16 Every time I see the name Amanda Knox (and I only see it here), my first thought is she was one of those bloggers who either is like a hard core feminist, or she was letting Washington staffers poke her up her poop hole (or both).

Then I remember, that case in Italy that nobody else in the world, other than AoSHQ, seems to care about.

Something broke.

More seriously... Windows or Mac? If it's windows, it sounds like something may have gotten borked with your motherboard driver (Windows calls it the chipset driver) (that's assuming all the input devices + sound, etc. are all freaking out). If so, the fix is going to suck.

It's also possible that something bad got downloaded. If so, the fix is also going to suck.

Safe mode loads the most basic available drivers for your equipment. Thing is, the chipset already *is* the most basic available driver for the motherboard (sort of).

If a reboot doesn't take care of it, you might try rebooting into Safe mode. If that works, you *should* be able to restore to the most recent restore point (whenever that might be).

Otherwise... yeah, it's going to be a mess to fix.

143 Ancient IT joke

If operating systems ran your car, and you needed to go shopping:

MS-DOS: You get in the car and try to remember where you put the keys.
Windows: You get in the car and drive to the shops very slowly, because attached to the back of the car is a freight train.
Macintosh System 7: You get in the car to drive to the shops and the car drives you to church.
Unix: You get in the car and type ‘grep store’. After reaching speeds of 200 mph en route, you arrive at the barbershop.
Windows NT: You get in the car and write a letter that says “go to the shops”. Then you get out of the car and nail the letter to the dashboard.
Taligent/Pink: You walk to the store with Ricardo Montalban who tells you how wonderful it will be when he can fly you to the store in his LearJet.
OS/2: After fuelling up with 6000 gallons of fuel, you get in the car and drive to the shops with a motorcycle escort and a marching band in procession. Halfway there, the car blows up, killing everyone.
S/36 SSP: You get in the car and drive to the shops. Halfway there you run out of fuel. While walking the rest of the way, you are run over by kids with mopeds.
AS/400: An attendant kicks you into the car and then drives you to the shops where you get to watch everyone else buying filets mignon.

They should simply rescind the rule that Brady lobbied for where teams supply the balls and go back to the MLB/NBA-style setup where the league supplies the balls.

(A) That's been the rule, Brady didn't lobby for it.

(ii) The league does supply the balls. The quarterbacks get a couple of weeks to break them in to their liking. All quarterbacks on all teams. All quarterbacks want this.

(trois) The Patriots are going to dominate.

(4) I'm going to win the office pool.

I used to be a Linux bigot, then I hit 40 and lost my patience for kernel recompiles and package dependency hell. Nowadays I really like that OS X is the "desktop Unix that normal people can use" that KDE and GNOME have been failing to ship for the last 2 decades.

Posted by: Ian S. at January 30, 2015 04:24 PM (B/VB5)

211 So... I think my wife's work is going to find out the definition of "FYNQ" pretty quick.

She works part time- 2 days a week. The original agreement when she went back (she used to be full time- they begged her to return) was that she would work one day in the office- 8:30 - 2:30, and one other day from home for 6 - 8 hours (for 12 - 14 hrs in a normal week), with the occasional log-in from home for a few extra hours (up to 20 per week max).

Now they have changed the rules to require that she be in the office both days. Okay, fine.

Now they want her to change her days (she goes in on Tues & Thurs) so that one of her days in the office is Friday- at which point they want her to work until 6 PM.

Now, for various reasons, This Will Not Work. Had they asked back in September, we could have made it work. This late it the school-year, they're SOL.

I'm pretty sure she's going to point out that she's back as much as a favor to them as for the money, and that she's already doing more than the original agreement, and tell them to find an FTE to be there until 6PM on Friday.

212 Not watching the Super Bowl this year. Easy since I'm not a fan of either team but I'm boycotting NBC (again easy) until I hear they fired the brat correspondent that called Chris Kyle a racist spree killer.
Its bad enough they suppress the truth and lie for EarLeader and the CPUSA I won't stand for vile slandering on top of that shit cake.
