Is The GOP Going To Confirm A Woman As Attorney General Who Thinks Illegal Aliens Have "A Right" To Work In This Country? Spoiler: Of Course They Are.

During yesterday's confirmation hearing for Loretta Lynch to be Attorney General, Jeff Sessions of Alabama asked her if she thinks illegal immigrants have the right to work in the US.

Well, Senator, I believe that the right and the obligation to work is one that’s shared by everyone in this country regardless of how they came here. And certainly, if someone here, regardless of status, I would prefer that they be participating in the workplace than not participating in the workplace…

She'd prefer that people who are here illegally continue to break the law by working? Fantastic!

Surely this, and her support for the legality of Obama's executive amnesty program (the one Republicans say violates the Constitution), is disqualifying. I mean, you can't have a someone who doesn't support enforcing the law serving as Attorney General. Wasn't stopping this kind of lawlessness one of the main campaign promises of Republicans less than three months ago?

Here's the new Chairman of the Judiciary Committee bringing the hammer down on the idea an amnesty supporter like Lynch can be confirmed by the new GOP Senate.

“As far as I know, Ms. Lynch has nothing to do with the Justice Department problems, but as the new attorney general, she can fix them,” said Grassley (R-Iowa).

Oh.

It's not the hill to fight on guys. But the next one? Oh you bet they'll ready to fight! You know, unless there's another hill and a better fight to keep their powder dry for.

Of course Team GOP apologists have a perfectly reasonable argument for supporting Lynch...conservatives are stupid.

Here's the problem with the "and keep Holder" argument that GOP officials other than Rubin are already floating.

One of the arguments in favor of a GOP Senate was that it would serve as a check on Obama should he have another Supreme Court nomination or two. Sure a Republican Senate would cave and confirm his picks but at the least it would force him to send up more moderate candidates. Well, if you're argument is "we'll stop the extremists" you've kind of given away the game that you won't if you confirm Lynch. Here's a woman who is saying that the policy the GOP is supposedly most upset about (spoiler: they aren't really), what's Obama's motivation to send up a moderate Supreme Court nominee? You really think he'll be so afraid of the GOP that he'll give up his last chance to send a hard core leftist to SCOTUS for life after the GOP gives Lynch a pass?

And remember the GOP complained about eliminating the filibuster for executive nominations but they didn't put it back in. It's almost as if Mitch McConnell and crew were more interesting in making sure Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and the rest couldn't make their lives unpleasant by forcing confrontations with Obama. Almost.

Far longer than that.

The rise of government by bureaucracy dates back at least to the New Deal. All the alphabet regulatory agencies Congress created and empowered was the beginning of the end.

As for power, yes, legislators want that. Responsibility? Um, not so much.

So they are happy to do the rough drafts and let the executive and courts take the heat for how it works out in the real world.

Already tried that. Spent a bit on a hypoallergenic formula, didn't do much.

Compared to some of our friends kids it's not really that bad, she just really wants to be held between like 4PM and midnight. As long as someone is holding her she'll either be calm and awake or sleep.

Put her in a crib though and...well...yeah.

Given that she is my wife and my kid she also gets gas. Doc recommended gas drops and they do a pretty good job too as long as we don't shirk on giving them to her with the evening feedings (she seems fine all morning and afternoon, so we can pass on it then.)

120 tsrblke-is your laundry room large enough for you to pull a chair in? If so, you might try putting the little 'ette in her car seat, and putting the car seat on the dryer while it is running. The combination of the warmth, the vibration and the white noise works wonders for fussy babies-I used it for my daughter, who was constantly sick as a baby, and it was one of the few things that helped to calm her. My washer/dryer was in the kitchen at the time, so it worked out great-she could get some sleep, and I could cook meals, do laundry, and tend to my 2 year old.

The mommy sway is also good-holding her on your shoulder and gently swaying. If you can put a warm towel on your shoulder, that can help too.

Actually a whole swath of our friends had similar problems, so they've been great help too.

Funny thing is my dissertation mentor just had a kid too. And we were talking and I mentioned that in the hospital they basically lie to you about the benefits of breast feeding (in that the oversell would be fraudulent in any other industry.)

Mentor brings that idea up as an anecdote in a class we teach researchers/doctors.
What does one of the researchers do? Researches how to get more women to breast feed.
Seriously.

She didn't give no flack though, in fact I think she feared for a second she just walked into a minefield.

That never ceases to amaze me. Never received any flak on food choice, but when my son was around 6 mos old he was a delightfully roly-poly chunk (which is *normal*) and total strangers felt compelled to make comments like. "My, isn't he...healthy" or "Aren't you well fed?!"
Like, WTF, you think we should put him on a diet when he's tripling his birth weight in the 1st 12 mos. of his like?

