Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The New York Times, February, 2014: "The End of Snow?"The New York Times wrote about the snow-less future less than one year ago. As the New York media freaks out over some Weather That Matters (in as much as it affects them), enjoy this panicky nonsense from last year.OVER the next two weeks, hundreds of millions of people will watch Americans like Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin ski for gold on the downhill alpine course. Television crews will pan across epic vistas of the rugged Caucasus Mountains, draped with brilliant white ski slopes. What viewers might not see is the 16 million cubic feet of snow that was stored under insulated blankets last year to make sure those slopes remained white, or the hundreds of snow-making guns that have been running around the clock to keep them that way. Officials canceled two Olympic test events last February in Sochi after several days of temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and a lack of snowfall had left ski trails bare and brown in spots. That situation led the climatologist Daniel Scott, a professor of global change and tourism at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, to analyze potential venues for future Winter Games. His thought was that with a rise in the average global temperature of more than 7 degrees Fahrenheit possible by 2100, there might not be that many snowy regions left in which to hold the Games. He concluded that of the 19 cities that have hosted the Winter Olympics, as few as 10 might be cold enough by midcentury to host them again. By 2100, that number shrinks to 6. The planet has warmed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1800s, and as a result, snow is melting. In the last 47 years, a million square miles of spring snow cover has disappeared from the Northern Hemisphere. Europe has lost half of its Alpine glacial ice since the 1850s, and if climate change is not reined in, two-thirds of European ski resorts will be likely to close by 2100. The same could happen in the United States, where in the Northeast, more than half of the 103 ski resorts may no longer be viable in 30 years because of warmer winters.... The facts are straightforward: The planet is getting hotter. Snow melts above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The Alps are warming two to three times faster than the worldwide average, possibly because of global circulation patterns. Since 1970, the rate of winter warming per decade in the United States has been triple the rate of the previous 75 years, with the strongest trends in the Northern regions of the country. Nine of the 10 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000, and this winter is already looking to be one of the driest on record -- with California at just 12 percent of its average snowpack in January, and the Pacific Northwest at around 50 percent.Meanwhile, at Slate, their Weather Spastic is busy churning out these shrieky blurbs:
NWS in Boston is still stressing that this blizzard could permanently alter the geography of the Massachusetts coastline: "This is a storm that could produce one or more new inlets along exposed east and northeast facing barrier beaches. We are especially concerned with the erosion potential for east facing shorelines along Plum Island, Orleans, Chatham and Nantucket."Um, yes, storm water may erode barrier beaches, and may make some inlets through these sandbars. Or, as the Weather Spastic put it: "Permanently alter the coast of New England." See, either there's not going to be any snow and we should Spaz Out About It, or we're getting some snow and it may Destroy the Earth's Mantle. Either way, you must pay attention to the shriekey, squealey Weather Spastics. Either way you will pay them the honor of pretending they're important. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

7 degrees by 2100?
Here's the methodology on that one, folks: 1) Look at the temperature rise (steep) from 1979 to 1998. 2) how much did atmospheric CO2 increase during those years? 3) OK, now assume CO2 drove that temperature rise. Extrapolate linearly based on best guess CO2 increase. 4) Presto! Of course the models are much, much more complicated than that, but that's what it amounts to. They wrote them to account for a remarkably steep temperature rise and assumed CO2 was the major driver. Nothing else they considered could explain the rise (they were not sorry to rule out other causes), so they were left with CO2 plus water vapor feedback. And now they're starting to realize they might have overstated the role of CO2 - a position held only by those evil oil-funded denialists, just a few short years ago. After 45 years, I left Bangor, Maine in February, 2000. There was 6 ft on the ground, and another 2 on the way. I had snowshoes in my pickup for a reason. New England storms are called nor'easters, folks. Anything less than 4 inches are called "flurries".

Some of these hyperventilating "reporters" should spend a winter in places like Tahoe where a 20" snowstorm is called Tuesday, followed by Wednesday with another 15".
But 5" falls in Manhattan and it's run for your lives everyone. I was in Baltimore in 2005 (maybe 2006). They got 2" of snow overnight. The morning local TV was nothing but "SNOW EMERGENCY" shit with school closures, traffic reports, etc. I'm thinking WTF, this is Baltimore, not Miami. It was unreal. I lived my best years there and hope to return. In Scituate, my town, the mouth of the North River moved five miles in one day in the Portland Gale of 1898. All over the Northeast, classic power plants with decades of reliable service left in them are being decommissioned early, to be replaced by "clean, green, renewable" power from windmills and solar panels. Sock off.
Anyways, a report on DEATH STORM 2015 from my area (SE PA). The snow started during the night, and this morning there was about an inch on the ground. I left for work a little early in case there was traffic, but the drive was perfectly normal. For much of the day it snowed, but it was little more than flurries and there was almost no accumulation. Yet many local businesses closed early for some reason. When I left to go home at the normal time, the roads were almost deserted, yet they were completely clear. It's supposed to get heavier tonight, and I've variously heard predictions of 4-8" or 6'12". So tomorrow morning could be more problematic. I gassed up the snow blower and started it up a few times before I closed the garage, so I'm as ready as I can be. I have plenty of booze and cigarettes on hand, too. It also alleges that another high-profile member, John Travolta, won't leave the church out of fear that his personal life will be exposed. Reams of information are kept on each member as they go through the process of "auditing" in order to become "clear" of all problems, worries and bad memories. Spanky Taylor, a former publicist and friend of Travolta, details how her infant daughter was taken away from her and left in a urine-soaked crib and unsanitary, fly-infested conditions. Meanwhile, Taylor was forced to do arduous physical labor while she was pregnant. Fed up, Taylor took her child and escaped from the church. She attended the premiere with her daughter Vanessa, now grown, whom Gibney called "the stolen baby." Posted by: artisanal 'ette at January 26, 2015 07:24 PM (IXrOn) 336

Used to see them all the time when I was out at lunch. They'd hand cards to nearby passers-by. The cards offered a free personality test (the perpetual Scientology offering to get people hooked). But whereas everyone else who hands stuff out at least gives you an idea of what they're offering ("New restaurant?" or "Free film!"), these cowards wouldn't even bother to tell you what was being offered. They'd just shove their cards under your nose and expect you to take one (because people like free stuff after all). If people had known who or what was being offered, they might have declined.
