That the Republican Party can offer two men of such economic expertise and with presidential temperament and gravitas, should make everyone proud.

The rest is clown show or lacks experience.

33 Trying to determine who the R nominee will be is like going and visiting Santy Claws in the mall around Christmastime.

Sure, you can ask for a pony, that rifle you saw in the store window, or maybe even peace on Earth. The guy with the red suit and beard appears to be listening, and maybe even sort of mumbles something that makes you BELIEVE your wishes will be granted.

But your parents will be supplying you with whatever "gifts" they decide to get you. No one else really has any say the matter, certainly not some drunken flunky who appears to listen to you.

In this case, your "parents" are the Gope. Congratulations, they are going to buy you a cheap magic kit, a Spanish language textbook, and an ugly sweater.

40 I'd like to propose that we stop blaming Obama for everything. Even he can't fcuk things up by himself. He has shoals of advisors, aides, minions, lackeys, spin doctors, spokesweasels, bureaucrat buttboys, nitwit Congresscritters, mendacious academics, and dimbulb deep pocket donors; all shielded by an army of ball-washing presstitutes helping him stuff America down the toilet. All of whom are Democrats.
If we don't treat Obamacare as Democratcare, if we don't tie the idiocies to the Dems then they scapegoat him and get off (relatively) scot free. It's not just Obama and Holder pumping up a race war. It's Democrats. It's not just Obama kissing up to Castro. It's Democrats. It's not just Obama releasing Jihadi bosses into the wild. It's ckufing Democrats. et weary cetera.

Democrats, rope , lampposts. It's the right thing to do.

44 also via Drudge, BMW says every car it produces has wireless communication with the company, allowing BMW to collect comprehensive information about owners use of their cars at all times, including how many people are in the car, where it is, and what its performance characteristics are.

Advertisers are pressing to buy that info from BMW, who-- so far -- have said "no". The next Presidential candidate could piss off all the right people by making it a central platform plank to make it illegal to collect consumer information and disseminate it without the explicit permission of the subjects.

I don't think anyone is snarking JJ. In my opinion, Article V is a last ditch effort with as much risk as reward, and if it came to that, the gloves would come off on both sides.

The Constitution was developed and debated (for the most part) by people who had been educated in rhetoric and logic and who could make a compelling argument. In today's climate, what passes for rhetoric and logic is reality TV and the MSM. Conservatives have no control over that debate. FFS , they can't even control the debate when a stupid bint like Candy Crowley or a hack like George Snufalufagus hold one and when they're competing against joey Choo Choo.

I have NO faith in the GOP to successfully manage a theme or a narrative during such an affair as critical as an Article V convention.

100 When your enemy is destroying himself, buy popcorn:
Recent claims about the number of deaths by alcohol poisoning def got the attention of college PR departments, and they called in The Pinnochio Guy at WaPo.

Virtually none of the college-related drinking deaths were by Everclear inundation, it turns out. Most were "alcohol-related" car crashes, and the bureaucracy slipped up and revealed itself, to wit: the national CDC car crash data are based on the idea that if any participant in the accident, including bicyclists and pedestrians, were over .01,that crash goes in the books as alcohol-related. It's so far out on a limb, even CDC has a warning rejoinder about jumping to conclusions.

Upshot, the vast majority of reported alcohol driving accidents are simply not true. Only three pinnochios, though, because student drinking is An Important Issue.

Shutting down CDC is nowhere near enough to safeguard the public. No one who has any part in their "research" should ever be allowed to process data again. Their degrees and credentials must be cancelled. I also don't want any of them flipping my burgers (or, in NJ, pumping my gas).

Look, the thing to remember is that the Constitution as of right now is essentially dead (or not at all well). Every time SCOAMF enacts an executive order or Congress LETS him do it, and every time SCOTUS legislate from the bench, or the bureaucracy issues 80,000 pages of rules every fucking year, is a de-facto Constitutional Convention.

Article V was the Founder's last ditch firewall of recourse for the PEOPLE. And our state legislators I don't think very much fancy themselves being essentially figureheads, when the original intention was to have them control the most power as the closest reps to the people.

We must trust that the process will do as we want since it is completely outside Washington DC and the Federal government.

How many red states are there and how many commie blue? Do you think that the blue states will get involved in an Article V process and if they do that the ever-increasing majority of red state legislatures will allow shenanigans to get past them?
And when it's all said and done, do you really thin that 3/5ths of the states would ratify anything like that?

So, okay. You can poo-poo it and I hope and pray that all the leftists/cronies feel like you do and ignore it as well.

124 Posted by: @JohnTant at January 15, 2015 08:03 AM (PFy0L)

The real purpose of it is to provide a legal means of the states clawing back power from the Federal Leviathan. Leviathan, however, would not give up its powers without a fight. No matter how legal the result, and even if we got the results we wanted, they'd set about figuring out how to subvert them as soon as they were put in place.

