Poll: Republicans Prefer Anyone Else to Boehner

Okay, "someone else" would be more accurate.

Geraghty digests a poll of Republicans finding "tepid" support for John Boehner, and majority support for a new leader.

When asked whether they agree with the statement, " trust House Speaker John Boehner to fight for the issues that are important to most Republicans,"52 percent agreed, 37 percent disagreed. Only 13 percent strongly agreed, 18 percent strongly disagreed.

Okay, a bare majority agrees he'll "fight" for Republican priorities. How effective do they think he'll be?

When asked whether they agree with the statement, "Speaker Boehner has been ineffective in opposing President Obama’s agenda", 64 percent agreed, 24 percent disagreed. An entire 29 percent strongly agreed, only 9 percent strongly disagreed.

Sounds about right. And this seems pretty bad for Boehner:

When asked whether they agree with the statement, "House Speaker John Boehner has the best interests of the American public at heart, rather than special interests", 44 percent agreed, 43 percent disagreed. Only 9 percent strongly agreed, and 20 percent strongly disagreed. 34% of respondents say they'd "definitely" prefer someone else.

60% of Republicans would prefer if a new man takes the Speakership, 34% saying they'd "definitely" prefer that.

No one is announcing a challenge to Boehner. I guess this poll is intended to gauge the likelihood of success of such a bid.

It seems there is a public desire for someone else in the Speaker's role, if only House Republicans would actually rise up to the occasion.

Shots Fired: Representative Jim Bridenstine (R, TX OK) just announced he will not be supporting Boehner as speaker.

We presented the results to him.

57 We went through this in Texas a few sessions ago.

The Texas Legislature elects a speaker every two years, when the body meets. It's a foregone conclusion most every time.

For several sessions, after Tom DeLay engineered a redistricting that finally gave the GOP the representation it deserved, we had a solid conservative speaker.

Then one day, some Democrats who'd gotten tired of being bulldozed all united behind a liberal Republican. They only had to peel something like 10 Republicans off to get a majority. The move surprised everybody.

Then the TEA Party got active and decided to push the newly elected 2010 GOP majority to put a conservative up as speaker. The liberal speaker saw it coming and curried favor with the up-and-coming members by co-hosting fundraisers and other little gestures that put them in his debt.

In the end, only 9 of 100 GOP members voted for the conservative. That was not enough to beat the coalition of Democrats and Republicans voting for the liberal Republican. And those nine were punished for their act by getting assigned to backbench committees where they couldn't do anything significant for their constituents.

The lesson: If you're going to overthrow the sitting speaker, you better have a brilliant plan. Blunt force will get out-forced.

If it's to be the public face of the Republicans, then it should be someone who is able to handle themselves well on camera.

Boehner never misses and opportunity to *not* hold a press conference publicly denouncing some illegal, or dangerous move by Obama. Dude should have Schumer-like during the last shutdown, every day pointing the blame squarely at the president whose idea it was to add a shutdown into the mix and then purposely made cuts that would inflict the most damage to regular citizens (WWI vets in DC, national park visitors, etc.).

1. it's mathematically impossible for us to "dial back" the debt. Even if the Gov stopped spending anything (pause here for choking laughter) it would still take years to pay it down and how likely or possible is it for Gov to stop all spending?

2. It's politically impossible for either party to support or enact any legislation that makes even a tentative move towards paying down the debt due to the pushback from, well, everyone. Taxpayers, benefit receivers of all types, banks, our trading partners and big business.

As everyone who's ever read the Constitution will appreciate, a Representative is a member of the Legislative branch, which passes laws. It's the Executive branch that enforces them.

Issa could no more prosecute anyone, put anyone in jail, cost anyone his job or his pension, or anything else any more than you can. Have you prosecuted anyone in the Administration? No. Why? Because you don't have that power. Neither do I. Neither does Issa. He held hearings that exposed wrongdoing. He couldn't prosecute anyone, any more than he could declare any laws un-Constitutional, because those powers rest in other branches of government.

We really need to start teaching civics in high school again.
