Like a guy goes around turning off all the lights and I say, he seems Anti-Light, and then get yelled that you at, you can't call him Anti-Light cause he hasn't turned all the lights off. This speech is the official end for Obama's presidency. He's proposing things he knows won't go anywhere, in order to set the table for (or possibly poison the well for) the Dems in '16. It will be completely predictable, including the clapping seals on the Dem side of the aisle and scowling GOP on the other. There is more suspense among the mannequins in a storefront.
From here forward, his presidency will consist of dropping turds in the punchbowl. The media, of course, will swoon over each and every one. I'm a political junkie, and I have no intention of watching even a second of it. Posted by: pep at January 19, 2015 12:34 PM (4nR9/) 42

Unless they change it this new tax is not on earned income. It is on capitol gains and inheritance taxes.
Capital gains might be an issue (so expect to see it s-canned), but inheritance taxes are also something only those who are "almost rich" pay. The rich already have everything in trusts and other forms which are exempt from inheritance taxes. The poor don't leave enough to trigger the inheritance tax. So only those trying to advance themselves (and their children) get hit with them. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at January 19, 2015 12:44 PM (kff5f) 92

Not a big fan of Noah "pro-gay marriage, anti-borders" Rothman. Populism is getting play because there isn't a party that seems to worry about the working class in the country. If the Republicans actually put forth an American agenda they would get some traction. Instead they worried about some obscure Dodd-Frank rules after the election that played into the "Republicans only care about the rich" theme.
So, of course Obama is doing this. It isn't a surprise. The problem is the Republicans aren't going to offer anything (border security only, trying to get some manufacturing back in the country, etc) that repudiates him. They'll just do a better "free" community college plan. Posted by: Better Feared than Loved at January 19, 2015 12:46 PM (nRvEn) 109

Posted by: Golfman in NC at January 19, 2015 12:34 PM (GqEzX) No, there are several categories of taxable money that you get. 1. Earned income - normal salary for most of America2. Interest and dividends - money you get from interest on savings accounts and other interest bearing accounts. Dividends are money from stocks and stock type accounts. These are generally taxed at a lower rate than earned income. 3. Inherited income. This is money and assets you receive through inheritance. The federal threshold for this is so high that most people never hit it. However, it is hard on the "family" farm unless the owner takes steps to limit the tax liability. Socialism creates the necessary condition for more socialism.
Once you kill off the expectation (particularly in the young and inexperienced) that you can improve your circumstances by hard work and smarts, you create a class of people who believe "the rich" are simply a hereditary class that they can never join. You can't tax the Welfare class.
*** Actually, why not? Why not treat welfare and all government benefits as taxable income? One of the core problems we have right now is that a certain percentage of the population draws income from the government and pays no taxes so they have NO incentive to ever oppose tax increases. And ironically welfare often much, much better then the sort of jobs that people with few skills can get keeping them on welfare out of rational self interest. The retirement savings crisis in America has brought us to this point: It's a near certainty that mandatory savings accounts are in the future of anyone with a full or part time job.
The world's largest investment firm BlackRock, with $4 trillion under management and a lot of weight to throw around, is the latest to sound the call. "We need a comprehensive solution to retirement savings that includes some form of mandatory retirement savings," CEO Laurence Fink said this week. He added that his firm has been agitating "quite noisily" for retirement overhaul and that going forward "we'll be louder as a firm." Fink's call for mandatory savings accounts is in sync with other prominent thinkers in the retirement savings field. Alicia Munnell, director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, is on record favoring these accounts. She says they should be designed to provide 20% of pre-retirement income. Munnell's colleague at the Center, Julie Agnew, in a study credits mandatory savings accounts in Australia for that country's "high individual saving rates and broad coverage at reasonably low cost to the government." http://tinyurl.com/qygeq67 from business dot time dot com/2013/05/09/ mandatory savings accounts are coming your way Posted by: mallfly at January 19, 2015 12:52 PM (bJm7W) 160

We'll never, EVER get any truthful numbers out of the US government, if they even know, but I do wonder how many relatively wealthy people with dual citizenship have already left the US for their home countries and have dropped off the IRS radar.
The IRS is making life miserable for anyone with US citizenship overseas because they are 'cracking down on tax evaders' which means if you have US citizenship, you have to let the IRS know about all of your assets over a certain amount. That's one major reason the number of people renouncing US citizenship is up. People born in the US but raised in another country like Canada who have never had anything to do with America are being hounded by a broke US government and an out of control IRS. The cost to renounce citizenship has recently risen from $495 to $2300 US. But for every person who has renounced citizenship, including the 'rich' people that appear on the official lists, there are dozens of others who have secretly went home or found another country and have dropped off the radar. That's a lot of revenue. Think France times 100. Posted by: Stateless Infidel at January 19, 2015 12:57 PM (AC0lD) 191

