Mike Huckabee: I've Got All Sorts of Strong Opinions About How You Live Your Life

There was a Peanuts cartoon I remember. Linus was watching TV, and, without a word, Lucy entered the panel, walked in front of Linus, and turned off the TV.

"You shouldn't be watching this program," Lucy stated with Lucy-like certitude.

"Just what I always wanted," Linus said to himself. "My own personal censor."

Well, Mike Huckabee wants you to know he's got some opinions about your use of spicy language.

During an appearance on the Iowa radio program "Mickelson in the Morning," last Friday (comments at the 6:00 mark), Huckabee said that he found it "trashy" for a woman to curse in the workplace.

Host Jan Mickelson asked Huckabee, a Republican flirting with a 2016 presidential run, whether the former governor had experienced any "culture shock" by traveling from Arkansas to New York to host his own show on Fox News.

"Absolutely," Huckabee said, before explaining the differences in profanity usage between the South and the Northeast.

"In a business meeting ... in Iowa, you would not have people who would just throw the f-bomb and use gratuitous profanity in a professional setting," Huckabee said. "In New York, not only do the men do it, but the women do it!"

Tell me more about what you remember of the Techno-City, Grandpa Wanderer.

"This is worse than locker-room talk," Huckabee added. "This would be considered totally inappropriate to say these things in front of a woman and for a woman to say them in a professional setting. ... As we would say in the South: 'That's just trashy.'"

That's terrific. It's the height of manhood to begin carrying on like a 90 year old grandmother.

53 Yes, Huckabee is dirt, but he has a point.

There was a woman at my lab who felt it was edgy and made a statement to say f*** in meetings. I told her supervisor that I would be up on charges if I did that in the same forum, and if he didn't stop her, I would file a complaint. He did. The cursing was bad, but it was really just the utter gratuitousness of it and the double standard applied to its use that I couldn't stand.

Regardless, what's the big deal? Huckabee was asked for a difference and he gave one. He didn't call for censorship (that I know of). It was just his opinion.

And yes, he's a complete twit.

And it's not surprising that a Southern Baptist would notice a difference in his climate when going from Southern Baptist World to NYC News Office Land. And one of the differences might well be the saltiness of the language.

Am I supposed to be upset at the word "trashy?" Is that why I'm supposed to be offended? 'Cause I'm not.

Lookit, like me, you were probably brought up in a Do As I Say Not As I Do household.

The ideal is no vulgarity. If you can't admit this, you're a barbarian.

We all cuss without good cause. Teaching our young ones not to cuss, however, is always the right thing to do because it makes for a more genteel society, for which is something a thriving civilization always strives.

If I meet a woman who curses a lot ... I actually do find her kinda trashy. I have a double standard with cursing men vs cursing women. And I'm pretty cool with that.

I mean, if you had Al Sharpton type Democrats constantly running and getting airtime saying crazy things, eventually people start associating the Democrat Party with these types of candidates.

It's not that I have a problem with these views, I probably agree with most of them, the difference is Huckabee is not a televangelist. he's running as President of the United States and selling this as "conservatism".

Unfortunately, too many people associate conservative political ideology with extreme religious views and how they are inserted into public policy.

He shares Santorum's fatal flaw - I'm not saying it's universal to So Cons, just these two poster boy not-so-hardy perennial candidates: he can't seem to resist the red cape on low-priority shit. The media matodors these guys into some tangential discussion on profanity or bestiality every damned time. They know it's going to happen, but they just have to say something instead of having some pat blow-off response and moving on to stating their talking points and message.

There are a million things I don't like about today's culture, politics, etc.. I'm not running for office. Nevertheless, I can get through two minutes of speaking on a topic without being drawn into the high weeds by off-topic efforts by my interlocutor - especially when I know everyone holding a microphone considers it their sacred duty to American Progress to make me sound like an ass-clown.

I don't see it as pro-swearing so much as revulsion towards Huck's well known love of scolding. I don't want that from anyone other than my mother, certainly not my president.

Plus, Huck is lying and pandering, something he's also very good at. I've been in many meetings in the northeast and NYC in particular and the idea that people sit around dropping f-bombs and its worse than a locker room is absurd. NYers and north easterners in general may be more direct than southerns but we also know damn well what "bless your heart" really means.

303 Anything I might add has been covered; special kudos to Maet's remark on proper use of cusswords.

I have no use for Huckabee whatsoever, but Ace's article struck me as funny. Was Ace putting us on?

I wonder if you took the folks who, like me, think what Huckabee was quoted as saying, per se, is true and ordinary and straight out of my grandfather's rulebook and most of my neighbors would agree with him about business decorum, contrasted with those who, like Ace, pull their hair and think a Christian Theocracy is imminent because Huck noted this - would the two groups show a distinct regional disparity? But what do I know? I'm an old phart and still hold the door for the ladies.

But, the biggest problem is, children who never learned how to wield a cussword. Fortunately, I was taught while young, by a large rock thrown by my step-brother landing on my skull. Released my inner sailor. Said words I didn't even know I knew.

It's not what he said that's the issue. The issue is why did he even say anything about it?! Yeah, I know he was asked a question, but the proper response is,

"y'know Mr. MFM propagandist, the country is about to go belly up as a result of big government gone mad while the world is experiencing the opening salvos of World War 3 while Democrats have destroyed our ability to both defend our borders and project power to protect our allies and our interests. That being said, he's not advocating anybody censoring anybody - he's just offering a personal opinion, and he's RIGHT. In the Peanuts cartoon cited, Lucy is using FORCE to push her point. Huckabee is not only doing no such thing, but he is no way advocating such a thing.

