In case you missed my update yesterday afternoon, my wife's surgery went very well & she did not have to stay in the hospital over-night.
Thank you, Horde, for all your thoughts & prayers. I really appreciate it.
It's amazing: fifteen years ago, this surgery would mean five days in the hospital followed by six to eight weeks of bed rest. These days, it's an out-patient" procedure.

The Justice Department announced on Friday that most police departments could not use federal law to seize property from individuals when they have no reason to believe a crime has been committed. Attorney General Eric Holder said in an order that the department would, in most cases, no longer run a controversial asset forfeiture program.
The announcement by the department will not end the use of similar laws that exist at the state and local level.

There is no "local" law that allows police to seize assets before an individual is convicted. And there is only a court ruling that they can seize assets AFTER a conviction. (no actual law on the books)

With temps in the 60s this week, and not dipping below freezing, I'm pushing the season by foregoing the long juans this morning. That's living dangerously for my sick old bod. The long juans may be back on if I have to get out in the cold tonight, though.
Our 20-year-old Sears furnace keeps right on cooking, thanks much to our long-time furnace doctor, but at the end of the week it started screaming. Bearings on the vent fan seem to be going. I had hoped the unit would last out the winter. Now I'm wondering if it will last out the weekend. Wonder if it can even be repaired, the thing's so old.
If the temps will just stay in the 60s, we'll be okay. Yeah. Sure. All the way through February.

The WaPO has a gloss on Holder's action:
A civil asset forfeiture program at the Justice Department called Equitable Sharing. The program has enabled local and state police to make seizures and then have them adopted by federal agencies, which share in the proceeds. The program allowed police departments and drug task forces to keep up to 80 percent of the proceeds of the adopted seizures, with the rest going to federal agencies.
Change wont end civil asset forfeiture abuses entirely, but it will stop local police agencies from circumventing state laws aimed at reining them in. Many states, for example, have imposed stricter evidentiary standards, other states have tried to eliminate the incentive problems that arise when police are allowed to keep the proceeds. Local police agencies have been able to get around those laws through the equitable sharing program, which basically federalizes investigations solely for the purpose of letting local police departments and prosecutors keep the bounties they collect in these cases. Holders policy change will end that.

This is a good clip, but her actual interview earlier in the show dove deeper. I've never seen her show any emotion, but she's upset about this.
She tells you how much of a budget decrease the IRS/administration is whining about, then she blows it all up with Al Sharpton, and the money owned by Federal Employers alone. It's astounding how much money is owed by federal workers (over a billion I believe she said).