I see some Morons need some edumacating on the different type of economy.
1. Capitalism - an economy that has minimum government intervention and relies on markets to set prices through demand. 2. Socialism - an economy that taxes the more well off to provide benefits for the poor and unemployed. 3. Communism - an economy that has the government owning all means of wealth production and who totally controls what gets produced and sold. 4. Fascism - A socialist economy in which the government doesn't actaully own the means of production but controls absolutely how they are run. The US currently is a mixture of capitalism, socialism, communism, and Fascism. Capitalism is the smallest segment. The US hasn't been a capitalist country in centuries. Eastern Orthodox priests can be married. I think Rabbis can too. It might help their brand, so to speak. My brother goes to a Catholic high school, and is involved in such things; apparently he was approached about going on to a seminary, and said No Thanks. Right now, you're asking a guy in his early twenties to basically lock himself out of a huge chunk of the experience of living life-- along with the, ahem, basic drives that motivate men to do things. In return they get Not A Whole Lot. If you're reeeeaaaally religious, it's no matter, since you'll get your Eternal Reward and all that-- but if there's a microspeck of doubt in your mind, chances are you'll walk. Two things everyone will have to learn to survive the impending chaos :
Make your own yogurt, and how to make your own cheese. Well ok, you'll need to learn about dairy production, and if you are going to manage livestock, you might as well garden, so you'll need to learn about preserving your home grown fruits and vegetable with fermentation. Well, ok, if you are going into food production rather than just consumption you'll need to learn small unit tactics and defense in depth to protect your farm co-op because the hordes of eaters will have their poorly trained and undisciplined gangs looting and pillaging the countryside. Well, ok, if you're going to build your own private army you'll need to know about diplomacy and politics; the art of the deal to form alliances and coalitions with neighboring warlords. Well, ok, if you don't want to be over run by hostile neighbors you'll need the win the science and engineering competition so your logistics and weapons development is more productive than the fundamentalist religious warlord in the next county. So.. then....you'll need to control water, both surface and subsurface. You don't want to be at the mercy of some distant governor who turns off water you need for irrigation. . . and you'll need solar power because hydrocarbons will be embargoed by those groups who have control of them. Unless you have enough surplus to trade your surplus for diesel fuel. and border guards. You will need border guards. Czars, we're gonna need Czars, commissars, and action committees, and organizers, and program administrators. Posted by: Serious Wong at January 19, 2015 01:03 PM (jnpRd) 211

