BREAKING: Like Chicago, Romney Is Out. Romney Is Out.

We won't have Mitt Romney to kick around anymore.

After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee.

Let me give you some of my thinking. First, I am convinced that with the help of the people on this call, we could win the nomination. Our finance calls made it clear that we would have enough funding to be more than competitive. With few exceptions, our field political leadership is ready and enthusiastic about a new race. And the reaction of Republican voters across the country was both surprising and heartening. I know that early poll numbers move up and down a great deal during a campaign, but we would have no doubt started in a strong position. One poll out just today shows me gaining support and leading the next closest contender by nearly two to one. I also am leading in all of the four early states. So I am convinced that we could win the nomination, but fully realize it would have been difficult test and a hard fight.

Full statement here.

Heartache. Just heartache.

The drinking starts early today my friends.

Added: Allow me to the be the first to congratulate Jeb Bush on his ascendancy to the GOP presidential nomination.

[Bonus content: BenK] Nice call Daily Beast. Well, it appears the Daily Beast completely scrubbed their original article claiming that their inside sources told them Mitt Romney was running. It appears that they didn't note the change either.

[Extra, Extra Bonus Content: Drew]

Oh, by the way, Mitt is having dinner tonight with.....Chris Christie.

Is there any doubt about what the decision will be? Over the last twenty-four hours, Romney has taken public swipes at both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. He attacked Hillary for her earlier remarks on job creation, echoing a 2012 campaign theme. Romney went after Obama on poverty after the President scoffed at his discussion of the topic.

That doesnt sound like someone about to retire to the sidelines for the rest of this cycle. Its possible that Romney will just decide that hes had enough and hang up the gloves in an hour or so.

There was no need for telling. Jeb is sucking up establishment donors and machine staff like the fat, formless sponge that he is. Willards 2008/2012 Iowa go-to man, David Kochel, will be Jebs campaign manager for example.

Even in 2012 the establishment wasnt very keen on Willard and waited to the last second to unify behind him. It was clear that people like Georgette Mosbacher would drop him the moment they had an alternative named Bush.

114 It's not so much Romney choosing not to run, that's the interest-at-news.

It's who he's going to support that's really going to matter. His not inconsiderable money, organization, donor-lists and relatively high respect and prestige within the middle of the GOP Bell Curve, carry much weight.

He can be a Kingmaker. He can also kick the legs out from many a pretender to the throne.

The Romney Factor has just gone UP in importance, not down.

You'll settle for politicians with vague family political connections that mostly aren't in it for themselves, and think of the people occasionally.

You'll get nepotistic, money grubbing political dynasties like the Bushes, Clintons, and Kennedys. And you'll LIKE it!

277 "Executive experience. Business experience. Does not mean a damn thing if they let the country swing more to left."

Agreed. We're electing a government executive, not a business executive. They may require some similar skills but government isn't a business and can't be run like one. The governors are going to run on it as a plus, the non-governors will cite their lack of foreign policy experience compared to Senators, Reps, etc.. It's a second-tier qualifier.

I think the more important qualifiers are about understanding government's limited role in a functioning free society and how we're well past that - it needs pruned back to core functions, it needs to be held accountable and it needs its books balanced. Our government should be well under 20% of the economy, not pushing 40%.

Rather than handing out lollipops to the middle class, just clear the economic landscape of the choking weeds of Leviathan. Deregulate, leave more money in worker's pockets and let them rebuild the country the same way they built it in the first place.

Sorry, but that description of him is completely opposite of anyone who actually knows or has worked with him.
He's a vibrant , active businessman who isn't the type to sit home and watch grandkids 24/7.
It's one thing to be against him running a political campaign to be elected president. It's another to assign nasty, untrue personal labels to someone who has served as a missionary, has successfully run and recapitalized failing businesses, was brought in last minute to save a failing Olympics and ended them profitably and by all accounts successfully, was elected as a Republican in a Democrat majority state for governor, and then ran unsuccessfully twice for president.
Was his campaign a disappointed last time around? At the end yes. Are some of his viewpoints too close to left for us, Yes.

But as a person, he is acknowledged overwhelmingly as a classy, ethical person who just didn't have the teeth to win a national election.

