Movie sign:

Today Amazon is releasing its first wave of pilots for 2015. Its an interesting assortment of projects but theres only really one thats must-see viewing: The Man in the High Castle.

The Man in the High Castle, adapted from the Philip K. Dick novel of same name and executive produced by Ridley Scott, goes back to 1962 to see what America would look like had the Allies lost World War II. In this alternate universe the United States has been split three ways: the Nazi controlled east coast, renamed the Greater Reich, the Japanese Pacific States on the west coast, and the neutral zone in the center of the country.

The Man in the High Castle manages to evoke a suitably unsettling tone while also introducing a large cast of characters in a way that, while not perfect, makes it easy to follow their storylines and make the last-minute cliffhanger have suitable weight. Its so good you might even forgive Scott for Exodus: Gods and Kings.

Economic costs of psoriasis calculated by researcher as approximately $112 billion in 2013.

Consider a couple of numbers- GDP in the range of what, 14 trillion? roughly 5.5 million people with psoriasis. That 112 billion number seems awfully high. This strikes me as a "butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon" sort of ripple financial analysis, aka BS. This is what passes as science these days.

The essence of moral courage is to expect bad things to happen when you do the right thing--and do it anyway.

Direct water hoses on them. Not water cannon; just plain hoses. You're concerned for them and you want them to be "hydrated". And make sure that the water pools. I doubt that they are in the lee of the wind. When/if they are ready to be arrested, claim that the wagon cannot get there, due to traffic delays.

Ensure that the cops on the scene are supplied with cocoa at regular intervals. Don't forget the marshmellows.

189 Well the high school has chosen another stinker of a play to perform for the spring UIL competition. Last year, they had to cancel the production of "The Rimers of Eldritch" because many of the parents of cast members and the cast themselves became increasingly uncomfortable with the murder, rape, and sexual-themed dialogue of the play. Even whittled down, it was too much. Some key members of the cast withdrew in the final week of rehearsals - they just couldn't take it any more.

Well now it's "The Best of Everything" a pre Mad Men era early 1950's treatment ala "Sex and the City" and "Girls" A terrible story badly written but chock full of sex, premarital sex, extra marital sex, lechery, back alley abortion, death, partner counts, losing one's virginity and innocence, sexual assault and harassment in the office.

They sent home the script for the parents to review. I have forwarded my thoughts to the theatre director and the school principal, namely, not with my daughter in this crapfest are you putting on this piece of excrement.

191 There's enough feminazi bullshit in real life without turning on more of it on purpose.

Unless they turned it to 11 in the second episode, I don't see it really as "feminazi" or really even as super feminist.

The main character- Peggy Carter- has gone from the 2nd most important (or 3rd, depending on how you count) member of the SSR to a glorified secretary in the same outfit. At the same time, in the Captain America Radio Show, she's been completely written out for some fainting-violet character.

Needless to say, she's chaffing a bit.

The rest of the women you meet are much more sanguine about their situation. Most of them are just about to be let go from war-time jobs, what with the war over and all, and are trying to figure out what to do with themselves.

I roll my eyes at some of it, but it's not terrible.

And Jarvis is hilarious.

They were the only ones who ever went after Whitey Bulger during his twenty years of openly running an organized crime ring in broad daylight. Of course all the Boston Cops and FBI were in cahoots with the criminals, so the SP got shut off at every turn. At least they tried.

For UIL one-act, though, you don't want to do Shakespeare because it's too hard to cut down. And if I have to see Anne of the 1000 days again, Imma a cut a b*tch.

But there are much better plays out there. We did On Borrowed Time for UIL my freshman year, and we took it further than my high school had ever gotten in UIL competition.

okay, Agenda 21 has a lot of crap that we as conservatives are opposed to anyway.

but by framing it in terms of this "Agenda 21" it makes us look like paranoid anti-UN nutcases.

I would prefer that we simply discuss the relevant issues involved that are contained within Agenda 21, instead of just dragging the UN into it.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at January 15, 2015 09:19 AM (Zmw74)"

If you plan to remain in New Jersey, you will have to find some politicians to pull strings for you. This will probably cost you thousands of dollars for political contributions as well as probably hosting parties at your house where you persuade other people to write checks to your new politician friends.

You might try to leverage your synagogue membership in these activities. You might persuade other members of your congregation that they should press their elected officials to make the gun laws of New Jersey less onerous but, lets face it, you have a better chance of standing outside the synagogue building and causing it to levitate with your mind than you do of getting a large group of New Jersey Jews to change their views on gun control.

Or you can just move to some more normal "shall issue" state and go through their application process. Although out of state permits are not valid in New Jersey, there are some states that issue concealed carry licenses to out of state residents and those licenses are honored by reciprocity in some other states so this might be of some use to you if you travel outside of your home state. You will probably have to store your handgun outside of New Jersey, though.

250 What gets me about Agent Carter is...

My memory may be all wrong, but IIRC...

After Jack Kirby brought back the original Captain America in Avengers #4? and he had his own series in Tales of Suspense (?) and was leader of the Avengers, Kirby did some stories of the WW2 Cap. That's where Peggy Carter was first introduced. When the WW2 stories ended, we saw her as an old lady. IIRC.

Time traveling from late 1960s Jack Kirby 4-color print to 2015 and Agent Carter of WW2 stars in a live-action network television mini-series. That's just... amusing to me. But, I've been amused to see all Kirby's characters brought to life. Dum Dum Dugan especially.

Mom never threw out my comic collection. It was stolen.

If you are going to watch something on Hulu, I would recommend "Single Handed". In some ways it is kind of like the movie, "Lone Star" about a man who had been away from his remote, small home town but who has returned to be the the law enforcement officer where his father had previously had that job. It is set in a completely different place but it is good in its own way.

258 King James Version in Latin. I love this place.

Just look up the "ten figures" of the Duke Chapel (hint: no Latin required, in the theological sense), and think whether any Imam would allow them to coexist with the call-to-prayer. Something's gotta give there, and I think it's Sidney Lanier.

They already chiseled some on Robt E Lee's likeness (look up why. It's good.)
I expect Savonarola and the Methodist bishops will be next to go. Koran-owning T Jeff may be eaten last, or Luther, who said something nice about them once.

Remember, all land within sound of the call-to-prayer is Ummah, claimed territory.
