New Yorker Magazine Half-Wakes-Up From Deep Obama Slumber to Threat of Weaponized Religion
A weaponized religious cult, I should say.
Obama has been telling the country that there is no terrorism and no threat from Islamism for six years. The country has largely chosen to believe this unbelievable horseshit because this country is no longer a great one, but rather a cowardly, lazy, and trivial one. Also, an increasingly stupid one. Say, hasn't television gotten crazy-good lately??!! It is MOAR FUN!!! to live in Obama's world of cuddly-stupid lies than the rough and gritty real world. But maybe some people are having troubling dreams about a thing they once knew as "the real world," which might cause them to actually wake up to it.
The murders today in Paris are not a result of France's failure to assimilate two generations of Muslim immigrants from its former colonies. They're not about French military action against the Islamic State in the Middle East, or the American invasion of Iraq before that. They're not part of some general wave of nihilistic violence in the economically depressed, socially atomized, morally hollow West--the Paris version of Newtown or Oslo. Least of all should they be "understood" as reactions to disrespect for religion on the part of irresponsible cartoonists. They are only the latest blows delivered by an ideology that has sought to achieve power through terror for decades. It's the same ideology that sent Salman Rushdie into hiding for a decade under a death sentence for writing a novel, then killed his Japanese translator and tried to kill his Italian translator and Norwegian publisher. The ideology that murdered three thousand people in the U.S. on September 11, 2001. The one that butchered Theo van Gogh in the streets of Amsterdam, in 2004, for making a film. The one that has brought mass rape and slaughter to the cities and deserts of Syria and Iraq. That massacred a hundred and thirty-two children and thirteen adults in a school in Peshawar last month. That regularly kills so many Nigerians, especially young ones, that hardly anyone pays attention. Because the ideology is the product of a major world religion, a lot of painstaking pretzel logic goes into trying to explain what the violence does, or does'’t, have to do with Islam. Some well-meaning people tiptoe around the Islamic connection, claiming that the carnage has nothing to do with faith, or that Islam is a religion of peace, or that, at most, the violence represents a "distortion" of a great religion.... A religion is not just a set of texts but the living beliefs and practices of its adherents. Islam today includes a substantial minority of believers who countenance, if they don't actually carry out, a degree of violence in the application of their convictions that is currently unique.

What's clear, for now, is that U.S. policy will continue to involve giving the Iraqi government the help it requests, even if some of that assistance ends up aiding militias that in the past have battled U.S. soldiers and committed atrocities against Iraq's Sunni population. That said, I never got the idea that W was trying to pretend that Mohammedan violence was *not* because of Mohammedism, but was trying to "appeal to their better natures."

You can tell height by step distance. You can also see when someone's tired or carrying a full load.

I suspect he wanted to keep as many Muslim countries as possible onside for dealing with al Qaeda, since we'd need their logistical as well as moral support. Or, to put it another way, there was no point in generating more overt enemies than necessary; intemperate language about Islam could have turned the whole thing into a holy war.

The problem is that those who run our Government do not understand that Islam is not 'only' a religion.
Its a boilerplate for Government... it has Laws and Court systems.
And it preaches that those laws and court systems supersede whatever secular laws you happen to live under.

Honestly, I don't think we'd even need to kill 1/10 of them. If we'd make it clear (yes, through force- yes, by killing a whole lot of them) that their more violent tendencies will not be tolerated, most of them will stop.
And, yes, I *am* talking about fire-bombing villages where terrorists hang out, because part of the lesson needs to be "hiding them is helping them, and helping them makes you culpable for their acts."
Our strength was highest in Iraq and Afghanistan when the tribal leaders believed we were going to be there and kill anyone who got in our way- they decided they didn't want to be the ones dying, and started handing terrorists and insurgents over almost gift-wrapped.

So, true story. Gym opened in my town and went the other day. Their tv options include 9 sports channels, 8 news channels, like one local channel, Bravo (so constant reality shows) and the history channel.
History channel is also usually reality these days, but last time I went it was some show, seemingly about the arc of the covenent. Awesome, I think.
Oh no, apparently the arc was a nuclear reactor, and radiation was occasionally killing the priests, which is why they had to be tied to a string and pulled out. You learn something new every day, on the history channel! *eyeroll*

Actually, I know a lot of them. They are quite smart in most things, but this-IMO- appears to be a blind spot for them. It's a source of disagreement between us, but about as meaningful as the "angels on the head of a pin" argument.

That said, I do believe that he and Al Sharpton should probably be in jail.
And that "right sized" war is getting a whole lot of very good men and women killed or maimed. Whereas if we'd just go in and Lay Down the Law (as it were), we'd end up losing a whole lot fewer young men and women.
There's a humanitarian side to that, too. Remember that we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki mostly to save American lives, but that it *also* saved Japanese lives. The lesson is clear- be so fearful and powerful that they know they can't win, and they'll stop fighting. Them stopping fighting sooner means fewer people die.

I've known quite a few. And their argument, taken from a faith perspective, is not *wrong.* God certainly could have made the world to seem millions of years old (but was it millions of years old... yesterday?) for reasons no human could fathom.
But the argument is pointless because a) I don't have to know how hold the world is, nor really know anything about Hebrew history to be a Christian (most Gentiles in the 1st C certainly didn't) and b) we'll never know for sure.

I swear, her knees buckled a bit and she literally looked like she was going to wet her pants in fear at the thought of telling her father she had a burned out brake light on her car. I asked her what was wrong, and she says "T-tell my father? He will be very angry at me". Why?, I asked. "It's not your fault, sweetie. This is what light bulbs do after a few thousand hours of use. It's normal". She muttered "He will not understand".
This kid was so overwhelmed with fear of her Islamocommie daddy that I got back into my world famous, wheelie turning Corvette, zipped off to the parts house and got a replacement bulb and installed it for her. And she still didn't seem to know whether to shit or go blind over me doing that. But at least she didn't have to tell Daddy about it.
There are other examples I can think of, involving other Muzzie women I've met, but the story is the same. Anything comes up involving their husband/father/brother/uncle/whatever, the fear just oozes out of them. It is downright spooky, let me tell you...

I would note that different sects and movements of muslims seem to radicalize at different rates.We don't need to treat all muslims as equally suspect. Just weed out those that are problemmatic. And by "weed" I don't mean kill, but actively oppose on every possible level. Individuals practicing faiths with high levels of radicalism won't be allowed into the west.Mosques that preach such beliefs will be treated like KKK/nazi recuritment centers. Picket, harrass, sue, and otherwise oppose them until they get the message. Make them unwelcome, and force their members to consider alternatives. In the free west, make sure there are other healthier alternatives.Make the less radical members drift off to other groups.
In France, I would start with the mosque those gunmen attended and find legal ways to harass, inmidate, and ultimately shut down the place. Deport anyone attending who isan't a French citizen. Force them to answer questiosn in the press about their beliefs. Publish names of members. Station armed policemen outside the mosque at all hours "for protection". Get some picketers. Seek out confrontation, but ONLY with that mosque, and with the imman that would allow such beliefs to fester in his congregation.
The one thing you do NOT do is give in to their intimidation. Ever.
By the way, this is EXACTLY what we do to radical christian fanatics (David Koresh, Hillburough baptist, etc.) which is why these groups bubble up, and theneventually disappear. We actively make them unwelcome. It is also what we do to radical political groups as well.
