We won't have Mitt Romney to kick around anymore.
After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee. Let me give you some of my thinking. First, I am convinced that with the help of the people on this call, we could win the nomination. Our finance calls made it clear that we would have enough funding to be more than competitive. With few exceptions, our field political leadership is ready and enthusiastic about a new race. And the reaction of Republican voters across the country was both surprising and heartening. I know that early poll numbers move up and down a great deal during a campaign, but we would have no doubt started in a strong position. One poll out just today shows me gaining support and leading the next closest contender by nearly two to one. I also am leading in all of the four early states. So I am convinced that we could win the nomination, but fully realize it would have been difficult test and a hard fight.Full statement here. Heartache. Just heartache. He attacked Hillary for her earlier remarks on job creation, echoing a 2012 campaign theme. Romney went after Obama on poverty after the President scoffed at his discussion of the topic.
That doesnt sound like someone about to retire to the sidelines for the rest of this cycle. Its possible that Romney will just decide that hes had enough and hang up the gloves in an hour or so.

There was no need for telling. Jeb is sucking up establishment donors and machine staff like the fat, formless sponge that he is. Willards 2008/2012 Iowa go-to man, David Kochel, will be Jebs campaign manager for example.
Even in 2012 the establishment wasnt very keen on Willard and waited to the last second to unify behind him. It was clear that people like Georgette Mosbacher would drop him the moment they had an alternative named Bush.

A week or so before the 1st debate here in Denver (close to my house) the Obama folks went through the neighborhood handing out lawn signs to supportive residents. They also covered any open roadside space near the debate venue. I contacted the local Romney office ans suggested they do the same just to be sure that people coming in for the debate didn't get the impression that our neighborhood was 100% pro-Obama. They did nothing.

Agreed. We're electing a government executive, not a business executive. They may require some similar skills but government isn't a business and can't be run like one. The governors are going to run on it as a plus, the non-governors will cite their lack of foreign policy experience compared to Senators, Reps, etc.. It's a second-tier qualifier.
I think the more important qualifiers are about understanding government's limited role in a functioning free society and how we're well past that - it needs pruned back to core functions, it needs to be held accountable and it needs its books balanced. Our government should be well under 20% of the economy, not pushing 40%.
Rather than handing out lollipops to the middle class, just clear the economic landscape of the choking weeds of Leviathan. Deregulate, leave more money in worker's pockets and let them rebuild the country the same way they built it in the first place.

Sorry, but that description of him is completely opposite of anyone who actually knows or has worked with him.
He's a vibrant , active businessman who isn't the type to sit home and watch grandkids 24/7.
It's one thing to be against him running a political campaign to be elected president. It's another to assign nasty, untrue personal labels to someone who has served as a missionary, has successfully run and recapitalized failing businesses, was brought in last minute to save a failing Olympics and ended them profitably and by all accounts successfully, was elected as a Republican in a Democrat majority state for governor, and then ran unsuccessfully twice for president.
Was his campaign a disappointed last time around? At the end yes. Are some of his viewpoints too close to left for us, Yes.
But as a person, he is acknowledged overwhelmingly as a classy, ethical person who just didn't have the teeth to win a national election.

The game at this point is to throw off the opposition. Look how Democrats have responded to Romney and expended energy, especially when he rank first in polls. It's precious.
Also, for someone in Romney's position, it's also to rebuild name recognition and leverage his resources. He essentially becomes a "kingmaker" within the party.
I know its popular to bash Romney, but politics aside he is a really good person. That's demonstrably true as oppose to the visceral hate and pedestrian comments implying he is a phony. In that regard, he will ultimately help the party in the best way he can. He has always been a team player and wants the team to win.

But I don't think 2014 elections would have shaped out like they did with him as pres, we would not have the senate. Obama FUBARs necessary to pull out that miracle. And think of how bad the charges were against Bush during Katrina of being unfeeling and elitist and racist? The ONLY thing I appreciate that Jeb did was to build up our emergency/disaster response. The shit that happened in New Orleans or Jersey after their hurricanes? Never happen like that here. Our emergency management is fricking awesome.
HOWEVER. Everything else was junk. And you're right, his messing around with our education system effed it up royally. The best/worst thing about his education tinkering is that if you follow the money, every single thing he did was done to further enrich Jeb Bush. He is personally invested in all the new testing (FCAT). He is personally invested in the major charter schools organizations here (and I'm not against charter schools in principle, just pointing out he did it not out of a desire to help kids but to put money in his pocket), and now that he's out of office and pushing the common core shit....guess what else he's heavily invested in? Another example of what I'm talking about. Obamacare would be gone? You have exactly zilch for evidence to support this claim. Sure, you have what Mitt kinda sort said, but Mitt's said a lot of things. You have to look at evidence, and the evidence is that Ocare is modeled after a Mitt policy in the first damn place.
Keystone? Again, you have a promise from Mitt. What do we know about what Mitt promises? Now, there's a good chance you might have been right. Still doesn't fix the major strikes against Mitt - his record of laying the foundation for Ocare (liberal governing policies) and appointing liberal judges.
Better foreign relations? You're guessing (and I believe you might be right), but you have no evidence, because there is none. Still doesn't outweigh his actual record on domestic liberal fuckups.
Economic issues? Based on what? The fact that he was a good VC? The guy wanted to index minimum wage to inflation, which is precisely to the left of one Barack Hussein Obama.

