A Crisis Of Faith (Guest Post By Steven Den Beste)

(Guest Post By Steven Den Beste)

No, not Muslims; it's the the western press. The Press have created an ideology over the last fifty years or so that approaches the level of a secular religious dogma. They believe that the Press are like the referees in a football game, present everywhere but not involved in the action. Surrounded by violence, they themselves never contribute to the violence and are never the objects of violence. And they are strictly neutral, favoring no one but simply calling it all like they see it.

Except that they've also mixed in a big dollop of Marxist ideology: they aren't, and shouldn't be, strictly neutral. As good progressives they can and must work against global capitalism and everything associated with it. That means it's OK to criticize Christianity and Judaism, for instance, because those religions are part of the Capitalist monolith. By working against all the things that Marxism says they should, this gives them credibility with the world's proletariat, who will respond to that by leaving the press alone. Or so they think.

And violence by the world's proletariat is a good thing because it may presage the global Socialist revolution prophesied by the sainted Marx. That includes, in particular, all the violence in the world being committed by Muslims.

Like a lot of religious dogma, this is subconscious in a lot of the press. They simply accept that it's the way things are (or should be) and don't worry about where it came from or whether it really makes any sense.

The lethal attack on Charlie Hebdo, and the firebombing of a tabloid in Germany, has brought out a major contradiction in the Religion of the Press, and a lot of members of the press are demonstrating their confusion in how they respond.

First, there is the fundamental dogma of press freedom: no matter what the press says or does, no one is supposed to harm them in return. They're the referees, dammit, not players in the struggle!

Second, though, is the fact that Charlie and the Hamburg tabloid which was firebombed broke the compact by criticizing Islam. This was wrong! Not, surprisingly, because Muslim fanatics are dangerous (that is a good thing!), but because it is hoped that dangerous Muslim fanatics will fight against the Capitalist enemy which all good progressives are supposed to be working to undermine. Islam is a Third World religion, and criticizing it undermines the Press in trying to prove to the world Proletariat that the Press is on their side in the great Marxist struggle.

And as a result of this Progressive sin, Charlie Hebdo et. al. have dragged all the rest of the press into the battle, on the front line, where they no longer seem to have their assumed immunity.

And that's why a lot of them have a deer-in-the-headlights look on their collective faces. A common response has been, "We believe in absolute press freedom, but with freedom comes responsibility, and Charlie Hebdo and everyone else who published cartoons critical of Islam are abusing their responsibility and... deserved what happened to them." (That last isn't usually stated quite so bluntly, but you can see it if you read between the lines.)

They know how bad this sounds, but they can't really say anything else without violating the Press religious dogma themselves and further undermining their presumed alliance with the World's Proletariat.

How much of this is cowardice? I don't think they are really thinking in those terms. For one thing, the Press in the US thinks of itself as being brave, in part because of all the critical things they say about Christianity. There are all those "bitter clingers" out there with closets full of AR-15's just aching to shoot up the NYT and any other press outlet who dares say anything bad about Christianity (never mind that nothing like that has ever happened) and the Press bravely go ahead anyway. Likewise, they bravely risk being taken away by the Secret Police for criticizing the government when there's a Republican President (again, never mind that no one has ever been taken away like that). They're brave, damn it. They know they are! It's all very romantic and revolutionary.

No, the problem, and the reason a lot of them won't republish the Charlie cartoons, is that the Press isn't supposed to be doing that kind of thing. It isn't Progressive! It's the wrong damned target!

In a Preston Brooks way, yes. But as our Muzzie friends are showing daily, a soft word and violence works much better than just a soft word.

We had this conversation yesterday in the Mitt thread, where the consensus seemed to be that the next GOP candidate has to run aggressively against the press. I've always said any candidate needs a rapid-response war room so you can have at hand the most damaging personal information about an MFM talking head. If George Steffiewhatever gets on your case about the "war on women," wouldn't it be sweet to bring up his past restraining orders? Or if Candy Crowley asks you about abortion, wouldn't you want to be able to point to her history of sandblasting her uterus into sterility?

D-Lamp's major point was that the MFM, by telling you only what it wants you to know, is a clear and present danger to a civil society and means have to be taken to either force them to admit their partisanship or force them (by ridicule? Tar and feathers? Economic pressure?) to be neutral.

58 Yeah, I think cowardice accounts for most of the refusal to run the cartoons.

The acceptance of the Marxist dichotomy explains why pointing out that treating Muslims as less than fully capable human beings with their own agency and will is met with blank stares. It's not classist and racist and bigoted to think that the Muslims are only responding to outside pressures rather than acting from their own wants and desires. Of course not. That's not how the world works!