Without fixing that moral issue, the pretense at moral superiority and pride masking itself as compassion that makes Leftists, we're still going to be pulled down into the abyss with them.

There's no such thing as people-proof laws, and even if we win, Liberty will never be more than a generation away from extinction. 162 One problem with our current collection of Citizens is that no-one markets the benefits of our Constitution. Oh sure, everyone can yammer on about Freedom of Speech!!!! to eleventy.

But 75% of American Citizens could not build a cogent argument as to why the country, and they, as individuals benefit by rule of law, and our Constitution, as written.

But, I bet they can tell you what time "Girls" comes on HBO, and what the Kardashians are wearing this week.

169 I have yet to read Levin's book on ArtV but I've picked up a bunch by osmosis. I need to read it so I can be less iggerent. My iggerent questions about ArtV are less about the convention itself going well than about the subsequent implementation. How can it have more teeth than the current Constitutonal system?

I'm not the pessimist some here are about its potential impact and effectiveness, but I also see that it's the misguded masses that are the primary impediment, then or now. I'm excited at the prospect of ArtV, even what's been done toward it so far.

But, yeah, I keep thinking it's like "immigration reform." We don't need reform as much as we need enforcement. ArtV question would be moot if the Constitution as written were respected.

We can debate the outcome of an ArtV convention for years, no ones knows what would happen. We do have evidence that Congress reacts to the credible threat of one. I think a slate of amendments that prohibit unfunded Federal mandates and reverse the direct election of Senators would be popular with State legislatures - popular enough to scare the hell out of dozens of ensconced Senators.

No, that wasn't the failure. The failure was in not recognizing that honesty would become a thing of the past.

The left says: "There's no way to know precisely what they meant because they aren't here to ask, so we'll have to interpret as best we can."

The Founders say: "It says 'shall not be infringed.' English, motherfucker. Do you speak it?"

The left says: "But that couldn't have been what you meant. Not really."

The founding fathers didn't account for people being willing to both lie and accept lies about plain English.

well duh, there is no intellectual consistency from the left when it comes to free speech. they are totally okay with shutting up conservatives because "they're mean" or "they're evil" or something. They don't really care about the consequences of this position because it's all about power. If they are in charge then THEY won't be shut up (so they think). It's only about getting those conservatives out of power by any means necessary.

Sounds good except it comes off as something handed from on high with no justification or *guidance* to the People. The dependent clause instructs the People as to why and hints as to what we should use those arms for, if need be. Which is also lost in meaning unfortunately.

276 Book thread after 250? The autobiography of Trollope has just bee republished. Trollope was by his account a very ordinary sort of fellow: a career postal clerk who wrote wordy novels because he was paid by the word (critics' note: follow the money whenever evaluating 19th cent. literature...). His secondary education, which he found wanting, consisted mostly of "just" Greek and Latin.

He was erm insightful though, selling like the Dickens and cited as an inspiration by the deeply psycho-logical Henry James, despite the dark and stormy nights.

So, for about a century, his closing lines (I reach out my hand from the further shore) were taken to be trite but well-meaning. In the new edition it is "revealed" that they are the closing lines of Vergil's Aeneid. Because nobody in the intervening hundred years ever read Vergil right through to the end.

And that was the old New Curriculum, Great Books, that replaced the three classical languages (Romish, Greekish, and Jewish) with "selected readings."

OBAMA ADMIN TARGETS GUN STORE OWNERS BY INTIMIDATING BANKS NOT TO DO BUSINESS WITH THEM

This is outrageous. The Obama administration via the DOJ is intimidating banks into not doing business with certain types of businesses, including those who sell firearms. It's called "Operation Choke Point" and according to critics, it's gone from simply trying to prevent fraud to becoming the 'morality police'.

According to Fox News, if a certain business type is on the DOJ's list, then banks are told they will be scrutinized closer and will be subject to increased audits if they do business with them. Thus, some business such as those who sell ammunition and firearms are having to find alternative banks to keep from going out of business.

I'm not sure how wide these categories are, but legal business are being targeted.

294 Morning, all. Had a meeting before the thread went up, so here's today's story. I don't like Katherine Hepburn at all, so I like this one:

During the filming of 1938s Bringing Up Baby, Hepburn and director Howard Hawks were constantly clashing. The tone was set on the first day of shooting, when Hawks stood by as an oblivious Hepburn chatted away to cast and crew.

Finally noticing that nothing was being set up, she asked Hawks, "What are you doing?"

Hawks replied, "I'm just waiting for the parrot to stop talking."

Hepburn flushed red and marched over to the director. "Look here, Mr. Hawks," she began, indicating the set, "these people here are all my friends. If you don't watch yourself, something bad might happen."

Hawks looked up into the rigging, where a burly electrician sat net to a huge spotlight. "Charlie," he called up, "if you had the choice of dropping that light on me or on Miss Hepburn, who would you choose?"

Without missing a beat, the electrician yelled, "Stand aside, Mr. Hawks!"

Hope you all have a wonderful day.
