Brothers of Slandered UVa Fraternity Phi Kappa Psi Talk About Their Pain and Damages

Some see a WaPo article; I see a legal brief on damages suffered for a coming lawsuit against Rolling Stone, Sabrina Erdely, and UVa itself.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Phi Kappa Psi brothers sat together in a bedroom, turning the glossy magazine pages as they absorbed the account of a gang-rape that allegedly took place within the brick walls around them.

The University of Virginia students read the Rolling Stone article that November night in utter shock [+$100,000]. A U-Va. junior said she attended a date party at the fraternity house in 2012 and was lured to a bedroom, where a group of men raped her in what appeared to be a gruesome initiation rite. The students were disgusted, emotional, confused. [+$200,000 per plaintiff]

"Some people actually had to leave the room while they were reading it because they were so upset," [+$100,000 per plaintiff] said Phi Psi president Stephen Scipione, 21, a junior from Richmond.

...

Phi Psi members, speaking publicly for the first time since the allegations surfaced, told The Washington Post they went into hiding for weeks [+$500,000] after their home was vandalized [+$250,000 plus costs] with spray paint calling them rapists and bricks that broke their windows. They booked hotel rooms [+$1000 per night] to avoid the scrum of protestors who marched on their front lawn. They watched as their brotherhood was vilified [+$400,000], coming to symbolize the worst episode of collegiate sexual violence against women since the 2006 Duke University lacrosse team scandal -- which also turned out to be false.

Scipione said members of Phi Psi first learned about the general allegations in mid-September, when an executive from the fraternity’s national office called an emergency meeting. There, a Phi Psi official outlined what a university official had relayed about the alleged sexual assault.

"He basically asked if, one, we knew about them and, two, if we had committed it," said Scipione. “The look around the table was complete shock [+$350,000] and awe [+$650,000].”

There are more damages in the actual article.

100 >>UVa might have a defense that they trusted Rolling Stone to perform due diligence, fact check, and had layers of editors.

IIRC, the "victim" had already peddled her story to UVA administrators and they did not buy it. So I would think that having already reviewed the charges themselves they would have at least taken the time to determine the differences in the stories, etc.

No, UVA made a knee-jerk response to get ahead of the media cycle at the expense of the fraternity. Well, all fraternities.

147 Three people have been killed during a terrorism-related police operation against suspected jihadists in Belgium, a federal prosecutor said.

Local residents in Verviers, in the east of the country, heard a fusillade of machine gun shots and explosions.

"I heard a sort of explosion, followed by several gunshots," one local told RTBF. "For the moment, I cannot tell you any more because I don't dare go out to see what is happening."

Another local resident said "machineguns were firing for about 10 minutes."
Federal prosecutors told the Belga news agency there had been a police operation near the centre of the town but did not confirm there had been casualties.

A number of people have been arrested.

"An operation is under way," a source in the mayor's office told AFP without giving further details, while another official said separately that it was "jihadist-related".
The operation is now believed to be over.

Belgian public television channel RTBF also said it had reports of the deaths.
The Belgian prosecutor said the situation was "under control".

It is unclear if the raids are connected to last week's attacks in Paris.

Belgium has been the focus of European counter-terrorism operations since police forces claimed that the weapons used in the Charlie Hebdo and Paris supermarket attacks last week were purchased from Belgian gangs in Brussels and Charleroi.

179 Worth bringing up again at this point that RS have previously run others of these sorts of sensationalized rapey-rape articles accusing imagined cruel patriarchal brutes.

One of them was penned by Nina Burleigh.

That's the same Nina Burleigh who was the senior White House correspondent for _Time_ in the 1990s, and who said that if those damn pesky right-wing Internet bloggers hadn't broken the Lewinsky story, she personally would never have deigned to cover it. Not something the public needed to know.

And who also said she would have been happy to drop to her own knees and orally service Bill Clinton in exchange for his staunch services defending abortion rights.

A further thought: consider also RS having paid _extremely_ dubious journalistic hacks to write crude smear pieces on other topics than rape.

Michael Hastings managed to get one of America's most capable combat commanders relieved for cause by Obama, and forced out of the Army, with an incendiary RS profile of the guy.

An internal Pentagon investigation later concluded that there was no real factual basis for most of the things alleged in the Hastings article. Was the guy with the destroyed reputation and career reinstated? No. Was he paid compensation? No.

Hastings himself went on to die in a late night car crash with crystal meth found in his system; his family said that they had been trying desperately to get him into narcotics rehab.

223 "President Barack Obama's approval rating is on the rise as Americans' views of the economy improve, a poll released Wednesday suggests."

