What is less obvious to me is why liberals aren't more inclined to defend the right of people to be critical of all religions. Why aren't they more interested in why Islamic ideas so often manifest in violence? Why do the practitioners of these ideas find themselves in clashes with every culture they touch (Jews, Hindus, Christians, and all others)? Seems like a tolerant liberal would be phobic about the stoning of gays or the institutionalized dehumanization of women that's rampant in "moderate" Muslim nations - forget radical Islam. Students are dangled easy credit terms, with no interest and no principal due before graduation. Parents often co-sign these huge loans. Sometimes the signers aren't even shown a basic amortization schedule (as required for, say, a home mortage loan).
Title IV rules require any monies in excess of tuition + college costs to be given directly to the student within 3 business days. Colleges encourage over-applying and the kids think it's free money and blow it all.
College loans are a bigger and more lucrative loan-shark racket than anything Tony Soprano could dream up.

Took out a $5k student loan to go to truck driving school (as suggested by Goose in Top Gun).
First tip, don't let your children grow up to be truck drivers.
After getting through the commercial truck driving school, I found out you can go to community college and get the same stuff for $200 bucks. (Times change, it was thirty years ago, prices might be higher)
The community colleges who did that stuff had an arrangement with big trucking companies. You went to that school, you went to that trucking company. After two or three years, you go find your own job, but it would still be a truck driving job. See tip #1.
It was a bitch paying back that 5K even though I lived in the truck and only rented a mail box. See tip #1.

He named the body of water to the west of the city as the Pacific Ocean. It's not; it's Georgia Strait, which bears the same relationship to the Pacific Ocean as does San Francisco Bay, an inland body of water connected to the ocean. Offhand, I figure it would 3-4 hours on a fast ship to get from Vancouver Harbor to the open ocean.

This country is not gone. Not by a long shot. Tonight I'm sitting having a late dinner after 13 hours of work as a reservist for one of our Armed Forces (it doesn't matter which one). We have deployment orders coming later this year (it doesn't matter where). What is important is that every man and woman under my command loves the Republic, knows the importance of duty, and has family and friends that support each of them. As reservists, we get shit upon monthly with a variety of taskings that we have to do for free and live under the ever present threat of reductions in force while trying to maintain the highest levels of readiness and keep our civilian employers content. Every month is a challenge and not one of us would have it any other way. We give a shit when we see our flag, when we are doing our jobs and when we have to sacrifice to protect freedom.
Does anyone think I would rather be where I am right now than with my wife and 5 month old? Negative, Ghost Rider, that pattern is full. But I'm here anyway because I took an oath to defend this nation and by God that is what is going to happen.

That's quite predictable. If you are placer mining, and you have a small wash plant, it's easy to mine ahead of what you wash, which gives you time to pick the best ground, and test it by panning as you go, so you don't waste time putting non-paying ground through the plant. So you get a bigger plant, and now you have to scramble to keep material going through it, so you wind up washing some barren gravel because it becomes harder to maintain the quality of your feed as throughput increases.

Moved to Henderson two years ago, from the high Rockies of Colorado. worried abou the heat, but it hasn't been un bearable thanks to omnipresent air-conditioning. Two or three days a winter with sprinkler water freezing on the sidewalks (fell on my ass in oafish surprise that first winter).

Husband posted a pic of the bottle on his Facebook page, asking, "Did anyone we know gift us this tequila?" No one has responded. Honestly, I think the previous owners left the box in the far back corner of the lower wet bar cabinet. They were complete douchebags, so good. They left the house filthy, carpets stained, and me in tears. They were still "occupying" the house the day of the closing, so we didn't see the horrible condition of the house until the day before our movers arrived. And they were wealthy old shits.

2014 attendance....Pittsburgh, Arizona, Chicago, Cincinatti, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Oakland and Minnesota all had lower home numbers.
They fucked up because they had no choice. They built a stadium that was way the fuck too big for the area. But they couldn't do anything else, it was the only way to keep the FL/GA game.

I have no idea. They were supposed to be out the day of the closing. We were staying in a hotel (with two sick cats). The morning of the closing, we were to do the walk-through, and the arrogant old assholes were "put out" that we were on time at 9:00 a.m. Every room of the house was full of furniture and carpets.
We went on to close (in the very office that a major scene in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was shot in), and trusted that the old bastards would be out.
They treated us like crap. The house was a hot mess. I've never, ever, left a house without making sure it was spotless for the new owners. I've vacuumed and mopped, and those were the last two items loaded on the moving vans.
The old bastard is dead now, and his miserable widow we still see occasionally.

