USDA Advisory Board Will Now Make Nutrition Recommendations Based Upon Environmental Impact to The Earth; Will Discourage Meat Eating
Ah yes, of course. Naturally it has come to this.
WASHINGTON -- A panel that advises the US Agriculture Department appears set to recommend that Americans be told not only what foods are better for their health, but also for the environment. That means that when the latest version of its dietary guidelines comes out, the government may push even harder than it has in recent years for people to choose more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and other plant-based foods -- at the expense of meat. ... The advisory panel has been discussing the idea of sustainability in public meetings, indicating that its recommendations, expected early this year, may address the environment. A recommendation circulated last month said a sustainable diet helps ensure food access for both the current population and future generations. A dietary pattern higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods is "more health promoting and is associated with lesser environmental impact than is the current average US diet,’" the said. That appears to take at least partial aim at the beef industry. A study by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last year said raising beef for the American dinner table is more harmful to the environment than other meat industries such as pork and chicken.I just can't. Update: Course Reversed. Yesterday, the USDA declared "environmental impacts" will not be part of dietary guidelines.
An advisory committee to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reversed course and will not recommend that the agency consider the environmental impact of food production when updating its national dietary guidelines, a USDA official told VICE News on Monday. In December, the Associated Press (AP) reported that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) of the USDA would make recommendations based on nutritional considerations, as it has done historically, as well as environmental impacts. ... While the DGAC did review literature on sustainable diets, the USDA says the effects of food production on the planet will not factor in to its final dietary guidelines.And yet how close did they come? What the hell is going on with "our" government?

The government advice for eating has been almost universally terrible. It should all be ignored, except that it affects the poor kids who are stuck in public school living off rice cakes.

Rather than actually pay attention to what the kids are saying about the meals, they'll commission millions of dollars for a study on why kids are going hungry in school or throwing out what they're getting served.

Romans 5 doesn't work. That's not about children, and explicitly states "for until the Law, sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law." Which would be the case for children, at least infants, who are completely incapable of knowing the law.
Romans 5 is saying (a different way) that "all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God." All men need salvation. That's not in question. The question is what does God say about children- specifically infants- who have no opportunity *not* to sin?
As for Psalm 51- the Psalmist is specifically not a child. He admits to his own transgressions, and only has understanding of "in sin my mother conceived me," because of his own understanding.
At no point have I said children do not sin. Human nature is sinful. What the Bible says, over and over beginning with Genesis, is that people who literally do not know better (where there is no law) cannot be held to account for their actions.
Sin entered through the knowing act of Adam. Likewise, until Christ, all died- even those who had not sinned in a like manner (I would argue that would include children- Heaven was forbidden to all Men). After Christ, Heaven is open, and those who have not sinned (knowingly) are judged innocent. Outside of children, that is a vanishingly small number of people.

It gives people a sense of belonging, a higher purpose, a grand vision that makes sense of the world, a belief that they are true and noble and good - part of the Elect.

Beginning with the 1985 edition, HHS and USDA have appointed a Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) consisting of nationally recognized experts in the field of nutrition and health. The charge to the Committee is to review the scientific and medical knowledge current at the time. The Committee then prepares a report for the Secretaries that provides recommendations for the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines based on their review of current literature.
So, looks like a Reagan era "what could wrong?" initiative.

It's a matter of taste. Some folks like it grilled, I like 'em broiled. So I'll broil it in a glass pan underneath heating stones in the oven @ 365 degrees slathered in olive oil to keep it juicy.
Seasoned with pepper, garlic, parsely.
Cooked until the point you cut 1/4 of the way through and see pink.

Well, for a classic pan sauce, yes.
But the steak house trick has always been to add butter (and sometimes the fat trimmed from the aged primals).
I think I would go the classic route for a low or mid-priced cut. But for NY strip or porterhouse, I like the minimalist way.

On the other hand, I have several relatives with severe peanut allergies and on more than one occasion have driven them to the emergency room after they stabbed themselves with their epi-pen after being inadvertently exposed to peanuts. I am quite sure that they would be much happier if peanut allergies really were bullshit but several near death experiences argue that they are real.

I trim out that big chunk of fat in the middle of the Delmonico (boneless rib steak) and any other big chunks I can excise. Then I trim a little from the perimeter. Finally I try to close off the holes left by reforming the steak into a solid roundish piece. There is plenty of fat leftover for flavor, and it minimizes flare ups and burning.
Have you tried pan searing and then finishing in the oven?

When my daughter was 12 I got her a .38 Special Model 10 Smith and Wesson because she did not like the cases flying out when she shot any of my other pistols. We would shoot at a range that was used by the local police departments. It was interesting to see that a 12 year old girl shot significantly better than many of the police at that range. She would consistently put six shots in the 8 ring of a silhouette target. I am not sure how many of the police shooters rounds missed the paper entirely but they could sure empty their magazines in a hurry.
When she turned 21 the revolver was hers.

is that entire school districts should not be obligated to shift their
entire dietary system to accommodate individuals.
Pack lunches. Get epi's for the teachers and train them on what to look for and how to respond.

