Good news, everyone! GOP to "evolve" on Global Warming -- err -- Climate Change. Joining in on the regulation game and picking winners and losers:

Now in control of Congress, some Republicans are beginning to think that simply throwing bombs at the Environmental Protection Agency and Obama's regulations won't work any longer, staffers on Capitol Hill say.

Instead, they believe they must develop their own ideas on how to combat climate change, especially to help moderate GOP senators up for re-election in 2016.

The protests, which left five people dead and 128 people injured, also saw a Christian school and orphanage set alight..."

115 I like open threads. I can post anything that's on my mind and not feel guilty about it.

So this Seth Rogen thing has gotten out of hand. Many people on the right are guilty of exhibiting the same fake outrage that we often accuse liberals of.

To be fair, many people made the same observation that he did. It's a good thing to have a little self-awareness when it comes to war. We often like to think that we are "good" and everything we do is good, and the enemy is "bad" and everything they do is bad. But they are thinking the same thing on the other side as well. There is nothing wrong with recognizing this, and that is all that Rogen did.

For the record, the movie was great. Go see it.

"We have to DO SOMETHING!!!!"

No, you f*cking don't. There is zero evidence that man is in any way responsible for, or can even effect if we want to, the changing climate. To continue to allow this idiocy free reign is to further hobble the economy.

Posted by: MikeH at January 20, 2015 10:31 AM (ZdA3v)

Still no, but closer.

Killing is certainly a part (perhaps the largest "practical" part) of war, but war is not "legalized killing."

War is the exertion of Force in the service of a nation's interests. Not one person has to die for there to be "war" (one side could surrender first). And to reduce the violence in war to "legalized killing" (let alone "legalized murder") is to equivocate a soldier's duty to nothing more than a thug pursuing his own good.

War is about forcing the other nation to surrender. The killing is a natural consequence of the conflict, but it is not the *point.* Were the killing the *point*, it would be nothing more than "legalized murder" and the greatest Evil known to Man.

War may be hell, but it is not (inherently) wrong.

But you don't kill him (in a war) "without any other reason than he is the enemy." His *death* is not the point. If it is reasonable to capture him, soldiers do so.

His death may be necessary, or at least expedient, but it is not the point. The point is to make his superiors realize they will not win by force of arms, and so to surrender.

they make outrageous accusations (racist! Nazi! evil racist Nazi!) and then when we predictably demonstrate the outrage that they provoked, they say "now now, calm down and let's discuss the issues rationally" - that they have no interest in discussing rationally - and then they proceed to the next wave of epithets.

their goal here is just to push the narrative that conservatives are evil war-mongering Nazis. nothing more, nothing less. this has zero to do about the war itself or the morality thereof.

it is all in service of a political agenda. full stop.

181 The concept of limitation in warfare, in a way, makes no sense.

The original (as I understand it) point of things like the Geneva convention makes a great deal of sense. If we allow pure barbarism and atrocity to rule the battlefield, we'll have nothing but a never-ending cycle of "wars of revenge."

Thus we limit our behavior in war to help stave off the next for that much longer.

What does not make sense is the current concept of restrained war, wherein you fight down to your opponent's standard. It makes war more horrific, because it extends the conflict, thereby increasing the cost (both monetary and human) incurred.

Not true.

It wasn't even true in WWII, WWI, or any war prior to that since the beginning of the modern era. If you see an enemy you can reasonably capture, you capture them. Killing them with no chance to defend themselves would always get you a court-martial (in theory).

The fact that people use war as an excuse to get away with bad things does not change what war *is.* War is the ultimate expression of diplomacy.

What a wonderful pair they were, so funny. And I found it kind of endearing to listen to the commercials woven into the script; product placement is as old as the hills apparently. How about we focus on actual, I don't know, conservation? That would be nice. The first part of conservative is conserve after all.

Here's a radical idea. If we focus on pollution and practical and realistic energy policy and balancing the need for growth with the need to preserve nature then, get this, to the extent that there is a man made portion of global warming, that will take care of itself.

