So the local Boston CBS affiliate tracked down some of the #BlackLivesMatter protestors who blocked Route 93 last week and were arrested. Shockingly they did not appreciate being approached at their homes by the media. Well not their homes - mostly their parents' homes.
And Jim Geraghty weighs in on these protesting rage-whiners:
Storming into bars and restaurants, locking themselves to concrete-filled-barrels and blocking Interstates. this is the progressive grassroots of 2015. This is the Left, capital-L. The WaPo reports that Danielle and Alexander Meitiv in Montgomery County Maryland say they are being investigated for neglect after letting their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter make a one-mile walk home from a Silver Spring park on Georgia Avenue on a Saturday afternoon. "We wouldn't have let them do it if we didn't think they were ready for it," says Danielle. The Meitivs say they believe in "free-range" parenting, a movement that has been a counterpoint to the hyper-vigilance of "helicopter" parenting, with the idea that children learn self-reliance by being allowed to progressively test limits, make choices and venture out in the world. He felt like the ship was sinking and no one was telling him, so he ditched his guitar and went below deck to discover the Indian Ocean hanging out in the hallway. There were charts and things haphazardly laying around, like in some kind of post-apocalyptic movie.
Considering there were exactly zero officers or experienced sailors aboard the ship at this point, Hills essentially appointed himself captain of the Oceanos. He got on the radio and put out an SOS to a nearby ship, which started asking tons of technical questions about the situation on board. Taking Hill's lack of maritime knowledge as a sign that they were the victims of an elaborate prank, they asked for Hill's rank, to which he responded "guitarist."

Was nice to be converting pine into sawdust today, under a warm Texas sun. Built some shelving for my local computer tech, on barter for his techspertise.
Bonus, his highly attractive wife is a budding woodbutcher in her own right, and had volunteered to help and learn on the project.
She's got skills, but has a lot to learn about safety. Such as not ever reaching over the blade on a running table saw. Cutting 8' sheet of plywood on the long axis, 18 in. from the fence, so there was no guard on the saw.

For several years I have been reading and occasionally commenting on the ONT. During that time I have kept a secret. My beautiful and loving wife lost her long war with cancer today. I kept her cancer a secret because I wanted at least one place in my life where people did not know. For obvious reasons that could not be work, family, or friends so it ended up being the ONT. Unfortunately, many of you know exactly what she and I have been experiencing, and I hope that you will understand my need to have someplace where cancer is not always the topic, or that unstated elephant in the room that everyone carefully does not talk about.
I am not sure why her passing makes a difference, but it does, and keeping the secret just no longer fits. I guess it might be because I have absolutely no idea what I will do now.
Please avoid feeling like there is something you should write, say, or do. I already know your hearts from years of reading comments here. I know you would do what you could, but there really is nothing that I need from you. I have a strong family that loves me and they will rise to this occasion as they always have.
I was blessed with 25 years of sharing my life with a wonderful woman. It was worth every minute and it was worth the pain I am feeling now. I know I am in for a tough year and more. But I will heal, and I will go on. And, I am very relieved that her suffering has finally stopped. When a loved one dies after a long illness the grief process is different from the shock of a sudden death. I have had a long time to prepare, for whatever that means.
Over the years many of you have shared your trials on the ONT and I have added you to my prayers. I know you will do the same for me. God bless.
And, keep smiling, laughing, and kidding around -- because after all, that really is what I am thanking you for doing.

A lot of universities don't allow that (for undergrad at least). At my undergrad university, there was a maximum number of unit, unless you got special dispensation. Due to a major that required a lot of classes, a minor with enough classes to be practically a major, a plethora of GE classes, and lots of credit from community college/AP tests, I exceeded the maximum by half a unit...

I'd say it's arguable that they have, at least certain forms of delusions.

I hope you know Backhoe passed away peacefully in his sleep on a Thursday last month or it may have been in November. He lost two loves of his life he'd married.
I mossed news because it was posted in Morning News Thread & I usually skip that to take a shower etc. I read it a few days later & we know only because Rick (p?) belonged to same blog & found out via FB notice & posted what he knew & it wasn't much, but Backhoe had told me several times he was old & sick, but I didn't realize he was really sick.
He gave beloved dogs away because he couldn't care for them in July.

