Early Morning Thread, 1/11/15 - May I borrow a cactus? [krakatoa]

I way overslept yesterday, so yesterday's thread today, and today's thread I'll gladly give to you next Tuesday.

Anyone else feeling super damned psyched that the big takeaway from this week is to be appropriately deferential to a ... ok, It's Ace's blog, and I'm not going to say what I really want to say... to Muslims (despite what Howard Dean might believe)?

I'd say I hope your week has been better, but you've been watching the same craptastic display of depraved 7th century barbarism Islamic outreach, followed by the inevitable cowardice of a 21st century hedonistic, post-modern, self-referential "elite" that the majority of 6/7th of the world thinks of as proper civilized restraint.

The remaining seventh of the world's population sees no reason to stop the rest of us from running throat first into the knives of their most fervent proselytizers.

So, about that cactus...

But this will never happen because all money is fungible. A raise in the gas tax will not result in a raise in the road maintenance. It will be pissed away on social programs just like all the money is doing now. Social program equals votes.

Raising the federal gas tax is a remarkably stupid idea. However, the fact that oil is cheap does present an opportunity to impose a tariff on imported oil which would help protect US oil producers from the current Saudi effort to drive them out of business by driving down the price of oil. I would exempt Canada and Mexico from the imported oil tax which would minimize the effect on Americans since that is where we import most of our oil from. In order to improve support for the oil import tax, I would earmark the revenues collected to pay for the expenses local governments incur paying for the citizens of other NAFTA countries within the United States, in other words help finance the cost of Mexican citizens using emergency rooms, schools, prisons and welfare.

This would have the additional effect of making oil even cheaper outside of the United States, Mexico and Canada so it would tighten the screws on Russia, Venezuela and Iran.

This reminds me of New York State's Off Track Betting operation. Every year they barely break even running a legal gambling operation. This is something that has been the Mafia's bread and butter for more than a hundred years. OTB is notorious for being a parking place for idiot sons in law of politicians and other political cronies. The important thing is that it does not lose money. My personal feeling is that we should encourage other political operations like that which do not lose money but which provide a place for politicians to place their otherwise unemployable cronies. If I were to be put in charge for a while, I would set up a similar government operation to sell heroin and crack cocaine.

The thing is that you need somebody with minimal competence running things because the key is that while it is not profitable (if it is making money, that means you can hire more politically connected idiots), it does not cost anything to the taxpayers.

Do they still make flying saucers? Sled can be steered by torquing the runners with your hands if you are lying on your belly or your feet if you are sitting down. Toboggans can be controlled to a limited extent by leaning to one side or the other. Flying saucers, a convex disk of aluminum with handles, on the other hand, cannot be controlled at all because any random bump turns you around so that from one second to the next you might be facing where you are going, looking backwards or any other orientation in between. To make up for this lack of control they go remarkably fast once they get going. Lots of fun as a kid to go screaming down a hill, past where all the sleds had stopped and then out into traffic.

I believe that Venezuelan high sulfur sludge is processed mainly in Aruba where the environmental laws are not particularly stringent and a prevailing wind blows most of the toxic gases from the process out to sea. I am told that the areas downwind of the Aruba refineries are marked on nautical navigation maps because it can be worth your life if you spend any time there.

I had some nasty gas stove grates to clean, and saw this a year or so ago...

http://www.pinchingyourpennies.com/i-saw-it-i-tried-it-cleaning-the-grates-on-your-gas-stove/

So I did this overnight (from 3pm yesterday until this morning), and it's a miracle cleaner. I just finished wiping off the grates - you simply need something abrasive, but you really do not need to push down hard, just remove the particles that are already softened up.

Wow. Wiped clean, sparkly.

The other miracle cleaning tip I use often is pouring Cascade dishwasher powder into my stainless steel coffee carafe, with BOILING water (not hot, boiling), and leave it overnight, or hours if I don't have that much time, and voila! sparkling clean without having to do anything. Works for any Stainless Steel thermos type containers.

It really seems like there's a terrorist attack grieving process that in the end amounts to so much fart gas.

1. Terrorist attack killing enough that it can't be written off as some crazed lone wolf running someone down with a car or something.

2. Flowers, teddy bears, notes left at the scene.

3. A unity rally of some sort that's not really meant to truly unite against a known enemy, but mostly make those who won't fight feel good about themselves - while speakers won't even bother to mention the name of the "religion" that's the cause for the attack.

4. Go back to business as usual. Condemn those right wing haters as racists. Continue to offer respect to those who would kill you. Deny, deny, deny.

5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 as needed until such a time that you can no longer gather and express yourself because you are now under sharia law.

Dallas area high school football teams are just like the Democrats in an election. You know how elections look fair but the Democrats are cheating every way possible? Well, the state championship games look like football to the people in the stands who aren't watching through binoculars and can't see what is really going on out there on the field.

273 A plural possessive almost always contains modifiers. The confusion is when you get into terms like "herd".

Is a "herd" a singular noun or a plural?

Following "herd", what is the proper usage of pluralization?

"The herd's stampede was immediate."

"The herds' stampede was immediate".

"The whole bunch of cows, what fucking run a lot real fast? They done it real fast."

-I prefer the third because I don't know the answer.

"Trio" is always fun. "The trio is" vs. "The trio are." I lean toward thinking that if you're bundling three into one, they become a singular entity, and should be treated as such.

I remember spending a whole shift on the sports desk arguing about it. That was when newspapers had copy editors, and dinosaurs ruled the earth.

The fact a herd contains more than one thing is irrelevant.

293 In America, a sports announcer will say, "The crowd is going wild." In England they say, "The crowd are going wild."

I don't know which one is technically correct. Americans treat the crowd as a thing, while the Brits treat it as a group of people.

297 "Crowd" is a singular in the American lexicon.

"eman" spelled that out in post #287.

Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at January 11, 2015 10:15 AM (16bOT)

298 It seems once you've implied the plural with something like "crowd" you would be treating them as a singular entity. Once that's done you apply the rules of a singular entity in addressing them.

The crowd(as a singular entity) "is" restless as opposed to the crowed "are" restless.
