El Assassin@sven10077 at January 27, 2015 10:34 AM (/4AZU) The most infuriating things about Pope Francis, as a Catholic, is that if you take the time to read the highlights of his daily homilies, he's really, really great **when talking about faith.** He's also really up front when it comes to talking about the devil and his influence in the world, the need for repentance, etc. It's when he does the public circuit and tried to delve into politics that he just goes off the rails entirely. He's obviously not well-read or educated enough in areas outside of faith, yet he feels it necessary to give us his Peronist propaganda at every opportunity. It's so frustrating. Good ol' Weather Channel.
Here in OH, called for 1-2 inches, we got 5-6 inches. Car made in it exactly 10ft outside the garage before getting stuck. Effin' Hyundai's are CRAP in teh snow. Back east, TWC calls for 1-3 ft of snow, most areas get half of that. Maybe if they just reported the weather and showed the satellites, and quit hyping (and naming) every single cloud they would have a better track record. And don't EVEN get me started on their climate change cheerleading. Sometimes people just need a good strong drink of STFU. /rant Posted by: 1bulwetweft at January 27, 2015 10:49 AM (Fr8iN) 82

Yes, but it really shouldn't be the case. It's only really a threat because most folks now have no real understanding of what the Pope's authority actually is. He's competent and authoritative in issues of faith and morals only, and even then he can only define something absolutely under certain extremely specific circumstances. The vast majority of what he says on faith and morals may be helpful to read, but isn't binding on anyone. Nothing he has said thus far is, in fact, binding on anything. But so many people- Catholics included- think that every single one of his utterances carry authoritative weight for Catholics that it can be dangerous. Which is why I loved Benedict so much. He was super careful in everything he said. Posted by: Mandy P., lurking lurker who lurks at January 27, 2015 10:53 AM (KkVB6) 94

While a court martial could lead to imprisonment, defense and military officials tell NBC News it is likely Bergdahl would be given consideration for the 5 years he spent in captivity and be permitted to leave the Army with a "less than honorable discharge." If accepted, Bergdahl would be denied as much as $300 thousand in back pay and bonuses, and reduced in rank to at least Private First Class, the rank he held when he disappeared from his outpost in Afghanistan
that my friends is non-judicial punishment via an Article 5 punishment, and a quick administrative discharge there will be no trial. he will be undercharged. it will all be administrative. it will be quick in two years he will apply to have his discharge upgraded to fully honorable via the Discharge Review Board. So anyways, at the public health surveillance meeting this food services guy pipes up about how he's doing surveys of previously not looked at stuff on food trucks and thinks we need to regulate water supplies on the trucks. Asking about particulars, he says that the owners sometimes re-use 1 gallon jugs and leave em out during the day and he thinks they oughta be forced to either buy all new or wash em out.
And yes, that will probly be done. I did try to make the point that sunlight is often used in the Third World as a disinfectant for water and the opaque nature of a typical jug might slow the process but really we're just talking surface bact-- and I had to leave it there.... He only does that when someone else cuts and pastes the relevant passage from the book for him. Even Barack Obama can stuff a quote from the Declaration of Independence or Washington's First Inaugural Address into a speech. It doesn't mean that deep down he's really a true-blue American patriot. All it means is that he knows enough to toss a little dust around to make it difficult for his enemies to make their case against him. Joke Francis is the same. All the stale, dried-out 1960's radical leftovers are what he thinks and what he is. The good stuff could be done by an automated daily Bible quote program. I got into watching Agents of SHIELD and enjoyed it...until they started in with all the relationshippy shit that apparently women want in their shows. Whatever. But aren't all these things supposed to tie together? I mean, OK so if SHIELD is pretty much gone and in want of resources, why not call Charles Xavier or the F4 for some help? Tony Start got some mention in the show...he's too busy to help out? And why keep Coulson a secret now...he's pretty much in charge, so why keep him hush hush? OK. He is in a legal fight with the NY Fire Commissioner, and may lose his job over it. Whatever. But what's bizarre and funny comes at the end of the article, where the fireman's lawyer (arguing, essentially, for the white race) is named Adam Weiss...and the Fire Commissioner who has been trying to push affirmative action (and who is argung, essentially, for the black race) is named...wait for it...Daniel Nigro. A lot of this has to do with IP, but I think within the properties that Marvel itself has kept, I think they've actually done a very, VERY good job. Marvel doesn't get to do movies/TV about the FF or X-Men. They're not allowed to use the word "mutant" in relation to superheroes. So Charles Xavier is right out. Tony Stark does not know that Agent (now Director) Colson is alive, so he can't exactly be asked for a loan. In addition, everyone believes that SHIELD is a group of traitors, which further limits their ability to ask for resources. As for why Colson is keeping his existence secret, IDK. I haven't watched this season because I forgot to record the first several episodes. Now I'll have to wait for Netflix. If I had to guess, it's because he's still freaked out and also because he's not sure what it means for Skye. Yeah. Snow Big Deal. As for Marvel, keep in mind they have three different studios with chunks of their IP and as a result can't bring it all together--Fox has X-Men/Fantastic Four, Sony has Spider-Man (but...), and the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" properties (Avengers etc.) are all in-house. So SHIELD has to make do with what they have, which has the virtue of keeping production budgets manageable. Posted by: Brother Cavil, Unrepresented at January 27, 2015 11:13 AM (DT3rQ) 183

