So I go outside to look at the comet and I see something fiery going over my roof. Initially I thought it was a plane on fire but once I got my binos on it, it was a balloon with some kind of fiery payload hanging below it. Some idiot a few streets away was launching these things.

The problem with "gender and migration consultant" is that it never goes away even if the individual in the role gets fired.
Woman I went to school with many years ago, after we parted ways she went Ivy, pedigree out the ass, could have done anything. Anyway, she came aboard a very large research facility as their first diversity specialist. She is horribly unprofessional on social media and nothing short of a perpetually-offended, -ism-baiting spaz. I would not have a job if I behaved like she did - but she'll basically be untouchable given the role she's in. That institution will forever pay one of the unspoken taxes of progressivism by having to employ someone in a role that eats away at actual productive resources or be accused of horrible intolerance. "Then there is the remake of Escape From New York. At least John Carpenter is involved with it. So who should play Snake Plissken? Gerard Butler?"
IIRC, there was talk of an EfNY remake with Gerald Butler in the middle 2000's after 300 was a success. Fortunately those talks fell through until now. There is a kind of unofficial Snake Plissken in Space movie called Lockout (2012). Guy Pierce plays the Plissken-like character (but he's more witty in this) who has to infiltrate a space prison to rescue the President's daughter from criminals. It's not a great movie, but it's not bad either. Posted by: Thrawn at January 17, 2015 10:00 PM (d7XFS) 22

Is Carpenter directing? It's possible to remake EFNY and do it well, but, they're gonna be up against it to do that. I'm not sure EFNY as a remake could benefit from a "what if it was done today" kind of novelty, even if done well. Dunno. It's not that kind of classic. Best left as a part of it's time. In any event, perhaps Mark Wahlberg to fill in for Kurt. Though the Plissken role might not be ideally suited for Wahlberg.

CDR M, I call bullshit on you and Bill Cowan. You don't know who you are talking about.
I personally know Ken Dahl and have known him for nearly 30 years. He is as straight an arrow as they come. I guarantee that the 15-6 investigation is going to lay out the facts. No one can say what the chain of command will do with it, but the report is going to be completely factual. For what it's worth, he is the Deputy Commander of I Corps and Fort Lewis, Washington. That is a retirement job. He isn't going anywhere further career-wise, and he knows it, and the Chief of Staff knows it, too, which I'm sure figures into why he was assigned to do the investigation. If you think you have some inside information or that Bill Cowan is doing anything other than talking out of his ass, which he does frequently, I'd love to hear your facts. Otherwise, this is a gratuitous smear on someone who did nothing to earn it. So, update to the Morning thread from this morning, regarding my sister and the Kentucky Derby baby shower.
Mom and I tried talking her into a classic children's literature baby shower instead. She is a smart gal. And we both spent a large chunk of our childhood summers at the library. She likes to read. I kid you not. The response was baffling. I don't know if she read it on some hippy dippy website, or if it was put in her head by some hippy dippy friend, but it came from somewhere. There's no way she came up with it on her own. Anyway, I guess all her friends have had whimsical baby showers. And, book showers are, and I quote, "pretentious." That's right, folks. Storybooks are pretentious. As she explained it, it implies that your child is going to be a reader and be learned. And, it says to your guests that you are thinking of your child as a future intellectual, not as "just a child with no expectations" I mean, we aren't talking Shakespeare here. We're talking Cat in the Hat and Curious George. I can't believe we have reached a point where children's literature is considered pretentious, and even non-psychos like my sister can fall into the trap of not wanting to come across as offensive to people. Lord help us all. Posted by: TickledPink at January 17, 2015 10:13 PM (RLev8) Posted by: EC at January 17, 2015 10:13 PM (doBIb) 75

About Bergdahl - why would anybody above O-5 be involved? Stack some low-level shit like being 'AWOL' for a day and whatever else he did and his O-3 could do it, then move onto a Chapter 15 Misconduct Discharge (other than honorable). So, yeah, he could be charged with desertion by some 4-star, but he could also be charged by the janitor with puking on the floor and not cleaning it up (and still be tossed out).