When my younger brother and his wife bought their starter home it was a house sold to them by a woman who was a 2 pack a day smoker for decades and apparently never opened the windows. They had actually thought the living room walls were painted yellow - but that was 25 years of tar and nicotine. Devil's Cut is the bourbon that soaks into the barrel. The wood is injected with water right after the barrels have been drained of the "normal" bourbon. It's not really known how exactly they extract the bourbon. It's a "proprietary process".

Shouldn't take a lot of volume of steam. Just keep the heat and pressure high enough, and it'll drive right through the wood to the vacuum side, taking everything in there with it. Shouldn't dilute it much at all, and there's no way they'd sell it at barrel concentration, anyway.
And if it is truly concentrated, then one single barrel's extract would be enough to flavor several other "straight" barrels of Beam. Cheap to do, and fun to sell for the premium.
Don't know if that's how they do it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

You can make your own sauce & meatballs in less than an hour.
Sauté garlic in olive oil, watch closely that it turns translucent only. Then throw Tomato purée or canned chopped plum tomatoes or both, a bit of sugar, balsamic vinegar & basil. I hate unions & won't eat them. I love basil but others like oregano or parsley.
Let it simmer while you make meatballs.
Marcella Hazan wrote three best cookbooks IMHO & I pull them out of bookshelf if I want to cook something Italian.

He was always aggressively political in his print reviews, going back to the 80s or earlier. He was smart enough to tone it down on TV, at least until Siskel passed away. I suspect that Siskel kept telling him to knock it off.
Knew his shit when it came to movies though. Wrote some excellent essays on film in general, and did a hilarious one on movie tropes that became a classic.

Or the Bargello ("we have more great art in our jail than you have in your three largest cities")? Although the Uffizi is the cream of the crop -- its name in Italian means "Offices"....slightly different from today's cube farms.
And the food -- the fiancee and I have fun with the concept of composing our own myths. One of mine is that the only cuisine native to earth is gruel and Kaboom! cereal. All of the other styles of cooking were extraterrestrial, brought to earth by meteorites. The richest of these fell in Tuscany, spreading waves of deliciousness across the continent of Europe....though, sadly, mostly thwarted by the English Channel.

Anyway, I've ordered a single bottle from Ludwigs, which currently has it for $140, and they shipped it to me with no fuss. If they're losing money that way, they didn't try to make it up on my order, so I don't see any reason to be concerned about it.

shredded, MH - actually, you might be amazed at who I don't know in pop culture. In fact, *I* am amazed. Used to be low-end "normal" on that stuff - not a music guy, familiar with the biggest movie types, actually moved off TV starting in the 90s.
Now? In some comment threads or posts, allusions to pop culture figures or memes will elude me more than half the time. So yes, figuratively I *do* live under a rock (I joke all the time that I live in a cave). Part of it is amost no TV and almost no movies (longish story on both).
Then again, just a few hours back, we had a thread where I have extensive and personal direct knowledge of the people under discussion (Amanpour and her husband). I go out to the garage to set up the press to reload 9mm tomorrow morning, and on the radio network newsbreak I hear a former high intel official commenting on the French festivities (a few years back the putz forgot to reserve a table at the executive dining room at CIA when we had lunch, so we had to slum it downstairs with the galley slaves).
So I couldn't pick 90% of today's hottest pop figures out of a line-up, but some times it's amazing how many people in the "news" I know or knew personally.

The department is much larger, and this area seems to be more attuned to "humor".
FWIW, take a couple of the Accounting and Business Law courses if you really want to get into business. They will give you an idea about the complexities of payroll, finance and law, but you will need considerably more to really set up a business.
Alternatively, you could just do it, as I did.

Ace is a much, much better movie reveiwer than that hack. She didn't understand movies... what makes them work, or not etc. For her it was just regurgitated shit about tracking dollies and how "it speaks to the human condition" and shit. You don't have to be particularly techincally informed to do it, it's more important to... understand film and what makes a story or sequence entertaining and effective in an objective manner. Just because some director employs deep focus and you know the in's and out's of the technique, doesn't make it better than some self taught novice's wham-bam simple flick that kick's ass because he knows how to entertain you.

Double huh. Hidden stories aside, might have to check it out. The "smelly and filthy" reputation is part of what has made me reluctant to visit Venice. And I've had good luck visiting another under-the-radar Italian town, Parma. Went there only because I had heard of the cheese and the ham, and was very glad I went.