If Hogan's Heroes is any indication, then Bergdahl is a hero. Agents of Shield is decent, but a little light on super heroes for a comic book-based show.
It's about the JV super heroes. Every episode I have seen has had some sort of superhuman. But without being able to use "Mutants" (which is the mainstay of Marvel), it makes it harder to have explicit supers. But Deathlock is a real Marvel character. So is "Scorch" (from one episode of season 1). And it looks like they're getting ready to set up the Kree, which brings in a whole lot of superhero type choices (because now they can explain it as "alien DNA"). I realize it's funny to make fun of the Northeasterners but we (as a group) are not the weather channel. We didn't hype the storm nor are we making the decisions about what gets shut down, A lot of us didn't panic either. Yes, it was not a big dud for NJ and NY, but as our kindly commentator irongranpa pointed out, one tends only to worry if a storm stalls which this was predicted as doing. Parts of MA have two feet snow and high winds now which could be a bit worisomel if you're not used to that much at one time,, and I might gently remind people that some of our dear commentators such as Carol come from that area. As many of you know, It is no fun to be stuck inside in the winter if your power goes out for any length of time and you don't have a generator or fireplace, and of course some of the people might be elderly folks who live alone. So yes, praying people can say a prayer if they care to for people at risk and know that yes some of us have and do say prayers for you when you face difficulties.

If this were an MCU movie I'd trust them to handle that reasonably well. I haven't read Batman in a long time, but the story arc of just about every Batman story ever is this: 1) Batman realizes Something Bad is happening 2) Batman tries to stop the Something Bad 2a) Batman gets his ass kicked. 3) Batman, now knowing WHO is doing something bad * Does Research into said person to learn weaknesses * Does Research into Bad Thing to see how to stop it * Completes gadget he just *happened* to be developing for "a situation just like this." * All of the above 4) Batman tries to stop the Something Bad again. 4a) Batman kicks the bad guy's ass. Which is not actually a bad story arc, and fits into how Bats is supposed to be- the ultimate Human hero. Oh. And if the "Who" (step 3) was Shiva or Deathstroke, 3a) became about surviving the fight long enough to stop the bad thing and 4a) becomes "Batman gets his ass kicked *again* but stops the Bad Thing and Shiva or Deathstroke leaves." Remember when Billy Clinton sent at least four from his National team to consult with Tony Blair's campaign during the UK 1996-1997 election? Yep, it worked and Blair (Labour) replaced Major (Conservative) as Pm.
Barky hasn't met a single ally that he doesn't want to turn against the United States. Remember Honduras? Socialist President illegally tried to set up run for third term directly against constitution. Supreme court orders military to arrest and deport him. Obama calls it a coup. Hillary calls it a coup. Barry puts pressure on and sells the ally out. Later, wkileaks diplomatic cables show the whole thing was done as a "favor" for Hugo Chavez. Barry turned on a democracy in our own backyard that was an ally to mollify a Socialist dictatorship that was an enemy "as a favor". But impeachment is off the table. But snow fall is often a local thing. Close to the coast, during a nor'easter you might get two feet, further north Boston is getting it good. Couple miles inland, you get two inches. The unfailing formula for production of morale is patriotism, self-respect, discipline, and self confidence within a military unit, joined with fair treatment and merited appreciation from without... It will quickly wither and die if the soldiers come to believe themselves the victims of indifference or injustice on the part of their government, or of ignorance, personal ambition, or ineptitude on the part of their military leaders. - General Douglas MacArthur