And that is pretty much what we do. The thing is that you are wrong. There are plenty of people who do claim that there is no such thing as peanut allergy. I have seen it in these threads from time to time. Also, the individual with the allergy should be the one with the epi-pen as soon as they are old enough. The intelligence and common sense of teachers is not evenly distributed. While many, or even most, teachers may well be competent to handle the situation, you can't count on there being a teacher with the sense to pour piss out of a boot, let alone use an epi-pen correctly.
And it is like guns because whenever there is a gun control debate with liberals, they will always claim "No one is trying to take your guns" when, in fact that is their ultimate goal from the beginning.
All I ask for is some awareness and common courtesy. Just like safe gun gun etiquette starts with not pointing the muzzle at anybody you are not willing to kill, it is courtesy to ask if there is anybody who is allergic to peanuts before you open a package, especially in a closed room or vehicle where the sensitive person cannot easily get away. The reason is the same. you might kill somebody without intending to do so.
It is an inconvenience. I can't eat bananas with peanut butter when these relatives are at the house and I can't watch TV while eating peanut butter from the jar with a spoon. But balanced against the inconvenience of another trip to the emergency room and the possible inconvenience of a funeral, it is not that bad.

A former Chicago homicide dick, hethinks overall poor LEO marksmanship goes to inconsistenttraining (some instructors are stellar while others are substandard at best) and infrequency of practice. Shooting proficiency is a perishable skill. I've taught handgun and rifle marksmanship both in and out of the Service. Some people are open to learning, others not. The worst students (usually male) are those with shooting experience but who lacked prior training with emphasis on fundamentals.
That said, an Indianapolis cop using his service pistol (a Glock) shot the gun out of the hand of a man threatening suicide about two years ago. The man with the gun was approximately20 feet away. He had the gun to his head when the Indy cop fired. Aside from a minor wound on his hand froma bullet graze, the guy came out all right.Turns out the guy who attempted suicide was a schizophrenic who forgot to take his meds, and then kept on forgetting. That cop made an amazing shot, especially given the stress of the circumstances.

I read about a sheriff in Texas who shot the pistol out of a gunman's hand. For years that story gave him a fearsome reputation that encouraged other criminals to back down in confrontations.
After he retired, he admitted that he had been trying to shoot that other fellow in the heart but he was nervous and missed and it was just dumb luck that it had hit the gun.

If a student is so allergic to peanuts that just being in their presence is a potential trigger -- thankfully I'm not THAT allergic, but I know fumes can set some people off -- you'll need to talk to the school about allowing the student to eat away from other students. Make sure that s/he always has an epipen with them (unless ZERO TOLERANCE!!! says they can't, in which case fuck zero tolerance, do it anyway), and that there's an epipen in the school nurse's office. Make sure teachers are aware. Make sure the parents of the child's friends are aware. But first and foremost, make sure the child is aware and is vigilant.
If you're taking any kind of mass transportation, especially planes, always try to do so as early in the day as possible. Planes especially are only given a thorough cleaning first thing in the morning before the first flight of the day, so any residue from bagged peanuts or other peanut items would be as reduced as possible.
Read the ingredients on everything. EVERYTHING. Even things you've bought for years. At restaurants, tell the waitstaff about the allergy and ask them to recommend menu items that are safe. If you're really allergic, to the point that even small residue or smell could set you off, don't go out to eat, or only eat at specific restaurants that you know are safe for you. Never let your guard down, or else be prepared to face the consequences.
Thankfully, people with severe allergies like mine are a minority; I wouldn't wish it on anyone, honestly. But as a minority we have to adapt to the world around us, not vice versa. If you have an anaphylactic reaction to bee stings, you don't go to the home of your neighborhood beekeeper and demand s/he destroy their hives. All you can do is take reasonable precautions to make sure you're safe -- the more severe the allergy, the more pronounced and prescribed the precautions -- and that others around you are aware of what to do if you suffer an attack.
It sucks. A lot. But that's life!

Vegetarians are typically skinny, maybe not anorexic, like Lanza, but bordering.

This thread may be dead, but I have to share this story anyway, just because. My coworker is allergic to nuts and so we had to learn to be careful about opening them in the room, and bringing things in with nuts, etc.. First person I've really spent time with with a nut allergy. (she can handle them in the room, but they make her itchy).
So, last year she was pregnant. Co-worker and I threw a baby shower and bought cake and because she's allergic, did not buy nuts, only mints. Lady in other office comes to party, says "you know what would go great with this cake, nuts!". We say 'she is allergic'. Other lady runs to her office and brings her GIANT CAN OF NUTS to my pregnant, allergic coworkers own baby shower and starts chomping away.
