Andrew Sullivan Will Stop Blogging "In the Near Future"

Um, no one, actually, but I needed a quickie post and look how quick this is. As you can imagine this news from Andrew Sullivan has been greeted with a tasteful level of Seething Hatred. Various whoop-de-doos are linking their favorite dissections of Sullivan.Through the Looking Glass With Andrew Sullivan 23 Jun by Christopher BadeauxGreat stuff. Of course I noted that Andrew Sullivan was a gibbering maniac as well. (Do NOT comment on old threads-- the system will ban you.)
Perhaps the single, common life goal of every intellectual, pseudo-intellectual, and intellectual aspirant, is to be a true Renaissance man -- a genius whose force of will and flexible, dominating intellect allows him to master or nearly master not one or two, but a whole host of related and unrelated fields of study and practice. Sadly, not everyone can be Leonardo da Vinci or Karol Wojtyla. Or Andrew Sullivan. Sullivan, who has worn dozens of hats in his lifetime, is truly unique. He stands astride the worlds of politics, journalism, theology, foreign policy, and applied obstetrics like the Colossus of Rhodes.... Few among us have the raw intellectual firepower to go where he has. Fortunately, the internet tubes allow us to track his movements over time -- an otherwise dizzying effort made more vertiginous by Sullivan’s kaleidoscopic mind. As with all things Sullivan, the best place to start is with human genitalia. To say that Sullivan has focused his laser-like mind on human reproductive organs is to engage in an understatement worthy of the master himself. We could simply look at Sullivan’s relentless, years-long focus on circumcision (a relentlessness not well-captured by the internet tubes, as Sullivan’s archives traditionally become difficult to search when he moves from site to site), an unusual genre for a man who will never have children and who is not Jewish or Muslim, though perhaps not so unusual given his general interest in the member in question--- But to spend too much time on mere ponderings on the presence or absence of foreskin is to do Sullivan an injustice. Anyone can bloviate on that. Few men of letters -- indeed, few doctors -- can diagnose a woman's pregnancy forensically from a handful of news articles and photographs. Few are gifted with the ability to toss out thousands of words as tightly organized as Ulysses at the drop of a hat and still able to offer informed medical opinions on changes to the female body during mid- and late-term pregnancy --opinions at odds with normal understandings of human biology and the preeminent textbooks of the field. But then again, few men are Andrew Sullivan. Depending on the day, Andrew Sullivan might not even be Andrew Sullivan. Dr. Sullivan on Sarah Palin’s Reproductive Abilities [A] select group of internet personalities decided that Mrs. Palin's son Trig must, in fact, be her daughter's, who was then a senior in high school. This being modern American political online writing, proof of this ridiculous assertion was neither offered nor demanded, and a thousand would-be obstetricians immediately began poking at pictures of a teenaged girl to demonstrate, for all the world to see, that those photos showed she was large enough to be pregnant. That these same people would be the first to cry in fury if the child being subjected to this humiliation were not the child of a Republican was, again as usual, lost on the lay doctors caught in their five-minute hate. Andrew Sullivan immediately leaped into the fray. Unlike the rest of these non-experts, many of whom began to back off of the story when word emerged that Mrs. Palin's daughter was pregnant and had been close to the time of Trig's birth, Sullivan, who apparently received a secret medical degree while attending Harvard, began obsessively following this story, turning the Atlantic from a fairly uninteresting opinion website into a leading journal of gynecology and obstetrics. Rarely in human history has a gay man been that obsessed with a married woman's vagina. This became, perhaps even more than the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency, Sullivan’s driving motivation during the 2008 campaign, if the quantity of his writings are any indication of his drive. While others were intimidated by photos of Mrs. Palin in late-stage pregnancy looking like a woman in late-stage pregnancy, the biological impossibility of a seventeen year-old girl giving birth to two non-fraternal children less than eleven months apart, and other indicia of what the rest of us take for ordinary reality, that laser-like mind knew no fear. Without a blow by blow of those two months of Herculean effort, it's impossible to fully capture the way in which the Atlantic rivaled the New England Journal of Medicine in pushing the edge of medical consensus; a sampling will have to suffice.