306 >>It was a ruse. But to what end? From what did it deflect our attention?<<

The game at this point is to throw off the opposition. Look how Democrats have responded to Romney and expended energy, especially when he rank first in polls. It's precious.

Also, for someone in Romney's position, it's also to rebuild name recognition and leverage his resources. He essentially becomes a "kingmaker" within the party.

I know its popular to bash Romney, but politics aside he is a really good person. That's demonstrably true as oppose to the visceral hate and pedestrian comments implying he is a phony. In that regard, he will ultimately help the party in the best way he can. He has always been a team player and wants the team to win.

321 Whomever the republican nominee is they need to believably and sincerely pivot the immigration conversation from Illegal Amnesty to actual reformation of our immigration policy with an eye towards ease of process but control. If Jose wants to come live and work in America, then he shouldn't have to consider being a slave to cartels to do it. He should also pay taxes. However Ahmed and his buddy who're looking to blow up a few buildings shouldn't be allowed within 5 miles of the coast.

Likewise they need to focus on getting government out of the lives and bedrooms of the people.

Push the fact that the economy is doing as well as it is (which isn't saying much) purely because of the will of the people and our innovation in energy production/drilling.

The GOPe and Kingmakers have their own agenda, and it all has to do with status quo and making money.

They have colluded in creating an economy where the normal person is at a disadvantage, while large corporations get the breaks.

We need our own Agenda.... and IMO it should start with REAL tax reform.... not the tax reform where they pick and choose who wins by more, or less... and call it reform.

370 A lot of us including myself said Romney had no shot at the 2012 nomination because he wasn't conservative enough but the donor class wields a huge amount of influence and did so successfully. One big time big boobed bundler was quoted as saying to conservatives "he's going to be the candidate. Live with it."

They think the last cycle vindicated them. They've also changed rules to consolidate control at the convention and during the primaries and put more aparatchiks in place on the state level. Don't be surprised if they feel confident enough to mount a frontal assault on the Tea Party in 2016 with Jeb the Unifier as standard bearer. They may finally be foolish enough to test their thesis that "conservatives don't have the numbers." Think about it. The donor class has already announced their preference for Jeb and he's easily the most shrill anti-conservative/Tea Party candidate on the slate.

If and when that happens, don't forget how the Republican party got started.

Better foreign relations with world leaders that we actually view as our true allies. And I think as far as the economic domestic issues he'd be top notch.
But I don't think 2014 elections would have shaped out like they did with him as pres, we would not have the senate. Obama FUBARs necessary to pull out that miracle. The ONLY thing I appreciate that Jeb did was to build up our emergency/disaster response. The shit that happened in New Orleans or Jersey after their hurricanes? Never happen like that here. Our emergency management is fricking awesome.

HOWEVER. Everything else was junk. And you're right, his messing around with our education system effed it up royally. The best/worst thing about his education tinkering is that if you follow the money, every single thing he did was done to further enrich Jeb Bush. He is personally invested in all the new testing (FCAT). He is personally invested in the major charter schools organizations here (and I'm not against charter schools in principle, just pointing out he did it not out of a desire to help kids but to put money in his pocket), and now that he's out of office and pushing the common core shit....guess what else he's heavily invested in? That's right. Common core.

And I think as far as the economic domestic issues he'd be top notch."

Another example of what I'm talking about. Obamacare would be gone? You have exactly zilch for evidence to support this claim. Sure, you have what Mitt kinda sort said, but Mitt's said a lot of things. You have to look at evidence, and the evidence is that Ocare is modeled after a Mitt policy in the first damn place.

Keystone? Again, you have a promise from Mitt. What do we know about what Mitt promises? Now, there's a good chance you might have been right. Still doesn't fix the major strikes against Mitt - his record of laying the foundation for Ocare (liberal governing policies) and appointing liberal judges.

Better foreign relations? You're guessing (and I believe you might be right), but you have no evidence, because there is none. Still doesn't outweigh his actual record on domestic liberal fuckups.

Economic issues? Based on what? The fact that he was a good VC? The guy wanted to index minimum wage to inflation, which is precisely to the left of one Barack Hussein Obama.

You know, if his sons want to run for senate in Utah to unseat Lee, that might not be so crazy after all. The RINOS here did political kabuki to partially dismantle the caucus system we normally have; now we still have the caucus, but also anyone with enough money can sidestep it and get into the elections if they so choose. Because knuckledragging citizens cannot be trusted to vote properly I guess.