You want more animals? Put the hunters in charge of the herd.

You want more green space? Privatize to at least some degree.

You want actual environmental progress? Dismantle the EPA.

Let's see...

It is certainly true in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It was true in Vietnam
It was true in Korea.
It was true in WWII (remember- we're talking seeing a lone soldier taking a crap, that was the set up, not a lone soldier with his rifle up).
It was true in WWI.

It get hard going much further than that, but it was true (in theory) for British forces in the Revolution.

It was true in most armies in the 30 Year's War.

Killing an enemy soldier who is incapable of his own defense has been (technically) a violation of various war justice codes for a long time. Sometimes that gets... muddied. Sometimes it even gets ignored. Other times soldiers get away with it even when the officers are serious about enforcing such rules.

That does not change the fact that the expectation is that we capture enemy soldiers when practical (say: they can't defend themselves), and that murdering them is, well, murder.

The practicalities of the situation often make it murky, that's granted (to the point I shouldn't have to be addressing it).

You can't capture the SEAL community in 1 movie. I'm an outsider and I don't understand it myself. I've worked on little projects and things with them, but still it's a mystery to me.

Some time ago a bunch of us had a discussion about war.

Came away with this.

War must be entered with the committment to win--otherwise it is an exercise in futility.

In order to win a war, 2 things MUST be accomplished.

The enemy's ability to wage war must be denied.

His will to wage war must be broken.

How this is done involves strategy, tactics and logistics.

Failure in either of the 2 primary objectives will ensure that you land right where we are today, for an example.

270 it ain't easy. Jihadi rolls out with an AK, empties a mag on your team. Kills your best friend. Then, he drops the gun and goes back into his home and doesn't surrender. You DO understand this is how they fight, right? So what would *you* do in that scenario?

I used to be an 0331. I would probably expend a belt.
Discussing such matters is far easier here, than living it and surviving it. Further, I understand that at several points, things got savage, as when after Malmedy soldiers refused to surrender and refuse to accept it, especially SS. It happened in the Pacific. A lot.

271 I am talking reality, not some philosophical point in right and wrong.

No, you were claiming that war is state sanctioned killing. That and that only.I pointed out there are limitations. Congrats; you realized, along with everyone else, that war is Hell, and that in the midst of chaos and violence, violence may occur.

US personnel can and have been prosecuted for such actions.

272 Boys Boys no need to fight amongst ourselves here. Let's remember who the real enemy is:

It's all situational, and you never know what you'll do until 1/2 a second before you do it. So it was actually unfair of me to present a nonsense scenario.

And actually, normally I assign people the MOS of "1 Delta 1 Oscar Tango" when they pontificate on things like this. I fell into the trap. Bloody hell.

for every round fired or bomb dropped there's 80 lawyers charging $80/hour to determine if it was "justified."

Well, I noticed that most of those on your side of the argument went first to name calling and casting aspersions on my intelligence and my political leanings. What does that say for their argument?

282 I think I started this war discussion with a poorly articulated argument above. This thread is probably dead, but I'll clarify anyway.

It is often the case that we can look at ourselves and our enemy and notice some apparent similarities. Noticing these similarities is not a crime in itself. The conclusion that follows, however, can be. Such as..."We are just as bad as they are" (The Liberal asshole conclusion.)

They fail to recognize that the real difference is that we are the good guys, and they are the bad guys. I was just trying to make the point that there is nothing inherently wrong with the initial observation as long as you come to the 2nd conclusion.

Point taken. IMHO, we are ALWAYS the good guys. But trying to pretend war is anything but what it is, is a rationalization, and changes none of the facts, it just makes people feel better about it.

285 Of course there's the possibility we are being subjected to Psyops designed to make us ready to accept a major intervention in Syria to help a friend. There's always that. It's not like they haven't been trying to force this outcome. I do recall a botched sarin gas false flag in Syria a couple yearsx ago. So there is definitely an element that wants Syria brought to heel.
