Hey, Feds, it's not the guys at the gun shows who are trying to kill you. It's the fucking Mohammedans you refuse to acknowledge. Why the fuck would you think you had the right to track my car simply because it was "near" a gun show. Are you aware that gun shows commonly take place in convention centers, which are commonly located downtown, which means other businesses are nearby and operating? Are you unclear on the concepts of the 4th and 5th amendments? Do you fucking sub-sentients not understand that, as long as it is within the bounds of the law, the Constitution says I can go where I want with whom I want and do what I want and you don't actually get to *know* about it, let alone do anything about it? And why would you track cars "near" gun shows in the first place? Is it your assumption, you retarded paramecium, that everyone who is simply in close proximity to guns is de facto a criminal? that the announcement could only mean that the blogger's digital venture has 'been a disaster.'" Well, Piers is an idiot, but of course that's true. Sullivan's little digital venture was just sour grapes about being fired from the Atlantic. He had a pretty good gig and then the Atlantic decided he wasn't worth it. I think it says more about the cultural Left. He allegedly went lefty over GWBush's refusal to endorse gay marriage. Posted by: Soothsayer is S.I.G. at January 28, 2015 02:29 PM (Q66iK) Actually, I think it was that President Bush was going to act on an issue like candidate Bush had said: gay marriage. You can agree or disagree with Bush's position, but he was remarkably consistent both as a candidate and a president. At that point, Sully went batshit crazy. Even better was during the 2004 election when Sullivan questioned Insty (or someone) for saying that Kerry's position was the same as Bush. Insty linked to Kerry's quote which said something along the lines of "The president's position on this subject are exactly the same", followed by great Insty snark:"This must be some of that fabled nuance I've heard so much about." But, it was his chance to carry a torch and pitchfork in the crusade against he evil racist Trent Lott that really got him going. ("How dare he say anything nice about an old man on his birthday? That man once did something that might be racist. No, not recruit for the KKK--not that racist.") And the final straw was: Gay Marriage. Apparently, some forget that you used to have to have this little thing called a "warrant" before you started gathering evidence on people. And, indeed, even when you were in the "just follow them to see where they go" phase (which *is* legal) you had to have some justification for following that specific person. BUT. I do not grant "reasonable expectation of privacy" as a legal argument. The 4th Amendment is very clear: I am to be secure "In my person" and "in my papers" (that is: the state doesn't get to know what I'm doing with whom, or what I'm writing to whom) absent probable cause to believe I have committed (or I am committing) a crime. "Reasonable expectation of privacy" is weasel words to get around the very clear 4th amendment. I don't care that any average joe on the street could see me- any average joe does not have the coercive power of the State. Moreover, I *do* have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" in that, as an anonymous face on the street, I do not expect people to be taking my picture, listening in on my conversations, and generally tracking my movements. Sullivan was one of the people interviewed for the doc "Best of Enemies," I suspect so they could get a gay person's perspective on the political fracas of the Buckley/Vidal debates, since Vidal was of fluctuating degrees of sexuality and Buckley called him a "queer" on camera. Sullivan managed to sound actually somewhat coherent, though now and then crazy slipped through.