Actually, I think it was that President Bush was going to act on an issue like candidate Bush had said: gay marriage. You can agree or disagree with Bush's position, but he was remarkably consistent both as a candidate and a president. At that point, Sully went batshit crazy. Even better was during the 2004 election when Sullivan questioned Insty (or someone) for saying that Kerry's position was the same as Bush. Insty linked to Kerry's quote which said something along the lines of "The president's position on this subject are exactly the same", followed by great Insty snark:"This must be some of that fabled nuance I've heard so much about."

There are often things that I disagree with many conservatives about, but that doesn't mean for one goddam minute that I'm going to become a Liberal overnight out of spite.

"Reasonable expectation of privacy" is weasel words to get around the very clear 4th amendment. I don't care that any average joe on the street could see me- any average joe does not have the coercive power of the State. Moreover, I *do* have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" in that, as an anonymous face on the street, I do not expect people to be taking my picture, listening in on my conversations, and generally tracking my movements.

In a decision made Tuesday, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the names of jurors who serve in criminal cases are to be available to the public.
The new ruling means that if you serve on a jury, your name will become public record by the end of the trial at the latest, but the decision that isn’t sitting well with everyone.
Those opposed to the ruling argue it will create harassment and other risks for those jurors.
While those in support of the decision, like Jana Seiler of West Springfield, told 22News that deciding if someone committed a serious crime or not is a big deal, and they want to know who’s behind making that decision.
“I think everybody has a right to know who sat on that jury and made that decision, especially the family of the victim or of the person being accused,” Seiler said.

He was massively anti-Saddam but also not totally pro-war because war is scary and it was about to happen to his city. A lot of his reports clarified things that were (shock!) misreported in the MSM.
It was like having an embed. It was one of the power of the intertubes experiences for me.

To be clear- considering the considerable rules which govern how a school is supposed to treat children (I will not derail this with how a public school treated my child) I do not have any philosophical problem with requiring a student to have an ID badge with some kind of RFID chip on their person while engaged in school functions (that is: while at school, on field trips, etc.).
And I'm the guy who says we don't even treat our children like People, let alone like citizens.
While you are at school, the school is acting en loco parentis, and has a whole lot of rights around how they keep track of your child and how they care for them (including discipline, actually). So having them wear ID which has an RFID chip... not a big deal to me.
But schools too often don't stop there. Like the kids being monitored via webcam on their school-issued laptops. Or some school district which tried to require that kids wear those same IDs outside of school hours. And that is *not* okay.

I smiled when cities started doing away with them.
My problem with red light cameras is completely different and not related to the 4th amendment (since they only go off when you have actually committed a crime- specifically, running a red light). Though it is worrisome (in a 4th amendment sense) when they are triggered by someone buzzing a light (starting through on yellow, and then the light turns red so the camera takes a shot).

I don't get this. It's not like anyone has to praise her for it. She wasn't refusing to do it as some "statement," but just because she's just as self-centered as her husband.

I don't know the specifics, but here are costs that pop into my head.
1) Planning (what intersections get cameras in what order)
2) Positioning (not just setup, but specifically where they need to be aimed to do their job- not hard, but it can be time consuming)
3) The equipment itself
4) Integration (they don't do any good if they're not tied into the light somehow)
5) Programming (being integrated with the light won't do any good if the camera doesn't know when to take a picture).
Then, usually, there is a fee for servicing/support. If the municipality wants the fines (rather than a cut from whatever the camera company collects), that's another fee.
And so forth.
Do I think 7+ million is reasonable? Actually, yeah. I work IT Consulting, and I know how big some of our *small* projects are. 2+ million for a 9 - 12 month contract is not unheard of. At a previous consulting company, we got a 6 million dollar job for a year commitment.

I love when people tout the studies that show body cameras decrease police violence.
Most times it is said that wearing the camera causes the Officer to be nicer. Therefore, fewer complaints.
How bout we put big ol honking cameras on every Officer. The kind with the red blinky light that says "We are recording your ass".
But....have the cameras be fake.
And see if the number of complaints still drop.
If so, yeh, people are no longer filing bogus complaints.

