Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 13, 2015. On this day in 1910 the first public radio broadcast took place; a live performance of the opera Cavalleria rusticana was sent out over the airwaves from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, New York.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.
Today's story isn't about a who, but a what. Recognize this? AHHHYIIEEEEEEEEE!!!!! In the 1950s, this was one of the most famous screams in movieland. Appearing in nearly every Warner Brothers movie, it's known today as "The Wilhelm Scream," or, more simply, "Wilhelm." A sound designer named Ben Burtt heard the scream in the movies he watched growing up, and when he finally entered the business himself in the 1970s, he tried to track down the original recording. It took a lot of patience, but eventually he found it on an old reel marked "Man being eaten by an alligator." It turned out to have been recorded for the Warner western Distant Drums and was used twice in the movie: once in a battle with Indians and once again (as you might expect) when a man is eaten by an alligator. But why is it called a "Wilhelm?" Nobody could remember the name of the actor who created the scream, so Burtt jokingly named it after a character in 1953s Charge at Feather River, who screams the scream after he's nailed in the leg by an arrow. Burtt has worked on almost every George Lucas film, and makes sure to use the Wilhelm in any movie he is connected with, as a personal signature. For example, in Star Wars a stormtrooper screams a Wilhelm as he falls into the Death Star chasm that Luke and Leia swing across. In Return of the Jedi, when Luke slashes out with his lightsaber, knocking one of his enemies into the Sarlacc pit, the man screams a Wilhelm. But Burtt isn't the only designer using a Wilhelm. Others heard what he was doing and have used the scream themselves in movies such as Batman Returns, Toy Story, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings. And there you are. Hope you all have a wonderful day. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at January 13, 2015 06:41 AM (zF6Iw) 55

83 That seems the exact opposite to me. Paying to have a
crew come through once a year and do a quick trim seems cheaper and easier than sending trained employees out in the worst of weather to do dangerous repair work on the lines while they are down and people are out of power. I guess I'm crazy. Posted by: Ricardo Kill at January 13, 2015 06:58 AM (BrdtK) Trimming ALL trees along ALL power lines is very expensive. During snows and ice storms there are usually not that many downed lines, and most all of those are the 7KV lines in residential areas and towns that like tree lined streets. And they don't send them out until the weather clears up to some extent. Posted by: Vic at January 13, 2015 07:01 AM (wlDny) 90

Once again I did NOT watch the semi-pro football national title game.
For years I have been critical of the game at that level, and this year I tried to pay attention. Sorry, I find the game boring, and part of it is that there are too many extremes. One team, or even one aspect of one teams can so dominate the other that the end result is all but inevitable. Granted, I get that people were not expecting Ohio State to win it all, based on rankings and all that nonsense, so if you like underdogs, congratulations. Me, I generally despise underdogs. When underdogs win, it means somebody who didn't deserve it got a lucky break, or was handed something they didn't earn. Which is a lot like our commie leftists want it. Screw that. I want to see competence and hard work prevail. Which means, turning our attention away from the semi-pros to the overpaids, I'm rooting for the Seasquawks to be crushed this weekend, just so we can stop hearing how wonderful Russell Wilson is. He's not. He's black, and he's won a Super Bowl. Which is why they are trying to foist him up like the third coming (oh, as you recall, the second coming is currently occupying the White House). Screw that too, I say. Posted by: BurtTC at January 13, 2015 08:01 AM (Dj0WE) Posted by: Ricardo Kill at January 13, 2015 08:01 AM (BrdtK) 197

Influential Democrats communists with a "D" after their name are pushing a new plan to give middle-class Americans a big tax break, but only by imposing a new tax on Wall Street traders and other top earners drawing a rebuke from majority Republicans who say the proposal would hurt the economy. I would say this is a pure political play to "embarrass" Republicans and appease their base when it is shot it down if it even makes it to the floor. But like all Democrat tax plans middle class would be down ranked to be people making less than 20,000 a year including unemployed and rich would be anyone making over 50K a year. http://tinyurl.com/oxj2ger Posted by: Vic at January 13, 2015 06:27 AM (wlDny)" Back when Mario Cuomo was Governor of New York, the state imposed a tax on Wall Street back room transactions. They collected that tax from the day it went into effect until the next weekend when all Wall Street backroom operations were moved to other states, primarily Connecticut. New York quickly repealed the tax but those operations and thos jobs were gone from New York forever. The resurgence of London as a financial center has come at the expense of New York as US regulations have gotten more onerous. I read a story where one worker in the London financial industry proposed that a statue be erected in London to honor Sarbanes and Oxley. My expectation is that if Obama succeeds in this scheme, it will mean happier days in London's financial district. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at January 13, 2015 08:17 AM (PD6iL) 234

To be honest, kid was still getting her act together in terms of studying consistently during sophomore year. She's unlucky to be in that level where you can be a slacker and still fake your way through an A for most classes, but luckily she got a history teacher in who was tough and kicked her out the first day of AP History for not having her summer work ready. That had more impact on her than years of my nagging. So I don't know if she had the maturity to work for a high PSAT score anyway specially given that our state has a pretty high cut off (competing with kids from expensive private prep schools) Posted by: @votermom at January 13, 2015 08:48 AM (cbfNE) 268

At the very least some Texans should fire up a few pig roasts in the

I've never seen Dunham's show "Girls", but as I understand it, she spends most of the time on the show in various states of undress. Why would she care if someone leaked "topless" photos of her other than to be an attention whore? Also, what cartoon did the 2000 dead Nigerians draw in order to piss off Loco Haram? While the mass march in Paris is a nice gesture, it was all about Charlie Hebdo, NOT about the Jews who are slaughtered in France all too frequently with nary a peep. Read Pam Geller's essay on this at Breitbart. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at January 13, 2015 06:41 AM (CMkNk)" As a strategic matter I think it is a mistake to emphasize the slaughter of Jews rather than the threat to everybody's freedom. I think that a similar mistake was made years ago in emphasizing the 6 million Jews killed by Nazis while largely ignoring the 6 million gentiles who were also killed by Hitler's minions. Yes, indeed, the Jihadis like the Nazis before them have a special hard on for Jews. The thing is that Jews alone cannot defeat these enemies. Jews need allies and an important way to find allies is to let people who are also targeted know that they have a mutual enemy. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at January 13, 2015 09:09 AM (PD6iL) 280
Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 13, 2015. On this day in 1910 the first public radio broadcast took place; a live performance of the opera Cavalleria rusticana was sent out over the airwaves from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, New York.
--------------------- I am reported to be "pessimistic" about broadcasting. The truth is I have anticipated its complete disappearance, confident that the unfortunate people, who must now subdue themselves to "listening-in," will soon find a better pastime for their leisure. - H. G. Wells (1866-1946) (The Way the World Is Going (1929) Opera, next to Gothic architecture, is one of the strangest inventions of Western man. It could not have been foreseen by any logical process. - Kenneth, Lord Clark (1903-1983) (Civilisation, Ch. 9) Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 13, 2015 09:14 AM (eeTCA) 281