I noted sourly the other day that presidential approval rises and falls inversely with retail gasoline prices.

In 1979-80, Republicans and the Reagan media team had their act together on this simple rule. I remember GOP ads bludgeoning Carter energy policy, showing long lines and "NO GAS" signs and fuel needles on empty. It worked.

Whereas when gas prices rose at the fastest rate in history during Obama's first term, after Obama administration officials said their goal was to get those prices up to "European levels", e.g. $8/gallon equivalent, the Mitt Romney campaign ran zero (0) ads about it. Totally ignored this key issue.

Now, even though Obama said he wanted gas prices to go up, and did his best policywise to make them go up, they're going down because of external factors. And Obama is strutting and preening and taking full personal credit for it. Voters are awarding this with higher approvals. And the GOP are sitting round with their thumbs up their butts again. Saying nothing.

Bring back the 1980 era old veterans who know when to throw a punch.

1. Bureaucracy. It's a ponderous mess in which all of us are entrapped.
2. Cops love to be out on the street busting punks and making a name for themselves. Following up on some paperwork is painful, not interesting.

And one night out drinking when they weren't with us, a week or so before their wedding, one cow-orker goes "Show of hands, who here has seen dude's gonnabe wife's boobs?" And everyone raised their hands but me.

As I've wondered before. There are plenty of real rapes, especially around college campuses. Why did they not use a real rape? My guess is that the real rapists don't fit the agenda they're pushing that regular men are running around raping people. Real rapists are screwed up human beings who assault women for various reasons. We don't have a rape culture. We have a culture of people who are appalled by rape. We try to do something about the freaks.

The reason there are rapes on a college campus is because predators know that there are young women walking around at night on a college campus.

speaking of Lambda Lambda Lambda...

The dim and unfunny Seth Rogen remarked recently about how rape was more accepted in the past. As evidence, Rogen cited the dramatic film Revenge of the Nerds, particularly the scene when David Carradine was in the Darth Vader costume sexing the sorority girl's.

Rogen, in his unfunny way, said, "That's fucking rape, man!" The audience laughed-applaused because it was true and funny.

But was it rape? Really? Forget the fact it was a scene in a movie. The girl wanted sex from Darth Vader who she assumed was her boyfriend. It was consensual, sorta. And so what, anyway. She got the salami. Big whoop.

raping people.

10/15/2014

PERINO: It doesn't make sense. You're missing something very important here. The New York Times has trying to rewrite history and trying to put in place, an idea in people's minds and solidify it. That George W. Bush went to war thinking that Saddam Hussein had a new weapons program, he never said that. And Gabriel Malor, of Ace of Spades, did an amazing job of breaking down, taking President Bush speeches, and showing what President Bush said, is what the world said in 1998. National intelligence estimates that Saddam Hussein had had weapons and he had a propensity to try to reconstitute a program. That was went to the U.N. for what the Congress for, and that's went to war for.

Easy - because the rape issue was just a pretext to tee off on a white male institution, the fraternity. If littering were considered a big deal, they'd have strewn trash all over the fraternity's yard and then howled about that. The rape issue has nothing to do with rape, it has to do with advancing the agenda.

Misses the point. The statement wasn't categorical, it was statistical, and therefore counter examples do not negate the point. All female colleges are notorious for lesbian crap, whether by self-selection or recruitment. (Personal anecdote: I once asked a friend's wife, a graduate of one of the Seven Sisters, whether that widely held view was true. Her response: "You betcha."

Actually cops just out of police academy come in to break up the pillow fight. Because they're inexperienced, they're a bit hesitant when faced with the group of pretty young co-eds in lingerie wrestling on the carpet. They reach in but they're clumsy. A couple of them stumble and fall in with the girls. You do the math.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at January 15, 2015 02:41 PM (oKE6c)"

An awful lot of people meet their spouse while in school. That is just the way it is. Who they marry is going to depend on propinquity. I think that we have established that womens' colleges are pretty successful at transforming young women into feminist harridans that no man in his right mind would want to spend five minutes with, let alone the rest of his life.

When I was in the Army, I knew a number of people who had married Korean prostitutes. Some of the marriages seemed to work most less so.

So given the reasonable possibility that your son will marry someone he meets while at school, would you rather see your son married to a hairdresser, a dental assistant or a stripper?

Even the Rolling Stone article didn't positively identify the frat - even Jackie said she had no idea, but that "a friend" told her that must have been where it happened, a year later. No names, no descriptions that match frat brothers . . .

I'd love to see them all sued, but there just is no case here. Maybe against the individuals who vandalized the house - who are known and still at school.