Which means tons of cash and Romney sons are easy shoe ins. Maybe he is looking for some of that sweet Clinton Global Initiative money? They spend millions on travel alone to schlep the Clintons around, surely they could throw some Romney's sons' way.

454 "But it should be run like one; the fact that it isn't is a big part of
our problem. To a good approximation, government is like a business with
a military and a foreign policy."

That "military" part is the crux of the difference. I understand where you're coming from - efficiency and accountability - but in business those are produced by the environmental pressures of, among other things, competition and a certain kind of scarcity. Government has a "closed market' over a given territory and its share of available resources is only as "scarce" as its willingness and ability to coercively tax its citizens.

Government should be run accountable and efficiently, but it's just not built that way. It's a square peg. accountability/efficiency is a round hole and we need a bigger hammer to make it work, as we must, in that fashion.

He was on a local radio show recently talking of reducing the number of candidates quickly this time, and of a shorter time frame for debates, and of limiting candidates on stage by popularity based on either the last primary or polling or some such.

So front loading your money and making a big splash early is going to be even more important this time around.

I would have lots of confidence in a Federal government. We don't have one of those. We have a National government- and that's a huge difference.

A Federal Government, because it would be limited to things of a multi-State scope, would be just fine. National defense, one set of immigration laws, etc.

It is precisely because we have a National, and not a Federal, government that things have grown "too hard to govern."

502 Also on government as a business. The "CEO" of the government has to first know that his powers are limited, there are a lot of things people want him to do that aren't even within his proper duties - and communicate that to them effectively. He has to work with a highly interventionist 500+ man board of directors and a 9 person oversight committee unlike anything in the private sector. And a lot of his "competitors" have nuclear bombs and sarin gas (and some are batshit crazy).

Accountability in government - yes. Efficiency - yes. But the executive needs a lot of help to achieve those goals. Even efficiency initiatives that start in good faith have foundered almost immediately. The bureaucrats strangle them in the cribs.

The best CEO on the planet has less chance of reforming DC than the most average politician because politics ain't bean-dip. At the minimum, to achieve accountability and efficiency (by reforming or abolishing civil service as we know it, for one thing) you need the public and Congress. Welding those coalitions together isn't something in which a businessman necessarily has an advantage.

A President who's been in the private sector is helpful because he understands economics compared to an ivory tower econ crit theory egghead, but so does anyone who's read and understood Hayek. A business savvy Prez will have more aptitude at picking good subordinates, delegating, holding them responsible, etc compared to an academic as well. But once you compare the pros and cons, the lesson to take away sounds more like "don't elect an academic" than "elect a CEO."

Romney was the only credible candidate, Newt and Santorum were joke candidates. I would have voted the same way in the primary if I had to do it again.

BTW, I still don't see how Jeb win it. What state does he win first? The influence of money is not nearly what it once was in campaigns that relied on big TV ad buys.

Not my pick in 2016, but 1000x better than Obama has been."

Yes, and I think the way he went about it this time, in his nerdy, ambitious-but-logical way of assessing and then declining, shows he would have been a good "Decider" and a classy President. America would have been a better place with him in there instead of Obama.

550 "After the fiscal collapse (ten to twenty years), I think there will be an effort to keep the Republic together but it will fail..."

I love Texas too but can't agree with this take. The initial part of the fiscal collapse has already happened, and the depression will continue. We will work our way out of that by 2022-2025 (8-10 short years!).

The Republic will survive. Humans are incredibly adaptable and we are already getting used to being in a depression. Most people don't even realize it.

@397 So what is each candidate's "dog on the roof" that the media will latch onto?

Walker- No college degree

Cruz- Birtherism?

Paul - Son of a Wackadoodle

Perry - Indicted

Palin - Being Palin

Rubio- ?

Others -?

-------------------------------------

Walker: Another white guy from the Midwest

Cruz --craaaaazy Tea Partier

Paul --IS a Wackadoodle (if the shoe fits)

Perry --Not another TEXAN! (twitters of East coast entitled elitists)

Palin --Oh she sees RUSSIA from her house!