Not printing the cartoons? That's straight up don't kill me. Oh, it might not be conscious anywhere outside of Legal where it is a very conscious decision indeed.

But it's absolutely fear of being killed that is driving this.

69 Christians have been continually lampooned in disgusting ways by Charlie, so first of all fuck them. But those attacks drew guffaws, snark and applause from journalists because, true to their doctrine, Christians, while clearly upset, forgive and remain true to the teachings of Christ.

To journalists, that ultimately means it is safe to continue attacking Christians because the result is not threatening. Nobody is going to cut their heads off or murder them for their false, insulting, disgusting, demeaning attacks. No matter how it contributes to the hate and murders of Christians around the world, which by the way are happening in record numbers.

But "freedom of the press" and "the two are not connected" or something.

Free speech is certainly a right to be respected. But it should also be entrusted to people who truly value it- not weaponize it against people with whom they do not agree. And today's journalists do. Gratuitously.

I don't agree with the Islamist terrorists murdering the buffoons in France. But the blood of innocent victims like that police officer is on the hands of the people at Charlie. For years they have irresponsibly wielded their free speech like some five-year old who found his parents loaded gun.

75 Excellent post. Thanks SDB.

I believe these MFM types really see Judeo-Christian America as the "other", the reason we are held back from achieving great things. Those JC types hamper free thought and actions and love, and the MFM is darn well going to bring sunshine to their dark deeds. But they are inherently lazy, because they don't bother to truly find out the history, tenets and motivations of Islam. They believe with all their hearts that it must be good, because evil Republicans started a war with them. They have no comprehension of what takes place in Muslim communities/countries, because they don't want to be bothered with finding out the truth, much the way they live their entire lives. The truth would end up being far too painful.

They don't want to know about the Filipino women living on top of the Filipino Embassy in Riyadh, because they were raped and beaten by their Saudi employers, who hold their passports and won't let them leave the country. They don't want to know about the construction workers in these countries, who are only paid if they complete construction, but are switched from work site to work site, so that they never "complete" anything. They don't see a hundred Bangladeshi men living a one barrack meant for twenty, with only a bag of rice and three chickens as their food rations for a week.

That's a part of Muslim states nobody sees until they live in them, and even then, they quietly ignore it because to bring it up would incite the kind of violence we are seeing today.

I have little respect for the MFM and their apologists, needless to say.

79 The Press is shocked to learn Islam is and has always been a cult of conquest. This fact prompts denial and evasion and excuses galore.

The Press lives in a bubble.

The press made the damn bubble. They believe their own BS and that's why things are spinning out of control. Short a bizarre outbreak of sanity in their ranks, that's not changing, and it makes the odds of a course correction short cataclysmic events vanishingly slim.

The problem with our response to the press is the same as our response to most other prob entities. We insist on protecting and supporting them, while they continue to screw us over.

I have long said that the press in this country has always been highly partisan. They were much more so back in the early days of the country. The difference is that both sides were covered. Now all the press is uniformly in the back pocket of the socialist Democrats. I know of only one major newspaper that is not Democrat and that is the WaEx and they are in the pocket of the RNCe.

That's a platitudinous retort that people wield like it has some deeper meaning.

Nobody is stating you can not write or print it. What I am saying is that people should use that freedom responsibly and realize there is an impact to those expressions. This has not hit the press until now, when some of their buffoonish colleagues were murdered.

They don't care to make connections to the other impacts their writing or freakish cartoons have in the real world.

You don't think that some of the anti-Christian nonsense has an effect on those killing Christians around the world? You would be wrong to say no.

How about the effects of the media lying about Obama and all the Democrats do? People bitch about that all the time around here.

In brief: When the HQ first started up, someone (steve or maybe not steve) called ace an Ewok. The Horde ran with it. At that point, no one outside a very few people had met ace. Ace kept trying to get us to knock off the Ewok shit.

Then he won blog of the year and gave a very thoughtful speech. There was video.

The Horde laser focused not on the very thoughtful and insightful speech but the fact that ace looked rather Ewoky. And thus ace gave up.

The end.

Murdered? No, of course not.

More responsible and sensitive to the fact their writing has real-world impacts- yes.

So much tasteless, purposeless nonsense and propaganda is performed under the guise of "freedom of the press", which is not some ethereal phrase without real meaning and shape.

I see that abuse as a transgression that diminishes the real meaning- and today's journalists don't give a fig.

A lot of it is to garner attention or continue supporting an often baseless, fact-less point of view. It happens in the US every day on a regular basis by an irresponsible media.