Well, it's broader than that. She's become very "inclusion" orientated and pretty aggressively anti-socon over the last couple of years, specifically on the issue of the expansion of gay rights.
There was some to do last year, maybe the year before, on the gay story of the day, and she went to 11 in denouncing the right as haters and bigots and such in pretty strong language. To a shocking extent. It was like the cat lady who throws her cats at pedestrians.
That was actually the last time I recall anything of her's being linked from the right side.

Yeah..., I was wrong about that. They're only buying 1400 cameras, so that's $5000 per officer. The bodycam that I have looked at was $400.
So..., 1400 x $400 = $560,000, leaving a mere $6,440,000 for SD cards..., which as far as I know, is the only significant, required, 'Infrastructure'.

Not exactly correct. Cameras don't record till officer starts the camera. You are not recording him 24/7. The file can or can not be uploaded to a main server. If it has an internet connection, then it would automatically upload.
I doubt they are paying for a cell number for each camera. If not you are talking about an 128G SD card. If every officer turns one in everyday, that will not come close to $7 mill.

A few years ago, the MA state police started hanging out in the parking lots of fireworks shops just inside NH, looking for customers with MA plates (yes...everything fun is illegal here). The local NH police got pissed about this interference in legal commerce in NH, and started arresting the MA state troopers for loitering. Our state police stopped doing that shit.

I was but a wee Moron when I discovered that church wasn't for me. I went to Sunday School and church with schoolmates for a few weeks. I read all the passages they gave me, but when it came time to talk about them, I couldn't understand what they were talking about. I did not get the same thing out of them that everyone else did.
So, little hellion that I was, I struck out on my own. As I was in the Buckle of the Bible Belt at the time, you can imagine how that went over. I never looked back and don't regret my decision confident that if God was as described, He'd know I was trying to find Him.
Now if I could just find out how I managed to piss Him off before I was born...nothing else 'splains all the shit I've been through.

See, they gave the autistic son a coloring page that had Noah building his Ark with a dinosaur. Yep, we had stumbled into a young earth church without realizing it.
Autistic son was not amused. I was told after class ended that he'd spent the entire hour arguing with the teacher about how the T-Rex in the picture was from the Cretaceous time period and thus could not be present while Noah was building the Ark, and even if he had been there, why didn't he get on the Ark?

I'm sorry for your loss, parents leaving is hard and I think mothers are the keener cut for most.
God gifts us quite literally with mothers, they carry us, spring us forth onto a harsh world, nurture us and brook us towards our destiny....
and b/c of these services they never can really "be gone" but the memory of their being in us and spiritually near us hurts b/c the whispers and feeling of their spirit makes us long for the open embrace His plan requires we await posterity ourselves for.

I wish I could say it gets easier, instead I can only say the pain gets softer but the joys at what remains still don't

I would if our healthcare didn't depend on it. *sigh* That's terrible, I know, but the social pecking order in most churches is just so off putting, and having a child with special needs makes things difficult since most don't know WTF to do with him. I much prefer the "family bible at the table/ rock of ages" model of teaching religion, but hey, maybe this time will be different.

Yeah, but we're Pentecostal so we're sort of on our own. Worse, we're Oneness Pentecostal so even if we go to the Assembly of God Pentecostal church, we're heretics.
At this point my biggest criteria is that there's no rockband leading the worship service and their sunday school isn't teaching anything so outside our beliefs that I'm going to have to constantly correct it since that will just confuse the kids.
I suggested the free-will baptist church, but my husband's thoughts on that were "yeah, but they're the worst. It's everything that's wrong with the Pentecostal church without any of the good."

Our church basically is a split from the United Pentecostal Church. Almost identical beliefs, except for the standards thing.
I'm sort of biased against AoG just because I know they can sometimes tend to be rather...aggressive, which I find off putting. Plus, they are more aware of the oneness/trinitarian split than most other churches would be and have very strong opinions on the matter.
I know that's weird since most people think of Pentecostals as loud and crazy, but the church we were married in was the exact opposite of that. It was almost *too* calm.
We could go to a UPC church a few towns over, but then we get into the whole standards thing and I just can't get started in that since I disagree with it so much from theological stand point.
If we can just find a church that is relatively mainstream theologically I think we'll be ok.