Our "across the back fence" neighbor for over a decade was from Dubrovnik -- but came over decades ago (maybe the 50s?). He and his brothers have a house there -- they built it to CA building code. Even in her heyday, everyone regarded Kael as ridiculously subjective about her tastes. She automatically loved anything that Brian DePalma did, for instance, yet thought filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and John Milius were actually *dangerous.*
She basically started her career reviewing movies by sabotaging Bosley Crowther's career doing the exact same thing, all because Crowther didn't enjoy or "get" Bonnie & Clyde in 1967. It's fine to disagree, but she basically used her influence to get him thrown out on a rail at NYT, even though Crowther, as old as he was, was one of the very first professional film critics from the 1920s onward and practically invented the genre. Just a nasty piece of work Kael was.

For me, it's Key West. Nothing to do but lounge in the pool Biden style and drink. You can walk or bike everywhere. Amazing food, better drinks, plus the quirky down island locals that are awesome single serving friends.

I posted recently that Grampian Chi (I was named after his father) started me on the stamps & coins. He had penpals from all over, and used to send me stamps from every corner of the world.
I got to the point of spending my lawnmower money at the stamp/coin shop. Eventually, mostly Japanese stuff.
I have a lot of mint stuff from Olympics (40's, 50's?), plate blocks, a lot of beautiful art on those old Japanese stamps.

Dive Bikini (Saratoga's upright, flight deck at about 120' or so - but no penetration - uh, she's stuffed to the gills with ordnance and fuel, etc.
Dive the reefs east of Papua New Guinea on a live-aboard. Reportedly pristine and unbelievable.
Winter sports (and eating) on Hokkaido.
Nordic skiing and hockey - but not eating, well not so much - in northern Norway.
Residential cooking school in Oaxaca, or Jalisco, Mexico. Two weeks.
Skiing and wine-tasting from both sides of the Andes, Chile and Argentina.
Normandy. Not mostly for the apple brandy, but that too.
Alentejo in Portugal, and Porto (quiet, delicious).
All these are places I haven't been.

I would love to see a constitutional amendment that would make Federal interference with food, education, healthcare, or intrastate commerce a capital crime, and would subject those who legislate or enforce laws to triple penalties if they violate them -- with every citizen able to go to court to enforce.

New Zealand, esp. South Island. Oh yes. Spectacular. Glacier hiking. Swimming with dolphins. Hot springs. Diving through fresh water into salt water (Milford). Boogie boarding class-4 whitewater rivers. Backpacking with 75-degrees in the morning, snow at lunch. North Island too - blackwater rafting.
Japan. Everywhere I've been is good. Can't go wrong. Get up in the mountains, down in the small towns on the islands in Hiroshima prefecture, and Kagoshima/southern Kyushu (and don't miss the kamikaze museum there).

Funny thing, when my family sold the farm there was an old coffee jar in the auction filled w/ some my old matches from college and after, 1970s.
IIRC it sold for $35. Now around here the coffee jar is more common than elsewhere, a lot of the value had to be they wanted the matches. There's a lot of history of a community in an old collection of matches.

Would go back to S Africa in heartbeat in their spring which was January to see the lovely young baby critters and enjoy (mostly) the weather.
Our next vacation on the bucket list is Australia, and visit friends there in Western Australia, and see the Great Barrier Reef on the other side.
If I had a lot of $$$, would also check out New Zealand, as I have heard that is beautiful.

I hope I can make it that long. SpaceX's Falcon 9 is scheduled for liftoff at 4:47 am EST. The primary mission is a resupply flight to the ISS, but what really makes this launch interesting is that they will try to land the first stage on a floating platform. Nobody has ever attempted that before.

I was a regular at LGF from about 2003-2004 until I left in 2007. I didn't get banned and I didn't "flounce"; I just walked away without saying a word. He was already starting to ban people who disagreed with him and I finally had enough. I never even look at the site nowadays.
A couple of years later, some website run by an ex-LGF'er posted a list of banned accounts. My name was on it. I was banned posthumously, probably because he saw that I was posting at another site started by bannees.
So yes, your LGF account is almost certainly banned.

The entire Iberian peninsula is full of Moorish victories and defeats. I'm not a huge expert on the history -- but the architecture seems wonkier than the usual Spanish/colonial -- as I had said, it's half-Atlantean.

Guided by the chief archeologist, who of course was an Assyrian named George (this was, apparently, a requirement to be an Iraqi archeologist then, as they all seemed to fit this description).
On the way back from Bablyon, we mau-mau'd our hosts to stop in Karbala - they were Sunni, it was Friday, and national unity vs. Iran or not, these guys were almost sweating they were so nervous about visiting a Shi'a holy city on a Friday (but being typical beaten-down denizens of a totalitarian country, were actually more scared of disappointing their VIP guests and "getting in trouble" - so we got our wish). Outcome: folks in Karbala were stunned and delighted to have Americans (!!) visiting, and we practically had to be pried out of the cafes where they were plying us with dates, teas, and smiles. Our Iraqi hosts actually were tourists in their own country that day ...

