some other form of energy. In the case of speakers, it can either come out as sound or waste (heat). Capacity is the amount of energy you're running through the pipe.

Nope, ohms (in this case impedance) is not a measurement of capacity. Use that word in the context of anything electronic, and you are talking about capacitors, the value of which is normally quoted in micro/pico/nano-farads.
Resistance is the measure of the property of a circuit element to impede the flow of electric current. DC current, AC current, doesn't matter, in the strictest sense.
Reactance is the measure of the property of a circuit element to impede the flow of alternating current at a given frequency. Reactance of capacitors is inversely related to frequency; reactance of inductors, i.e. coils of wire, like the guts of a speaker or headphones, is directly related to frequency. Measure the resistance of the voice coil of an 8-ohm speaker with a common multimeter using DC, and you might see only 0.2 ohm. The other 7.8 ohms is inductive reactance at whatever audio frequency is used to rate the product.
Impedance is the sum of DC resistance, inductive reactance, and capacitive reactance, and it's a vector quantity, because, reasons. (heh) For the piddly power involved in PC sound cards, the worst result of an impedance mismatch is going to be that it sounds tinny or boomy, or otherwise distorted. Not likely you will hurt anything. Hook a set of 4-ohm speakers to a vacuum tube amp rated for 8-ohm speakers, and crank the volume up, and watch the plates of the output tubes glow cherry red.

No not really, the stuff I use is all made for guitar by the same company, so the guitar amp simulation software, the recording software, and the guitar port are all joined at the hip. I'm not sure if any of it will work without the others. that's a whole different level of agony. lol

The plumbing analogy: voltage is equivalent to pressure; current is equal to flow rate, and resistance is equivalent to the flow restriction imposed by the pipe. The bigger the pipe (speaking diameter here) the more water will flow through with a given head of water pressure. Mathematically, the treatment is "almost" identical.

No, I had a musician friend visit from the UK, and he had the brain storm of wanting to daisy chain a bunch of Marshall amp stacks together because he figured when would he get the chance. It was fucking loud, and after midnight, like 1am maybe. I think we got up to about 6 amps and 12 4x12 cabs, so the neighbor got hammered with 600 watts going through 48 12" speakers. Yeah, he was pissed. lol

Both me and my brother completely slaughtered the competition in 2 separate years in the pinewood. We did 3 things. One was make the car at the max allowed weight, and made sure it was perfectly balanced from front to back. then we polished the stupid nail axles they give you where the wheels ride, we used a fine sandpaper until the surface was polished. Then the last thing was graphite powder on the axles and spun the wheels a bunch of times to work it in and then added some more. The following year the scumbags disqualified my brother because they said his car was too heavy. My father at the time had a deli and had a few accurate scales we used to weigh the car, it was nuts on. We ran the car up to the local deli and had them weigh it after he was disqualified to check the weight and it was perfect. We wasted the competition so bad with our methods that the butt hurt scoutmaster son who was tired of getting beaten 2 years in a row probably cried to daddy. No fucking way was that car overweight.

My dad's a Mechanical Engineer who had worked in aerospace. He did more with the car than I did -- but, yes, ultra-polishing the axles and graphite were involved, along with weighting.....and I've got a trophy.

The Smith and Wesson Triplelock, predecessor of the M1917 was ordered by
the British for WWI in .455 (Webley) caliber. Also, the RCMP used Colt
and Smiths in .455 for decades until they switch to semiauto.

During WW I, the British also ordered a lot of Colt and Smith and Wessons in .455 caliber. The big Webley .455 pistols have chambers that are bored straight through the cylinder. I am not sure if that is true for the American made .455 revolvers. Since .455 Webley is not that common in the US, many of the Webley revolvers were modified to use .45 ACP in moon clips after they were sold off as surplus. The modification consisted of cutting off the rear of the cylinder so that there was room for the rear of the .45 ACP case and moon clip.
The Model 1917 Colt and Smith revolvers that were made for .45 ACP had a shoulder machined in the chambers of the cylinder so that .45 ACP cartridges could be loaded and fired without the moon clips. However, the .45 ACP cartridges do not have a rim so the revolver ejection mechanism has nothing to grab on to and the individual fired cartridge cases have to be poked out with a stick, a pencil or a cleaning rod. Because there were so many 1917 revolvers sold as surplus after WW I, ammunition makers produced the .45 Auto Rim cartridge. It is basically a .45 ACP but with a rim that is thicker than normal so that it functions with the revolver ejector mechanism and also fills up the space between the rear of the cylinder and the frame, keeping the primer where it should be for the firing pin to hit it correctly.
In the 1920s and 1930s, war surplus model 1917s would have been available cheap and so would be a reasonable choice for Indiana Jones. They were issued to pilots flying air mail. In the movie, "The Grapes of Wrath", there is a scene where a sheriff's deputy fires a 1917 revolver which hits one of the women standing in the crowd. The other deputies comment on what a big hole those .45s make.
In the 1930s, Argentina wanted more .45 ACP revolvers for its police force but surplus Model 1917 revolvers were no longer being manufactured. They put in an order with Smith and Wesson which made a few thousand of them.
