I hate to keep riding my hobby horse, but-

this is where cheap energy comes in.

A lot of manufacturing moved away because it's so expensive to manufacture here in the US.

The current elites, both DNC and GOP, solution is to lower American wages to the level of the rest of the world via massive illegal immigration-

so they can raise and destabilize traditional cheap energy and nukes to ride their little unscientific green hobby horse.

But-

if we want good jobs to return to this country and leave a better future for our children, the next President needs to-

drill, baby, drill
build nukes
cut regulation to the bone
lower taxes, fees, etc
cut the size of the Federal gov't(5%/yr until the budget is balanced works for me)
return non-constitutional gov't functions to the states

and watch the jobs and employment skyrocket with-

great wages for the middle class.

126 I would say we are looking east, at 5:45 am.

Since it is a full moon near the horizon we are looking either eastward or westward. The main light is backlighting the clouds suggesting there is no direct sunlight from behind us, therefore likely just before sun-up. The location of the painting is in Japan, where prevailing winds are from the N-NE, so the lean of the mature trees suggests north is to our left. Without knowing the time of year I cannot say whether this is more straight east or more east by southeast. I'll say 5:45 because that seems like a reasonable pre-sunup time.

It seems like every time I turn on the TeeVee there is some commercial or PSA telling people to "follow their dreams", to "make their dreams come true", to "live your dreams" etc, etc. Well here's the deal snowflakes. What's really needed is more people willing to roll up their sleeves and do a job. When I hear a gifted athlete or mediocre Hollywood "talent" tell a bunch of average kids that if they just believe in themselves hard enough they can make their dreams come true it grates on me. Why don't they get one of the millions of regular schmoes who had a dream but had the self analytic capability to recognize their own reality to make one of these ads?

There's a word for making your dream come true, what is it, right on the tip of my tongue...oh yeah...it's called a frigging accomplishment. And it doesn't happen from dreaming. It happens from shutting up and doing.

-- Henry Barbour, son of Haley Barbour, the family who got the senile Thad Cochran re-elected in MS by crudely smearing the Tea Party challenger as a racist Klansman, and paying blacks "walkin' round money" to vote illegally for Cochran

That, and your job is not necessarily your identity. But without religion, kids use their job or activism to fill that void - and a lot of times, it's not pretty.

Whatever happened to showing people actually doing something to make their lives (or someone else's lives) better?

__________--

2 reasons

1. They hate the Patriots and will find any reason to shit on them. Had this been any other team, it would be a non-story. Hell, the Saints paying players to hurt opponent players got 1/10 the coverage. Ray Rice didn't get this much coverage. It's fucking deflated balls for crying out loud, nobody got hurt.

2. This is the geeks/nerds getting revenge on the cool QB. Sports reporters are people who didn't play any sports but wished they could. They were the towel boys.

As Kevin Williamson points out, if you count the unfunded but very real liabilities which are conveniently not reckoned as part of the (itself huge) official national debt, the federal public sector of the USA owes more money than the entire pool of private capital available on the entire planet.

That's not counting the other lower level public sector debt in America, and not counting substantial corporate indebtedness, and not counting considerable individual indebtedness.

This country is in hock up to its neck. We're not "rich". We're temporarily pretending to be rich on borrowed money while living it up. It won't last. Stein's Law.

Fortunately, all of the Navy's surface combatants will be on the bottom of the South China Sea before it's time to reload.

The Navy decided years ago that the whole idea of reloading VLS missile cells at sea via underway replenishment was just *so* old-fashioned, and that things like the cranes to do so could be deleted from the ships, and that all reloading would henceforth be done pierside in port.

Not going to work too well when every friendly port on the Pacific Rim is a blazing wreck after being hit by successive waves of Chicom ballistic missiles.

352 Yes, I understand it's cheating but considering it had little impact on the outcome you'd think they'd have dropped the story already.

Yes, I understand it's cheating *to get into the Championship game*.