I understand not having priests marry since devoting yourself completely to a ministry really does make it hard to devote yourself completely to a family. About 15 years ago, we had the NYS Unified Champs here at my hometown high school. 4 guys headed to D-1. One ended up in the NBA. Another is now in the NFL. They could have beat almost everybody 162-2. The starters hardly got to play most games because they were on the bench by the 2nd quarter, because the coach didn't want to embarrass the other teams. One game they tried playing a guy named Paul Harris for the whole game (he was headed to D-1 Syracuse) with a BROKEN SHOOTING HAND. Harris couldn't even take a shot, but he had like 15 rebounds, 5 assists and a couple of steals before they pulled him. The team was so good, even guys with broken shooting hands had to sit! To summarize from wiki;
In 1 Corinthians 7:8 Paul the Apostle indicates that he was unmarried: either single or a widower.[15] In 1 Corinthians 9:5 he contrasts his situation with that of the other apostles, including Peter, who were accompanied by believing wives. Paul, says Laurent Cleenewerck, a priest of the Orthodox Church in America and professor of theology at Euclid University, clearly favored celibacy, which he understood as "a gift".[16][17] Cleenewerck supports this statement by quoting 1 Corinthians 7:5-8: [...] Similarly, Philippe Delhaye wrote: "During the first three or four centuries, no law was promulgated prohibiting clerical marriage. Celibacy was a matter of choice for bishops, priests, and deacons. ... The apostolic constitutions (c. 400) excommunicated a priest or bishop who left his wife 'under pretense of piety' (Sacrorum Conciliorum nova et amplissima collectio 1:51).".[24] and you will note that most Orthodox priests are...married. Because the orthodox church didn't have the same problems with landed religious rulers that the Catholics did. Overall, whether a Christian denomination allows marriage for religious figures seems tightly related to the idea of church land...just look at the Protestants who came to prominence at the same time as helping secular rulers claim church lands... Liberals have completely forgotten the Laffer Curve and the purpose behind it.
They hear the word "Laffer" and they have a knee-jerk reaction that it's some kind of right-wong plot launched by Reagan. Not so. The Laffer Curve is actually an extremely liberal idea. It is at its core a Big Government concept. But liberals are now too stupid and ignorant to know even that. The principle behind the Laffer curve is this: We know that if you tax people 0%, the government will get no income. We also know that if you tax people 100%, the government will also get no income -- because if there is no motivation to work (i.e. the government will take ALL your wages), then people won't work, and there'll be no income to tax. So, reasoned Arthur Laffer, there must be a level of taxation somewhere between 0% and 100% that MAXIMIZES government revenue. Note that the goal is to maximize government revenue. The goal is not to "lower taxes," but rather to find that 'sweet spot" which will result is the most thriving economy and thus provide the greatest tax revenue for the Feds. Real-world analysis of history has shown that an overall combined tax rate on everything of about 32% has been the magic sweet spot to produce the most revenue for the government. (Fantasy-world on-paper theories by liberal economists place the number at 70%, which is just bullshit they threw out there to counter the real data.) Now, the combined tax rate on everything is already way over 32% as of today. (The rate includes not just the standard "income tax" but all the taxes you pay for everything all added up.) I don't have the numbers at hand but I think it's around 50%. So Obama's proposal is consciously pushing the tax rate even further beyond the apex of the revenue curve. As stupid as everyone in his administration are, they at least surely know that. So therefore the only possible reason to jack up the tax rate even more is to punish the successful, euphemized as "redistribution of wealth," which of course is nothing but socialism, which is itself just another word for "envy." If Obama was an actual "Big Government liberal," he'd try to adjust the tax rate to hit the peak of the Laffer Curve, and thus maximize government revenue. But he's not: He is actually sacrificing government revenue as part of his Marxist plan to weaken the nation on purpose. Now, if you favor a small government, then the Laffer Curve should not be your guideline, because for you (like me) the primary goal is individual freedom, not maximizing government