The doc also brought up rumors that Buckley was secretly gay, because of course to the left all conservatives are self loathing hypocrites that cannot possibly actually mean deep down what they say. Still want to review the doc for you guys, but not sure what post would be appropriate to do that. If we had a set weekly movie post on the weekends that would be a given, but we don't. The new ruling means that if you serve on a jury, your name will become public record by the end of the trial at the latest, but the decision that isn’t sitting well with everyone. Those opposed to the ruling argue it will create harassment and other risks for those jurors. While those in support of the decision, like Jana Seiler of West Springfield, told 22News that deciding if someone committed a serious crime or not is a big deal, and they want to know who’s behind making that decision. “I think everybody has a right to know who sat on that jury and made that decision, especially the family of the victim or of the person being accused,” Seiler said. Posted by: @JohnTant at January 28, 2015 02:40 PM (PFy0L) Ohh.... trust me... I know how bad it is... And the idea that any information you give a company is out of your control, and thus public information.... Like your bank account information... or emails... or phone records... and as that information belongs to the company, it can be used by the Federal Government without a warrant.... The only thing saving us at all... is the massive amount of information they have to sift through to find 'yours'.... but that is changing as data mining becomes more mature... Note, every public database, and many free sites.... like... Facebook... goes into a database called Catalist.. run by Harold Ickes... which is there to support Progressive goals (from their own website and mission statement). So, the references to GWB and the beginning of the Iraq war and how things changed because Sullivan used to be relevant reminded me of one of my most powerful example of How Awesome the Internet Is. Did any of you follow Salam Pax? He was an Iraqi who wrote in excellent English and posted from Baghdad. This was massively illegal and dangerous under Saddam, but he kept up really good reporting in the run-up to the war. He was massively anti-Saddam but also not totally pro-war because war is scary and it was about to happen to his city. A lot of his reports clarified things that were (shock!) misreported in the MSM. It was like having an embed. It was one of the power of the intertubes experiences for me. To be clear- considering the considerable rules which govern how a school is supposed to treat children (I will not derail this with how a public school treated my child) I do not have any philosophical problem with requiring a student to have an ID badge with some kind of RFID chip on their person while engaged in school functions (that is: while at school, on field trips, etc.). And I'm the guy who says we don't even treat our children like People, let alone like citizens. While you are at school, the school is acting en loco parentis, and has a whole lot of rights around how they keep track of your child and how they care for them (including discipline, actually). So having them wear ID which has an RFID chip... not a big deal to me. But schools too often don't stop there. Like the kids being monitored via webcam on their school-issued laptops. Or some school district which tried to require that kids wear those same IDs outside of school hours. And that is *not* okay. AllenG: Did you smile at the red light cameras?
*snort* I smiled when cities started doing away with them. My problem with red light cameras is completely different and not related to the 4th amendment (since they only go off when you have actually committed a crime- specifically, running a red light). Though it is worrisome (in a 4th amendment sense) when they are triggered by someone buzzing a light (starting through on yellow, and then the light turns red so the camera takes a shot). Ask them, "Who, in an emergency, will have time to run the entire student body to see where everyone is at?"
Jay vs. shithead department, vol. 73: department places a sign-in book in the lobby for those working after hours. Jay: "Why? " Department: "So that when there's a fire (this being a chemistry department, which had fires on a bimonthly basis, it's 'when,' not 'if') the fire department can tell if there's anyone left in the building." Jay: "But ... you seriously think the fire department is going to catch up on its reading during a fire? There's a raging inferno, and the fire department is going to say "fuck it" and not search because the book says everyone is out? Or, is going to charge into said inferno to a certain death, because the book says not everyone is out, notwithstanding the certainty that people fleeing a burning building won't sign out on their way out? Realistically, the fire department will ... say it with me ... use its judgment and search regardless, if possible, and not search, if it's not possible without undue risk. Right? So either way, the book serves no purpose." Department: "You're always so difficult." Posted by: Jay Guevara at January 28, 2015 03:23 PM (oKE6c) 372

