Poll: Republicans Prefer Anyone Else to Boehner

Okay, "someone else" would be more accurate.

Geraghty digests a poll of Republicans finding "tepid" support for John Boehner, and majority support for a new leader.

When asked whether they agree with the statement, " trust House Speaker John Boehner to fight for the issues that are important to most Republicans,"52 percent agreed, 37 percent disagreed. Only 13 percent strongly agreed, 18 percent strongly disagreed.

Okay, a bare majority agrees he'll "fight" for Republican priorities. How effective do they think he'll be?

When asked whether they agree with the statement, "Speaker Boehner has been ineffective in opposing President Obama’s agenda", 64 percent agreed, 24 percent disagreed. An entire 29 percent strongly agreed, only 9 percent strongly disagreed.

Sounds about right. And this seems pretty bad for Boehner:

When asked whether they agree with the statement, "House Speaker John Boehner has the best interests of the American public at heart, rather than special interests", 44 percent agreed, 43 percent disagreed. Only 9 percent strongly agreed, and 20 percent strongly disagreed. 34% of respondents say they'd "definitely" prefer someone else.

60% of Republicans would prefer if a new man takes the Speakership, 34% saying they'd "definitely" prefer that.

No one is announcing a challenge to Boehner. I guess this poll is intended to gauge the likelihood of success of such a bid.

It seems there is a public desire for someone else in the Speaker's role, if only House Republicans would actually rise up to the occasion.

Shots Fired: Representative Jim Bridenstine (R, TX OK) just announced he will not be supporting Boehner as speaker.

We know the drill.

1 - The people decide they want a new direction

2 - Existing "leadership" refuses to get the job done

3 - The people turn to new options to get the job done

4 - Exiting "leadership" corrupts and destroys the new blood to preserve their positions

Wash, rinse, repeat, until it all burns down.

11 We won't have an effective GOP until there is a republican president. If that president happens to be conservative, the GOP will, in a spirit of bipartisan compromise, work with their counterparts in the democrat party to contain any conservative urges the president might have, for the good of the country, of course. .

12 When I was in middle school, we took a poll of all the boys in my class, asking who was "friends" with this one particular boy. We got something well over 50% who said they were not friends with this kid.

The whole point of the 2014 election was putting the brakes on the Obama agenda, but Boehner and McConnell have refused to do so even with the massive wins.

Posted by: joe-impeachin44 at January 02, 2015 11:54 AM (KxfTG)

57 We went through this in Texas a few sessions ago.

The Texas Legislature elects a speaker every two years, when the body meets. It's a foregone conclusion most every time.

For several sessions, after Tom DeLay engineered a redistricting that finally gave the GOP the representation it deserved, we had a solid conservative speaker.

Then one day, some Democrats who'd gotten tired of being bulldozed all united behind a liberal Republican. They only had to peel something like 10 Republicans off to get a majority. The move surprised everybody.

Then the TEA Party got active and decided to push the newly elected 2010 GOP majority to put a conservative up as speaker. The liberal speaker saw it coming and curried favor with the up-and-coming members by co-hosting fundraisers and other little gestures that put them in his debt.

In the end, only 9 of 100 GOP members voted for the conservative. That was not enough to beat the coalition of Democrats and Republicans voting for the liberal Republican. And those nine were punished for their act by getting assigned to backbench committees where they couldn't do anything significant for their constituents.

The lesson: If you're going to overthrow the sitting speaker, you better have a brilliant plan. Blunt force will get out-forced.

91 Once upon a time the Republican Party was the "progressive" party in this country.

Then Warren Harding died.

For a period of about 8 years the party was conservative.

Then the Great Depression happened.

For the next 40 or so years, the Republican Party was the possession of the liberal rich.

Then Ronald Reagan was elected Governor of California, and eventually President of the United States.

For a period of about 8 years, the party behaved as if it was conservative, because they didn't want to piss off a President who actually was, you know, conservative.

Then Ronald Reagan left office, suffered from Alzheimers, and died.

For a period of about the next several forevers, the Republican Party again became the sole possession of the liberal rich.