Even were it something more along the lines of... "too much competitiveness" (which it isn't), that would be a big freaking deal- especially in the Sports world.

But this is cheating on basically every play of the game. If, for instance, they cheated in the Ravens game (within "the margin of cheating") then they materially harmed every Ravens player and coach- who get bonuses based on how many post-seasons games they play.

Unlike the Saints targeting scandal (which, btw, got Sean Payton suspended for most of a season, and basically destroyed the Saints for a year or more), this effects the integrity of the game itself. The targeting issue was unethical, but it wasn't actively against the rules (if only by the loophole of not having specific "targets" but general ones which just happened to map to specific ones).

As for Ray Rice- we're still talking about that *today.* I still get scolded by NFL players and their wives that it's my fault Ray Rice hit is girl friend (or fiance, or wife, or whoever she is).

So, yes, it you actively like NFL football (and some of us still do), and if the integrity of the sport is important to you (and it is to some of us), "Deflate-gate" is a pretty big deal.

359 The most salient point in Ballgate

came from Troy Aikman, who said, basically after talking about the thing from the perspective of a quarterback-

"Oh yeah, Tom Brady knew the condition of the footballs. If they were uninflected. Any quarterbacks gong to make sure the condition of the ball is what he likes."

so, if the Pats cheated it was at Brady's behest or doing.

Cheating is cheating regardless of outcome.

If the NFL wants the game to have integrity and be respected and not considered something like Mexican Wrestling-

they should suspend Brady from playing in the Superbowl and fine him heavily.

Won't happen.

CIA complied, Democrats said, "okay", and then later on the same Democrats denied having been briefed at all, and accused the CIA of overt criminal conduct.

368 Ball boys are expendable, and when the Patriots blame one -- as Southern Cal did when the Trojans were caught doing the same thing in 2012 -- take it with an industrial-sized dose of salt.

Would a ball boy deflate balls illegally after they were approved by the referees without asking Belichick or Brady for permission?

Well, Brady apparently likes his footballs on the soft side, particularly in rainy conditions like those from Sunday's AFC title game 45-7 victory over the Colts. So if the reports are correct, and if the NFL found 11 of the 12 Patriots' footballs were under-inflated, the only thing Belichick would be mad about -- at least at first -- is how the kid got that 12th ball wrong.

Posted by: Y. A. Tittle at January 23, 2015 11:56 AM (e8kgV)

369 LOL. Yeah they won 45-7 because the ball was 1 lb under inflated. OK. Sure. Why not?

So we should only DQ cheaters if their cheating is definitively what lets them win?

I mean, I don't guess I should be surprised at that attitude, considering the source, but I grew up with "cheaters (should) never prosper" and the idea that cheating of ANY degree should disqualify you from winning.

But I guess that's just my TrueCon moral absolutism talking.

In historic terms, we are in uncharted territory.

Every time jobs were exported in the Past, the parent country was exporting those jobs to colonies.... ie maintaining legal and political control.

Once that political control ended, as with the French, British, Spanish, and Portuguese Empires, their economies went in the dumps...

We've tried something new! We've exported jobs to countries who are our actual Rivals, like China.

And the results? Our economy has essentially flatlined. OUR wages have been stagnant. We have the least % of people working in a generation... and more Government Debt than our entire yearly GDP.

The idea of free trade is a good one... but just like any good idea, when taken to an extreme, it becomes a problem....

At the same time I've noticed the average wage for the working person hasn't gone up very much in the last couple of decades.

One more thing. An country needs jobs of every skill level or there will be people unable to find jobs. Not everyone can go to school and be a chemist or engineer. And without manufacturing there will be less demand for engineers and chemists.

I'd guarantee they're making minimum wage - the inflated CA version, with local add-ons in some cities. It's all we can do to keep Suckramento from giving illegals the vote, much less exempt them from labor enforcement. If you're running a roofing company, you can pay day labor under the table, but if you're making tech, you're paying above-board wages.