I understand where you're coming from - efficiency and accountability - but in business those are produced by the environmental pressures of, among other things, competition and a certain kind of scarcity. Government has a "closed market' over a given territory and its share of available resources is only as "scarce" as its willingness and ability to coercively tax its citizens.
Government should be run accountable and efficiently, but it's just not built that way. It's a square peg. accountability/efficiency is a round hole and we need a bigger hammer to make it work, as we must, in that fashion.

He was on a local radio show recently talking of reducing the number of candidates quickly this time, and of a shorter time frame for debates, and of limiting candidates on stage by popularity based on either the last primary or polling or some such.
So front loading your money and making a big splash early is going to be even more important this time around.
I have no idea if this is how you get to the best candidate (I suspect not), but that's how it's going to be.

A Federal Government, because it would be limited to things of a multi-State scope, would be just fine. National defense, one set of immigration laws, etc.

Accountability in government - yes. Efficiency - yes. But the executive needs a lot of help to achieve those goals. Even efficiency initiatives that start in good faith have foundered almost immediately. The bureaucrats strangle them in the cribs.
The best CEO on the planet has less chance of reforming DC than the most average politician because politics ain't bean-dip. At the minimum, to achieve accountability and efficiency (by reforming or abolishing civil service as we know it, for one thing) you need the public and Congress. Welding those coalitions together isn't something in which a businessman necessarily has an advantage.
A President who's been in the private sector is helpful because he understands economics compared to an ivory tower econ crit theory egghead, but so does anyone who's read and understood Hayek. A business savvy Prez will have more aptitude at picking good subordinates, delegating, holding them responsible, etc compared to an academic as well. But once you compare the pros and cons, the lesson to take away sounds more like "don't elect an academic" than "elect a CEO."

I'll say this, Romney was a good man. He wasn't a rock ribbed conservative, but he was center-right and I think he would have made a great President.
I didn't want him to run again, but I think conservatives had some delusional parallel universe where they thought Reagan was running against Romney in the 2012 primary and we somehow backed Gerald Ford. Romney was the only credible candidate, Newt and Santorum were joke candidates. I would have voted the same way in the primary if I had to do it again.
BTW, I still don't see how Jeb win it. What state does he win first? The influence of money is not nearly what it once was in campaigns that relied on big TV ad buys.

I love Texas too but can't agree with this take. The initial part of the fiscal collapse has already happened, and the depression will continue. We will work our way out of that by 2022-2025 (8-10 short years!).
The Republic will survive. Humans are incredibly adaptable and we are already getting used to being in a depression. Most people don't even realize it.

One of the sites (538?) has an article on that, how Palin and Christie have the highest negatives in the GOP electorate. Neither has a chance of winning the nomination. After Palin's bomb of a speech, she's going nowhere.
I don't think Rand Paul does either, he will just draw enough conservatives to help Jeb Bush win, but his negatives arent that high (like his Dad's were).
I seriously think its down to:
Walker, Bush in top tier;
Cruz, Perry, Jindal, Paul in 2nd tier;
any other governors who run 3rd tier.

I think the PTB depend on the rabble being disorganized. It makes things easier for them, and when the fighting is over and their guy wins, they can rightfully say that we had a choice, and the best man won. They'd be wrong and know it, but try to prove it.

A Warren administration would at least give us the entertainment of watching her try to kiss up to both the banksters on which national Democrats depend for their very existence, and her base who wants to see them flayed in public.
I don't believe any future Democrat administration will be - could possibly be - as actively hostile to American interests in foreign policy as the current one. And I don't think a Warren - or even a Clinton - administration would have their DOJ pursuing quite so overt a policy of race war, though of course personnel is policy and a lot of evil has crept through the door in the past few years.
I do not want to see King Bush III get the nomination. We have far better available and it's important to stop this dynasty shit now.
I would be happy to see the Worlds Fakest Indian get her party's nod, since she embodies pretty much all the contradictions in her party's stitched-together coalition.