The end.

92 I think the question is what functions should be the responsibility of the Speaker of the House.

If it's to be the public face of the Republicans, then it should be someone who is able to handle themselves well on camera.

If it's to be someone who will be ruthless about pushing a Republican, to say nothing of conservative agenda, well, that's a rather different skill set.

People who play poker will sometimes bluff. If you fold when your opponent bluffs, it doesn't usually mean you had a good hand, it means you had a bad hand, and you figured your opponent knew you had nothing.

Unfortunately the orange skinned crybaby thinks the role is to play the game with Harry Reid where they force through last minute legislation that he wants instead of demanding that they just use some of the bills he has sitting on his desk. And to roll over like a puppy and pee on himself for Obama.

How about someone who loves being on camera---giving it back to Obama?
Boehner never misses and opportunity to *not* hold a press conference publicly denouncing some illegal, or dangerous move by Obama. Dude should have Schumer-like during the last shutdown, every day pointing the blame squarely at the president whose idea it was to add a shutdown into the mix and then purposely made cuts that would inflict the most damage to regular citizens (WWI vets in DC, national park visitors, etc.).

2. It's politically impossible for either party to support or enact any legislation that makes even a tentative move towards paying down the debt due to the pushback from, well, everyone. Taxpayers, benefit receivers of all types, banks, our trading partners and big business.

So. Right now the "National Debt" is just a Boogey Man brought out by whoever to justify their latest scam.

Are you kidding? Issa has done more in his position than anybody I can recall. He was only a committee chairman, not head of DoJ, for God's sake. He had essentially no power, yet chased down and forced a number of lefty malefactors to answer for their actions in public hearings. He did all he could do.

Had a friend who was in Louisiana at the time (which I have to spell out because I - and he - lived in the other LA...). His impression was that much of the Duke support was a "Screw you!" to the uproar that Duke's candidacy caused in the rest of the country.

197 I am from Boehner's home district, but even I must admit he is not the right man to be Speaker any more. Boehner needs to step down and let a fiery Tea Party-type lead the counteroffensive against His Royal Glibness. 199 Their story is that it was an elastic exercise band that broke, so could happen.

A few follow up questions from the press would show how bullshit that typical progressive lie is.

"Do you intend to sue the manufacturer?"

"Senator Reid if you could have this sort of accident happen twice - don't you think that it could be happening to millions of Americans?"

"Don't you think that hearings should be held to determine if that type of exercise equipment is safe?"

It's a cover story that is meant to quietly go away with no more questions. If it was just a black eye he could have claimed he walked into a door, but the broken ribs demanded a better cover.

How about he got punched in the face by a teenage boy who kicked him in the ribs when he was down? You wouldn't have to be very old as a healthy child to be stronger than that ancient reprobate is.

I have two problems with this.

The first is that ISIS is now apparently murdering doctors who refuse to treat their guys with Ebola. The second is that fighting tends to be messy, and anyone fighting against ISIS risks catching it from either an infected wounded guy, or an infected recently killed fighter.

I'd hate to see ISIS's opponents catch it while fighting them.

If ISIS murders all the doctors in their territory then there will be no one to save their murdering asses, then they, their wives, their kids, and their goats can drown in their own blood and other bodily fluids for all I care. As a matter of fact, if ebola spreads all over the under-washed Middle East, it ought to decrease the level of "unrest" by a fair amount. (Israel is safe, it is a modern country without Obama supporters making decisions.) I say let the bodies pile up until the shooting stops.

As everyone who's ever read the Constitution will appreciate, a Representative is a member of the Legislative branch, which passes laws. It's the Executive branch that enforces them.

Issa could no more prosecute anyone, put anyone in jail, cost anyone his job or his pension, or anything else any more than you can. Have you prosecuted anyone in the Administration? No. Why? Because you don't have that power. Neither do I. Neither does Issa. He held hearings that exposed wrongdoing. He couldn't prosecute anyone, any more than he could declare any laws un-Constitutional, because those powers rest in other branches of government.

We really need to start teaching civics in high school again.