What, praytell, is the point? Assuaging your feelings? Making it seem like your side is "fighting?" The bottom line is that any AG appointment will do exactly what Obama wants. That's their fucking job, and they wouldn't be nominated in the first place if they weren't loyalists.

So no gain, and giving the enemy a "Republicans are still sexist and racist" weapon to help force their broken down old crone of choice into the presidency in 2016.

Fighter-types might argue that a best-case scenario is where every single radical nominee is voted down. What do you have then? Eric fucking Holder in office for eight years, and a legitimate argument of obstructionism. Fantastic. And the ESTABLISHMENT is stupid?

Confirm her. Let the firebrands breathe their fire and score points with conservatives, and even make good arguments about how much Obama sucks. Play it up, and try to get good sound bites. But there's a reason Congressional leadership isn't eager to "die on these hills." They're strategically worthless.

Perhaps you history buffs will recall that a major contributing factor to the Germans' eastern front defeat was Hitler's orders to never retreat. Entire corps were surrounded and destroyed because they were forbidden from moving backwards. What might have been a stalemate turned into total collapse. This is the same foolishness. "Fightfightfightdiediedie!" does not win wars.

The party leadership wants to win in 2016. They have to, or they cannot undo Obama's damage. Can. Not. Even if the Republicans lose ZERO seats in Congress in 2016 (basically impossible), they HAVE to have the Presidency. They cannot override vetos themselves, and the Democrats won't break ranks in sufficient numbers (socialists are like that). And so every piece of shit policy, regulation, and law enacted from 2009-2016 will remain intact and become a permanent part of the fabric of this once-great nation. American decline will be permanent, and people will begin to speak more seriously of secession and civil war.

The 2016 Presidency is what matters. That's it. That is everything. That is, honest to God, the last chance for America. Everything else is subordinate to that. The person elected in 2016 will likely get two or more Supreme Court appointments; including liberal seats. If something will theoretically help a Republican win in 2016, do it. If it will theoretically hurt, don't do it.

And I can't believe I need to say this to a bunch of free-marketeers, veterans, and other assorted hard-jawed types, but your *feelings* don't matter. If you stamp your feet and huff and refuse to vote for those dumb Republicans, with their dumb rational long-term political calculations and dumb national strategies that don't pay enough attention to your feelings, and just want to watch the country burn under President Hillary... you deserve an ass kicking.

2016 could be the dawn of a conservative renaissance. The Reagan revolution came after only four years of Jimmy Carter's incompetence, helped along by the fact that Jimmah wasn't black and the USSR was still around. If we don't fuck it up, the rebirth of opportunity in this country after Obama could be glorious. We would have total control of the federal government. Obama will be relegated to the shit-heap of history as a totally repudiated, failed executive. The discrediting of the blue model will be almost total, the Democrats' political bench will be empty, and we will have a true mandate to rip the socialist guts out of the government and remake it in our own image.

Just think about that for a minute. Destroy the EPA. Re-write the tax code and eliminate the global taxation regime. Re-invigorate Defense with a new strategic stance. Purge the IRS of everyone who ever even heard of using it as a political weapon and said nothing. Repeal Sarbanes-Oxley, Obamacare, and about fifty thousand ridiculous regulations. Get federal idiots out of college campus matters of justice. Kill Common Core. Get spending under control. If you're feeling petulant, limit the deductions for state income taxes (squeeze rich blue voters, the bastards). RE-WRITE LAWS GOVERNING UNIONS.

It's the fucking promised land.

But some people are ready to burn it all down for the sake of their feelings. It's ridiculous.

I wrote this like an essay because I'm going to work and can't stick around to debate this. Sorry for anyone who wants to call me an asshole. But I think dumb idea have to be called dumb ideas, and then explained in detail why they are dumb, for polemics to have an effect.

I remember our first kid had what we thought was "cholic" something awful. (In retrospect, it was probably the acid reflux she was diagnosed with years later.)
I remember spending many a night, carrying her in a football hold, walking around her room in circles, wearing a path in the carpet, slowly getting her to calm down so she could sleep.I honestly don't know where I found the patience, and I doubt I could do that now.

The only logical reason I can think of is that they want the **trappings** of power- the pension, the staff, the doting press, the title, the money that comes with all the speaking engagements and graduation ceremonies and book releases, etc and so on- without having to accept the *responsibility* for anything that happens. I mean, how nice is it to be treated like a lord or a lady without having to actually oversee and manage the land you're supposed to be in charge of?

The politicians are our new "landed" class- our very own aristocracy- and they want that life where they can live in luxury and leisure and never have to actually *do* anything outside of initially obtaining that title of Senator or Congressman.

Yeah thankfully this is a step below colic. She's harder to calm than she was just a week ago, but not at all impossible.