NASA TV was just showing SpaceX launch control at the Cape. It's weird that the SpaceX webcast has never shown it, as far as I know.

Back in the 1960s, each flight built on the experience of the previous flight. They kept pushing the envelope, with longer duration missions, spacewalks, new spacecraft, etc. It was absolutely thrilling to have been able to watch those launches.
With modern mature launch systems, a successful flight is the desired goal. Whether the Shuttle, Russia's Soyuz, or various satellite launchers around the world, it's always "Was the launch successful? Good."
The Falcon 9 is is still a young launch system with teething pains. I don't remember the numbers, but historically there has been a high probability of failure in the first 5 flights of a new rocket design. It's had 13 successful launches in a row, which is excellent.
SpaceX alone keeps trying new things. After a few successful flights, they added landing legs and practiced setting the booster down on the ocean's surface. This flight adds grid fins for control at hypersonic speeds, and landing the first stage on a floating platform.
They're like, "OK, that worked. Now let's try this." For me, this really brings back the excitement and anxiety of the Golden Age of the 1960s.

it was a keys player kinda yelling the chords out on the fly. of course, they never mention all of them, just the handful they remember before they start. keys players tend to play a lot more chords in each song than guitar players, so that can be a lot to catch on the fly. also, keys players are always inverting the damn chords so the tonic is only seldom the bass note in the chord. for me, that is much tougher to hear right the first time.

Drums and lead vocals on Born to be Wild (in the key of Kay) and drums on Inspiration, which isn't "hard" but is Zep.
Some given talent, I guess, but we couldn't afford lessons.
Between that and getting bored within 20 minutes just playing drums and no one else there leads to no fancy, machine gun stick work. Only way I sound like I'm "going off" is using double kick.
My strength is behind a singer/songwriter. 5 piece kit with some bongos, chimes and other percussion stuff. Don't overplay. Just add some "layers".
Easy harp parts while I'm doing that for another layer.
Grab the Taylor for an easy rhythm part while doing kick and hi-hat. That's about as far as I can take it.
The cool part?
I get to hang out with real musicians.

I hear that. I rarely play alone and then it's usually just to learn songs. All the real experimenting comes with band rehearsal. Can only work up enough enthusiasm by myself to go through numbers and exercise my hands. As for drumming, don't sweat it too much... most of the best drummers I found were strong on the fundamentals and weren't flashy. You should practice more alone though, if I was a drummer I'd work harder. It would be more of a buzz playing alone with records etc than anything else. It's a natural fit.

And at real close to 60 yoa...
But I have fun and I'm back to playing with two very fine musicians, one of whom is one of my all time favorite songwriters.

The West Coast unions keep doing this stuff. There is a Mexican port at Topolobampo, near Los Mochis in the Sea of Cortez, that has a lot of spare capacity to load and unload shipping containers and it has a rail connection that goes directly into Texas. The Topolobampo site also has the RFID readers and communication infrastructure so that shipping containers can be tracked all the way through the port.
At some point, somebody is going to start using Topolobampo during one of these West Coast labor union events and they are going to keep using it after the event is over.

There are still people in private sector unions and in many cases, they make significantly more money than they would if their jobs were subject to free competition. That tends to engender loyalty among union members. However, the lockstep association with the Democratic Party means that union members are regularly urged to vote for politicians who are serving other parts of the Democratic political coalition such as the environmental fanatics, the gays and the America hating lunatic left.
When I used to ring doorbells for politicians, I often heard union members say that they were genuinely torn because they felt loyalty to their union but the Democrats were attacking their religion.
If Rick Perry makes it easier for union members to vote Republican, that is a good thing. White Anglos are only 62% of the American public any more. Blacks are a write off. The Hispanic vote ranges from majority Democrat to overwhelming majority Democrat. Among white voters, Jews vote overwhelmingly Democrat, single women vote overwhelmingly Democrat and government workers vote overwhelmingly Democrat. It makes sense to not write off a segment of voters that could make the difference.

Because their motivating impulse, in all things, is envy. It's seen in politics and economics more openly, but it's there in religion too. For example, much of the hate towards Israel is, expressly admitted when you push the point, because they despise the Jews for claiming to be the chosen people. You think you're better than me?!?. Likewise with Christianity, they are furious to be accused of being hell-bound for their sins. How dare you say my sexual exploration is sinful!
They simply can't bear to criticize Islam because that would make Judaism and Christianity look good by comparison. And to acknowledge real evil would expose their anti-Christian venom as fickle and petty.