Rubio --Token Hispanic, another Republican MAN telling us what to do with our wimmen parts
---------------------------------------------

Walker: Union buster bully, hates wimmen.
Cruz: White Hispanic, foil hat tea-bagger.
Paul: Southern and White, racist son of a foil hat racist.
Perry: BDS flashbacks, mean to Brown people and wimmen.
Palin: She's a witch! Burn her!
Rubio: White Hispanic traitor to Cuba, pro-life *gasp*.

I never cease to be amazed at the stuff people latch onto. I've never even heard this one before about Romney. It ranks right up there with Sarah Palin saying she could see Russia from her house.

She never said it but now it is repeated constantly as if she did.

Christie v. Warren?
"

It won't come to that. Christie is un-nominatable. His Republican negatives are too high. One of the sites (538?) has an article on that, how Palin and Christie have the highest negatives in the GOP electorate. Neither has a chance of winning the nomination. After Palin's bomb of a speech, she's going nowhere.

I don't think Rand Paul does either, he will just draw enough conservatives to help Jeb Bush win, but his negatives arent that high (like his Dad's were).

I seriously think its down to:
Walker, Bush in top tier;
Cruz, Perry, Jindal, Paul in 2nd tier;
any other governors who run 3rd tier.

555 I guess that what we (yeah, I'm daring to speak for most of us) want is someone from the Country Class, not the Ruling Class. Someone who will serve the country, not their own interests.

So what I'm sensing here is a desire for someone who hasn't proven themselves willing to sell out YOUR principles for THEIR gain. (sorry, I haven't bothered figuring out how to italicize).

We all have our faves out of the list available, and I guess Costanza is right....we're going to fight for team Hot Dog and bash team Pepperoni right up to dinner time.

I think the PTB depend on the rabble being disorganized. It makes things easier for them, and when the fighting is over and their guy wins, they can rightfully say that we had a choice, and the best man won. They'd be wrong and know it, but try to prove it.

558 @537 - A Jeb administration would be more big-government GOP, somewhere between brother and daddy and Dick Nixon. The second coming of Nelson Rockefeller. The people who gave us the EPA, the TSA, NCLB, ADA, etc.

A Warren administration would at least give us the entertainment of watching her try to kiss up to both the banksters on which national Democrats depend for their very existence, and her base who wants to see them flayed in public.

I don't believe any future Democrat administration will be - could possibly be - as actively hostile to American interests in foreign policy as the current one. And I don't think a Warren - or even a Clinton - administration would have their DOJ pursuing quite so overt a policy of race war, though of course personnel is policy and a lot of evil has crept through the door in the past few years.

I do not want to see King Bush III get the nomination. We have far better available and it's important to stop this dynasty shit now.

I would be happy to see the Worlds Fakest Indian get her party's nod, since she embodies pretty much all the contradictions in her party's stitched-together coalition.

You have a definite point there. Christie will have to answer for that, and it will be a warning that he sometimes does indeed put politics over principle. (Big shock for a governor eh? ) But I confess to a "anybody Republican" mentality right now, since the Democrats' hard left turn has made them currently dangerous to the health of the Republic.

563 "106 There's a depressing thought. if you can't obtain decent results from an

make progress on agencies and powerful interests that already exist and

Define "progress".
If Romney gets in there, he would run the socialist trains on time and make sure the agencies are efficient in oppression of us.

If Cruz gets in there, he would see the DOJ agents for what they are, agents of the leftist agenda, and 'progress' would mean progress in dismantling the institutional leftism at places like DOJ, state dept, Energy Dept, etc.

Romney is clueless to the political campaign consultant rip-off game,

self-interested consultants.

The R's take Congress but will say that they need the WH to be able to get anything done.

Jeb is they're favorite unwinnable candidate.

Jed loses to the brain damaged Hillary.

R's in Congress complain that they are unable to get anything done without the WH.

So 4 more years that we stand by and support a mess of cowards that don't really want a R in the WH so they can not have to actually do anything that may come off as sane as to not piss off the media.

Nah, remember 2004-2005? They had House, Senate, and WH and 5 votes on the Supreme Court, but they couldn't do anything with polls and networks and Ivy League universities and Pluto not being a planet anymore... long slow march of institutions... don't jeopardize the fragile majority...somebody else has to make it necessary for Republicans to deliver or be lynched...etc etc etc until they lost Congress, and then they went back to whining about not having total power.