I know children of liberals who majored in non STEM degrees but they aren't chaining themselves to barrels in the streets. One went back and got some kind of computer science degree and now has a job (Yes, mom and dad paid for it, but at least he shows gratitude for that) and the other one is taking a job as a unpaid Congressional intern (I know! I know) but at least it gets her back in DC where she wants to be for her career interests, and at least she took the initiative of finding something instead of fruitlessly protesting on the streets of NYC.

As the father of 2 girls who will be graduating in May & December of 2015, I found out the UW system has the first 2 years taking general courses. A 4 year degree is almost unheard of. 5 years is now the average. There are probably Schools out there that are different. These 2 girls have changed their majors at least twice in their first two years.

Much easier now with the internet, just watch a trailer a few times, crib other people's opinions etc. Back in the day, you'd haveto rely on just reading the back cover blurb on a book, or hear the single on the radio, or catch the trailer at a theatre. I was going to say I would have done the same if my parents hadn't insisted that I work, but actually I don't think I would have. My parents were old school. Crap, I couldn't hang out with my boyfriend in the basement rec room and listen to Pink Floyd albums without my mom coming down the stairs every 10 minutes to do the wash or "get something" from the laundry room. Had to pay rent - and do chores and go to church and I was expected to call home when I was out late. So I couldn't wait to move out so I didn't have to do those things anymore.
Nowadays, I think a lot of kids stay at home, not just because they're unemployable but because if you can have your boyfriend or girlfriend over for the night, smoke pot and do what you damn well please, well, being at home isn't so bad for them. They can raid the fridge and it's more comfortable and much cheaper than a first apartment. If being an independent adult isn't a priority for them (and obviously it isn't for these little turds), well, its a cushy situation.

You know, if they were studying the great works of Western Civ I wouldn't consider it wasted time.
I know a woman who sent her son to St. John's University in Annapolis and he did their Great Books program. They do Socratic debates in their classes. He got out and worked for a few years at a radio station before going to law school. He credited St. John's with really teaching him how to think and construct logical arguments and debate.
The problem is that at most universities, Liberal Arts has come to mean Womyn's studies, or Marxist deconstruction or reading trendy authors of color and learning that America is Evil. So they come out utterly useless instead of being truly educated.
A person who is widely read, knows how to reason and write well can be taught other skills or will do well if he or she goes back to get a more technical degree. But if all you learn is crapola and yay Socialism and boo conservatives, your degree is worth shit.

Why it's almost as if it's in the universities best interests to keep the kids there as long as possible. The more years it takes, the more money they can suck out of them. When I went it was the norm for people to graduate in 4 years. Almost everyone I knew graduated in 4 years. This is deliberate.

Heh, I'm in the same boat. I've noticed that the results have already made their way into professorships. One of my profs last year is Che-level left; in one of his other courses one of the required books is actually Rules for Radicals and he does a lot of work for the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party. I spent almost every week slicing and dicing his rhetoric with logic and facts. Evidently it was his first time having a 40-something conservative as an undergrad student.

The harsh truth of the matter is that only a small percentage of the population - ca. 10, maybe 20% at most - has any business in college. Everyone who says he doesn't use what he learned in college in his job - wasted his time there. Most people should learn enough in high school to get them through life perfectly well.

Thanks to the internet and e-books, you can be well read in all the classics for free.
Also, it can be clear that this is a life-long learning process. Heck, some of the best stuff I've read have been outside of any college or high school course.
For example, I read Cicero and Tacitus on my own, and am currently reading about Hittite trade relations!
Heck, who here has read "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" by James FitzJames Stephens? I highly suggest reading it right after Mills' "On Liberty" to grok the difference between "libertarianism" and "conservatism"... or read Polybius to understand the difference between a republic and a democracy/ochlocracy.

I was talking to a leftist school teacher, special Ed, the other day. My jaw almost hit the ground when I heard her say that all these kids that think they can't do things or try to play victim, are because of the school system and teachers/aides telling them that they can't or are victims. She makes the kids do things and teaches them independence, I've seen her. Uh, WOW, I could believe what I was hearing. She also talked about homeschooling. You could have knocked me over with a feather.....

I get the feeling there are a few kids in class that are keeping their heads down for the same reason.
It was pretty shocking to me how little open debate there is in seminar. The kids have to be drug kicking and screaming to participate in discussions. Back in the dark ages, my mates and I used to have knock-out drag-out arguments in just for the hell of it.
The university experience is definitely not there any more unless you go some place like St Johns or one of the catholic schools with a commitment to free inquiry.

