This week, I was suffering from writer's block. Usually, something stupid happens during the week (with alarming regularity during the Obama administration), and it inspires me when it comes to this thread. Not this week. It's not that there wasn't stupid happening, Gods no. I think this week the stupid reached critical mass and my "Calgon, take me away!" fuse blew.

So I'm staring at a blank screen, and I think to myself "Self, maybe you could write a thread on all of the failed columns you tried to write that didn't come together.". "What a smashing idea self, I'll get right on it!". Somewhere between explaining where I was going with "2016 Republican presidential candidate Weirddave addresses the Hispanic media" and summarizing "How the market has reacted to Obamacare" (that one is almost done, I should finish it and post), a common thread leaped out at my brain (scared it too. Brain went under the desk for a while). Why, look what we have here, it's a Fundamental Concept!

Here it is, and I warn you, it's so stupidly obvious that nothing more should be said beyond stating it, but I'll do my best to drag a couple of paragraphs out of its corpse.

The Left thinks they know what's good for you better than you do

I met my wife on a liberal message board almost 15 years ago. The stated purpose of the board wasn't liberal, but almost everyone there made Stalin seem reactionary*. I was but a wee conservative, nothing at all like the proud, accomplished conservative warrior you see standing before you today, my granite jaw preceding my proud Nordic features, a steely-eyed missile man, reaching out to grab the future, take it by it's throat and shake it until it shows me is belly, radiating TRUTH! JUSTICE! AND THE AMERICAN WA... (Easy champ - Gingy).

*Ahem*

Where was I? Oh yes, my online life as a token conservative in a den of liars. I used to argue with these people about everything, and when pressed by facts, they frequently fell back on the tired old trope that people were too stupid to realize that Progs had only their best interests at heart, and if the people weren't so bleeding STUPID, Utopia was within our grasp.

How arrogant is that? "Voting against their interests" was a phrase I read so much that it's tattooed on my eyelids to this day. Name the subject, and if you weren't in line with Proggy doctrine, you were acting against your interests. Oppose abortion? It's against your interest to do so because you don't want to be "burdened" with a child. Hate unions? It's in your interest to love them. Gun rights? Your interest would be served by being disarmed in the face of violent criminals, after all, everyone carries a cop around, right? And so on.

That is, I think, the heart of the appeal of Progressiveism. Progressives are acting from the benign concern for the well being of everyone. By so doing, they are absolved from the consequences of their policies. "But my intentions were good!" is nice. It's comforting. It's a goddamn get out of jail free card protecting one against the actual results. It's also the epitaph of Western accomplishment.

Look, I'm an idiot. What I know is miniscule compared to my ignorance. Recognizing that, I hesitate to tell anyone else what they should be doing. I don't even know what I should be doing, who am I to tell you what you should be doing? I approach life from a position of humility. Progs approach life from a position of arrogance, and the space between those two points of view is vaster than the distance between the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. My approach works in the real world, what have you Progs got? The 100,000,000+ people murdered in the 20th century by Leftists in search of Utopia await your reply. Dig them up and tell them how you have their best interests at heart.

*The story of how I got banned from that message board is amusing. I should tell it sometime.

I think it's more sinister than that. Saying progs act out of their humanitarian beliefs, on behalf of those less fortunate than they, gives them the impression of moral superiority. That's the meme we've been tasting in our mouths for the last six years, from MSNBC et al, that Obama is SOOOO effing smart. It's elitist and arrogant and narcissistic, and nothing at all to do with human suffering. To re-coin a phrase for them: "It's the stupid, stupid".

A corollary is that the Left refuses to admit that people have a right to do stupid things (stupid as considered by others, that is.)

Now, those things may or may not be stupid, as the "experts," soi-disant "intelligensia," "elites," have been known to be wrong on occasion (yes!). But, either way, people have a right to do stupid things, even if objectively they really ARE stupid.

The obverse side of that coin is having exercise the right to do something stupid, the person must now bear the brunt of any problems he's caused, certainly problems he's caused for himself, and insofar as possible, those he's caused for others.

Conservative leaders would have the ability to set the humility aside, and preach that what they are doing is "best" for you, with facts. They can show the prog "compassion" as well. Use anecdotes, analogies. They don't.

I just don't see that many conservatives doing this (especially the GOPe).

It's not that hard, but it seems to be for them. It's cowardly not to.

Reagan did this. He touched the heart with reason.

There is a sports blog (part of SB Nation) that I read (not participate) in because is follows one of my favorites (Cincinnati Reds). Almost all of the active commenters are Progressives and Kos-sacks.