DISCLAIMER I, AllenG (DedicatedTenter), am not in any way in favor of red light cameras. I think any municipality installing them is trying to run a scam on their taxpayers. /DISCLAIMER I don't know the specifics, but here are costs that pop into my head. 1) Planning (what intersections get cameras in what order) 2) Positioning (not just setup, but specifically where they need to be aimed to do their job- not hard, but it can be time consuming) 3) The equipment itself 4) Integration (they don't do any good if they're not tied into the light somehow) 5) Programming (being integrated with the light won't do any good if the camera doesn't know when to take a picture). Then, usually, there is a fee for servicing/support. If the municipality wants the fines (rather than a cut from whatever the camera company collects), that's another fee. And so forth. Do I think 7+ million is reasonable? Actually, yeah. I work IT Consulting, and I know how big some of our *small* projects are. 2+ million for a 9 - 12 month contract is not unheard of. At a previous consulting company, we got a 6 million dollar job for a year commitment. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at January 28, 2015 03:23 PM (M1uf/) 373

there is no magic when the rights are read
thats a requirement on LE if you can prove you were in custody, and not free to go, anything they ask you after that point may not be used against you whether you were Mirandized or not the right to remain silent begins not when you are informed of it but when you are legally detained and are not free to go Posted by: ThunderB, Shapeshifter at January 28, 2015 03:42 PM (zOTsN) 439
"I fully support Police body cams.... as long as EVERYONE knows they are there. "
I love when people tout the studies that show body cameras decrease police violence. Most times it is said that wearing the camera causes the Officer to be nicer. Therefore, fewer complaints. How bout we put big ol honking cameras on every Officer. The kind with the red blinky light that says "We are recording your ass". But....have the cameras be fake. And see if the number of complaints still drop. If so, yeh, people are no longer filing bogus complaints. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 28, 2015 03:43 PM (fL+1V) 440

No, that's not a fair assessment. It's not like she's come out for same-sex marriage Posted by: Kensington Well, it's broader than that. She's become very "inclusion" orientated and pretty aggressively anti-socon over the last couple of years, specifically on the issue of the expansion of gay rights. There was some to do last year, maybe the year before, on the gay story of the day, and she went to 11 in denouncing the right as haters and bigots and such in pretty strong language. To a shocking extent. It was like the cat lady who throws her cats at pedestrians. That was actually the last time I recall anything of her's being linked from the right side. Sven, I agree with you. For the first time (at least that I've ever seen it anyway), some were arguing that the Pro-life movement should start to include the 'Poor' because nothing could be more pro-life than the poor. Huh? So the movement is gonna get highjacked for the Pope's favorite cause. It seems saving souls has taken a backseat to The Poor, who are now the superstars in the Church. Think I saw something yesterday about sharing our property, too. Nothing would surprise me at this point. But the leading voices keep defending, explaining, blaming those of us that are troubled and worried. Tired of all of them. Keep going to Mass and trying to ignore it.

My mom had just turned 90 2 weeks before, she came down with a cold, it turned into pneumonia, she was hospitalized for a few days, sent home for hospice and died with her family around her. She had been living alone in her own home at the time of her death. It was as peaceful an ending as anyone could hope for. My mother and I were as close as could be, always and forever, so it's been a traumatic loss but she had a quick and relatively painless end to a loving, long life and we'll meet again with my father and my large extended in the next life. Thanks you guys! You've gotten me through so many tough times with your humor, your spirituality, even the bickering. The Horde is my family too and y'all are awesome!

Heh. I was but a wee Moron when I discovered that church wasn't for me. I went to Sunday School and church with schoolmates for a few weeks. I read all the passages they gave me, but when it came time to talk about them, I couldn't understand what they were talking about. I did not get the same thing out of them that everyone else did. So, little hellion that I was, I struck out on my own. As I was in the Buckle of the Bible Belt at the time, you can imagine how that went over. I never looked back and don't regret my decision confident that if God was as described, He'd know I was trying to find Him. Now if I could just find out how I managed to piss Him off before I was born...nothing else 'splains all the shit I've been through. We had an awkward run in with our last church.
We had only gone a few times, and didn't know 100% of their doctrine. That ended...badly. See, they gave the autistic son a coloring page that had Noah building his Ark with a dinosaur. Yep, we had stumbled into a young earth church without realizing it. Autistic son was not amused. I was told after class ended that he'd spent the entire hour arguing with the teacher about how the T-Rex in the picture was from the Cretaceous time period and thus could not be present while Noah was building the Ark, and even if he had been there, why didn't he get on the Ark? Ahem. Let's just say that we didn't go back. Posted by: Lauren at January 28, 2015 04:30 PM (MYCIw) 569
JBodine,
Forgive the traction I'm on the Note.... I'm sorry for your loss, parents leaving is hard and I think mothers are the keener cut for most. God gifts us quite literally with mothers, they carry us, spring us forth onto a harsh world, nurture us and brook us towards our destiny.... and b/c of these services they never can really "be gone" but the memory of their being in us and spiritually near us hurts b/c the whispers and feeling of their spirit makes us long for the open embrace His plan requires we await posterity ourselves for. Know she misses you, and whence day may come you stand together she will take pride in you tackling what remained of your mortal coil. I wish I could say it gets easier, instead I can only say the pain gets softer but the joys at what remains still don't Sven Posted by: Sven10077 at January 28, 2015 04:30 PM (N7j+H) 570