I've sat down in the past and tried to plot out the ideal high school education, and by Junior year you're going to school half time and by senior year you've only got two classes. I figure algebra, geometry and basic statistics, physics, chemistry, biology, a class on writing and rhetoric, a class on American literature, US history, Government and Economics, self-defense, "life skills", and a class on the US legal system.
I almost think it would be better if high schools killed the advanced mathematics and sciences and just let students test out and graduate early. Focus on the basics that everyone needs to know to be a functioning adult in society.

Good news bad news. I'm getting good with my fryer and am frying drummettes that IMHO are fully cooked and not shriveled to nothingness due to too much time in the fryer. Also, I finally managed to put on a coating (with a pre-wash in egg yolk) that came out a good consistency.
Unfortunately, my buffalo sauce ain't that great (it's Tabasco's, I should try someone else) and neither was my bare-bones cajun coating (which in fairness is made for fish; it's mealy but at least I finally figured out how to work with coatings).
So all I need are some spicy/smoky wing sauces and coatings that don't suck. ;-)

I had a similar experience. I was talking to a special ed teacher who admitted that of the 40+ kids she deals with, 1 or 2 had actual special needs. The rest were pushed into the class so that teachers and parents could avoid dealing with their issues, or because they got more money from the state.

Pinochet was always accused of terrorizing innocents in his quest against Allende.
The thing is, almost all of the arrests came within a year of the coup. Almost all of the arrestees were somehow connected with trying to fundamentally transform Chile into a commie "paradise" even if they were not directly plotting with Allende's inner circle. While the torture was deplorable, I can not fault Pinochet being thorough and arresting all of Allende's "fellow-goers". After that, Pinochet let things settle down, got the economy on a sound footing, and actually laid the groundwork for a viable mostly-free-market economy and democracy in Chile.
In analogies, it would be as if a "revolution"/coup here resulted in all critical studies professors, Progressive "non-profit" leaders, and community organizers were conveniently taken out and shot outright.
If you are going to do it, you gotta go all the way.

Good for you. Recently John Strossel had an interesting segment on different styles of parenting (free range vs. parents who are absurdly overprotective, perfectionist Tiger Moms vs. "everything you do is wonderful" parents and some kook who doesn't want to "impose gender" on her kids)
The Free Range parents came across as the most sensible.
I remember my father saying to me, "My job is to make sure you can live without me, because someday you'll have to."
In other words, parents have to ensure their kids become self-sufficient adults. Clearly the parents of the Special Snowflakes fell down on the job.

As the father of 2 girls who will be graduating in May December of
2015, I found out the UW system has the first 2 years taking general
courses. A 4 year degree is almost unheard of. 5 years is now the
average. There are probably Schools out there that are different. These 2
girls have changed their majors at least twice in their first two
years.

When I went to school, the standard degree was 4 years, and it cost -- all-in with room, board, books, etc. -- about $11,000/year at the University of California. You needed 180 units to graduate and they would throw you out at 200. I graduated in three-and-a-half years with 202 units because of a 6-unit CPA review course.

4 kids in my family. I had to share a bedroom with my sister and there was only 1 bathroom. So I loved the privacy of my first apartment.
I guess that's a thing too - so many young people now are only children or have 1 sibling. They have their own bedrooms and many houses now are built with one bathroom for every bedroom. So they have more privacy than you and I did.

My ideal curriculum (either high school and/or college) would include a course in elementary logic (affirming the antecedent, denying the consequent, and all that), civics, essentials of credit (the smaller the font on a credit agreement, the more important the information contained therein), and critical reading. By the last I don't mean Commie crapola that masquerades as "critical thinking," but rather learning to really read critically, with examples taken from current news media.
For example, on a recent thread we had the leftists bleating that there were many fast food restaurants where the population was obese, from which they were inferred that the density of such restaurants caused the incidence of obesity. But the data equally well admit of the converse proposition, that entrepreneurs cited the restaurants there because of the population density of dumbshits who would likely patronize such restaurants.
That sort of thing.

Another thing: use Project Guttenberg for textbooks. The math taught in undergrad courses was all worked out by the turn of the 20th century; there are lots of great textbooks available, free, on Project Guttenberg, covering calculus, differential equations, spherical trigonometry, etc.