revenue (and thus size and power). So it would be preferable to have an overall tax rate on the lower down-slope of the curve -- slightly less revenue than could be extracted, but more personal freedom for the taxpayer. How about actually reading the Bible and realizing that Paul never said "priests can't marry" because a) he never talked about priests (a priesthood came later) and b) he actually said "It's better not to marry, but since there's so much sexual immorality, go ahead and get married." You're right. The Bible says what it says. And the Catholic Church requires celibacy from its priests (well, most of them, not all who are part of the Catholic Church adhere to this principle) based on Biblical texts. Paul doesn't command it. He would have never thought it was for him to do so, but my point is THE CHURCH bases its restrictions on Biblical text! Yes Obama is a blatant socialist (in his speeches and policies, but not in his own behavior, of course).
But I don't think a majority of the country wants to hear him called a socialist. Even if it's true, they reflexively withdraw from the name calling. That's your typical moderate LIV. That's how Obama won his reelections: he had these ridiculous policies and ideological stances, but in his speeches acted above the fray and portrayed his opponent as the divisive politician. I think if we want to get the moderates, we have to avoid calling Obama a socialist even though it feels good just to call him out on his BS. If we don't stick to specifics and demonstrate why his policies are wrong, and just take the easy way out and call him a socialist, then we won't win a majority. A lot of people aren't Obama lovers but don't want to hear him called a socialist. They want to hear solutions. They perceive that Obama is trying to help out the little guy, even if it's nonsense. They need to see from the other side how our solutions are better. It sucks, because he is a socialist. He's unpopular unless he's promoting wealth distribution and divisive policies.
Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at January 19, 2015 12:44 PM (kff5f) The Estate Tax is a killer to upper middle class and lower upper class small to medium business owners because it is a tax on "value" rather than income. Small business owner dies, his/her spouse died several years earlier, and he/she has 3 kids. All 3 kids work in the family business, usually earning less than what a non-family member would earn because the family members have an expectation of future ownership of the company. Business owner decides he doesn't want to put the business in a trust because he wants to make sure that he/she has control over it, because fuck Obama, he/she did build this business. Let's look at his/her estate: His home is worth $300K Personal property is $100K His investments are $400K Now his/her company Cash flow $500K Cash on hand $200K Real Estate $600K Now, usually the company would be appraised at about $5.6M, but if he/she is like a lot of small/medium business owners, they are not trying to squeeze every nickle out of the business and are re-investing in the business, so the appraisers decide that the cash flow should be more like $600K a year, so they value the business at $6.6M. So here is the estate tax situation: $300K $100K $400K $200K $6.6M For a grand total of $7.6M. Now the Feds/state want their money, and they want it now, so you will need to fork over about $3.8M right fucking now. In a situation like this, it is very hard for the family to come up with the cash or even get a loan to pay off the taxes, so the only alternative is to sell the company. That usually means to a much larger company, so there goes another small/medium sized business out the door, and hello to a much larger company. BTW, as a result of this, 10-25% of the workers at the old company have been given pink slips because they are redundant, and the new company will probably not be investing in new equipment for a while because they need to service their debt first. Good news is that there is also one less competitor in the marketplace, so consumers will have less choice, and they will probably now pay a higher cost, but it also means that the government has one less company to lean on to accept their new regulations. The Caucus, founded three decades ago by Norman Lear, Aaron Spelling and others, has set a meeting Monday to determine whether to stick with its plan to give a Spirit award to Cruz after some of its more liberal members objected to the selection, and some threatened to quit if the decision wasn't reversed. the hollywoodreporter.com Posted by: artisanal 'ette at January 19, 2015 01:46 PM (IXrOn) 350