I would say that it is the job of the Republicans to prevent 'radical nominees' from being appointed, that it is the job of the Republicans to make sure the appointee to the post of AG actually be someone who respects both the law and the Constitution. I would also say that it is this motherfucking concern with optics and what the ought-to-be-swinging-from-lammposts Dems are going to say - as if they would ever applaud a GOP-er for anything - is precisely what is wrong with the party. Personally, I care rather deeply that the Attorney General of the United States believe that his/her role is to enforce the laws of the United States. That's what I care about. If 1,000 nominees get rejected, so be it. That, after all, is why that pesky advise and consent provision exists. The Senate is not there to rubber stamp nominees. It is there to prevent those who are unqualified from being sworn into office.

What do I intend to accomplish? Here. I'll type slowly so that you can understand it.

I want the foundations of this country not to be destroyed. I want our elected officials to do their jobs of preventing the foundations of this country from being destroyed. I want the party that demands fealty from me to show that it will exercise the power given to it to prevent the foundations of the country from being destroyed. That is what I want to be accomplished.

But hey mean people will say mean things omg we can't have that. Because that's what's important.

Spare me the oh oh oh but then the Senators won't get reelected and the Republicans will lose control of the Senate again and see see even worse people will get put through!

What possible motivation do I have to care if people who refuse to take seriously their position get voted out of office? If an elected official refuses to use the power given to him/her to push forward the positions that said elected official was elected to move forward, then I have no obligation, morally or practically, to continue my support of said elected official.

The sky will fall arguments would be more persuasive if the Republicans would ever bother to point out that what fell was an acorn.

That was my biggest mistake with my oldest when he was a baby. And I was half nuts because of it. Things it exponentially better once I figured out it was ok to let him work it out on his own.

This is an extraordinary development - and is not simply more of the same since the New Deal, though it's true that there's beena systematic transfer of power to the administrative state since that time.

The recess appointment thing in the first term was a jaw-dropper and eye-opener (did I forget any other expressions like this?). Not a chance of any president trying to pull that in recent history - both parties in the Senate would have crushed any WH that tried. This time? The Dems just sat there in silence. Those who have not spent years actually working in the Senate cannot easily appreciate how amazing that whole chapter was, and what a completely different world it represented then the long historic norm.

Yeah, right now one of our biggest problems is that she wakes up moving from arms to crib (or bassinet or whatever we're using at that moment.)

So the whole "see if she stops thing" is mostly because once she's out, she's usually pretty good for a while. But if we pick her up there's only a 50% chance or so we can get her into the crib successfully.

Which is also why if we're just watching TV or something and not uncomfortable we often just let her be.

305 Watching Detroit news this morning. Several years ago, the Detroit police raided a house that was harboring a wanted drug fugitive. When the cops kicked in the doors and entered, there were women, grandmas, and a couple of little kids in addition to the gang bangers. One of the officer's gun discharged , killing a little girl who was lying on the couch.

The house members, including the little girl, were black. The officer was white.

This raid was being filmed by a reality TV show, but they were on the sidewalk when it went down, so no film.

The officer said that the grandma came over to him and grabbed his gun, causing him to inadvertantly fire. Grandma, of course, says no such thing happened, that officer just fired his gun off, killing the girl.

Trial #1 ended in hung jury. Trial #2 ended in hung jury, and included the judge(a black female) dismissing the prosecutor's charges of voluntary manslaughter. The jury was hung on whether officer had discharged the gun recklessly-officer is steadfastly sticking to his story that grandma grabbed his weapon. That possiibilty was bolstered by grandma coming unglued on the stand and screaming that officer was a murderer, that he killed her little baby while she was being escorted out(picture Hardcore Pawn). Trial almost ended in mistrial there.

Yesterday, the prosecutors office announced that they would not be seeking a third trial(imagine that) against the officer.

So this morning, a grandpa, or uncle or some related older male was interviewed by the local media. The family is filing a petition with the U.S Dept. of Justice asking Eric Holder(whom they say they have spoken personally with during the trials) to begin civil rights violation proceedings against the officer and DPD.

See what Eric Holder has done for our country? And I'm sure Loretta Lynch will do the same.....

The GOP gains from fighting on issues where it can take the correct and popular side in several ways (duh). It gives its own supporters some reason to thing there's a point to their (GOP's) existence and presence in govt. It organizes and generates and validates widespread popular sentiment (in this case, a very salient one, amnesty, opposed by super-majorities, and ardently so, of most demographics).

And why can't the GOP win a nomination fight? How many votes need to confirm again, Einstein?

You completely misrepresent the import of the LIV. They will be utterly indifferent to an AG nominee being rejected. Or two. Or three. The inattention of the populace is a license toact and govern and fight, not a bar to it.