158 Ladies and gentlemen and also members of the Horde, we're live.

The first Drift Compatible podcast featuring BCochran1981 and yours truly is up.

http://bit.ly/1DTXVsd

Click on the January 12, 2015 link to open the player.

Warnings: autoplay (I know, I know) and it's me so naturally there are the swears.

So if you've ever wanted to hear me say fucking RINOs, here's your chance.

*nudges Horde* Go. Listen. Enjoy.

159 Pardon the interruption while I attention whore for a minute, Horde.

AtC and I had been kicking around an idea for a while and we decided to go ahead with it.

So, over at marginallyhonorablechairman.wordpress.com you will find a link to the first ever podcast with AtC and I.

If you decide to give it a listen, first, thanks, and then a couple warnings: the podcast autoplays. Language. The recording software, for some reason, split the audio into L and R, so you'll need to listen via speakers or through both headphones.

End attention whoring.

Continue about your business.

Should it be protected, even if offensive? Sure.

Does that mean it serve a purpose and has some deeper meaning? No.

207 These propagandists are lying.

A blatant example today in all coverage of "Pegida" (Western Civ. loyalists) marches across Germany Monday eve. Growing turnout for Pegida and lots of photos of large Pegida marches.

But the headlines? "Counter protests dwarf German anti-Islamisation rallies" and "25,000 attend German anti-Islam march, but counter-protests bigger" Every headline a variation of "But...Counter Protests Bigger!!!"

Piqued, I searched for images of the massive counter-protests across Germany. There are none. Closest was a photo of small group holding flag and placard on which the letters "BUSH" were scrawled...

They're just making stuff up. Knowing their LIVs scan the headlines and 1st paragraph.

Before the 1960s and its explosion of formless and flaccid thought in our universities, the press had its apologists for and supporters of Marxism. But they were for the most part actively controlled by the Soviet UNion or its proxies, and they were aware of their own participation.

Today we have a large number of fellow travelers in the MSM who are being easily manipulated, but are too dumb to know it.

225
This is sort of related. From what I've seen of Charlie Hebdo cartoons they're mostly puerile and not that funny, but they shock.

And I commend the Prophet Ace (FBUH) for admitting that he didn't get it last night.

So, I like to mine the arcana of my childhood for things that will appeal to my children. They're big Patti Smith and Bowie fans now, for instance.

When I found a couple of my 70s era National Lampoons I thought, "great, I'm going to share these with the boys". Then I read them. Way more vile than I remember. Stuff I didn't actually want to show my boys.

OTOH, I also remember how absolutely thrilling it was as a 14 year old to find out that this sort of thing exists in the world. That it can happen. That the world is a place where poor taste does not have to mean forbidden.

So, I'm personally slotting Charlie Hebdo in the 70s National Lampoon slot and giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at January 13, 2015 09:58 AM (JtwS4)

226 "MSM has become part of this administration, part of the ruling class as seen w/all of the incestuous, familial relationships between the MSM and WH."

Nepotism is rife in the media and the non-related outsiders have to compete with the aristocrats for the few crumbs yet they all turn on the people (us) as one. They can all go to hell.

Posted by: Decaf at January 13, 2015 09:58 AM (ddNoU)

227 Secondly, it is impossible to defend the offices of Le Charlie Hebdo. There aren't enough police/military people available. If you surround Le Charlie Hebdo with an army, then some other office, some other target of opportunity is undefended.

Thirdly, if you defend all of the offices of all of the potential targets, then the attack simply takes place at some location other than the office; at home, for example, or on the family of the target rather than the target personally.

Forthrightly, the media is in a tizzy, because it was media people killed. It has been media people in in the middle east being beheaded. The media tries to ignore those battlefield beheadings because they thought if they stayed away from the battle, stayed off the battle field they would be save. Now it's personal. Now it's media people in their own offices and in their own homes, and in their own shopping malls, and in their own neighborhoods.

If all you play is defense, you lose whether it's basketball, soccer, football, tennis, war of propaganda, or bullets, bombs, tanks, missiles, and petrol bombs.

The Pen is not mightier than the AK47 when the person wielding the pen is unarmed, undefended, unaware, and delusional.

237 Thus it ever was, methinks. It's just that one side has withered, and its adherents have moved to blogs.

I work for a newspaper (paginator/copy editor -- used to be the other way around, dammit), and these days I just get so furious at the AP's bias in the political/government/world affairs spheres. I'd prefer not to run those stories, but I've got to fill the paper. God knows how furious I'd be if I ever watched network news.

Now, let's be fair -- there's still good reporting out there. It just seems to be mostly on local stories.