This is not a minor issue. And it won't go away just because people insist it is a minor issue. The AFC Championship team is known (or: highly plausibly suspected) of cheating. That throws the whole NFL Championship into confusion.

There is a difference between being "a manufacturing economy" and "having a strong manufacturing sector." I do not think that, as things currently stand, the US could or should move to being "a manufacturing economy" (that is: one where our primary economic activity is manufacturing of goods). However, we have so destroyed our manufacturing sector that we are in great peril in a variety of circumstances.

And that can be addressed fairly easily, actually, if the Gov't would only do so. Reduce manufacturing regulations and reporting requirement to something sane, reign in the EPA and OSHA so they're not de facto running manufacturing companies. Etc. No 'subsidy' or 'protectionism' needed.

438 NAFTA has really helped Mexico. Did you realize they still tariff out exports to them? It is like we need a handicap because we are too good at what we do. Or there is a nasty plan being put to work.

Part of that nasty plan was farming out our manufacturing to enemies that think nothing of subsidizing their manufacturing sector, thereby illegally undercutting our prices.

This entire "global economy" is bullshit and should be discarded as just another failed idea. What it really does is make us vulnerable to a worldwide economic assault much like the '08 Crash. We'd be so much better off if we told the rest of the world to go screw themselves.

459 Re manufacturing - deregulation is the right way to accomplish what can be permissibly accomplished without social engineering. Agree with Allen on that. I'm hesitant to hand out tax preferences and other lollipops to businesses on a "national security" basis or otherwise (like McCain seeks with the Jones Act and shipping, for instance). Homeland already hands out too much dough to cronies for "national security," much less the never-to-be-reformed fraud-o-rama that is defense contracting. I've argued against :"free trade" with countries that have huge labor cost advantages unless and until we first get our own government off the backs of our own labor force and allow our own businesses an opportunity to become more competitive again. Unless we first deregulate American labor, free trade does produce a giant sucking sound.

460 Did Obama announce the end to the War on Poverty in the SOTU ?

"When what you're doing doesn't work for fifty years, it's time to try something new."

"In the 50 years since [LBJ's 1964 State of the Union speech which announced the "war on poverty"], U.S. taxpayers have spent over $22 trillion on anti-poverty programs. Adjusted for inflation, this spending (which does not include Social Security or Medicare) is three times the cost of all U.S. military wars since the American Revolution. Yet progress against poverty, as measured by the U.S. Census Bureau, has been minimal, and in terms of President Johnson's main goal of reducing the 'causes' rather than the mere 'consequences' of poverty, the War on Poverty has failed completely."

This drives me insane.

Yes, character in football counts. The fact there are so many without good character is a failure, and should not simply be accepted as "the way it is."

I'm still ticked that Convicted Felon Michael Vick is allowed to play. Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, and Ben Rothlisberger are all looked up to by lots of kids. It's a damn shame that the NFL has forgotten that part of what it is- whether it likes it or not- is an example for boys- a dream they can have. When it lionizes or ignores cheating, it teaches the lesson that cheating is okay. When it lionizes people who are (or should be) convicted felons, it teaches the lesson that those things don't matter- and all that matters is how fast you can run, or how well you can catch a ball.

And, sure, you try to teach your kid that those people suck, and *no* you shouldn't try to be like them. But you don't get to pick your kid's heroes. Your kid does.

525 Look at this letter posted by someone I know - in LA, far left liberal... (he's Jewish, which I know is not a big deal, but another Jewish family who is very left who has always followed the leftist doctrine). Obama broke him.

Obama: Kobe or LeBron?

When then-Senator Barack Obama joyously stepped off the podium at the 2004 Democratic National convention, after having delivered an outstanding speech, he told his aides, "I'm LeBron, baby!"

Respectfully, Mr. President, you aren't LeBron.

You're Kobe.

Like Kobe, you have two years left on your contract.

And like Kobe, many of your former fans wish you would depart sooner than that.

LeBron is lovable. He makes his teammates better.

At this point, Kobe appears to be all about Kobe.