I would if our healthcare didn't depend on it. *sigh* That's terrible, I know, but the social pecking order in most churches is just so off putting, and having a child with special needs makes things difficult since most don't know WTF to do with him. I much prefer the "family bible at the table/ rock of ages" model of teaching religion, but hey, maybe this time will be different. Here is a prayer I likeso I pass it on to you; Sorry about your mom but I'm glad that she had a peaceful and relatively painless end; and many folks who loved her Forgive me, I don't know your mom's first name: Eternal God you have shared with those who loved her the life of ______(Jeanne's mom). Before she was theirs. she is yours. For all that she gave to make them who they are and that of her which lives and grows in each of them and for her life that in your love will never end, we give you thanks. They have offered her back into your arms. O gracious God, may their loved one grow in increasing knowledge and love of you, and strength to strength tin service in your heavily kingdom . Comfort those left behind in their loneliness, strengthen, them in their weakness and give them courage to face the future unafraid through Jesus Christ our Lord. "?? Aren't you sposed to go with the one what fits in your theological family tree? "
Yeah, but we're Pentecostal so we're sort of on our own. Worse, we're Oneness Pentecostal so even if we go to the Assembly of God Pentecostal church, we're heretics. At this point my biggest criteria is that there's no rockband leading the worship service and their sunday school isn't teaching anything so outside our beliefs that I'm going to have to constantly correct it since that will just confuse the kids. I suggested the free-will baptist church, but my husband's thoughts on that were "yeah, but they're the worst. It's everything that's wrong with the Pentecostal church without any of the good." Posted by: Lauren at January 28, 2015 04:48 PM (MYCIw) 626
If you haven't already you might try reading up on their websites if they have any, or if they're not independent churches read what the denominational website says. How about Assembly of God-that's a pentecostal church? That would save time before you visit in weeding out the ones that are just so foreign to what you believe

This is a book I recommend for those who feel like God was out to get them. I don't believe he is ,but the best, compassionate discussion of some of these painful and difficult issues is "Why? Making Sense of God's Will by Adam Hamilton. He has a large church in Kansas but he's about as far from the theology of Joel Osteen as you can get.

The Assembly of God is Pentecostal but they're Trinitarian.
Our church basically is a split from the United Pentecostal Church. Almost identical beliefs, except for the standards thing. I'm sort of biased against AoG just because I know they can sometimes tend to be rather...aggressive, which I find off putting. Plus, they are more aware of the oneness/trinitarian split than most other churches would be and have very strong opinions on the matter. I know that's weird since most people think of Pentecostals as loud and crazy, but the church we were married in was the exact opposite of that. It was almost *too* calm. We could go to a UPC church a few towns over, but then we get into the whole standards thing and I just can't get started in that since I disagree with it so much from theological stand point. If we can just find a church that is relatively mainstream theologically I think we'll be ok. Posted by: Lauren at January 28, 2015 05:00 PM (MYCIw) 630