Wing sauce:
In a sauce pan over low to medium heat:
4 tbsp butter
When butter has melted, whisk in
1 tbsp flour until combined, cook for about 1 minute
whisk in about 1/2 cup Franks or Louisiana hot sauce, mixture should thicken. If you like it spicier, add some habanaro sauce too.
Add some honey to taste
Add pepper to taste.
Pour sauce over hot wings and toss to coat. Sauce should stick to the wings in a nice thick coat. If it's too thick for your tastes, cut back on the flour a bit next time.

One option I'm weighing right now is a free course to gain certification for teaching online courses. I tried taking that class last semester, but dropped out because something about the approach I'm supposed to learn just fills me with revulsion. The assignments and expectations and rubrics are hidden all over the online site like Easter eggs, and I hate feeling like I'm missing something important. I'm apparently supposed to conduct my own online courses that way, and I just can't bring myself to do that to my students!

For those unfamiliar with these beasties -- they can be 16 feet long and weigh 5400 pounds......which makes them only 20 inches shorter and approximately the same curb weight as a 1961 Lincoln Continental. They have absolutely no regard for humans -- you're supposed to keep a 25-foot separation, but when one was crashed out too close the boardwalk, rangers had us pass considerably closer. What they do have is an intense interest in each other -- on one of our previous special-access days, we had to backpedal rapidly when one up the beach spotted his rat-bastard rival in the water and went barreling through the area where we'd been standing to get at him.
If you've been to one of the regular days and were bored about standing on a hill and looking down on seals, the special-access events are quite different and -- while every experience is unique -- we seriously enjoyed when they were doing 'em.

Around here (Silicon Valley, CA -- some of the best climate in the US), one of the things for management is to be careful about women (yes, it's usually women) using space heaters under the desks in their cubies. 'Cause they'll put 'em there and eventually bury them in piles of combustible materials.

At the shop ( http://tinyurl.com/6yhmnu ), I checked the new one and had the same damned "inspected by #38" tag fall on the floor -- whereupon I related my experience of looking at the 1/8" box, the 1/16" collet, and the inspection tag, which got them chuckling. I then noted the wide variety of tools that had a 1/8" shank while noting that 1/16" collets were as useful as tits on a boar.....then, they were laughing outright.

I can second that for the LA area. I've done a ton of contract jobs that sent me into cubicle seas to change out PCs or install something after hours. The space heaters are always found in cubicles with artifacts indicating habitation by a female, typically post-menopausal.
The amount you can with little effort learn about these people by examining their cubicle is remarkable.

No worries. One of the things that burns my ass about this sort of event is that the notifications are handled through cultural channels that deliberately exclude non-leftists. And, then, when all the entitled lefty douchebags hog all the tickets, they turn around and say, "oh, the conservatives aren't concerned about righteous causes like busing East Bay schools to visit elephant seals."
As if THEY were. I guarantee you that 99 and 44/100 of the people who attend the event will be there more for the expanded access than for whatever rinky-dink cause they dreamed-up to throw it.

Eventually they get around to a statement from an economist on the danger to the southeast due to global interdependence. The economist trots out the well-worn statement that we should all be concerned since if "Either Europe or the United States sneezes the other may catch a cold."
In light of the rest of the reporting on the conditions in Europe, sneezing? Haven't they already been sneezing. Economic thought completely independent of any consideration of reality.

I haven't been there in thirty years. It used to be a big hole in the ground surrounded by bars and streets where local aindians and miners could fight over the three or four girls in town. Now, I'm sure it's at galleries and cappuccino shops with an Orvis store mixed in for variety.

Almost immediately after the bridge (really an overpass) fell in Cincy, they were all screaming about "stimulus spending for infrastructure ". At least half of them couldn't tell you what infrastructure means. This includes the LWNJ that relieved me at work.

we have an autistic son. We are hopeful but its pretty clear he will need some sort of financial assistance for his whole life and we will not live for ever

We did all that when we were kids. My grandparents lived in Virginia City, MT and Dad would drive us out there every summer. We stopped in all those places, and more, through SD and the Badlands, Cody, WY...hitting every giant ball of yarn tourist stop and scenic view there was along the way. I still have great memories. Your kids will love it.