But even back in the "glory days" of WWII, there must have been some "we're the referees and above it all" attitude. Milton Caniff did a "Terry and the Pirates" sequence in which a magazine reporter was sneering at the troops -- until he was in a plane that the enemy attacked. He wound up taking a machine gun and realizing what the war was all about. He got kicked out of the theater for breaking the press agreement, but he left with pride.

I just don't see how Caniff could have dreamed up with that story unless that attitude was present in some reporters. They all couldn't have been Ernie Pyle.

I'm trying to get out of the business. And when I finally do (please God), I'll never again read another AP story that doesn't involve a breaking news event -- and possibly not all of those.

You are very wise. Too wise for us Internet cretins. We are blessed with your presence. I can only hope the others will heed your gracious words. Have mercy on us if we come up short of your standards. I can assure you, we type out our angry missives through veils of tears. We thought no one would notice, but you did.

241 My take is that suddenly the "other MFMC" realizes they are not immune from what they purport to be immune from #becausereporters. And therein lies the rub because that IS what they believed no matter that WE knew terrorism is just that and hiding in the name of a religion means nothing.

Just because you say you support this or that, and you are not really an action-oriented person, does not mean that if your ship goes down, you will be magically plucked to safety. I have always warned that just because you support the oppressed does not mean you are exempt from becoming so. Boom. The axes are falling, left, right and center.

This is THE BEST THING I have read yet on all of this.
OF COURSE our media are not neutral. And they are not cowards either - they really mean it when they say they won't run these Charlie Hebdo cartoons because they think the cartoons are offensive to their Muslim readers/viewers. They're not afriad of being killed, they are pretentious progressive assholes who are trying to be "sensitive" and "thoughtful" and "not be provocative for the sake of being provocative." How can they run these cartoons, and then two weeks from now denounce Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh for something "insensitive" they might have said about rape, or black criminals being shot by police, or whatever the Lefty cause celebre of the day is? They have to keep that Sensitivity Card in their pocket to use against conservatives they don't like.
Also they are in DEEP DENIAL about islam, both in the US and around the world. They are desperate to keep up this fiction that there is some vast universe of peaceful, moral, anti-capitalist muslims who are really really really wonderful people but do get upset when they see "blasphemy" of their "prophet." Their delicate sensitivities are Too Important to be Offended just for a Dumb Principle of "freedom of speech" that anyway is something dreamed up by the Patriarchy of dead white guys who founded the USA and the French Republic.

245 64 "32 CNNs Carol Costello just used "the prophet Mohammed" three times in her story"

I see the progs have a new line they will use endlessly to show their leftist credentials. They noticed how annoying this was to conservatives so they have doubled down on it. We'll be hearing this a lot more in the coming days.

246 And the Press believe Obama is a modern-day Martin Luther King, that he would walk to Selma, holding hands with the oppressed, and bring us all together to denounce our current-day oppressors.

And yet Obama, given the opportunity in Paris to do exactly that, watched football instead. The Obama America voted for, the Obama the Press hailed as the Lightbringer, the Obama he claimed to be, doesn't exist.

Who is Obama? If he's not doing what he's done for social justice, for human rights, what is he doing it for? For the money? For the power? For his own ego?

Posted by: Socratease at January 13, 2015 11:15 AM (2GbWn)

247 No doubt the MSM is in large part to blame for the current state.of things, but consider this: while US and European governments allow known terrorists to freely emigrate (eg. Tsarnaevs, Kouachis, Monis, etc., etc.) they de facto outlaw free speech. Why should any journalist reprint the cartoons when their own government is letting goodness knows how many murderous thugs run free?

250 Also keep in mind the general ignorance on the part of the left.

-- Islam means peace!

-- These extremists aren't really Muslims!

-- Everybody in the world just wants what I--good leftist that I am--want: pilates three times a week, wine club once a month, a Prius in the garage, "membership" with NPR, and a swanky downtown faux loft.

-- If you say that "the other" might actually want something different, then you're just being RACIST!!!

This is what makes al-Sisi's speech so important. He didn't say these people aren't really Muslims; he said that yes, they are reading the texts correctly, but Muslims need to find a way to move the religion beyond mindless textualism. He did what neither Obama nor Bush, nor any in the western mainstream media, ever did: recognized that the violence perpetuated in the Muslim world against anyone non-Muslim is rooted deep in the texts of Islam.

The media will never look at those texts honestly; they will never look at how they are interpreted by the majority of Muslims; they will never be honest even with themselves over what is in the Koran. They'd rather (pun intended) stick their fingers in their ears and hum.
