Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Big Data Can Figure Out Who's Buying What, Even With Names and Numbers Withheld from Credit Card InformationWell, sort of. The idea is that given three months of shopping history, with no names or numbers attached, Big Data techniques can figure out who you are anyway, or at least can match your records to your name (if given your name on a list). When I read that, I thought: Assuming Big Data has you offering information under your name, such as your location on FourSquare, or saying things like "I just bought an aquarium" on social media. And that is in fact what they mean. But so many people dribble out so much of that sort of information... Pretty much, for most people, if you exist online at all, they know who you are and they know what you're buying or just browsing.Your shopping habits can expose who you are even when you are just one of a million nameless customers in a database of anonymous credit-card records, according to a new study that shows how so-called metadata can be used to circumvent privacy protections in commercial and government databases. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, writing Thursday in the journal Science, analyzed anonymous credit-card transactions by 1.1 million people. Using a new analytic formula, they needed only four bits of secondary information--metadata such as location or timing--to identify the unique individual purchasing patterns of 90% of the people involved, even when the data were scrubbed of any names, account numbers or other obvious identifiers. ...So, like, Be More Paranoid. Only once or twice in my life have I mentioned something that I have just bought or done on social media, and that was usually a day or two after the event. I've never seen the appeal of needing to broadcast everything I do ("Hey, look at my Chik-fil-A sandwich and hate shake!").

Like... Voter Rolls... andddd... Did you know your Name, phone number, and Address can be sold by your Phone provider? even on Cell phones? Here's a Big Data thing I predict.
A lot of us commenter types, myself included, like to use fake names and pseudonyms around the net. Here's what I expect to happen in the future. You take a block of text written by some fake-named, anonymous coward (like me). You feed that text into Big Data De-Anonymizer Machine. The De-Anonymizer then looks at vocab and style and sentence construction ... and pulls up all the other names you've been writing under for the last 20 years on the web. And, if you have any writing samples on the net with your real name, it'll pull that up, too. Privacy is dead. And it's only gonna get deader. Posted by: Costanza Defense at January 30, 2015 12:17 PM (ZPrif) 47

However, if I ever did want to stock up on 2nd Amendment items* I would use cash. May miss out on some online deals, but not nearly as traceable. *Not disclosing whether or not such stockpile may or may not exist Posted by: Virginia SoCon at January 30, 2015 12:18 PM (+/C3g) 51
So after looking at credit card purchase data and and social media posts from people who talk about things they just bought, we are able to connect the two things.
This doesn't seem like something that is that hard to do (assuming one has access to the CC data and can efficiently mine social media--a big if, but not too big an if for a govt or big corp) or that shocking. The easy answer to this is to stop sharing so much trivial information. New flash: the people you know don't really care about this stuff, the only people who do are those that want to do you harm. I am known for being extremely cautious about sharing Super Sekrit Real Life Information online. I am, it's true. I am cautious and wary about that, to the extent that Certain People *glares* mock me for it. But, yes, I am very particular about that. Except for Bezos. Ace seems genuine in his interest and I am not in any way expert enough to do it justice... The Donks have Goggle and Fuckbook openly colluding with them on exerting datamining tech to micro target... it *is* the reality we live in and too many on our side happily feed defacto agents of the enemy. Anyway I respect Ace and in fact all the Cobs here my sometime antipathy to Gabe is 90% playful. It would be a good interview and would expand the Horde rolodex. Posted by: Sven S Blade a.k.a. Here's how this transaction is going to go: I'm going to give you a wad of $20 bills, 9 of them to be exact and you're going to hand me a bag full of electronic components, a receipt and change in the amount of $11.13. It's not all that new though. 10 years ago I worked for a client where we did regression analysis and predicted almost exactly how much each customer would spend annually based only a few key demographic characteristics. What blew me away though was how much info they had on their customers. Year/make/model of their car, how often they flew, whether kids were in public or private school. For the love of G-d, we're just trying to eat your overpriced crap here! After politely demurring 4 times, we weren't so polite the 5th time. I had read an article 12+ years ago about how a grocery store can easily identify your demographics based on purchases made in conjunction w/their discount card. So I have never filled out the form for those linking my name and address to my purchase history (cashiers don't care - they'll just give you one w/out the form). Obviously, that can also be done via my credit card, so maybe it's just a false sense of security...

Right, the anti-plagiarism stuff is already there. But that works more on exact matches, not smart enough to detect style. Or sense of humor. Or even topics.
But most of us have certain hobby horses and issues we talk about more than others. Big Data De-Anonymizer will notice that sort of stuff. If you have certain jokes or turns of phrases you like to use. Or if there are certain topics you like to talk about that aren't super typical ... it will ID you. Who's the guy here who often gets angry about Red States and "Red" being used to ID conservatives when it used to be the color of Commies and the Left. He would often rant about that. None of this is new and the data pools needed stretch back 15-20 years but we are just now gettingto the point thanks to processing power, technique, and solid state drives we can consume and sift enough to make it an economical tool....it is deadly when coupled with a partisan weaponized civil service...ask Joe the Plumber...
Those are easy targets. They are research jobs. "This guy dared speak back to JEF; investigate and destroy" Being handed leads by the Russians ad following the antics of the bastard brothers and their fun loving family is harder, may never pan out to anything, but is the reason this monstrosity exists. We have decades of information gleaned from communication intercepts from Soviet, Russian, N.Korean, E. German sources. Most was keeping vigil, and is now dead storage. --------------------------- I was lucky enough to learn that lesson back in 1998 when someone dug up some info I'd posted elsewhere under the same nym and quoted it back to me. That was the end of that. Anyone with access to the right data can find out anything they need to, and I don't have any illusions about that... but I make it hard on everyone else. Last year, a friend of my mother's from 30 years ago went searching for her online through relatives - any info she could get her hands on - and assumed I must be dead. When she finally got in touch with my mom, she was literally waiting to give her condolences. Posted by: Mega at January 30, 2015 12:41 PM (hHFOx) 198

Re: paying for things in cash. There is a HUGE push to mandate that sellers keep information on cash transactions.
For example, a couple of years ago NC passed a law that requires that identifying information be collected for cash sales. I don't remember all the particulars, but, yes, if I go into Ed McKay and sell stuff and tell them I want cash, I have to show id. Ed McKay has to keep that information on record. I know there have been states trying to mandate id requirements for all cash purchases and people pointing out that this would include yard sales. Government entities HATE people using cash. Big thing is Big Data has just about gotten to the point where it can read the internet and understand the topics being discussed.
Target and Amazon Big Data works well cause it knows exactly what you buy and those things are. In the near future Big Data will scoop up this webpage and know exactly what is being discussed and who is saying what and be able to map the 17 different arguments going on. Arguing tools will monitor your arguments and suggest papers to cite and references -- oh, she says breastfeeding is healthier? Here's 5 academic papers that says she's an idiot! Oh, he says xbox is the best, here's latest sales data on PS4, boom! Real-time argument aides that monitor your online arguments and offer support. Then ten years after that they can just argue for you and you can go watch cartoons. Posted by: Costanza Defense at January 30, 2015 12:48 PM (ZPrif) 222

Then add another decade or two and place all of this power in the hands of a relatively few, freedom despising and liberty hating tyrants. Remember, it's not just information that they have.