I used to refrain from social media as well, but FB is a good way to keep in touch with family. And I wouldn't have all these middle aged women chasing me if I wasn't on there.
Posted by: Sphynx at January 27, 2015 12:04 PM (OZmbA) Heh. At least I'm not the only one. A friend of mine once replied to a post I made: "Dude, do you know how many hot women you have on your friends list?" Yes, I'm aware. But I'm still Captain Friendzone. They are more into high end fashion and cars. I'm not a shopper but these people have taken it to an art form. People, rich people, come from all over the world just to shop there. Kind of bizarre. Posted by: JackStraw at January 27, 2015 12:20 PM (g1DWB) 386

Ok I was wrong
there are cases since 2009 charged under sub 2 as commenters have noted although traditionally Desertion was always understood to be with the intent to stay away permanently Posted by: ThunderB, Professional Ball Deflator at January 27, 2015 12:22 PM (zOTsN) 389
Snow still coming down at a good clip here north of Boston with lots of wind blowing -- at least the snow is light and puffy. I am amazed localities around me are already cancelling school for tomorrow (and at least one, Malden, cancelling for THURSDAY, too). When I was of that age, this would have been unheard of.
Gotta go shovel soon -- hope the Boston Yeti doesn't eat me! Posted by: acethepug at January 27, 2015 12:25 PM (8wVdZ) 390

I wish. January is Shopping Festival month in Dubai which again is kind of strange seeing as all they do is shop all the time. There are ads everywhere for gold lotteries that you enter when you buy certain stuff. My only purchases were beer and duty free cigarettes. No gold. Memo to Pope Francis:
When it was said that the Lord would come like "a thief in the night", it was allegory. NOT AN ACTION PLAN. S'all good though- those Texans who defend their homesteads? Protestant, almost to a fault. It'll work itself out spectacularly, prophecy of St. Malachy be damned. Posted by: Fringe at January 27, 2015 12:29 PM (oWl4T) 392

Desertion requires the intent not to return there is no or between 1) and 2) AWOL has no intent requirement Posted by: ThunderB, Professional Ball Deflator at January 27, 2015 12:10 PM (zOTsN) Nope.... Desertion becomes an automatic when in the Face of the enemy... which falls under #2. He was deployed... he was on station facing the enemy. 1 is one possible way to get to a desertion charge... 2. is separate... ie in the face of the enemy... 3. is again separate... I'd hope that Pope Francis would "come over the border" between the US and Mexico by using an official border crossing. A criminal stunt of border jumping would be extremely bad.
A legal crossing at an official location would be better, but still bad: 1. A motorcade through TJ or Juarez or something would be a mess. 2. Gumming up the border crossing checkpoint is a bad idea. 3. Pope would still have a long way to go after crossing at that point, unless he was just going to El Paso. It would just be a stunt to put a thumb in the eye of those of us who believe in the responsibility of national governments to prioritize poor citizens over poor foreigners. My bet is that he never crosses the USA-Mexico border by land. He'll be smart and just fly. Posted by: zerk at January 27, 2015 12:57 PM (dFBkj) 395