A few months ago, one of the regulars posted an incredibly mean spirited diatribe about St. Louis, because of the Michael Brown incident.
Even this was too much, and SB Nation made them delete it. Ha-ha.
They usually avoid politics on purpose, but when it does come up, it is humorous to read the enforced conformity to thought, with bannings promised to regulars who talk about deviating from the political line.

The Left all want to be commissars imposing their will upon you and each other. Their is nothing fundamentally benevolent about any of it.

You want to read something along the same lines, but in a much longer form? You'd be surprised by how much you'd enjoy Rush Limbaugh's first book: "The Way Things Ought to Be".

I need to buy a used copy off of ebay or such, and replace the copy I'd left behind in the Great Divorce of '99. Same with the sequel, "See, I Told You So!". Far more insightful and prescient than would be imagined by those who dismiss him as just a radio blow-hard.

Those two books speak accurately to your Fundamental Principles, and would enhance and accelerate your mastery thereof.

Don't know if they're out there in digital-land, but I'd imagine that some fifteen to twenty years past publishing, that they very well might be.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is noteworthy for being one of the few pieces of social science research that I actually take seriously. I'd made the same observations empirically, but it was nice to have them borne out in what could pass for a scientific study.

As a case in point, I had a direct report (a Ph.D. scientist, no less) who was a bit thick. At his performance review he cited as his greatest strength his "great intellect."

I thought he was kidding. He wasn't. He hadn't grasped that he was in front of the pack because the rest of the pack had almost lapped him. Again.

Which Seth is lying about or at least unconscious of. He has a "brand" and his business model is to keep others out of the market. Tea Party philosophy, at least, would allow for a lot more competition and a lot more platforms. Seth benefited because he was distributed at the very end of the time when a few corporations ran all of TV entertainment.

I think Seth Macfarlane, if he were 25 today, wouldn't make it.

52 Years ago, in the dawn of Progressive tyranny, I got into a similar argument on Roy Edroso's Village Voice board. I argued that higher taxes and buckling regulation would reduce new business startups and cut employment like nothing seen in the modern age before. My antagonists argued no one would ever "Go Galt", that entrepreneurs would keep entreprenuering right up until they were herded into the camps, and the progressive utopia couldn't possibly destroy everyone's well being.

Since facts have to be shared equally and I was right and they were wrong I thought about going back to told-you-so a couple years back but I realized these aren't really people thinking for themselves and there's no point in arguing with them.

Herbert Marcuse pointed out that narrative and context are the only things that make life comprehensible for many citizens. It's possible to control those people and get them to disbelieve their own lying eyes if you, the political leader, can get them to buy the narrative. That's what's happening on the left-- they are desperate to believe, and will deny the obvious even when it kills them. "Islam is the ROP" even when radical jihadists are shooting up chocolate shops and coffee houses, for example.

SBNation is owned by Vox media. I was banhammered by them after the World Series. One of the writers on the Royals site was lamenting the fact that San Francisco was rioting after their win. I commented that rioting in SF is nothing. One can walk down the street on a sunny day in SF and see a man urinating in his boyfriend's mouth. I'm not going to name it because I'm not going to foster any board wars, but it was a pretty cool general interest board, lots of smart, funny people (Gingy and I were discussing it the other day and we agreed that they're not half as funny as the horde), but when politics came up, forgetaboutit.

How I got banned is a good example. Another poster was posting crap about the benevolent Palestinians and the evil Israelis, and I got sick of it. I told him point blank "Put your money where your mouth is. I'll buy us both tickets to Israel (at the time I couldn't have afforded it, but damn it, I would have taken out a loan if he'd agreed. A tactic I've used in debating liberals: remove all demographic signals from a news story, and ask the liberal for his take on it. They're thrown into a quandary because without those signifiers they don't know the Party line.

For example, I once cited a story where three guys beat up and robbed a college student outside a bar. The liberal, thinking he knew the score, started empathizing with the three a-holes, saying that they were probably poor, and needed jobs and education, should be treated with compassion, etc.

I informed him that the three a-holes were whites (skinheads, IIRC), and the college student black.

End of discussion.

Same thing works with gender. A parent killed his child? String him up. Oh, the parent was his mom? Uh ... uh ...

For my part, I don't need to know race, sex, ethnicity, religion or anything else. Give me the facts, and I'll tell you what I think.

The problem is that most people learn from their mistakes. "Better not do that again." By constantly protecting people from their poor decisions, they are actually making them stupider, and weaker of character. Which naturally increases the number of poor decisions people make. It is a vicious cycle.