weaselzippers, whilw looking for something else - another idiot at work in NYS: On Sunday, New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced the Anti-Poverty Opportunity Agenda, a 10 point plan to combat poverty and fight inequality. The plan includes raising the statewide minimum wage in 2016 from $9.00 per hour to $10.50. However, since the cost of living in New York City is so high, Cuomo plans to up city minimum wage to $11.50. Posted by: mallfly at January 19, 2015 01:30 PM (bJm7W)" Raising the national minimum wage is a smart policy for high cost states like New York. It prevents employers from being able to take full advantage of moving to lower cost of living places by requiring them to pay higher wages than the market would result in. This results in more unemployment in the low cost areas and less unemployment in the high cost areas. Creating a state minimum wage that is higher than the national minimum wage just accelerates the movement of employers out of the state. It does not make economic sense but it is popular among the economic illiterates who make up the base of the Democratic Party. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at January 19, 2015 01:48 PM (KDbAT) 355

I merely said the Church bases its position on priests and marriage on scripture. Until he came up against U.S.Grant who wrote in his memoirs that he was not particularly impressed by Lee's skill as a general.
- I'm not bad mouthing Grant but his basic strategy was the Devil's math. He knew he could sustain far more casualties than Lee could. He was basically the Energized Bunny general, he took a licking and he kept on ticking. For example, he was whipped at the Wilderness every bit as badly as Booker was whipped at Chancellorville but Grant.just kept on keeping on. Posted by: The Great White Snark Plus, Grant v. Lee didn't occur until very late in the war, when the CSA was clearly on the wane and the US ascendent. ANV's veteran manpower was severely depleted, supplies were low, remaining railroad routes to connect states were circuitous and rolling stock in poor condition. Repeating rifles were becoming much more prevalent in US units, and CSA didn't really have any answer to that. From what I have read, my impression is Lee did a very good job with limited resources. He was heavily dependent on Jackson for tactical success, whose death sorely hurt ANV after Chancellorsville. Grant was an excellent commander (my opinion on this subject has changed in recent years). He possessed good strategic vision (both in recognizing the winning strategy of attrition as well as in strategic maneuver). He identified his objectives and then pursued them with a dogged, iron will--and that separated him from most of his predecessors in East. The war was basically a stalemate in the East, and was won/lost in the West, where CSA was mostly outmatched through the whole event. And, longbows and carpet. There are so many accounting gimmicks and tweaks and shuffles going on within Fedzilla that the official deficit figures can no longer be trusted. (As with the official inflation figures, the official employment figures, the official welfare use figures, the official military readiness figures, the official VA waiting time figures, et cetera.) For example, on one single day late in 2014, a hundred billion bucks suddenly appeared from out of nowhere on the debt books. Boom. I use Treasury's debt-to-the-penny tables to figure out a more accurate picture. Between the first and the last days of fiscal (not calendar) 2014, which is the period over which the ostensible "$480B deficit" is calculated, the actual debt increased by $1.076T. I will now slink off to the Barrel for contaminating the blog with math. I found one of the quotes, and substituted the name "Robert Gould Shaw" for Chris Kyle. I substituted the American Civil War for Iraq, and of course, the movie title "Glory" for American Sniper. You can play with other quotes, such as the nonsense about Iraq having nothing to do with Al Queda vs. Civil War having nothing to do with the KKK. I'm not arguing an equivalence. Far from it, but I am suggesting you could not write the kinds of criticisms they are making about American Sniper that you could about ANY OTHER AMERICAN CONFLICT. But DoD's numbers are in ridiculous disarray. They'd never be cleared as clean by any private sector accounting auditor. No, it's not. The debt increases if the principle is not paid down, but it does not simply increase "just because." If debt were never retireable, it would be accounted for differently (also- we wouldn't have an economy based on it). The national debt keeps growing because we keep adding to it and because of interest. If we merely stopped adding to the debt, it would still increase (because that's how interest works). If we stopped adding to the debt AND starting making actual moves to reduce the principle, the debt would go down. Funny. Governmental debt works the same way that business or personal debt does. Nope, wrong. The circumstances when the Pope is "infallible" are specific and limited. Which is to say, almost everything that comes out of his mouth is not considered to be "infallible," and indeed, those pronouncements he does make about what is and is not true faith, are RESTRICTED precisely because the body of the Church (and the Holy Spirit) does not allow a mere human to make such pronouncements on his own. Do you remember how much your health insurance was going to decrease and how you would get a tax break for Obamacare? Where is that money now; where are those jobs? Where is your tax break? You know what else features DRM (Digital Rights Management) these days? Kitty litter. Welcome to the future, people. Now, even your cat's crap comes with a steaming side of corporate crap.
Last week, cat-lover and programmer Jorge Lopez detailed his experience with the CatGenie -- an automatic, self-cleaning cat litter box. As Lopez describes it, the CatGenie is "the Rolls Royce of cat litter boxes" -- all he has to do is replace the CatGenie SaniSolution SmartCartridge on cue, and the CatGenie disposes of foul-smelling cat turds on its own. Lopez was enjoying the hands-off, CatGenie high life -- that is, until he ran out of SaniSolution. In a pinch, he decided to refill the cartridge with water until his new order of CatGenie-branded cartridges arrived in the mail. He popped the refilled cartridge back into the litter box, fully expecting the cleaning mechanism to whirl back to life. It didn't. "... [The machine] knew this wasn't its SaniSolution. Somehow it knew," Lopez writes on Medium. "I wasn't able to even force it to run without the solution. I did some Googling, and I found that the 'Smart' in SmartCartridge is that it has an RFID chip inside of it to keep track of how much solution it has, and once it runs out, well, you can't refill it. I honestly did not believe this and tore one of the cartridges apart, and there it was, looking back at me, a tiny chip holding up its little metal finger." He's just adding to the world's misery and chaos when he makes his political pronouncements.
Some people have Encyclopedic memories. Not me. I have a Dictionarypedic memory about most major religions. It's pretty simple rule in Catholicism; unless there are years of rumors, followed by about 18 months of pronouncements of impending 'infallible' Papal papers -- then the Pope is just giving his opinion. We don't have to like what he says, but he's allowed to have an opinion. The former Pope recited some past writings on islum and got a buncha people killed when muslins proved how peaceful they were. If you're looking to Rome to provide the answer to islamic terror, you're wasting your time. The Mad Scherzer deal is fascinating, at least in outline. The Nationals are supposedly going to pay him $15 million per year for the next 14 years, said one report. Today, interest rates are very low, thanks to our disasterous economy and a Fed with both feet and a couple of cement blocks on the market interest rate mechanism. As inflation takes hold over the next few years that won't be true, and if the newspapers are to be believed, Scherzer is taking all of that risk. This could turn out to be one of the best contracts ever signed by a team if interest rates elevate by a lot, a very good deal if rates rise by a little and market rate for an excellent pitcher if rates rise by not at all.

The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and teaches that none of those who are not within the Catholic Church, not only Pagans, but Jews, heretics and schismatics, can ever be partakers of eternal life, but are to go into the eternal fire 'prepared for the devil, and his angels' (Mt. xxv. 41), unless before the close of their lives they shall have entered into that Church (Pope Eugene IV, The Bull Cantate Domino, 1441)
So, is that statement infallible or not? Posted by: Better Feared than Loved at January 19, 2015 03:40 PM (nRvEn) 632