I assure you, the current pope is the least of our worries. The real damage to the Catholic church comes from the child molesting priests and those Bishops who covered it up. (Sadly my diocese is one of them) It is also damaged priests and Bishops who have turned their churches and masses into a Sunday morning fundraiser on EWTN. My old parish got so bad, literally every weekend, the homily focused on money. Money and accepting illegal immigration. That was it. My boss loves to give them for Christmas and birthdays and has been doing it for years and there are so few movies I care to see that my passes have stacked up - even though I've given some of them to other people as gifts. 270 251 And, are you happy that the Catholic church has turned into indoctrinating people about accepting illegal immigrants?
I'm Catholic and I have not been indoctrinated. I go to church to pray and hear the gospel and take Communion. I am not bound to agree with them on immigration or the wonderfulness of Islam or politcal issues in general (except for abortion, which is a mortal sin) - only the basic doctrine. The good thing about old Catholic churches is if the priest starts talking like a SJW there are plenty of things to look at -statues, stained glass windows, the Stations of the Cross.... The priest at the Latin Mass I sometimes attends give a good old fashioned sermon. I like that. So does his (mainly young, John Paul II generation) congregation. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (brandishing ampersands) at January 17, 2015 11:06 PM (+XMAD) 306
I guess...and this is coming from a Catholic's point of view...we see the Pope as kind of...a far off ruler. The priests and bishops in the diocese and the Cardinals on a bigger scale are the ones making the decisions, implementing those decision.
And, I think there is a massive disconnect between Rome and some local parish in Omaha or wherever. If a priest wants to talk about money every single Sunday, they can. Theoretically, yes, parishioners can raise concerns to bishops, and maybe something can happen on a diocesan level. But, usually things don't escalate past that level. So, if a priest or bishop is corrupt or goes rogue or anything like that...it's probably not getting back to Papa Francesco. And, I just know from personal experience....people tend to care more about their local priest and what their priest is telling them than what the Pope says. So, part of yesterday's ongoing fiasco with my air filter....I wanted to do some precision grinding-out of the broken-off bolt, so I opened up the 1/8" collet for my mini-mill -- and out fluttered a piece of paper saying "Inspected by #38". Then I looked at the collet and it said, "1/16".
Looked at the tube -- 1/8". Looked at the collet -- 1/16". Sneered at the inspection notice.... Get to buy a 1/8" collet on Monday. Don't know when or how I'd ever use the 1-16" collet. Posted by: cthulhu at January 17, 2015 11:28 PM (T1005) 389

My question is about re-making a black character with a white person. Fat Albert. Urkel. Lando Calrissian. Lt. Uhura. I just don't think it would ever happen.
I think you're right actually. It's not so much protection of artistic integrity. It's protection of black sensitivity. Nobody cares about east Asians (Ming / Chinese) or central Asians (Fremen / Arabs, Persians / freakin' Persians). So the suits'll hire whatever white honky shows up willing to wear makeup, talk with an accent and squint. I don't really want whites to take over black roles, any more than I want blacks to take over white roles. I don't care about racial sensitivities at all, really. I do care about ruining the original author's creative vision. For some reason. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at January 17, 2015 11:53 PM (AVEe1) 461

If you want to save a good dime over Jim Beam, for a smoother Bourbon with a nearly identical profile, then try some Tom Sims Bourbon. Bing searches & reviews, here: http://tinyurl.com/pgltw65 Try it soon, thank me later. Oh, and don't muck about, just buy the 1.75ml large bottle, and be done with it. You'll regret buying smaller. I took a bottle of Sims to the deer lease last month. Everyone with Woodford Reserve, Maker's, Knob Creek and other pricey Bourbons, ended up preferring the Sims. I'm thinking it's work putting a few cases, (yes, literally) into the SHTF storage, to compliment the Val U Rite. The Sims, for my useage. Val U Rite for trade, barter, wound care and engine starting. And yes, Ima go see Sniper, soon. Probably a weekday showing, early as they open. I used to ride a lawnmower engine powered car around in the parking lot. For years, there was a playground where the newer buildings are now. If I had my druthers, they could take a small pair of pliers and rip a piece of my skin off to get their sample -- and the more they talk about "it's so tiny, you'll hardly feel it", the worse it gets. Last time I went in, I told the guy my standard schpiel about "don't bother telling me to breathe, it just annoys me......and if, by chance, I do pass out.....finish the draw." [I'd much prefer the alternative instructions: "if I pass-out halfway through this, and wake up finding out you stopped and I have to do it all over again -- I will hurt you." I have stopped breathing for a minute or two, but have not yet passed out.] Posted by: cthulhu at January 18, 2015 12:32 AM (T1005) 532