I campaigned for you online in Ohio in 2008.

I brought my young children to my polling place so they could watch me cast a historic vote for you.

And since then?

You inherited a tanking economy and "fixed" it by transferring $700 billion in TARP money - our money - to your supporters on Wall Street and to the retirement funds of government worker unions.

You claim credit for a renewed economy, but you've actually presided over a jobless recovery where the living standards of the average American have declined.

You reneged on your commitment to attack Syria if it used chemical weapons.

Your cowardice empowered our enemies, from Putin to ISIS, which by your own admission you radically underestimated.

You have taken a hugely undemocratic step toward socialized medicine, against the will of much of the American people.

It's said that you read many books on socialism while you were at Columbia.

How many did you read all the way to the end?

You blame Congress and the Republicans for obstructionist behavior, and yet your own prickly, antisocial nature alienates both friend and foe.

You have lived the American dream, amassing wealth and influence, but you continue to foment class warfare with your incessant attacks on your fellow affluent citizens.

You know that you have no chance of passing higher taxes on the wealthy, but you made the issue a centerpiece of your State of the Union address.

Even your most ardent supporters are deeply disappointed with your lack of engagement with civil rights.

Your failure of leadership regarding Ferguson is inexcusable.

Now gas prices are down, strengthening the economy, but you can't take credit for that.

In your own words, you didn't build it.

Yes, you've won elections, just as Kobe has won rings.

But how proud can you truly be of your six years in office?

You were fortunate to have run against two of the weakest Republican campaigns in memory.

We deserve better.

Perhaps we'll get it after you go.

Turns out you were always Kobe.

Never LeBron.

Our loss.

holy moly, my jaw dropped
but... he still slams republicans
so, we know who he will be voting for
he doesn't seem to connect the dots - only blames TFG

every single email or post I read of this guy was so pro-obama this floors me, the turnabout. He's not a political figure, nor has any influence in that area, so this is from the heart.

536 "466 I have been competing with H1-B engineers for years. I don't like it, but that's the way economics work.

Posted by: JohnnyBoy"

Dude, you may not understand this very well, allow me to educate you.

This is not competition. Companies in other countries do not face the enormous amount of regulation, taxation and fees that they do in the US. There are many reasons, but this is one of the biggest reasons that they can supply workers to US companies at significantly lower costs than local ones to. That is to say, our country is pushing strangling levels of overhead on our businesses leaving them almost no choice to move work and dollars overseas and leaving you with no job. And if you do have a job, this means your salary is much lower than it would be if our businesses were competing fairly with others.

On top of that, H1B visas are vastly oversold. Our businesses lobby (that is bribe) our government to allow into our country, people who accept jobs at far lower wages than people here accept. Again, lowering the salaries of the people here who do get jobs. We should be importing workers to our country when there is a lack of talent or bodies to do the work that we need done. Not importing people just to lower wages.

Do you seriously think that businesses here would be pushing legislators to pass all these visas if it didn't lower their cost of doing business? That is absurd.

No one can fully understand how much this costs us. I am guessing but I think it't fair to say my salary is half of what it would be (software engineer) if this practice had not been going on.

Add that up and get back to me on all this 'fair competition' nonsense.

They are robbing you blind (the government and the corrupt business leaders, not the Indians).

604 I think a pure free market would allow companies to hire as many foreign workers as they want. Competition is good and fine until you're going after MY job!

That's all nice and fine until you're talking about giving subsidies and advantages that skew the field towards the foreign workers.

See that's the thing here--reining in H1b isn't about advantaging US workers, it's about no longer imposing competative disadvantage.

605 I think a pure free market would allow companies to hire as many foreign workers as they want. Competition is good and fine until you're going after MY job!

And a government that wanted to do the best thing for its people would make sure that our laws were not getting in the way of creating wealth. Then after everyone who wants a job has one, businesses could hire foreign employees.

The fact that neither of these things is happening tells you everything you need to know about how much control we've lost.