That said, the people who say all workplaces aren't alike have a good point. I was getting rid of some junk today and had to go exchange a welding tank. Well, & there was the time Missouri sent terrorists into Kansas to kill people & burn the homes of those who opposed slavery. & virtually all the volunteers from Missouri ended up fighting for the Confederacy. He wrote this for a reason...

http://tinyurl.com/lg6x96s

Now herein it discusses the theory he was using the FI as an avatar to slag A Hamilton, and there is at a minimum something to that but he was AWFULLY fond of the running scarlet until he realized "I am the man now"

"My own affections have been deeply wounded by some of the martyrs to
the cause, but rather than it should have failed, I would have seen half
the earth desolated. Were there but an Adam Eve left in every
country, left free, it would be better than as it now is."

//Thomas Jefferson

I have deep feelings on this given Marx's affinity for the FI as basis for his little demonic brayings...

Focusing on bullsh*t that we can't make laws about anyway scores an own goal. Politicians need to stay in their lane. This is how we got into this mess. I'm not plugged into Pharma, but I'm assuming that the Holy Grail of private sector medical RD is curing cancer, and that it's not still around for lack of funding, but because cancer operates on a very deep and complex level that requires a shitload of time and effort, as well as money, to understand.

I'm continually amazed by precisely how little we know about first-principles functioning of life (in general) and the human body (in particular). It seems that we don't even know what we don't know, modern medicine being little more than the science of very large data sets.

For one thing, there's too much money to be made for the one who gets there first on cancer, fusion, etc.. for collusion to hold things back forever. I mean honestly, have we really fallen into this slovenly state of being where there is no shame in wearing pajamas to the movie theater and people just say the most disgusting things in public LOUDLY without even considering for ONE MOMENT that others don't want to hear ya talk about the b***h that you f***ed last night. Josey Wales might disagree. Although that's historical fiction, the basic fact was that Missourians, living in a slave state, tended to be Confederate in their sympathies, although Missouri was knocked out of the war early on.

458 rickb -- you are correct that Missouri and Kentucky are represented on the Confederate Battle Flag. That is not the "Stars and Bars." The Stars and Bars was the official flag of the CSA.

BTW, Delaware and Maryland were also slave states, but did not secede (and thus were not subject to the Emancipation Proclamation). Kentucky was invaded by the Confederacy in 1863 to open a new front but the invasion was unsustainable from a logistic standpoint and was withdrawn. Tis is right around the time West Virginia seceded from Virginia and joined the Union.

What's your favorite/least favorite food, color, song etc. Sure they jumped on GW Bush's dislike of broccoli because he's a Republican. I'm sure nobody voted against him because they were outraged broccoli lovers.

As plenty of people have noted, there are lots of reasons for a conservative to vote against Huckabee, so this is pretty much a moot point.

I'm not in favor of asking someone to completely erase their personality because they're running for office. Where do you think unethical, deceitful, and criminal behavior gets it start? What does it mean to be civilized?

It means one follows limits on your behavior. By doing so, it is actually quite freeing. You don't spend a lot of time trying to outcuss, out-outrage, and outshock others in an attempt to get noticed or appear to be top dog.
You spend your time doing not only productive things , but in reality, you garner much more respect.

So Huckabee is right about this.

Posted by: Reggie1971 at January 28, 2015 09:48 PM (S11Oq)

558 Oh good lord, no one is suggesting that swearing should be criminalized or be made a misdemeanor or something. One has the freedom to do a lot of things, but that doesn't mean such things should be done. I am pretty sure one has the freedom to fart loudly in the middle of an office meeting, but that probably isn't a good idea. One isn't going to get thrown in jail for picking one's nose on a date at a fine restaurant over a glass of cabernet, but this isn't the kind of behavior that is going to get one a second date. One is also free to clip their toe nails on the subway in the middle of a Tuesday morning commute, but that's probably going to videoed and one will probably end up in some viral video on Youtube as a result. So yeah, go ahead and swear all you want in public, at work, in front of small children as the mom shoots daggers at you with her eyes. Go ahead! You are free to make a fool of yourself, and you are free to wallow in the gutter, but please don't suggest that offensive language or behavior doesn't consequences of a social kind. If I may point out, the supreme court ruled in Bethel School District 403 vs. Fraser that schools have the right to limit the use of swear words in school. An employer also has the right to limit such speech in the work place. Now if people would just stop wearing pajamas pants with flip flops to the mall.

564 He's right. I'm from the west coast, living in the midwest and it IS shocking the degree of F bombs dropped in business from east coast folks. (My DH's company merged with an east coast company, and mixed personnel.) A little goes a long way when it comes to swearing in business. I'd also say, it's the same here in the midwest as it is in the south. Without us having the ability of southerners who can tell you where to go, without using any obscenities at all. It's a freaking southern art form.

And working in healthcare in CA, I NEVER heard the F bomb dropped, not even once. Not at work, anyway. How people spoke in their private lives, I have no idea. At work, it was just NOT done. Completely unprofessional. And trust me, it wasn't because of some religious restraint.

Our society indeed has become more coarse and we're not the better for it. It's not about whether or no you 'can' do it, ti's about whether or not you 'should'.