Used to love the Kenny Stabler Raiders, back before even the gangs knew they existed.
Was like a biker gang took a wrong turn, and somehow ended up on the 30 yard line, 3rd and long, and the other team owed 'em money. That was football! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 18, 2015 12:39 AM (RzZOc) 546

@352 CQD.
If you want to save a good dime over Jim Beam, for a smoother Bourbon with a nearly identical profile, then try some Tom Sims Bourbon. Bing searches reviews, here: http://tinyurl.com/pgltw65 Try it soon, thank me later. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 18, 2015 12:14 AM (RzZOc) God bless you, sir. I'm no snob, so I'm going to hunt down the Tom Sims and give it a try. Your description kind of reminds me of Early Times, which has a similar reputation. But now I want to try Sims! Essentially, if you were casting a giant badass guy from India in 1967, who had to speak perfect English, who would you have gotten.
It's the same problem with non-humanoid characters. CG can fill some of the gap if you have the budget but actors who can play the parts aren't easy to find. Then there is the problem of making them into exaggerated cartoons if the audience is supposed to empathize with them. That wasn't a problem for the Gorn on Enterprise, which was nicely scary and pretty good for TV. Posted by: Epobirs at January 18, 2015 01:18 AM (IdCqF) 643

I'm certainly not what a driver would consider a good client - or regular, anyway. I may use a cab once every couple of years, so I don't know local regs, just know that it's a racket.
Out of town? Different story. I find a e cent driver, get his cell, and call him directly. Worked everywhere. Chicago - "Take me to the best Blues club in town." "Sorry, sir. I can't take you there - it ain't safe. But I've got a great place for you". Seattle, Denver, Charlotte - good experiences. New Orleans? The first cabby I called was cool. "Mind if I smoke?" "Is it a joint?" "Well, I have one of those, too..." (that was years ago, btw) This guy actually took my drunk buddy home with him, put him on his family couch, then brought him back before 7am to get to work the next morning. Refused to take him out to the seedy side of town. That guy made $1000 in a week of tips just from 3 of us. THAT was a driver. Posted by: shredded chi at January 18, 2015 02:00 AM (JYMMv) 695

Dunno what you mean. You cut the film, one side on a frame line, one side 1 sprocket hole over. Then you overlap them by 1 sprocket hole, put tape across, bring the cutter down, turn the film over and do it again. All of this is done on the rewind table, not in the projector. Here's a vid of the process, although this guy does a butt splice. Overlap splices are stronger (but you do lose one frame of film when you tear the movie down). Posted by: Weirddave at January 18, 2015 02:48 AM (KAmzK) 714
Oh, I know. My BIL is a machinist (well, ex). I know all about welding alum & cast...
I'm thinking rivets. And a big payday when I finish. Sad part is, this guy is five foot nuthin' - maybe 110 pounds, so he wants a loooong ramp instead of something that can just stow under a false floor. Incidentally, didn't you have to project the splices live? Dunno what you mean. You cut the film, one side on a frame line, one side 1 sprocket hole over. Then you overlap them by 1 sprocket hole, put tape across, bring the cutter down, turn the film over and do it again. All of this is done on the rewind table, not in the projector. Here's a vid of the process, although this guy does a butt splice. Overlap splices are stronger (but you do lose one frame of film when you tear the movie down). Posted by: Weirddave at January 18, 2015 02:48 AM (KAmzK) Old Style: While projecting a film, you find that you're getting to the end of a reel. You've loaded the next reel on the second projector. While all the action in the film is directed toward the upper left, there is a blip on the lower right -- you start the second projector. A few minutes later, the action onscreen fades to black......and then the second blip on the lower right. You turn off the first projector. That's the way it was done for all the years before projectors could take the whole flick in one go. Posted by: cthulhu at January 18, 2015 02:57 AM (T1005) 716

There's an episode of Columbo where the intrepid detective gives it a go. And botches it horribly, of course. Posted by: Anachronda at January 18, 2015 03:13 AM (o78gS) 717

It was automated long before my time, although I did occasionally have to do it manually working a side job screening films for, IIRC, an advertising agency. Each reel is threaded on a seven second leader, when you see the first changeover marker(black dot, upper right) you start the second projector. 6 seconds later you see the second dot, you simultaneously close the douser on the first projector, open it on the second, and stamp on the petal that transfers the sound source from machine one to machine two. Then you rewind the first reel, thread the third reel onto the first projector, and in twenty minutes do it all over again going the other way. As you said, old school. Real old school is carbon arc lamps. I never worked with one of those. Just in case you were wondering Xenon bulbs make a wonderful "BOOM" when you throw them off the roof of a theatre into the alley below (or so I've heard *wink*). oh, just read 498 ow ow ow Posted by: chemjeff at January 18, 2015 04:07 AM (9GG/0) Not so much "ow" -- but a whole lot of "this is WRONG". As I've mentioned before, I've had two dental crowns put on without anesthetic 'cause I don't like being a pincushion. You want "ow" -- try prepping a crown. But looking down and finding a sewing needle sticking out of you is decidedly unpleasant. It wasn't very big and hadn't penetrated very far, but it's not supposed to be there in the first place. Try stepping in a scorpion in the middle of the night with bare feet. It feels like an 8 penny nail being shoved into your foot. I've had that happen four separate times... You'd think I'd learn. Posted by: TexasJew at January 18, 2015 05:18 AM (Ma5u/) 734
Throw some dog food out side. Skunks are always getting into the dog food
They especially love Alpo, I've discovered.. Posted by: TexasJew at January 18, 2015 05:24 AM (Ma5u/) 735
I'm diabetic, so I can walk across glass without feeling it. And there's a damn SKUNK in my house.

No dog food available...no dog. Which I suppose is good, as said dog might have caused said skunk to unload. Must have fallen through the chimney.

I actually steeped on three 8 penny finish nails when I was about 7. Went in my right heel bone. Ouches and sniveling on my older brother's part as he left them where I could step on them. What a bergdahl! Well, off to work and then the gunshow!

Skunks on the roof? Is that a thing that happens? They seem more ground-oriented, burrowing sort of creatures.

I don't think that I will be comfortable anymore by calling cowardly murderers "Islamic terrorists" or "radical Islamists". We've got to be careful what we call those people so that we don't insult anyone and "make" them go bugfuck crazy and "make" them kill their neighbors because of Islam. Jesus wept, I would guess.

Juvenile spotted skunk. Turned on the dryer to spook him out. Left some cheap chorizo outside the door. Now awaiting the inevitable raccoon attack. This naturally can't happen in, say, July, when leaving a door open doesn't cost a small fortune...

I once had stapler open for some reason and fumble it so it swung around and drove a staple into my bare knee. I didn't really hurt but that might have been because I was so stunned. I pulled it out easily and it bled a little. That was it. The shock was worse than any pain I might have felt otherwise.
When I was 8 or 9, my brothers, two and four years older than me, were wrestling when the younger found something my mother had lost: a needlepoint needle. Anyone familiar knows these are big blunt things. It went in my brother's leg and kept moving as his muscles involuntarily spasmed from the pain. The hospital used a pair of magnets to hold it in place so they could go after it without making it a fishing expedition. To this day he has a scar at the bottom right of his left knee that looks like a fat earthworm. That was pretty painful but he beat that about seven years later in a motorcycle crash that broke the femur of the same leg and bruised his entire groin. He was airborne for about 15 feet and landed face first but fortunately was wearing a full face helmet. Anything else is a joke. Looking at the front of that helmet later, he would he either been DRT or horribly disfigured. Anyway, after that, he said the needle in his leg was comparatively not so bad. I don't know if I'm the only one like this, but sometimes I look back at things that I did as a kid and I'm embarrassed... today. One of those things is: the times I'd have someone over to my house and would say "you gotta listen to this - it's the coolest song ever!" and would then play them Revolution 9 or something.
Now I realize that this is perfectly normal behavior for a 14 year old. And I realize that I actually got turned on to some awesome music when my friends did this to me, and vice versa - I really did turn people on to some great stuff. BUT... seeing my kids do it, today, makes me cringe because as often as not you can see the pain on the other person's face. "Damn, I have to listen to this crap for 5 minutes or I'm being rude..." You can read their minds, and you KNOW it was that way when YOU were 14. So I watch the Secretary of State of the United States and WHAMMO! I am transported back. It's not "tone-deafness." It's so far beyond that... I'm not sure there are words for this. We have juveniles and imbeciles running our country. That's the only conclusion that fits this bizarro-world scenario...
